Chapter Text

I saw you on the news. Hope everything's ok.

Kara blinked the rain out of her eyes and re-read the message, trying and failing to think of any way it could be taken besides the obvious, terrifying implication that hovered within those simple disarming sentences.

Does she know? She must, she'd have to. Kara hadn't been visibly on the TV as herself since her interview with Dreamer, and to her knowledge nowhere was re-running it, nor would a re-run elicit such a message from Lena.

No, the only reason she'd have been on the news was the fight with those Liberty goons. A fight where she was definitely not dressed as one Kara Danvers!

Her gut swooped. How to respond? Something casual? Yeah, that could work! Not acknowledging anything, but not outright ignoring it either.

Her hands shook slightly as her thumbs blurred across the screen.

All good here. Finishing up at work soon. Still on for movie night tonight?

As she moved under a nearby awning to get out of the downpour she found herself once again wishing she'd told Lena outright at some point, any point in the past. There was always some excuse, someone saying no, some reason for keeping the status quo. A notification sounded on her phone, pulling her from the spiral she was starting down.

already ordered your favorite from stiltons, accompanied by a picture of a smiling Lena sitting on her white couch, legs up, pajamas on & a glass of red already in hand.

She looked unfettered, and gorgeous. Normally movie nights were held at Kara's due to (in her opinion) the superior sitting experience offered by her couch, but her TV was currently accidentally only slightly very very broken, so they'd relocated for the next few weeks.

"Kara!"

Alex ran up to her, her DEO tactical suit's hydrophobic coating causing droplets of water to form as they ran down it, making her sparkle in the yellow glow of the streetlight like a vampire out of Twilight. If Kara hadn't been so thrown by the text she'd have ribbed Alex about it for a good hour, but instead she wordlessly turned her phone around so Alex could see the screen.

Her sister's eyes scanned quickly up the conversation, widening almost imperceptibly when they reached that first message, the one that had Kara feeling all sorts of... not sure what, but something.

"Well, that's unambiguous." she said after a moment, an errant wisp of red hair plastered to her forehead in a near-exact parody of Kara's cousin.

"You sure?" Kara couldn't help but let the fear leak into her voice, "couldn't there be at least a little bit of ambiguousness.. ambiguity?"

Alex's eyebrows did that thing where you could hear her saying "really!?" without any words, causing Kara's cheeks to redden.

"Well it's not like I've told her or anything!" Kara pouted.

Alex softened immediately. "No, and that's as much my fault as it is anyone else's."

Kara was surprised. Every time she'd mentioned telling Lena in the past it had been no room for argument, but it sounded like Alex was suggesting..

"I mean, she's proven herself to us time and again, you know? And clearly she's already figured something out." Alex nodded toward the phone meaningfully.

"besides, Kelly sides with you too often on game nights. I need someone else in my corner!" Kara scoffed indignantly at Alex's smirk.

"You'll be fine." Alex leant into the super and wrapped her arms around her. "and if not, I'll throw her into the sun."

At that Kara laughed, hugging Alex back.

Stepping back, Alex rested her hands on Kara's shoulders, squeezing tightly. "Right, I'm heading back to the DEO to deal with a mountain of paperwork. You go get the girl." she turned and left a furiously blushing Kara behind her, already motioning to the other DEO agents who were finishing securing the scene.

Heading home to get changed, will be over soon.

She was in the air before the send notification had finished making a noise, landing on her balcony a moment later.

Call me when you get home.

Before Kara had a moment to even think about the meaning behind this new twist her phone was ringing, Lena's eyes filling up the frame behind the caller ID. She answered.

"Uh... Hi."

"Hi yourself." The voice on the other end was warm and soft, a far cry from the voice Kara had heard her use when staring down the board or competitors, she could hear the slight chuckle in it.

"I thought I'd give you a moment, but then I'd assumed you may be freaking out slightly? Plus the likelihood of you already being at home by now..." a slight hint of nervousness had crept into Lena's voice

"I realize I may have.. implied something in my text earlier, and I would love to say it was the wine but I haven't actually drunk any yet. Now we can totally ignore it, I know it's not my place to talk about such things what with my family and all..."

"No!" Kara interrupted Lena's rambling, cutting through the rising panic she'd heard in the Luthor's voice. "It's nothing to do with that, with them. It's... I've just been.. I've wanted to tell you for so long and.. I.." Kara grimaced, "actually, can we do this in person? I need to tell you this. I want to.. let you in to this part of my life. To all of my life, honestly." there was a gasp on the other end of the phone.

"But I think if I'm going to say what I need to say, I'd prefer to say it in person, if that's ok with you?"

There was a moment of silence, the longest moment in Kara's life, before a nearly breathless response that caused her to smile uncontrollably "I would love that, Kara."
