Aita for getting mad at my son for withholding important information?

I (44 m) have multiple kids who all join me in a dangerous but important hobby. I have always tried to get them to steer clear of it due to the risks but that simply leads them to participate in it on their own which increases the danger exponentially.
I have very strict rules in place as a safety precaution and not following the rules is a idiotic thing to do that ends up with someone getting hurt or doing something wrong. It has come out that one of my sons (17 m) knew crucial information and elected to keep it to himself.
This is not the first time he hid important facts and I doubt it will be the last however it is still something that is a betrayal in my eyes as well as plain dangerous. In this instance it did not just affect him but also our family and coworkers. When he offhandedly mentioned the info I did not react well. I'm still in the process of looking into what has been told.
I informed him it was a choice that could have been very harmful to not just himself but his loved ones and that I was extremely disappointed. He is also currently grounded. My butler seems to think I could have handled it better.
