ANYA’S POV:
I look as P'Pat and P'Pran hug and feel heat come to my cheeks…it’s like the cuteness of them as a couple is making me blush. It seems like it’s been weeks of this…P'Pat and P'Pran sneaking around in secret…only Anda, Yai, P'Pa, and I know about them. I wish for their sake they didn’t have to hide the relationship…especially since they seem to be truly happy and in love…they are soulmates. I wish they could walk around, hold hands, go on dates…all in public. I wish that P'Pran could come over for dinner…or P'Pat could go over to P'Pran’s house. P'Pat is probably the best person I know…well maybe Anda is better since he is my brother, but P'Pat is pretty close to it…so he deserves happiness. I don’t understand any of this…why do grownups have so many issues like this and why do people have to care about P'Pat and his soulmate so much.
I wish I had one answer to just one of the questions, but nobody is up to telling me an answer…apparently I am too young. I might be five…but I should be allowed to have an answer to all of this. All I want is for everyone to be happy and be able to show their happiness to the world without worry of judgment.
I get taken out of my thoughts by someone sitting on the bench with me and I look over to see P’Pa smiling at me. I try to smile back, and she just asks, “What’s wrong…what have you been sighing over here about, so much? No five-year-old should have that amount of worries in their life…to be worth that many sighs.”
I look away at my cousin and soon to be cousin-in-law and feel myself sigh once again which gets me a side hug from P’Pa. I turn to her finally again, and explain, “I am sorry for sighing so much, I just don’t know how to explain it. Why do people think it’s wrong for P'Pat and P'Pran being together? They are a normal relationship like anyone else…just because of their gender and the magic they have, they are treated differently. Is it because I am five…or does it really not make sense?”
P’Pa just smiles at me and hugs me a little tighter and then replies, “Oh, sweetheart…I get what you mean, but it’s sadly part of this world. Do you remember what Yai said?” I nod and she continues, “A lot of fae and humans don’t agree with your attitude towards them being together. They think in a very us vs them rhetoric–”
I look up confused and raise my hand so I don’t feel rude as I slightly interrupt, “Us vs them? Rr–rhetoric? What does that mean?”
P'Pa just seems to smile and responds, “It’s about fearing or just not liking somebody because they are different from who you are. So, for the subject we are talking about…Ms. Dissaya or Uncle Ming might be scared of the other type of magic or maybe that P'Pat and P'Pran are the same gender. I honestly don’t know exactly…I just know that it’s not really important.”
I look up confused at that last part specifically and so I ask, “How is it not important? Wouldn’t it affect their relationship with their mae’s and por’s? Wouldn’t that hurt them?”
I look to see that smile still on P'Pa’s face as she seems to try to think of something to say. Though it takes a moment, I ready myself as she replies, “Anya…I understand what you mean and it’s good you feel that way. It means that you are open-minded and understanding of others who are different from you. That is good and important for any being, and especially in this new world where things are getting to be more understanding. Though that isn’t the point right now, do you see them?” She points to P'Pat and P'Pran and I look over to see P'Pat teasing P'Pran about something and Wai laughing and P'Pran teasing back. By the teasing…it doesn't seem like they are happy, but as you look in their eyes you can see how happy they truly are and comfortable.
I laugh slightly as I watch and P'Pa continues, "See…do those two seem unhappy to you? Yeah it might make things harder for them, but I don't think they are any less happy because of their Mae's and Por's. Though, I am not them so I wouldn't know…maybe you should ask them."
I look down to the ground, knowing that she is right, but also know that I am slightly scared to ask. P'Pa seems to read my face and says, "I don't think you have to worry…I think they would be willing to answer any question you have."
I nod, slightly worrying my lip in my mouth, but before I can say anything in response P'Pran walks over and says, "Are you two okay…why are you sitting over here? Don't you want to go on any of the rides or get some food?"
I don't look up at him until P'Pa says, "I think Anya has a question for you." I look up so fast and glare slightly at her and she just continues saying straight to me, "It's okay…you can do it."
I bite my lip a little…a habit that I always do when I am nervous or worried. I am just not sure how to ask it…especially to P'Pran who I barely know. He seems to see that so he says, "Anya I am here to talk whenever you want to. Don't let anybody pressure you to tell me. However, I would love to hear whatever you want to ask."
I look over to P'Pa who just gives me two thumbs up and I nod my head and shoo her away. I roll my eyes slightly as she just walks away with her hands up saying, "Okay…I can see when I am not wanted."
When she is far enough away I turn my attention back to P'Pran and know that I want to tell him…I am just nervous. He just smiles and asks, "Would it be easier to ask somebody else…like P'Pat? I can go get him for you." He seems like he is about to get up and so as he turns I take hold of his shirt slightly.
I feel unsure as he turns back to me smiling and just speaks slowly, "I know we aren't that close yet…but I would like to be. Just think of me as a friend…okay?" I think for a second and I shake my head, and he just nods his head, "Okay…well maybe we can be one day."
I interrupt, "No, that's not what I meant…I want you to be my cousin…not my friend. I like you a lot and you are nice and love P'Pat which makes me happy. Also I like how you didn't treat me and Anda like little kids…since most do."
He just laughs a little and replies, "Of course sweetheart…so what is your question?"
I think hard for a question that can lead to the real question without being obvious and then like a light bulb I got it, "Do you love P'Pat because he is your soulmate?"
I watch as he looks like he is trying to think of something and then finally he answers, "Let me ask you a question first and then I will answer it…okay?" I nod and he continues, "Do you love Anda because he is your soulmate?"
I feel confused why he would ask, but answer honestly, "No…I don't love him because he's my soulmate. I don't even love him because he is my twin or brother. I know people say you have to love your family, so I don't want to say I love him for that reason. I don't feel like I have to love him…I want to love him. He is my best friend, confidante, the person who makes me laugh when I am down, my protector, the person I feel complete with. I would feel the same way if he was not blood related to me…because either way he is the family that I chose. I want to protect him, and want to be there for him through everything and I know he will always be there."
I smile as I think about it and then say, "Though people say that it's weird that the platonic soulmate is not supposed to be like that. They say that romantic soulmates are like that, but for me it is…no romance, but that is the only difference." I bite my lip worried that P'Pran will think I am weird.
I look away…waiting for him to leave…but feel a hand lift my chin up and I look at P'Pran who just smiles warmly. He then says something unexpected, "Breathe…it's okay…your thoughts are going crazy…right?" I try to nod, but feel my anxiety picking up so he takes my hand and says, "Okay…deep breath with me."
"Deep Breath"
In…
1…
2…
3…
4…
5…
Out…
1…
2…
3…
4…
5…
"Let's do that three more times." I hear him say and as I do it…my thoughts slow down and I feel calmer.
As if reading my confusion he explains, "I have had pretty bad anxiety my whole life…sometimes I get panic attacks. It took me a long time to find methods that work for me and that's one of them. I could see that you were having some racing thoughts so hopefully you feel a little better."
I nod because the racing thoughts have calmed enough and I feel like I can actually talk again. Most don’t understand my racing thoughts, it’s nice talking to somebody who does. I took another deep breath before speaking, “Thank you, that was helpful…I just got worried that you would be like the others. Anda doesn’t really care about what others think, and not saying I do…it’s just hard saying…we are just this close.”
P'Pran frowns and takes hold of my hand and exclaims, "Well they are not worth your time! I don't believe in any of that…I am as close with Wai as I am with P'Pat…it's just a little different with adding romance to the mix. I love both of them, and I wouldn't be complete with either one of them…so don't listen to the ones who say differently."
I laugh slightly and then remember something, "You didn't answer my question."
P'Pran nods, "Oh, I am sorry…I agree with you about loving the soulmate thing. I don't love P'Pat because he is my soulmate. I love him because he makes me smile even when it feels like it's impossible. I love him because a hug from him relaxes me and can comfort me. I love him because he makes me feel like I can do anything, when he says that he believes in me. I love him because he believes in me. I love him because he makes me feel like I am gorgeous even when I haven't showered, I am wearing sweatpants and a dirty shirt. I love him because I want to protect him, make him happy every day. I love him because he is the person I can talk about anything with. I love him for so many reasons…none of them really have to do with us being soulmates…it's just nice that we are. I feel like I would still pick him even if there wasn't soulmates and our families hated each other."
I accidently let out, "Aww," while listening to every reason. That is honestly so sweet…okay this is the right time to ask, "Do you wish your Mae's and Por's approved and do you think it might be hard on your relationship because they don't?"
I watch as his eyebrows crease and he gets a faraway look on his face…as if he is thinking really hard. I decided to be Patient since I know this might be a hard question and wait for the answer. It takes a few minutes before I hear, "That is a difficult set of questions." I am about to say that he doesn't have to answer, but then he continues, "To be honest, it has been hard for me ever since I found out that my romantic soulmate was a different type of magic. I even thought that maybe I don't actually have one and it's just being weird or something. I thought of so many conclusions and worried myself so much that I started not caring about myself and would have 2 or 3 panic attacks a week. However that day…when I officially met P'Pat…it was like everything was set into place. This piece that I had no idea was missing was with me again…I felt complete, whole, and completely myself. P'Pat is one of my favorite people and I would never choose anyone else to be my romantic soulmate. There are so many reasons why I love him…many reasons why things could go wrong…but one main reason why none of it matters. Do you know what that reason is?" I shake my head and answer, "P'Pat…he makes everything else not matter."
He takes a deep breath and continues looking ready to cry, "He makes my life so much better. Yes…I wish that we could have parents that approve. I get jealous of Korn, Wai, Ink, and P'Pa, because I wish that we could go to each other's houses for family dinners. I wish that we could have two sets of parents…instead of just one. However, I am okay with it just being us…since, P'Pat doesn't make it seem like it's ' JUST US,' It feels perfect."
I feel confused so I say, "But-"
Though then he explains further, "Also, we have the approval of you, your brother, Pa, Wai, Korn, Ink, your Yai, and a couple of others…so it's okay if we don't have our Mae's and Por's."
I smile and nod, and then as I feel better I ask, "Can I hug you?" Without even answering he just wraps his arms around me and I smile…it's nice having one more person in your corner.
As we back away, he asks, "Okay so rides or food first?"
I think about it for a second and realize I want to go on my favorite roller coaster, The Rock Tumbler that nobody wants to go on. I pout and am about to say, food when he interrupts, "What do you think about the Rock Tumbler…I don't know if you would be too scared for it…but it's my favorite?"
I jump up and down, "Yes! Yes! Yes! I love that…it's my favorite…nobody ever wants to go on it."
I run up to P'Pa and say, "I get to go on Rock Tumbler," at her face of nervousness I continue, "P'Pran said he would go on it with me." She just smiles and I run back to P'Pran and take hold of his hand and he just smiles down at me.
P'Pat looks at us and says, "So, I am not your favorite anymore…Anya?"
I shake my head, "Nope…P'Pran is the best…and he will go on the Rock Tumbler with me."
P'Pat pout turns quickly to laugh as he says, "Yeah…you two will have a lot in common."
I put my head to the side as if to say, 'Like what,' and P'Pat answers, "You both love thrill rides, amusement parks, have bad anxiety, are artists, love music, and very introverted except around your chosen family." I look at P'Pran to confirm and he nods and I laugh as I smile at him.
FORTY MINUTES LATER:
Pran'S POV:
Wow! Apparently I have a lot in common with a five year old…well that is okay. I like Anya and as we get off the ride for the third time I ask her what she would like to do. She smiles and says, "I want chicken wings." I laugh and nod as we head off to the stand.
ONE HOUR LATER:
Pat'S POV:
I sigh tiredly as Pa, Wai, Anda, and I meet up with the thrill riders. As I see them I shake my head…they are so much alike. They each have one of Pran's pods in while eating cake and chicken wings. They are both something else…how do you eat that much sweet and grease after going on those types of rides…I have no idea.
I laugh as we approach and P'Pran says, "Ohh we're going to go on the drop next…anyone want to come?" We all shake our heads and I see them walk away.
Suddenly I feel a presence behind me and feel a hand on my shoulder and turn to see P'Pa and Wai looking at me with knowing looks. Before I can respond Wai says, "Your cousin is going to steal your boyfriend."
We all laugh and watch the pair walk away and I feel so happy that two of my favorite fae get along so well.
