Four Steps Right and Two Years Ahead

Chapter 8: Restructuring

Chapter Text

Nazuna lept up and darted over to Mika, with Shu not particularly far behind him.

“Kagehira!” Shu barked, sounding loud and stern rather than the concerned that everyone who had been there could tell he really was.

“Oshi-san! Nazuna-nii! You’re okay!” Mika grabbed for the both of them, “I was so worried - ya just disappeared, Oshi-san, and then Nazuna-nii -”

“We’re alright, Kagehira,” Shu interrupted him, “We’ve been here, ostensibly learning about the future.”

“Ostensibly?”

“Well, the whole thing’s been in code,” Rei spoke up, “As a result, we don’t really know all that much.”

“Not true!” Wataru let out something that sounded like a laugh, “We know that our heroes have been dealt a poor hand by life and by Eichi, but that yet they haven’t responded to their predicament!”

“Heroes?” Mika asked as Shu led him over to the couch.

“Tatsumi Kazehaya and then two otherS,” Natsume nodded, “We believe their names to be Heireo and AiraA.”

Shu sat down on the couch and gestured for Mika to sit next to him, which he did. Nazuna chose to seat himself across both their laps, in part because he’d already been on Shu’s lap before. Mika made a noise of surprise, but Shu coiled an arm around Nazuna’s side, so there he stayed.

“Here~” Kanata handed a couple things to Mika, who took them without protest.

“A… notebook and an empty pouch?”

“For taking notes,” Rei explained.

“And we get ‘paid’ to watcH, which we can use for a few different thingS.”

That’s how we were brought in.

“Ah! Thank ya kindly,” Mika smiled at Nazuna. “Er… what now?”

“Now, we wait for it to resume,” Shu sighed, “It has been taking a while so far, but -”

As soon as Shu said that, the screen lit up once more.

“Ah!” Rei perked up, “That’s the word we couldn’t figure out before!”

“Of course. Give me just a moment,” Rei was hunched over his notebook now.

Nazuna leaned into Shu’s hold, mentally noting the tightness of it. A fleeting moment, but one that he wanted to savor before it flew away.

How lovely was this place, a place where Nazuna could savor what he truly wanted - Shu’s love - for a bit longer. Without the pressure of an upcoming performance, or the existential dread that things were going to dissolve any moment.

It was nice to have reassurance that he was still wanted.

Eichi: ……

Mika frowned as he looked at Shu and Nazuna, feeling Shu’s arm around him like this. Why was he being treated… like Nazuna? That was new, that was weird! He wasn’t sure how he felt about it yet…

Wataru scrutinized the video, his thoughts awhir. “If they are being fired, then why is Kazehaya-kun seemingly arguing back to Eichi?”

“Why is it called being ‘fired’?” Kanata asked his own question instead of offering any possible explanations.

“Perhaps it is more complicated than it seemS?” Natsume offered his two cents.

“I suspect that Tenshouin-kun is more shrewd than I first thought,” Rei frowned.

“Tenshouin? Shrewd?” Shu snorted, “Is he not a spoiled child trying to throw his hat into a ring that he can’t physically keep up with?”

“Look at the way he holds himself, Shu,” Rei pointed out, “He’s confident. He runs that agency that employs at least these four idols, and one of them is rather famous. What we’re dealing with is not simply a spoiled brat.”

Shu frowned. “Still, that does not mean he's a decent idol in his own right.”

“No, it does not,” Rei sighed, “But it does mean that we need to be careful. More so than we thought.”

“Ayh’ll fight ‘im if ya need me ta, Oshi-san,” Mika leaned into Shu’s side.

“Kagehira, what do you mean by that?” Shu questioned, now more intrigued by Mika’s response than the actual goings-on on screen.

“It’s jus’... there’s someone Ayh lost uh long tayhme ago… Do ya think we could bring ‘er in?”

Nazuna blinked rapidly. A sister? He hadn’t known that Mika had a sister at all, much less a twin one. How had he not known that? Poor Mika… Nazuna would have to try harder to be there for him.

Shu pulled Mika closer. That he hadn’t known something like this about his doll - unthinkable.

Shu drew Mika impossibly closer still as the story continued to play out on screen without anyone really giving it much mind. Who would, when Mika had just said something so heart wrenching?

Okay, well. Wataru had still been attempting to pay attention. He really did want to figure out what was going on.

Eichi: Ex erc vexi, csy evir'x wymxefpi xs fi mhspw, ws csy'vi jmvih.

Kanata was slightly vexed by the current seating arrangements. He’d been sitting with Shu and Wataru at the start, but had been chased from that couch to this one by the arrival of Shu’s unitmates. Even so, Wataru looked a little crowded… was there anything Kanata could do to help?

Wataru frowned, eyes still trained on Eichi’s onscreen visage. His expression… strange and dismissive, slightly disgusted? What was - what did that mean? Was Eichi disgusted by the idols before him, or…?

There was so much missing. And while Wataru was able to ascertain some information from the body language alone, that wasn’t enough to truly understand the whole story.

“Rei, can you tell what he’s saying? I don’t understand this scene,” Wataru asked, gesturing to the screen.

Hiiro: "Pec sjj"... M wxmpp hs rsx orsa alex xlex qierw. Evi xlic pecmrk tistpi hsar wsqialivi?

“I’ll do my best, but I didn’t catch many individual words from Tenshouin-kun’s last line, I’ll have to try from Heireo’s line,” Rei sighed as he jotted down what he heard from said line.

All he got was ‘peck sedge’ and ‘alex xlex’, excluding words like M, which he already knew. Heck, he knew ‘alex xlex’ meant ‘what that’, but that didn’t help either!

Aira: Il, alc evi csy ewomrk qi? Ws yqq, M xlmro mx qierw "kixxmrk jmvih"! Tvsfefpc! Eq M vmklx?

‘Peck sedge’ gave Rei ‘layg oazca’, which… okay, it was probably ‘lay’, but what was ‘oazca’ supposed to be?

“All I got from Heireo’s line was ‘Lay… I… what that…’” Rei admitted. “My apologies, that wasn’t very helpful, was it?”

Tatsumi: Jyjy. Xs fi qsvi tvigmwi, mx'w e iytliqmwq jsv hmwqmwwmrk iqtpsciiw.

“Still, thank you,” Wataru turned back to the screen. That hadn’t really answered his question about Eichi’s feelings, but it was still something.

“...What is ‘oazca’ supposed to meaN?” Natsume leaned over to look at Rei’s notebook.

Eichi: Ew csy orsa, xlivi evi wizivep mhsp ekirgmiw mr IW—

“I can try,” Rei wrote the words down in his notebook, “But I can’t promise anything. Sometimes the way things are pronounced…”

“I would like to know why we are still listening to Tenshouin prattle on,” Shu cut in with a sniff, “As far as I’m concerned, he’s far overstayed his welcome.”

“These chapters are so long…” Kanata let himself puddle halfway out of his seat, “I want to move on already…”

“Well we can’t exactly make them go any fasteR…” Natsume, however, did not disagree with the sentiment.

Nazuna lit up and began writing in his notebook.

“What does that mean…” Kanata sounded more bored than curious.

“Eichi seems quite proud of StarPro!” Wataru commented, “His body language telegraphs that quite clearly!”

“I’ve never heard of a ‘StarPro’,” Shu glared at the screen in suspicion, “I don’t trust it.”

“Maybe he founded it?” Mika asked, “He’s rich, rayhght? Should have tha money fer that…”

“That would explain why he’s so proud of it!” Wataru said cheerily.

Hiiro: Ws, csy evi wecmrk xli jsyv sj yw evi xli xevkix sj xlmw "pec sjj"?

I know who Tatsumi-chin is! Nazuna held up his notebook for Mika to read, We went to church together.

I mean, we weren’t that close, but he seemed nice, Nazuna wrote down.

“Oh, okay,” Mika nodded, “Tha’s neat!”

Mika’s eyes flicked back to the screen, now seeking out Tatsumi Kazehaya’s visage. If this was someone who Nazuna said was alright, Mika was interested in learning about who he was.

Eichi: Mx'w er ekirgc jypp sj zixiverw, ws M wywtigx xlex xlivi mw e psx sj kivsrxsgvegc, hiwtmxi epviehc qeomrk wxitw xsaevhw vixmviqirx, xli zixiverw qywx fi tperrmrk sr hiqerhmrk e lmkl vixmviqirx jii.

Shu did not like Tatsumi Kazehaya. He had decided that, listening to Nazuna talk. Sure, Nazuna ‘didn’t know him well’, but there was a chance that if Tatsumi arrived here, then Nazuna might - no, it didn’t bear thinking about. Nazuna was right here in Shu’s arms, where he could safely stay.

Shu gave in to his possessive thoughts and lowered his head to rest his chin atop Nazuna’s head, delicate blond hairs now tickling at his nose.

…They needed to get a shower soon. Nazuna’s hair - and Mika’s as well - couldn’t be allowed to grow too greasy and filthy.

Nazuna was going to explode before the day was over.

Well, perhaps that was a little hyperbolic.

But really, Shu was showing him so much affection and it was just - just - Nazuna had almost thought he’d already lost this! Was he supposed to feel normally about it under these circumstances?

Hiiro: Weikywe...?

“Still, if we’re certain this is a name, it might well be good for me to write it down in my notebook,” Shu began to lean forward, then realized it would dislodge Nazuna and aborted the movement. “Kagehira, hand me my notebook and pen, would you?”

“Ya got it, Oshi-san!” Mika grabbed the notebook in question, taking note of the colors of it, the pen, and the coinpurse resting on it for the first time. “Huh. Hey, Oshi-san, we match!”

“Nito, my darling, what happened?” Shu looked quite concerned, but Nazuna just smiled and shrugged, hands placed in his lap in such a way that his arms almost made a defensive V-shape in front of his body.

Shu had wanted Nazuna to smile more, but like this? Like this it only felt fake and fragile.
