What If...

Chapter 6: Nothing Left to Lose

Chapter Text

Blitz stood in the cold dark chamber, his eyes locked on the crystal hourglass pinched between his thumb and index finger. It blurred from his peripheral as he focused on the withered Goetia standing just beyond the glowing marvel. With a soft sigh, Blitz pressed the stone back into Mephisto’s hand and stepped away.

“Fizz is right, it could always end up worse. Besides, things aren’t all that bad.” Blitz smiled and turned back to the small clown, who was smiling, his hands clutching over his chest as if he were overwhelmed by Blitz’s resolve.

The moment was shattered by the Goetia snarl, “Who the fuck do you think you are?” Mephisto took a step closer, gripping Blitz by his shoulder and spinning him back around. “Do you realize what you’ve done?”

“Yeah, I told you to hang this whole fake gift thing in your ass.” Blitz smirked. “You must think I’m stupid. Nothing comes for free, I get the happy ending that I choose but I’m too weak and tired to enjoy it because you’ve been using the crystal to leach my life essence to feed your weak ass.”

Mephisto’s low glowing eyes grew wide, “What, how?”

“You weren’t subtle about it, my guy. You were visually growing younger and cockier with each rotation I went through; that last one nearly sapped all my energy. One more might have killed me.” Blitz explained.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Fizz whispered to him.

“I’ll explain later.” Blitz said, taking his hand and pulling him behind him protectively.

Mephisto wound himself up tight with an infuriated growl belching free from his beak. A wind snapped to life, wafting an ill smelling stench across Blitz. Mephisto discarded his long jacket and his six black wings burst free. His once glowing blue eyes turned a fiery red as he grasped for his cane. Snatching the handle, he drew his long, shimmering blade and held the point towards the pair of smaller imps.

“Whoops.” Blitz squeaked.

“Whoops, what do you mean ‘whoops’? You have a plan, right?” Fizz cried out, pulling Blitz hard against him as they fell back from the encroaching figure.

“Have you no concept of who I am? For centuries, deals I’ve made, promises of a better future to all who wish it. All I ask is essences to renew my time wracked body, a promise for me to have another future, until one day someone’s sorrow would be strong enough to free me from this prison Lucifer locked me in.” Mephisto announced, lifting off the ground as he approached Blitz and Fizz, who were desperate to put distance between them and this madman. “All your plans are folly. Nothing you can weave is beyond my knowledge, I am Mephisto – the everlasting; Hell’s forgotten son. With your combined sorrows, I shall rise again and take my place on the throne of Hell evermore. Ahahaha -ack-”

There was a sharp squish that thrust Mephisto into a guttural silence. A spout of bluish black blood burst from his chest as something sleek glistened in the dull blue firelight. Mephisto dropped to the floor, slumping to his knees, his sword clattering to the floor.

From the shadows behind the madman, a tall slender figure in hues of red and black appeared. His pale face dipped close to Mephisto’s as if he may give him a departing kiss.

“Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door! Quoth the Raven ‘Nevermore.’”

“Alastor!” Mephisto struggled to say.

“Correct!” Alastor let out a triumphant laugh, before snapping down his jaws onto the Goetia’s neck with an impressive spray of blood.

Beneath Mephisto’s horrible cries, the harsh haunted whisperings filled the chamber, dozens of voices snaking through the very marble as Alastor’s shadow grew. Long antlers spread far and wide as his figure shifted to an almost feral shape of something once docile and simple. A prey turned into a spindly-legged predator was a horrific nightmare to beheld.

Blitz turned and wrapped his arms around Fizz, pulling him to the safety behind one of the many sarcophagi. Hugging him tightly, he pulled the smaller imp’s face into his chest as they huddled together. The whispers grew into deafening cries that shook the very core of Hell, Fizz cupped Blitz’s ears while Blitz covered his, making themselves as small as possible.

There was a whoosh that came, a shockwave that shattered the sarcophagi, littering the chamber with stone and remains. Then all the sound dropped out of the world, plunging Blitz and Fizz into silence.

“I-is it over?” Fizz whispered.

Blitz drew his gun and peeked over the tomb. Alastor was dabbing his lips with a lacy white handkerchief. When he saw Blitz, he fluttered a wave and beckoned him over.

“What the fuck was that?” Blitz asked, popping up from behind the broken tomb, Fizz following behind him.

“A demi-demon,” Alastor smiled. “A very powerful being who once vied for Hell’s throne. In his haste, he made mistakes that prompted all seven Sins to rise up against him at the behest of Lucifer, trapping him here for all time.”

“Oh,” Blitz nodded. “And at no time, did you think you should mention that?”

“You didn’t ask.” The Radio Demon said, a slight feedback in his vocoder.

Stooping down, he picked up the cane and the blade, sheathing it and offering it out to Blitz as a trophy. Still a little confused, the small imp took the cane without question.

“A fine gift.” Alastor mused. “As for you, my fine little fellow, I must congratulate you for not taking the crystal. Hell’s-know what might have happened if he would have become any stronger. I may not have been able to consume him.”

“Consume him?” Fizz whispered, looking at the Goetia’s hollowed out clothes in a pile on the floor.

“Yes.” Alastor said, his eyes flickering brighter for a second.

“So, what now?” Blitz asked.

“What now? Our deal is done and you’ve fulfilled your part of the bargain spectacularly.” Alastor said, flashing a brilliant smile. “As for you my clownish friend. I apologize for involving you, allow me to offer you this as a recompense.”

With a flick of his wrist, he manifested a crystal hourglass, holding it out to Fizz. “With this, you can go back through your life and undo any mistake you’ve made, ushering in a new more desirable future for yourself.”

“Ah, no thanks. I’m pretty happy with how things are.” Fizz said, closing the Radio Demon’s hand around the crystal.

“Suit yourself.” He chuckled, tumbling his cane over in his hand as a white light engulfed them.

When it cleared, they were, once again, standing in the boutique, everything exactly as it was before he’d come along. Fizz was still holding the shirt and vest combo up to Blitz as if nothing happened. Though something in Blitz’s eyes looked different, Fizz would have to be a fool to not notice.

“You alright? You seem a little out of sorts.” Fizz said, his raspy voice taking on a nurturing tone that Blitz had come to love.

Blitz touched his face and smiled. “Can we talk about it later? Right now, I’m exhausted and I really need to lay down.”

“Yeah, of course. Sit here for a sec, I’ll call my driver.” Fizz said, fishing out his phone and making the call.

Blitz used Mephisto’s cane to lower himself down on the bench, his other hand holding onto the hem of Fizzy’s shirt, a part of him worried that he might disappear into some unknown future if he let him go. With all of the timelines still swimming around his head all at once, it was hard to figure out which was the real one. Millie, Moxxie, Loona,...and Stolas, were they still alright? What about Barb and his mother? Was she dead? Was Barb still angry with him? It was enough to make his head hurt.

A soft kiss to the side of his head, brought him back, “Hey, the driver’s on the way. Let’s pay for our stuff and wait outside. Some fresh air might help.”

“The air quality’s shit out there and you know it.” Blitz said, working up a smirk.

Fizz laughed, “Yeah yeah, but it’s the same as anywhere. Come on, we’ll get you back to Ozzie’s and you can crash in our bed.”

“I won’t be putting you out?”

“You never put me out, Blitz.” He whispered softly, wrapping an arm around him as he hefted the taller imp to his feet, thanks to the cane, it wasn’t too difficult.

“Thanks, Fizz,” Blitz pushed his face into the clown’s shoulder.

After paying for their purchases, Blitz and Fizz slip out into the late afternoon to wait for their driver. The ride back to Ozzie’s was spent in relative silence. Blitz dozed in and out of consciousness as he battled with piecing together his broken psyche. When he found a piece that fit, he put it away while trying to discard the others. Not an easy process, but each step brought him closer to the resolve that he’d have to talk about this with Fizz. For now, he rested his head in the crook of the smaller imp’s neck, bathing in the soft cotton candy body spray that was sickly sweet and yet all so Fizzy, it almost brought tears to Blitz’s eyes.

When they reached Ozzie’s apartment, Fizz sent Blitz to strip down and get comfortable in bed, while he brought him a bottle of water. Alas, by the time the smaller imp returned to the bedroom. Blitz was laid half on the bed, still half dressed, with his boots still on.

“You fucking goober.” Fizz snickered, as he knelt down and pulled Blitz’s boots off.

Blitz stirred a little, releasing a sleepy moan that melted Fizzy’s heart. Without worrying about waking him up, he undid his belt and pulled off his tight jeans, leaving him in just his boxers; his preferred way of sleeping.

“What?” Blitz moaned.

“Get your ass up on the bed,” Fizzy giggled.

Blitz tried. Rolling over on his hands and knees, he crawled up the bed a few steps before face planting in the soft fabric of the duvet. Satisfied that it was the best Fizzy was going to get. He slipped out of his tight shorts and cockscomb, lying out next to Blitz on the bed. Enjoying the cool fabric against his skin as well.

In the quiet of the room, a soft moan escaped Blitz. It was followed by a whining hitch. Fizz lifted himself up on his elbow to look at the sleeping imp next to him. He always looked so much smaller when he slept, all bunched up in a fetal position like a beat dog. It always made Fizz feel so soft towards him.

Gently, he kissed him on the side of his head and whispered in his ear. “You’re alright, I’m here.”

Being closer to Blitz, brought another moan, softer this time. He shifted closer, burying his face in the crook of Fizzy’s arm, resting a heavy arm across his stomach. Only then, did he settle down in a peaceful sleep.

Whatever happened to Blitz down in the crypts had taken a significant toll on him, but Fizz couldn’t imagine the nightmares he’d seen, thankfully. Who was to say if he would have been strong enough to handle it. Even with everything that happened to him, it must be nothing compared to bearing the weight of being the one who caused so much turmoil to those he loved. Even if it was an accident, it must be a hellish burden to bear.

Fizz sighed and kissed Blitz’s forehead again, and whispered. “Thanks for being you, Blitz, messy, broken, and everything.”

A faint smile flicked to Blitz’s lips as he nuzzled into Fizz before settling again. Fizz lay there reflecting on his own internal turmoil until sleep snuck up on him. What a wild day, good thing it didn’t turn out worse.
