1 TOKYO SUBWAY - AFTERNOON 04/09/2016
FADE IN:
[Note: I’m using the estimated dates of when Persona 5, royal or not, takes place. If you wish, you can put 20XX instead]
WE OPEN to REN AMAMIYA waking up suddenly. He is wearing black rimmed glasses and the school uniform. Slight suddenly pours in as he frowns. He is seen sitting down on a seat on the subway.
(RANDOM) Annoncer
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for riding with us today. We will be arriving at Shibuya shortly. This is the last stop for this line. Please transfer here for all subway lines. The doors to your left will be opened.
Various other people are on the train as well, and everything seems normal. Buildings pass by in the background, and REN looks around at the advertisements. Another train’s horn blares in the background. REN tiles his head down as he starts to think about how he got to this point.
BEGIN FLASHBACK:
2 HOMETOWN NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT ??/??/2015-16
Heels could be heard clacking in the background along with huffing sounds. A figure walks in front of a parked car with its lights turned on. An arm is shown grabbing another’s and a distressed sound is heard. The woman’s face is revealed as she is forced to look at the DRUNK MAN, terrified. The woman looks behind the man at something or someone.
STRUGGLING WOMAN
Please! Help!
DRUNK MAN is shown curling his free hand into a fist. He takes a step forward as another hand touches his shoulder. The man turns and stumbles before tripping over his own feet with a shout. REN, without glasses and in casual clothing, and STRUGGLING WOMAN are shown with surprised looks. STRUGGLING WOMAN covers her mouth as she lets out another distressed noise. The screen flashes white before showing the previous scene but zoomed out. The man is lying prone on the floor. He gets up slowly, with a hand over his face. His eyes are narrowed.
DRUNK MAN
Damn brat… I’ll sue!
The scene flashes white again before showing a shocked REN being dragged away by the police.
END FLASHBACK
3 TOKYO SUBWAY - AFTERNOON 04/09/2016
REN frowns to himself as he recounts what happened to him. Two girls gossip in the background. REN overhears and looks in their direction.
GOSSIPING GIRL 1
What? Are you for real? A mental shutdown?
GOSSIPING GIRL 2
It’s the truth!
GOSSIPING GIRL 1
To a person though? That’s gotta be a joke.
You really love all that occult stuff, don’t you?
The two girls giggle. The train passes by a cross section before the scene cuts to REN, walking down a street looking at his phone. He stops and looks up. A panning shot shows the large and busy crowd. REN’s phone makes a noise, drawing his attention. A RED AND BLACK APP with a peculiar design, like an eye with a black star as its pupil is shown. It expands to take up a good chunk of the phone’s screen. REN looks confused as he taps his phone a few times. The world stops around REN, who looks around, confused and then shocked. Everyone but REN is frozen, who is looking around warily. A rising tower of blue flames can be seen, forming a figure that solidifies with intensity, reflection dancing in REN’s glasses. Orange narrowed eyes and a crescent smile appear in the flames as REN’s face without glasses and with yellow eyes flashes by. The scene suddenly fades to white and REN is shown spacing out as the rest of the world continues to move around him. REN looks around again before deleting the APP.
FADE OUT
4 YONGEN-JAYA STATION - AFTERNOON 04/09/2016
WE OPEN to a subway train pulling up to a station. The doors open and people, including REN, begin flooding out, with more people running in to replace them.
(RANDOM) ANNONCER
YONGEN-JAYA, this is YONGEN-JAYA.
REN looks around the station for a few seconds. The train pulls away behind him.
[Note: This is part of the tutorial, although you won’t get any metaverse shenanigans yet. Periodically tips appear on the screen, teaching you how to play the game.]
RANDOM CHATTER
No one has been taking responsibility. It’s a waste of time to dwell on it.
(RANDOM) ANNONCER
The train doors are now closing.
REN exits YONGEN-JAYA STATION, looking for his new lodgings.
CUT TO:
5 YONGEN-JAYA BACKSTREETS - AFTERNOON 04/09/2016
WE OPEN to REN walking down the street, looking at his phone for directions. A WOMAN IN A LAB COAT power walks by him, causing REN to look up in her direction. She, however, has already run off. REN dismisses his curiosity as he turns to other matters.
REN
(Thinking) Starting today, SOJIRO SAKURA will be taking care of me.
His house should be in the backstreets of this residential area…
REN puts away his phone as he begins to look around for SOJIRO SAKURA’S HOUSE. He runs around and eventually locates it.
[Note: Over the course of the game, there are side conversations you can listen to, although they are not strictly necessary. Because of that and the fact this is going to be as long as it is, I will include some, but not all of them. Maybe I’ll compile a master doc of all of them one day, but for now I’m not keen on the extra torture.]
REN
(Thinking) The nameplate here says “SAKURA.” It looks like this might be SOJIRO SAKURA’S HOUSE…
REN rings the doorbell and waits, but no one answers. He looks around before looking at the doorbell again.
REN
(Thinking) …Even after ringing the doorbell, it doesn’t look like anyone will answer the door.
Maybe he’s gone out…
PARCEL DELIVERYMAN
Looks like no one’s home…
REN turns to look at PARCEL DELIVERYMAN, who is also attempting to get in the house.
PARCEL DELIVERYMAN
Oh, yeah… SAKURA-san’s usually at his café around this time.
Well LEBLANC’s in the back alley, so I should make my other deliveries first…
Mmm, next I need to take this package to…
PARCEL DELIVERYMAN devolves into mumbles. REN, using this information, goes to LEBLANC. He passes by people talking among themselves.
RANDOM CHATTER
The police are so lazy… They’re practically stealing our taxes.
No one has been taking responsibility. It’s a waste of time to dwell on it.
[Note: I keep this since it appears whenever you walk through areas of the game, and therefore something you experience. I might stop writing them down if they get too repetitive, however]
REN reaches LEBLANC. The entrance is small with red and white accents.
REN
It looks like this place is LEBLANC…
I’ll go inside.
6 LEBLANC CAFÉ - AFTERNOON 04/09/2016
The interior of the cafe is brown and dimly lit. There are two ELDERLY CUSTOMERS sitting down at one table. A man with an apron and pink shirt, likely the MANAGER, is sitting on a stool doing crossword puzzles. A small television is on in the background. REN walks in as he takes in his surroundings.
TABLOID SHOW HOST
A public transit bus was driven down an opposing lane with its customers still in it!
The citizens can’t live in peace if this keeps up.
ELDERLY MALE CUSTOMER
How frightening.
ELDERLY FEMALE CUSTOMER
What could be going on? Didn’t something similar happen just the other day?
MANAGER
And down is… the name of a shellfish used in pearl farming…
REN takes a step towards the MANAGER, who finally notices REN and looks up at him. He puts down the puzzle and gets up.
MANAGER
…Oh, right.
They did say that was today.
The ELDERLY CUSTOMERS get up. The MANAGER turns to look at them.
ELDERLY MALE CUSTOMER
We’ll be going now. The payment’s on the table.
MANAGER
Thanks for coming.
ELDERLY MALE CUSTOMER
This place is in the back alley, so there’s no worries of a car crashing in here.
MANAGER
A what now?
ELDERLY MALE CUSTOMER
There’s been a string of those rampage accidents, you know. I just hope that none happen around here.
MANAGER
It’s none of my concern.
ELDERLY MALE CUSTOMER
Haha, we’ll see you next time.
The two ELDERLY CUSTOMERS walk off pass REN, who bends to the side to let them through. The MANAGER sighs.
MANAGER
…Four hours for just a single cup of joe.
So, you’re REN? [So, you’re the guy.]
[To sometimes I will add what the character actually says in brackets. Feel free to choose which one you use!]
REN
Is SAKURA-san here?
MANAGER
…Yeah.
MANAGER
I’m SOJIRO SAKURA. You’ll be in my custody over the next year.
I was wondering what kind of unruly kid would show up, but you’re the one, huh?
Have you been told? A customer of mine and your parents know each other and-
Well, not that that matters… Follow me.
SOJIRO walks up some stairs in the background and REN follows. The stairs reach to a dusty ATTIC with a bunch of trash bags and other unused things in it.
SOJIRO
This is your room.
I’ll at least give you sheets for your bed.
You look like you wanna say something.
REN
It’s big.
SOJIRO
It’s on you to clean up the rest.
I’ll be leaving after I lock up each day.
You’ll be alone at night, but don’t do anything stupid. I’ll throw you out if you cause any trouble.
Now then…
I got the gist of your situation.
You protected some woman from a man forcing himself on her, he got injured, then sued you. Right?
That’s what you get for sticking your nose in a matter between two adults. You did injure him, yeah?
…And now that you’ve got a criminal record, you were expelled from your high school.
The courts ordered you to transfer and move out here, which your parents also approved.
In other words, they got rid of you for being a pain in the ass.
It’s best you not talk about anything unnecessary. I am in the restaurant business, you know.
Behave yourself for the year. If nothing happens, your probation will be lifted.
REN
A whole year…
SOJIRO
Cause any problems, and you’ll be sent straight to juvie.
We’ll be going to SHUJIN tomorrow.
REN
SHUJIN?
SOJIRO
SHUJIN ACADEMY- the school you’ll be attending.
We’ll introduce ourselves properly to the staff there.
There’s rarely a place that’ll accept someone like you, you know.
What a waste of my Sunday…
Your “luggage” arrived a little while ago. I brought it up here for you.
SOJIRO leaves the ATTIC and REN. REN moves to the center of the room to look around.
REN
(Thinking) I’ll be living here starting today…
I should check out what’s in here…
REN examines a cardboard box in the center of the room.
REN
(Thinking) It’s the cardboard box sent from back home…
It’s full of clothes and daily necessities. I’ll change into more comfortable clothes for now.
REN changes to some casual clothes before he continues looking around. He walks around the room.
REN
(Thinking) I guess I should clean the room while I’m organizing things…
(See dusty table) It’s a table covered in dust.
If I draw a line in the dust with my finger, it’ll probably be really easy to see…
(See unused items)There are all these unused household items lying here. It’s not organized at all…
(After finishing viewing the room) I should start cleaning first…
REN starts cleaning.
6 LEBLANC CAFÉ ATTIC - EVENING 04/09/2016 CONTINUOUS
After a montage showing REN cleaning the ATTIC, WE OPEN to REN standing in the center of a now cleaned ATTIC, noticing the time.
REN
(Thinking) It’s late… It seems like I’ve been cleaning for a while.
SOJIRO comes up the stairs.
SOJIRO
What the heck? I heard you making all sorts of noise up here but I didn’t think you were cleaning.
SOJIRO looks around the room with approval and a hand on his chin.
SOJIRO
Actually, the place doesn’t look too bad.
Though it’s only natural you’d want to keep your room tidy.
Why don’t you go to bed for tonight? You don’t have anything better to be doing, right?
I’m going to close up shop and get out of here myself.
I won’t be the one looking after you if you get sick from staying up too late, you got that?
SOJIRO leaves the ATTIC. REN walks over to the bed.
REN
Starting today, this is my room…
REN changes into sleepwear and lays in bed, thinking about everything that has happened.
REN
(Thinking) Arrest… trial…
Criminal record…

Damn brat… I’ll sue!
END FLASHBACK
LEBLANC CAFÉ ATTIC - EVENING 04/09/2016
REN
(Thinking) Still, I couldn’t just let that go…
The scene turns to black as REN continues thinking about that day.
REN
(Thinking) That day…
I ended up going home late…
FADE OUT:
7 HOMETOWN NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT ??/??/2015-16
WE OPEN to REN walking home in the dark. He overhears things as he walks down the empty sidewalk.
DRUNK MAN
Just get in the car!
STRUGGLING WOMAN
Stop it!
REN stops at the noise.
REN
(Thinking) I can hear a man and a woman arguing in the distance…
I think they’re just up ahead…
REN walks towards the source of the noise to investigate.
DRUNK MAN
How dare you cross me!
STRUGGLING WOMAN
Stop it! Let me go!
REN arrives and takes in the scene from a distance.
STRUGGLING WOMAN
No…!
DRUNK MAN
Don’t give me that shit…
REN
(Thinking) It looks like that drunk man is bothering that woman…
STRUGGLING WOMAN
Ow! P-Please, stop…!
REN
(Thinking) She’s in danger…
I have to save her.
REN walks towards the two before stopping in front of the car.
DRUNK MAN
Tch… what a waste of time.
You think you’re worth causing me trouble? Huh?
STRUGGLING WOMAN
I-I’ll call the police!
DRUNK MAN
Heh, call them if you want!
The police are my bitches. They’re not going to take you seriously.
STRUGGLING WOMAN
No… stop!
Police siren can be heard in the distance. The woman freezes.
DRUNK MAN
Someone called the cops, huh?
Get in the car!
Incompetent fools like you just need to shut your mouths and follow where I steer this country!
DRUNK MAN finally notices REN standing behind him. He lets go of the woman, who is still frozen, to turn to look at REN
DRUNK MAN
…What’re you looking at? Get outta my face!
This ain’t a show. Get lost, kid.
See? This is all because you’re so damn slow!
Get in the car!
END FLASHBACK
8 LEBLANC CAFÉ ATTIC - EVENING 04/09/2016
WE OPEN to Ren still awake and looking at the ceiling. He has an angry look on his face. He closes his eyes to sleep. Suddenly, REN's phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket to check it. He becomes confused. The APP he deleted earlier is back and pulsing red.
REN
(Thinking) Hm, it’s that weird app that somehow ended up on my phone…
The icon looks almost like an eye…
It’s so creepy…
REN deletes the app again. He puts down the phone.
REN
(Thinking) My eyelids are starting to get heavy…
REN closes his eyes to go to sleep.
