Chapter Text

Miles didn’t waste a second going after. He jumped as soon as he realized she was falling.

Abyss didn’t make it easy. He kept opening portals trying to slow him down.

Miles went even faster. Gwen’s life depended on it. With a sudden rush of adrenaline, he charged past the portals, edging closer and closer to her.

Time seemed to slow to a stand-still, and the world grew quiet.

Only he and Gwen remained.

She was getting dangerously close to the ground.

Miles went even faster. In an adrenaline fueled fury, nothing could stop him.

It seemed like Gwen was falling faster now.

What if he wasn’t fast enough? What if she-

Miles reached out an arm, now close enough to wrap it around Gwen. He shot a web up to one of the buildings, praying it would hold.

They weren’t falling anymore. But Gwen remained still.

“Gwen…” Miles breathed, close to her ear.

Gwen didn’t wake up. He laid her down on the ground.

“Gwen.” Miles said, a bit louder this time. He nudged her shoulder.

It did nothing. She still wouldn’t move.

Tears began to well up in his eyes. “Gwen! Please wake up…” Miles pleaded. “Please…I still need you.” He closed his eyes to hold back the tears blurring his vision.

A few moments passed. And then-

Gwen jerked up, gasping for air. She was hyperventilating and her breathing sounded pained.

Miles pulled her closer. “You’re okay!” He cried. He rubbed her back soothingly, trying to calm her down.

“I’m-“ Gwen started. “I’m okay. You did it.”

“Yeah. I did, didn’t I?”

Gwen hummed in agreement, trying to push herself up. She yelped in pain as it only made her hurt more.

“I think maybe you should sit the rest of this one out.” Miles observed.

“What? No. I can help!”

“Listen to me Gwen,” He replied. “You’re hurt. You almost died and I’m willing to bet you have several broken bones.”

“I’ll be fine. I have a healing factor.” She retorted.

“Even so, you need a break. I almost lost you earlier. I’m not gonna lose you again. Or ever, for that matter.”

Gwen sighed. “Okay…” She reached out an arm. “Help me up?”

He nodded, wrapping her arm around his shoulder and brought her to the other spider people. They would take care of her.

“Well, well.” Hobie chuckled. “Look who finally decided to show.”

“Ha ha.” Gwen said dryly as Miles set her down.

“She’s hurt. Can you make sure she doesn’t leave. She needs time to recover.” Miles explained.

“Yup. But it won’t be easy. Gwendy’s a stubborn one. It’s one of the reasons we get on so well.”

“I heard that.” Gwen called.

“Thanks, Hobie.” Miles said. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank you enough.”

“Don’t worry bout it, mate,” Hobie said. “It’s what friends are for.”

Miles walked over to Gwen one last time.

“I love you. I’ll be back in a bit.” He kissed her on the forehead.

“Promise?” Gwen asked, voice longing.

“I promise.” He assured her.

Kissing her one last time before he left, he swung back up, ready to face his enemy again.

Gwen wistfully watched him go. She turned to Hobie. “You think he’ll be okay?” She whispered.

“Yeah,” Hobie said. “He’ll be fine.”

Notes:

Wow, that was a wild ride. I don’t have a beta reader so if you spot any issues. (I write all my fics on the notes app btw, that’s why they’re so short. They look longer there.)

How many of you guys actually thought I’d kill off Gwen? (I could never. She’s my favorite fictional character in the history of ever.)

Comments are welcome. In fact, they are encouraged.
