Windows to the Soul

Chapter Text

Barry stares deep into Hal’s chocolate orbs, the longing and desire near palpable between them.

“Bar,” Hal whispers, low and sultry.  “My eyes are up here.”

“Sorry.”  Barry laughs, tearing his eyes away from the chocolate in Hal’s hands.  Morning sunlight streams through the window, lighting his hair pale gold and eyes a bright, sparkling blue against the tangled sheets.  “You were so thoughtful, getting me Valentine’s Day gifts, and here I am paying more attention to them than to you.

Hal rolls the ball of chocolate between his fingers.  The movement is enough to pull Barry’s gaze again, and Hal can’t help the smirk that creeps onto his lips.  “So you’re saying Valentine’s Day is more about the aesthetics of romance than the actual thing?”

“I should hope not.”  Barry reaches out and picks something out of Hal’s eyebrow.  The piece of glitter glints as Barry turns his finger.  “Especially since it looks like we’re stuck with Valentine’s Day for the next week at least, unless we do another couple rounds in the Watchtower decontamination room.   I’m sure the techs would prefer we didn’t.”

Hal inches forward, using the motion to push the sheets back to bare the rest of his chest and then some.  “Well, since we’re mostly clean of glitter, what do you say to me whipping up a hot plate with my ring, and dribbling some chocolate over all of this?”

Barry’s mostly been occupied pretending not to notice all the naked skin in front of him, but that comment pushes him over the edge.  He grimaces. “Absolutely not.  Even if I wanted the trip to the emergency room burn unit, the Watchtower system can’t handle anything else in its decontamination tank!”

“I wasn’t suggesting the Watchtower clean me off.”  Hal throws in an eyebrow waggle for good measure, and is rewarded by a laugh.  “Fine, fine!  I’ll eat it off of you !”

“Not happening.”  The chocolates disappear from his hands, and he watches with rapt attention as Barry slips one between his lips.  His tongue darts out in a quick motion, inviting, and his lips curl into a smile.  “Open up.”

“Oh, so you’re actually going to share this yea—“ and then the chocolate is on his tongue.

He swallows on instinct, the entire orb going down his throat, and lodging there.  He coughs, doubling over. The stupid thing presses on his windpipe, and then Barry’s against his back with arms around him.  His lungs heave the stupid thing straight out of his mouth.

The murderous chocolate doesn’t even land on the sheets; Barry whisks it away, and is back with a cool glass of water and rubbing circles into Hal’s hunched back.

“Okay, no more playing around with the food.”  Barry helps him drink most of the water, then leans in closer when Hal starts shaking.  “Are you okay?  Is there more in there?”

Hal shakes his head, even if he can’t stop laughing at the idiotic thought that just popped into his head.  “It’s not that.  It’s that I choked on a chocolate, but I can totally go to town on your di—“

Barry cuts him off with another kiss, which really isn’t the negative reinforcement he thinks it is.  Hal certainly isn’t complaining, though, as his tongue moves against Barry’s.  The alertness from his near death-by-chocolate experience still has his nerves tingling, and this is more than enough to make them jump to full attention.  He’s hyper aware of the jut of Barry’s hip, Barry’s fingers grasping at Hal’s spine, and every square inch of skin pressed against skin.  It’s so much at once, even before Hal rolls  the two of them so Barry’s mostly on top of him, heat and weight and pressure in all the best ways.  When they come up for air, Barry stares down with him like he wants to devour Hal whole, despite the recent evidence that that’s really not the best idea.

“So,” Barry says, eyes dark and lidded and all for Hal, “no more trips to the hospital or the Watchtower.  I’m keeping you right here.”

“Is choking on romance all I had to do to bring out your sultry side?  Good to know.”  Hal laughs as Barry’s expression cracks straight down the middle to reveal the affectionate exasperation Hal knows and loves.  He presses a kiss against the side of Barry’s mouth, and whispers, “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Notes:

Steps to writing a Valentine’s Day story:
1. Come up with a silly idea that only kind of fits the holiday
2. Write that exchange, then write more to give it context
3. Write too much plot, and now the original exchange doesn’t fit without feeling contrived
4. Make the original exchange it’s own chapter
(Omitted: 3.5. Miss Valentine’s Day 2023, and 4.5. Have most of it written already and still almost miss Valentine’s Day 2024)

Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated! As are comments, questions, kudos, favorite sightings of "orbs" in the wild, etc! Thank you for reading!
