Perhaps he's wrong. Perhaps, the one he'll find companionship in isn't even human.Essentially a retelling of Nathaniel Hawthorne's tale 'The Artist of the Beautiful'. Though the fic follows the events of the original tale quite closely, having read it isn't necessary at all to understand this story.
A bunch (a whole bunch) of scenes have been added to feed the ShuMika perspective though. Enjoy. -

A dragon emerges from out of the shadows, its scales painted with a mix of a dark red and black. Pitch black horns are perched on the top of its head and its mouth is slightly open ajar, the sight of razor sharp teeth seen inside that looks like it can pierce through anything with a single bite. Its neck is long and its tail is just the same too, swishing from behind with each step. But what made Nazuna’s skin truly crawl was the immense size of the creature approaching him — it was significantly larger than him, the head nearly just as large as his own body.
Nazuna takes in a big gulp. Part of him feels anxious, shivering from head to toe…yet a part of him is also amazed – excited really, that he’s finally meeting the beast that’s become the talk of the town.
