Chapter Text
The alarm shrieked at 7:30 a.m., piercing through the remnants of Kara's karaoke-induced dreams. Groaning, she slapped the snooze button and burrowed deeper into her blankets. Fifteen minutes later, the alarm blared again. This time, she flung out an arm, silencing it without opening her eyes. It wasn't until 8 o'clock that she finally stirred, feeling a light breeze whisper through the crack in the window left ajar.
Autumn had draped National City in a tapestry of amber and gold. The temperature was pleasant, the sun casting a warm glow over the bustling streets below. Kara stretched, listening to the rustle of leaves and the distant hum of morning traffic. It felt like a perfect day for rescuing kittens from trees or stopping petty crimes.
But then reality crashed in. She had promised Ms. Grant she would be at CatCo early to help set up for the most anticipated interview of the century — an exclusive with Supergirl.
"Oh Rao," Kara muttered, scrambling out of bed. How could she have forgotten? The interview was set for 7 p.m., prime-time television. For weeks, the citizens of National City had been buzzing with speculation. Would Supergirl reveal her true identity? Share secrets of her past? The world was poised on the edge of their seats.
As she hurried to get ready, Kara's mind raced. She had never been one to crave the spotlight, but tonight, every eye would be on her. And she had to be careful. One slip of the tongue, and her dual life could come crashing down.
With a smile spreading across her face, Kara headed to the kitchen, the promise of pancakes brightening her mood. The scent of batter sizzling on the griddle soon filled the air, a divine aroma that made her stomach growl in anticipation. As she flipped the golden pancakes, her phone vibrated on the counter. Wiping her hands on a dish towel, she picked it up and saw a message from her sister, Alex.
"Hey, sis! Just checking if you are ready for tonight. If not, dont't worry, I can always put on the Supersuit ;)"
Kara chuckled, the tension easing from her shoulders. Alex always knew how to lift her spirits exactly when she needed it. Her sister’s support was a cornerstone of her life — something worth mentioning to Ms. Grant in the interview.
"HAHAHA, you're so funny! Would you wear a wig as well? I don't think people are gonna believe I'm red-haired!" - Kara typed back, her fingers flying over the keyboard.
Still smiling at her sister's playful banter, Kara was jolted back to the present by the smell of burning pancakes. "Oh no!" she exclaimed, rushing to the stove. In a flash, she used her cold breath to cool the overcooked edges. The steam dissipated, and she took a cautious bite, relieved to find them still delicious.
After breakfast, Kara slipped into her human clothes — her familiar glasses, a white blouse, and a skirt that allowed her to blend in seamlessly. She decided to walk to CatCo, the crisp autumn air refreshing and the sunlight glinting off the skyscrapers. It was going to be a long day. She needed to help Cat with the interview questions, choose the best setting for the interview, and, most challenging of all, ensure that Cat didn’t realize she was Supergirl during their conversation.
As she approached CatCo, a shiver of anxiety ran down her spine. Tonight's interview loomed large in her mind. She greeted Marco, the doorman, who was practically bouncing on his feet with excitement.
"Are you ready for tonight?" he asked, his eyes shining with anticipation.
Kara found it amusing how, despite his lack of knowledge about her true identity, his question hit the mark. "As eager as you!" she replied with a warm smile.
They shared a laugh, and Kara made her way to the elevator. As she ascended to the top floor, her thoughts swirled around the evening ahead. The elevator doors opened to a burst of energy. Nia, her best friend, rushed towards her, speaking at a rapid pace that Kara struggled to follow.
"...and then Cat said she wants you in her office ASAP," Nia concluded, her eyes wide with urgency.
Kara nodded, piecing together the gist of Nia's hurried speech. "Got it. Thanks, Nia." She took a deep breath and walked towards Cat's office, steeling herself for the whirlwind of preparations and the crucial interview to come.
"Okay, Kiera. Let's get started, because I don't pay you to do nothing. Chop-chop.". Cat Grant commanded the moment Kara stepped into her office.
Kara barely had time to catch her breath before they plunged into a whirlwind of planning. They went over every detail of the upcoming interview, from the lighting to the wording of each question. By the end of the afternoon, Kara felt she had handled the storm that was Cat Grant admirably. She had suggested some intriguing questions, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that Cat was holding back, perhaps saving the most sensational ones for a dramatic reveal.
As the clock ticked towards 6:30 p.m., a knot of anxiety tightened in Kara's stomach. She had no idea how she was going to slip away as Kara Danvers and reappear as Supergirl in time for the interview. She needed an excuse, and fast.
"Nia!" Kara called out, spotting her friend nearby. "I really need to get out of here to... you know. But Cat doesn't give me a chance to just vanish. Can you help?"
Nia, always quick to support, nodded without hesitation. "Sure, I'll distract her. If she asks about you, I'll just tell her you were feeling sick."
Kara breathed a sigh of relief. "You are a lifesaver!"
As Nia moved towards Cat’s office to create the necessary diversion, Kara slipped out, her heart pounding. She had to transform into Supergirl and return without raising any suspicion. The world was waiting, and she couldn't afford to let them down.
When the clock struck five to seven, Supergirl appeared on the balcony of CatCo Worldwide Media. A sudden hush fell over the bustling office, and everyone turned to stare at her. Whispers rippled through the room, and Kara felt a bit lost. It was strange to receive this reaction from people she knew well but who didn't know her true identity.
Trying to maintain her composure, she approached the nearest intern, who happened to be Nia Nal. "Excuse me, can you point me to the direction where the interview is going to happen, please?" she asked politely.
Nia, fully aware that Kara was Supergirl, played along with the act, pretending to be as awestruck as everyone else. "Of course, right this way," she said, her voice tinged with mock surprise.
Nia led Kara to the interview room where Cat was waiting. Supergirl took a seat in the armchair prepared for her. Right at 7 p.m., the cameras went live, and CatCo began its exclusive interview with the Girl of Steel.
The camera focused on Cat Grant, who, despite her excitement, maintained a facade of calm professionalism for the introduction.
"Citizens of National City and the world, please welcome, for the most anticipated night of the year, the strongest person on Earth, the Girl of Steel, Supergirl!"
The camera panned to Kara. Although she was confident in her Supergirl persona, she felt a twinge of nervousness with all the cameras trained on her.
"Thank you, Ms. Grant! It's an honor to be here with you and all the people of National City!"
"Cat is just fine," Cat interjected with a warm smile, trying to ease the tension. She knew she wouldn’t survive the night if Supergirl kept calling her Ms. Grant. "And trust me, the pleasure is all ours!"
"So..." Cat continued, leaning forward slightly, "I'm going to ask you some questions about becoming Supergirl. Why did you decide to show your powers the night of the plane crash? I mean, you didn't even have a super suit then."
Supergirl nodded, her expression thoughtful. "That's a good question. That night was both the best and one of the worst of my life. The best because it was the moment I realized I could make this world a safer place. The worst because if I hadn't been watching television when the plane was crashing, I would have lost the most important person in my life — my sister. She's the one who trained me, kept me safe when I arrived on Earth, and showed me that even after everything I lost, there's still love and happiness for me here."
Cat smiled softly, her eyes reflecting genuine empathy. "It seems to be true what they say: even superheroes need their heroes."
"When you're not saving the world, what are you doing?" Cat asked, a curious gleam in her eye.
'Working for you,' Kara thought wryly but responded with a smile. "Eating, singing, and hanging out with my friends. Just like a normal person."
Cat smiled back. "I'm glad to know your life isn't just about beating up bad guys! Speaking of those friends, do they know your true identity?"
"Some of them. It's not because I don't trust them — 'cause I do, it's for their safety. The less they know, the better."
Cat nodded understandingly. "I see a reference to Tame Impala. What's your favorite genre of music?"
"I'm a pop girl at heart, but my sister loves indie and rock, so I've grown fond of those too."
Cat grinned. "I'm pretty sure people on Twitter right now want to be your sister. So, how is it for her to be sisters with Supergirl?"
Kara laughed, her eyes twinkling. "And I quote, 'Sometimes I understand Lex Luthor; you're too annoying.' End of quote."
Cat laughed, clearly caught off guard by the joke. "You have a great sense of humor!"
"Thank you, it's one of my many charms!" Kara winked at the camera. All the shyness she felt earlier had vanished; she was now completely at ease.
Cat had asked all the basic questions she had planned with Kara Danvers beforehand, but now she was ready to introduce something they hadn't discussed — a game.
"So, Supergirl, how about we play a little game called 'Quick Answer'? It consists of me asking you simple questions like 'What's your favorite food?' and you answering with the first thing that comes to your mind."
"Let's do it!" Kara responded eagerly.
"Okay, what is your favorite food?"
"Potstickers."
"Favorite movie?"
"Tangled. I'm also a Disney girl."
"Cat or dog?"
"Both, but I love puppies so much!"
"You're doing great. Now let's increase the level of difficulty with some more controversial questions from Twitter. For starters: Who do you love the most on Earth?"
"Chaos in the 'Super' family. I love you, cousin, but my sister is the one I love the most."
"That was a quick answer. Do you also have ultra-fast thinking?"
"Not really, but I know that if I had answered differently, I wouldn’t be here tomorrow to tell the story," Kara joked.
"Is she more powerful than Superman?"
"Powerful, I'm not sure. But scarier, definitely," Kara replied, making Cat laugh.
"Going back to the questions, we've just talked about the person you love the most. So, who do you hate the most?"
"Easy. Lex Luthor. He makes me work when I just want to sleep," Kara said humorously, and Cat chuckled.
"Who is your celebrity crush?" Kara's cheeks turned red as she hesitated, embarrassed by the first thought that came to her mind. She paused, unsure how to proceed. Cat noticed the change in her demeanor.
"No cheating, Supergirl. Tell us who the first person you thought of is," Cat prompted.
"It's embarrassing because I have met her before."
"Her?" Cat echoed, intrigued.
"Yeah," Kara was flustered, as she hadn't come out to the public yet.
Cat's eyes sparkled with excitement. This revelation was going to make headlines. "This is so important for the LGBTQ+ community, but don't think you can escape the question, Supergirl. I still want to know who the first girl you thought of is."
Kara took a deep breath. "I'm a girl of dualities, you know; I can hate one and have a crush on another. The first person that came to mind was Lena Luthor."
To say Cat was stunned would be an understatement. Her jaw practically hit the floor. No one, not even in her wildest dreams, could have predicted that answer. The revelation sent shockwaves through Twitter, igniting a frenzy of #Supercorp hashtags. And to top it all off, Lena Luthor herself had posted a picture of her watching the interview at its start, ensuring she saw firsthand that the Girl of Steel harbored a crush on her. It was a moment that would undoubtedly make headlines and spark conversations for days to come.
Cat thanked Supergirl for the interview and wrapped up the program. With a whoosh, Supergirl soared into the sky, leaving behind the ordinary facade of Kara Danvers. Her phone immediately sprang to life, buzzing incessantly with a barrage of messages from her super-friends.
Kara returned home, collapsing onto her bed to check her notifications. She couldn't resist the pull of Twitter and quickly found herself immersed in the aftermath of Supergirl's surprising revelation.
@LenaLuthor
"Just when I thought today couldn't get any more surprising... Thank you for the unexpected shoutout, @Supergirl. Intrigued to learn more about this "celebrity crush" ;) #Supercorp #GirlOfSteel"
Kara's heart raced as she scrolled through the replies to Lena's tweet. The flood of reactions was overwhelming, each one sending her pulse skyrocketing. Some were supportive, others speculative, but all were filled with curiosity and excitement. She felt like she was on the edge of a precipice, about to take a leap into the unknown.
With trembling fingers, Kara composed a response, trying to convey her feelings without revealing too much:
@Supergirl
"Surprises all around today! Thanks for the gracious response, Ms. Luthor. Perhaps we can chat about it sometime :) #Supercorp #GirlOfSteel"
As she hit send, Kara couldn't help but wonder what the future held. This revelation had opened a door to a whole new chapter in her life, and she was both terrified and exhilarated to see where it would lead.
Kara went through her usual evening routine — having dinner, taking a shower, and slipping into bed. But despite her efforts, she couldn't shake thoughts of Lena from her mind. So she decided to listen to the brunet's heartbeat to see if she could fall asleep, but she realized Lena was awake. With that in mind, she went to Lena's penthouse for a visit.
The flight to Lena's home was swift and quiet. The smell of the trees penetrated Kara's nose. She was nervous, but she really wanted to do this. So she stepped down on Lena's porch, and saw Lena starring right at it.
"I was expecting you. I wasn't sure if you were gonna come though."
"Why wouldn't I?"
"You know why: a Super and a Luthor, it was too good to be true"
Kara stepped closer, her heart pounding. "Lena, we’re not defined by our last names. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true. You’re more than a Luthor, and I’m more than just a Super."
Lena's eyes softened, and a small smile played at her lips. "You’re right. We are more than our names. But you surprised me today. In a good way."
Kara chuckled nervously. "I guess I did. I didn’t mean to put you on the spot."
Lena shook her head, her smile growing. "It was a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. Maybe we should start with that chat."
Kara smiled, feeling the weight of the day lifting from her shoulders. "I’d like that."
As they walked into Lena's penthouse, Kara felt a sense of hope and excitement for what the future might hold. The night had been full of revelations, but perhaps the most important one was the possibility of something new and beautiful between them.
