A Case Study In Human (or otherwise) Relations

Chapter 2

Summary:

Verr Goldet reviews some correspondence.

Chapter Text

A particular early morning at Wangshu Inn had one Verr Goldet leafing through a sizable amount of correspondence, as she usually did at that hour. A not insignificant amount of it were coded letters from Lady Ningguang, though there were also a hefty sum of invoices to file, organize, and report. She made a mental note to respond to them later on with that day’s set of intel.

Near the bottom of the sorted pile, however, there was a letter, addressed to Adeptus Xiao, from one Albedo Kreideprinz. Had Verr Goldet not checked the young man in and out of the inn a few weeks ago, she would have thrown the letter out on principle. Or kept it if only to alert Lady Ningguang of it simply because of how odd the occurrence was.

As it stood, though, she held in her hands a letter from a rather conscientious and respectable young man, and, according to intel from Lady Ningguang herself (even if it had been originally intel that the woman had gotten from the Yuheng before relaying to Verr Goldet), one that even Cloud Retainer approved of on some level. Just in case, she pried the wax seal off just enough to open the envelope and read the first few lines of the letter once, then again just to make sure she had understood its contents correctly.

…Maybe she read through it a third time. Not that her meddling would have been apparent, as with a candle’s flame and some dexterity, she was able to melt down the wax seal just enough to reattach it to the envelope’s paper and reseal it like new.

She dropped the letter off at the drawer where she kept the things reserved for the Vigilant Yaksha— often only occupied with a bottle of Remedium Tertiorum shipped straight from the heart of Liyue Harbor. It would be nice to finally have something else to surreptitiously hand the Yaksha whensoever he decided to show his face at Wangshu Inn.

Notes:

While I worked on this, two of my close friends went back and forth making bets over how long it was going to end up being. It was supposed to be at most 5k words. I don't know what happened. I at least hope it was enjoyable.
Many thanks to said two friends - feralcoffeebug here on ao3, and Moon (Moonlight_Pies on ao3) for emotional support. Genuinely couldn't have gotten this done without you two :")!

This is unbetaed/unedited at the moment; I'll probably come back to do that at some point.
