Dukkra

Chapter 5: Coda: Rainfall

Summary:

One story's end is another story's beginning.

Chapter Text

Coruscant

The Jedi Temple’s destruction blew into the atmosphere nearly a cubic mile of materials, all of which collapsed back down onto the temple, and (deliberately) the wellspring. The effect, equivalent to the Earth disaster of a 2 KM asteroid impact, led to world wide disasters and uncounted deaths. The carbon-harvesting industry on Coruscant was abruptly halted, causing a Republic wide economic collapse. Surviving Senators were evacuated back to their home worlds, because the planet-city did not have the capacity to care for them.

How did Bail Organa survive the temple disaster? Plot armor. Obi-wan had the dechipped 212th kidnap him and so he and most of the embassy staff were off-world. 500 Republica was possible for Obi-Wan to infiltrate on his own, but not when he had to coordinate the evacuation of the temple. Coded messages to Padme Amidala’s handmaidens went unanswered as Palpataine had her collected and brought to the senate as security before his march to the temple. She did not go quietly, and as such, key members of her staff were shot by a chipped Coruscant guard. She was under arrest in the Senate dome when the Emperor was killed.

Kamino

During the Clone wars, at any one given time, 1.2 million clones active ground troops, supported by another 120,000 fighter pilots, and 420,000 support staff. Decommission rates (because clones didn’t die; they were just destroyed or recycled) averaged about 15% per year, requiring at least another 420,000 troops to be ready to replace their brothers over the course of the year. This was slightly faster than the Kamino’s generation structure (174000 non-decommished clones per class year) would allow, which explains why they had to invest in Speedies to meet demands. At the end of year one, Kamino was in a two class deficit, which made them send 8 and 9 year olds to the front. Year two trooper total dipped until there was limited catch-up in year 3 when all Kamino bound clones were given an ultra-accelerated aging, allowing all clones older than four Coruscanti years to be sent to the front. To make up for readiness deficits, in year 3 the stasis bound Alphas were recommissioned and pet projects for special operations teams were sent off Kamino. Injured front line troops, regardless of teaching ability or training, were circled back to Kamino to prepare the next class of troopers. In year 4, the final year of the Clone Wars, the newest of the front line troops had only 1 year of basic training, and had started that year with a 4 year old body. On Order day, this left the republic with 2 million clones on duty, and another 900,000 on Kamino in various stages of development. Clone deaths on Order day are unclear, but less than 200,000 clones remained in arms at the end of the day, mostly on forward operating bases, where Order 66 was executed without fail. Kamino’s population remained around 900,000 including the tubies. With the destruction of Coruscant and the activation of order 66, Kaminoan efforts to halt operations (due to lack of future funds, death of their employer) were met with stiff resistance from Clones with active chips who were expecting additional orders from their Emperor. Kaminoan scientists and deaths have not been recorded, but it is clear that after the Kamino revolt was put down, that an insufficient number of Kaminoans remained in the cloning facilities to maintain the current or next generation. The clones of Kamino were starving to death when the remaining Jedi/GAR fleet mounted an evacuation and dechipping operation. The operation, however, was mostly unsuccessful. Order day remains a day of mourning on several mid-rim and outer rim worlds with large GAR descendant populations.

Mandalore

Ahsoka and the 328th never left Mandalore.

She was standing to the right of Bo-Katan when Ben arrived, with Cody and the 212st at his back. Order 66 had occurred while Ahsoka was on her way to Coruscant, and there had been a fight between the natborn bridge crew and the unchipped 328th that resulted in a return to mandalore to make sure that the unchipped platoons still on planet hadn’t gone awol. After the Jedi-loyal GAR elements left, Ahsoka had stayed there, waiting for word from Coruscant of what was going on and recovering from the severing of her bond with Anakin. She remained in Mandalore with her men throughout the first reign of Bo-Katan, Mand’alor the Unsuccessful. To avoid conflict with the Republic and the Separatist Alliance (still going strong, their leadership alive and causing problems) she banished the 328th. They took to the stars, only to return at the request of Ursa Wren, Mand’alor the Unforgiving, and help end the thirty year civil war.

The Rim

In the chaos following the death of the republic, the Separatist alliance also fell to pieces. The military leadership, under General Grievous, found themselves at the end of their own droid blasters when the leadership of the Trade Federation and banking clans decided that it was no longer profitable to keep the war going. The banking clans, reeling from the unexpected destruction of major assets on Coruscant, did their best to use monetary policy to keep the galactic economy afloat, but faced multiple years of recession which mostly panicked their short-live clients, and annoyed their longer lived ones. But, through their extensive contacts with the Neutral Systems, they succeed. In doing so, they effectively damned worlds that had capital losses due to the war (namely, every battle front) to a generation of economic depression, creating a gigantic refugee crisis.

Amidst the chaos, the Hutt Clans took prompt advantage and began taking over worlds on the edges of their holdings more formally. Sentient trafficking also increased, until heads of the major Hutt Clans were found after their annual conclave. Several Hutt lords who resided outside of the Hutt Systems died shortly before or after the conclave. The Hutts turned inward and on each other to gain control of the Hutt Empire. It was Alderaan and Corellia who called for the formation of a new Republic. Mostly a republic of economic and trade relationships, each system was expected to provide its own security. Calls for the Jedi to lead a new Judiciary fleet were shot down by the Green Jedi and ignored by the Traditionalists. Piracy on the hyperlanes was rampant until Ursa Wren locked down the three major hyperlanes and began charging for Mandalorian protection. The Corellian run was promptly locked down by Correllia who manned the way stations with their own security forces. Smaller runs continued to be plagued by piracy until Honda Ohnaka guaranteed free passage for a fee to trading vessels that provided him with annual tribute. Flying the Florum became common among most traders in the mid-rim. The Trade Federation attempted to use its own droids to protect its cargo, but also found them vulnerable to hacking and ion attacks which made their vessels the prime targets for privateers and pirates.

The Freed continued their work, as always from the shadows, to liberate the depuran and to destroy depur. That works continues today, even unto this world.

Notes:

So many notes, but let's start with the acknowledgements.

A huge thanks to Fialleril for the creation of the Tatootine Slave Culture. I've told Ekkerth stories and Double Agent Vader stories to very young children who now run around talking about red birds and believe Vader was in secret cahoots with the Rebellion all along. Also thanks to they many who expanded on those stories, the language, and the culture. You can find easter eggs referencing their variants thorughout this work.

I pulled the trickster tales here from African-American slave stories, Indigenous American trickster tales, the Arabian nights, and Sephardic/Mizrahi culture. However, this first tale is grounded in another fanfiction epic, Re-entry by Flamethrower, in which Obi-wan Kenobi learns the trick of escaping from force supression collars and how to use the force to dissolve items/people into their molecular and atomic components.

The history of slavery told in this fic is grounded in Star Wars, but also in Earth empires. Mining slaves have existed as long as there are mines, and they exist today. We have decent records of mining slavery from the Greeks and the Romans, who typically kept slaves in the mines until they died. More modern work on mining slavery has focused on the forced labor of children on every continent except Antartica. The International Labor Organizaiton puts out heart breaking reports on chlid slavery and the affects of mining on chld slaves every year, including this one. By their estimate, there as many child slaves on the planet as there are children in the United States.

Finally, I will not claim that my Ekkreth stories are as clever those told by others. I am not a natural storyteller.

But I hope you will enjoy them.
