“ found you “
I freeze at the sound of walter’s voice and then im being pulled up back to my feet . I groan at the pull on my arms but i cant afford to slack around right now .
Opening my eyes i look around…..only to see nyla and yoel on the ground pressed up to a wall and holding onto rhett as patton and benjamin defend them , there is walter behind me but i can only see two guys with their gun trained on patton and kane .
Kane stands off to the side ready to pounce the moment someone moves . This is a proper standoff if i have ever seen one .
“anyone of you moves and shes done” walter says bringing a knife over my neck .
I don’t feel fear this time though , all i feel is anger in my veins .
The morning sunlight grazes in through the windows and i know it’s only a matter of an hour or two . If we survive by then , it will all be fine .
“ walter this is getting old “ patton tells him and our eyes meet . His face is a mask of a poker face but i can see the tension in him the fear in his eyes . My heart warms as i realize that the fear is for me and i can see now how he cares .
“ oh come on , you should have known i would come back plus i did some digging on you” the disgust that fills me on hearing walter’s voice right in my ears pisses me off like nothing else but i don’t move .
I know how to get out of his grip and fight him but one movement from me will cause his friend to shoot and the gun is aimed at patton , i can’t afford that .
“what? “ benjamin asks and i feel walter’s chest rumble behind me in laughter .
“ i figured out that our little princess here has somehow charmed the two best friends , i should have understood it the moment they both came for your rescue “ walter speaks to me and i clench my fists .
Oh how i would love to punch him in the face .
“but you don’t really want one of them , do you ? “ walter is speaking to me but i can see the way his eyes lock with kane .
Kane doesn’t say anything as he lowers his head .
“ how about i make a deal with you kane ? “ walter says but im already opening my mouth to talk to kane . Walter doesn’t take it though as he presses the sharp edge of the knife even closer on my throat , shutting me up .
Kane looks at him and then after a split second signals for walter to go on . Patton and benjamin look at him as if hes grown two heads but kane’s eyes are fixed on walter .
“ i will give you a free fight with patton , if you kill him then i will hand deborah over to you and he would no longer be in the picture but if you fail and he wins then , well you wouldn’t be living to see what happens then anyway “ walter finishes and now im panicked as i look at kane with pleading eyes . He wouldn’t do it , surely , right ?
Kane isn’t moving or saying anything . why isn’t he disagreeing and why does he look like hes contemplating it .
“okay” kane says and i look back to see the wide sadistic smile spread on walter’s face .
“kane !! stop , don’t do this !! if you think we will ever talk if you go through this then you are wrong “ i speak but it seems to fall on deaf ears .
Kane doesn’t take time though , he throws his gun to the ground as he lunges for patton , catching him so off gaurd that patton’s gun falls away from him too .
Benjamin trains his gun on the two guys but one of walter’s friend kicks him in the stomach . I scream at kane to stop but patton and him are in a brawl now . Patton’s eyes which were wide just while ago from kane’s betrayal are now determined to get rid of him . He makes eye contact with me before hes nodding and punching kane right in the stomach .
“stop this walter” i say but walter is having too much fun watching this go down .
Now that the standoff is broken i take in a deep breath , just how your father taught you deborah , nuts nose and throat .
The moment i feel walter relaxing around me i duck my head to the side and elbow him in the ribs . He is pushed back grunting but he heals from it preety quickly as he makes a grab for me .
I don’t think twice as im ducking under his hand grab and throwing my weight on him , startling him so much in the process that his knife falls down to our feet .
We both go down together as he lands on his back with a thud .
“where did this fight come from ? “ he asks still smug , he thinks this is all i have got , well there is more to come .
I quickly find my feet before he has a chance to roll over , he follows swift and then we circle each other . I keep my steps quick , hes bigger and stronger but im more swift and if i play this smart then i can bring him down .
He grabs my wrist and i let him faking a moment of weakness but as soon as he tries pulling me in , i take the cue and punch him so hard in the face that i satisfied crack sounds in the room before fresh blood starts dripping off .
Walter roars at the surprising move and before i know it his hand comes from below to punch me in the stomach . All the breath whooshes out of me as i pant a few times trying to get some air in my lungs .
“ not so strong now , are you ? “ walter asks getting in my face but im getting myself together instantly as my hands find his shoulder and im bringing my knee up , hard .
Hes jerking back in pain and i look over at patton and kane , both their faces showing signs of cuts and bruises . Patton punches him but in the next second kane is on him , a few punches in and kane suddenly stops , i hold my breath as i try to see what exactly happened .
Before i can process it im being thrown backwards to the ground as walter settles on top of me . Shit , i shouldn’t have gotten distracted like that .
Walter doesn’t waste time as his hands wrap around my throat , squeezing tight . I start wheezing while i look everywhere in a panic .
Benjamin seems to be in trouble as he tries defending nyla and yoel , seems like he has lost his gun as walter’s friends circle him and rhett . I know if patton sees this then he would come running for me in turn making himself a target and vulnerable .
I need to do something fast . My eyes turn teary as my air supply is cut , this time walter isn’t holding back he really wants to kill me .
My eyes land on a gun a little far away and stretch towards it , trying to grab it . Just a little .
My head becomes foggy from no supply of air but my hands don’t stop as i finally get a hold of the gun . Without thinking twice im bringing it up with one hand and without any aim , i shoot .
Silence . I don’t hear a word or anything , just walter’s panting and wide eyes as he looks down . There is blood spurting out of his chest and his hold on my throat loosens as i take in big gulps of breath coughing .
Walter falls back with his hand on his chest as someone grabs me hawling me back towards them . i relax as soon as i realize it’s patton .
I look at walter and his surprised look as slowly the life in his eyes dims out . Patton buries his face in my neck breathing in and out . I sense the shaking of his hands and turn him to look at me .
Hes sees the concern in my eyes and then gives me a small smile . I look towards where he was fighting with kane to see blood pooling around the area as kane just lies in it .
“you…..” i don’t get to say anything as he starts nodding .
“i had no other choice” he rasps out and my heart constricts at the tone of his voice . He just killed his best friend .
I look away from where kane’s body is , i liked him if not as a lover but i surely did as a friend and now hes….gone . I know that nothing could have been done about it , it was either him or patton , if only he hadn’t played into walter;s words .
“ it’s okay we are okay “ i say as benjamin steps upto us .
“ 5 minutes “ he says as he helps yoel and nyla to their feet , rhett following right behind .
Walter’s friend is on the ground , not dead but immobilized as a knife sticks out from his thigh , his gun now in benjamin’s hand . The other one , well it’s safe to say he looks pretty dead to me .
Me and patton stand up as we all make our way outside the building . As soon as the fresh air hits my face , tears start flowing down .
What a damn night .
Patton pulls me close as we watch the light of morning glowing up the whole place , bodies here and there but atleast we are safe .
The static of one of the speakers breaks out and within a minute the broadcast starts .
“ this is your Emergency Broadcast System. Announcing the conclusion of the annual purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government.
Police, fire, and Emergency Medical services will now be available .
Blessed be our new founding fathers and America... A nation reborn.
May God be with you all."
I take a sigh of relief and i can feel the stress fall off from patton’s body .
“this might not be the best time to say this…“ patton starts but he doesn’t continue .
“no more of this , we have to communicate “ i tell him as he gets ahold of my chin .
“ deborah , will you be my girlfriend ? have me however you want and im all in , even officially , i want to tell the whole damn world if you will let me “ patton’s words make my breath stop .
I look in his eyes and i know , this is what soulmates are made of .
“yes” is all i say before im jumping in his arms and kissing him , he reverts back and im blissfully aware of the eyes on us .
When we pull away our group gives us a few smiles of encouragement . The night was horrific but atleast this precious little group i have is okay now .
I love them to death , quite literally .
