    Summary

    Grian falls.

Dust and desert sand mingling with the blue of the sky and the green of cacti as he tumbles head over heels, and he’s afraid, he’s so afraid, but there’s only one way to end the game, and the fall is long.

Good. He’s glad that he will be lingering in the air for what feels like years. It will give him time to think, to process the overwhelming guilt and horror.

Or, there is a world where friends, family, and the fallen gather to welcome back each player who returns from Third Life. Grian wakes up there as a victor, unable to breathe.

Third Life had a greater effect on Grian than he’d like to admit. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much of a choice.

    Summary

There are dots swimming in front of Grian’s eyes.

Or, Grian has been working hard, recently, to make sure that the Double Life server is ready to run without a hitch. Fixing bugs, making sure that all deaths are smooth and easy, all of the normal Admin duties. But he’s tired. Void, he’s so tired.

    Summary

    Grian is miserable.

He hasn’t preened in—a while, admittedly. And, look, that’s for quite a few reasons, okay? He’s been insanely busy working on his base, as Impulse and Gem and Scar have forced him to do. Impulse and Gem, especially, who crafted a glorified time bomb above his beautiful Dwayne the Rock. So forgive him if he’s been a bit focused on making sure that all his hard work doesn’t go to waste. Plus, there was that thing with the tunnel bore, and he’s been so busy with trying to collect supplies for Doc after that whole mess. Besides, the paranoia has been eating at him, since he wouldn’t put it past Doc to somehow mess with his base. Or, Void-forbid, his nest.

Grian can't take a break. Not even to take care of his wings.

Or, Grian’s wings are so itchy that he’s half considering tearing them off, at this point, and there’s only one person who can help.

Only thing, though—has Scar ever preened wings, before?

    Summary

Grian wakes up, clutching at his chest and his wings flailing and with a scream stuck in his throat. It never makes its way out of his mouth—there’s something blocking it.

He’s not alone in the room; he can feel hands gripping his shoulders and his face, and there are voices all around him. They’re shouting something, loud and urgent, and Grian flinches back at the noise, raising his hands to his ears. He wants to beg them to be quiet, but his mouth won’t work.

“He’s back, Grian’s back!” someone calls, and the pounding of footsteps echoes in his ears. A hand moves to cup his cheek, and a familiar voice is saying something, trying to soothe him, maybe. He clutches at the person’s wrist, and they rub their thumb against his skin, and he feels safe for a moment.

He tries to ask what happened. He can’t.

Or, Third Life was never a game. It was always meant to be a way to torture those who disobeyed the Watchers.
When Grian returns from Third Life, he returns with no voice.

    Summary

Grian wakes up with the taste of iron in his mouth and no clue why he feels so empty. His heart is beating too fast, and when he raises his hands in front of his face, he can’t understand why he expects them to be stained with crimson.

The winner of Third Life forgets, and everyone else remembers.
Or, Grian can’t remember Third Life. But something in his brain stores those memories, and he doesn’t know why he’s so afraid of everything and everyone—or why they’re all so afraid of him.
