Chapter Text
Weiss dove into the safety that was the back seat of Crescent Rose, slamming the door shut behind her. She took a deep breath in and a loud sigh out, collapsing to lay down on the seat. She was grateful Ruby sprung for an extra comfy fabric. Better to bury her face in.
“You okay, Weiss?” Ruby asked as she got into the driver’s seat and Penny into the passenger’s.
“Pmls tmk mm tm mm crm.” mumbled Weiss.
“Uh, what?”
Weiss moved her head to rest only her cheek on the side. “Please take me to my car.”
“Oh. Alright, well sit up and buckle up.” Ruby replied, starting her car and the drive back to Atlas Imports. “Sorry again about Yang tonight.” Ruby added after a minute or two of driving.
With a deep breath, Weiss leaned back, sinking into the seat. “It’s fine. I can’t say I blame her for being curious about Ilia. And it has been a while since I’ve been with someone.”
She let out another sigh. “Thanks you two for trying to keep the conversation off me as much as possible.”
“Yeah, of course.” Ruby replied, glancing in her rear view mirror at Weiss.
“While we are curious,” Penny said, turning around in her seat to look at Weiss. “You should only tell us about your… situation with Ilia when you’re ready. And whatever else you might want to talk about.”
Weiss couldn’t help but smile as Penny beamed at her. Penny always had a way of bringing ease with her smile. “Thanks, Penny.”
Weiss watched as Penny curled her lips slightly more upward, somehow exuding more warmth in her smile than she was a moment ago. Penny turned back around a moment later. “Oh Ruby, I was thinking we should try-”
Weiss let herself zone out to the sound of Penny and Ruby’s voices, watching the street lights pass and the few specks of a starting drizzle as they hit the window. It was a much needed rest for her brain after getting caught a few hours ago and the interrogation courtesy of one Yang Xiao Long that came with it. Especially about one particular topic, something she had never told anyone before.
She only realized they were back at Atlas Imports when Ruby appeared to have called her name several times. “Weiss??”
“Huh, what?” Weiss replied, startled.
“We’re back.”
“Oh, sorry.” Weiss shifted slightly in her seat. “Thanks for the ride, Ruby. Goodnight you two.”
“Goodnight!” replied Penny and Ruby in unison. Weiss, after making sure she had her things, placed her hand on the handle to Crescent Rose’s door and opened it. When her foot hit the pavement outside, she stopped.
“Maybe it’s time I get this out to someone.” She thought to herself.
She put her foot back inside the car and gently closed the door. In the very middle of the back seat she calmly got comfortable, closing her eyes and folding her hands in her lap
“Uh Weiss?” she heard Ruby ask. “Is everything okay?”
Weiss took another deep breath in and out through her nose, keeping her eyes closed. “It was Pyrrha.”
She opened her eyes just in time to catch Ruby and Penny glancing at each other. “Uhm, what was Pyrrha?” asked Ruby.
“The first girl I liked.” Weiss clarified. “It was Pyrrha…
Do you two remember when Pumpkin Pete’s was trying to push itself as a healthy breakfast option? I remember it starting when I was around 16 or so.
They ran 6 or 7 commercials of athletes and celebrities being active and eating a bowl of Pumpkin Pete’s… and one of them had Pyrrha in it. She was playing tennis, running, biking, and a couple other things, and seeing her in all those sports outfits did something for me... Made me feel all funny inside… the same way I felt when I first liked a boy when I was 11.”
She briefly paused, gathering a little courage. “I… actually have a thing for ponytails because of it.”
Her lips curled into a smile as she chuckled. “I remember being so nervous when I learned she and Jaune bought the store next to mine. I was freaking out hoping I wouldn’t just be super flustered when I met her, and while I do still think she’s very attractive, thankfully it isn’t more than a little crush that flares up here and there."
She looked between Ruby and Penny. “I just… needed to get that out. I’ve never told anyone that before. Because she’s my neighbor in the complex, I find it a little embarrassing.”
“You know Weiss,” started Ruby. “If it makes you feel any better, my first was Blake.”
Weiss’ eyes shot wide open. “What? Really?”
“Yeah, hehe.” Ruby replied, letting out a slightly nervous chuckle. “Right after Yang and her became girlfriends officially, Blake came over for the first time to have dinner with my family, and my uncle was there too. He was playfully giving her grief because she was just in jeans and a t-shirt, saying something like ‘little casual for your first dinner with your girlfriend’s family don'tcha think?’
Anyway, the next time she came over, she was in a suit to kinda play along with the joke, and when I got the door for her and saw what she was wearing I… very awkwardly and unintentionally hit on her.”
“You didn’t.”
“Yeah, I did.” Ruby said, nodding. “I literally opened the door and the second I saw her, I blurted out ‘holy cow you’re hot.’ I was all blushy and mortified the whole night and for a week or two after, but luckily she and Yang both thought it was funny.”
“Well, it is very funny.” chimed in Penny. “And fun to tease you about.” she added, playfully leaning in toward Ruby
“Don’t pretend you wouldn’t have done something similar, Miss Polendina.” smugly replied Ruby, giving her fiancé a side eye. “I remember your reaction when I showed you the pictures.”
Penny responded with a blush and a shrug, briefly looking away. “Fair.”
“So yeah, you’re not alone in that.” Ruby said with a comforting smile. “And if Yang starts on you again, don’t worry. I’ll think I know of a few ways to help you get back at her.”
“Thanks Ruby.” Weiss said with a laugh, gathering her things and exiting the car. “Goodnight you two.”
“Goodnight!” Ruby and Penny yelled as Weiss left the car, starting their drive back to the condo when they saw Weiss start her car.
"Hey Penny, I don't think you've ever told me. Who was your first girl crush?"
"Taylor McNee." answered Penny. "I really like her voice."
"Oh yeah, me too."
