Chapter Text
It was around midnight and I was laying in bed when my door creaked open. Instead of getting up and seeing who it was like a normal person I pretended to be asleep.
“Hi Zara.” It was Maxine’s voice, she sounded extremely tired. It’s good to know she’s alive and most likely not injured. She walked towards me.
“Oh. You’re asleep…”
She walked off and I heard a door shut. I hadn’t actually realized what happened until now.
My old crush, who has amnesia, gave me a moonflower, my favourite flower, kissed me on my cheek and ran away.
This sounds like a romance book. A few minutes later a door opened and closed again. I assumed it was Max. She walked over and sat on the end of the bed.
“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have kissed you. I’ve only known you for two days. You could’ve had a boyfriend or a girlfriend. I know you’re asleep too so you probably won’t remember me talking. But if you do remember it, please forget what happened today.”
She sat there for a moment before getting up again. A boyfriend? Really? The girl I’ve wanted to kiss for the past two days, was apologizing for kissing me. I regret pretending to be asleep. I wanted to tell her she was wrong. I wanted to tell her how I feel. Yet I stayed in bed to see what happened next. Maxine came back over, lifting my blankets up and getting in bed next to me. Her arm wrapped around my waist. I’m sure my face was getting hotter. She pulled me closer to her before falling asleep. I fell asleep shortly after.
———
When I woke up Max was still fast asleep. It was still early in the morning but I told Alice I’d let her know when she gets back. I probably shouldn’t leave Max alone either. It’s not that I don’t trust her, it's that I want her to stay with me. To do that I would have to wake her up. Only problem is that I was squished between the wall and Maxine herself. If I tried to get up she would fall… That might actually help. I pushed her off the side of the bed and she fell to the floor.
“Why did you do that,” Max whined, rubbing her eyes and sitting up. Her eyes were a bit puffy like she was crying last night. Actually… she might’ve been. I mean that could be why she was gone for so long.
“Get dressed, we have to go see my sister.” I sighed. I honestly wanted to just go back to bed. Max glared at me.
“You’re not even standing up let alone dressed, why should I?”
“Unless you want to make a bad impression to the people who are deciding your future, get dressed.”
She pouted. “I hate you.”
“Then why did you give me that flower yesterday?”
That shut her up fast.
———
“Why are you wearing that?” Max pointed at my school uniform. It was just a white shirt, red skirt with the gold necklace and black boots. Max herself was in jeans and a sweater again. She was sitting on the window sill.
“School uniform.” I sighed. I don’t like wearing skirts all the time. I could ask Riley but I’d rather not.
“What day is it?” She asked. Her eyes looked more green under the light than normal.
“Monday. Normally school doesnt start this early but my sister wanted to see you.” I walked over to the bookshelf and started looking through it for my notebook. Maxine walked behind me and rested her head on my shoulder, holding my left hand.
“Alice, right?” She said, I nodded. We stood there silently, as I didnt want to move.
“Are you dating someone?” Maxine whispered her voice just audible. I remembered what she said last night.
“No.”
———
A few flights of stairs later we were standing outside the office. Alice had said to all of us to wait there until she got there. By all of us I mean me, Max, Riley and our mother, Keira. When we went inside Keira was sitting in a chair and Riley was behind the desk. A pretty notable difference was the new ring on Riley’s left hand. It looked a lot like an engagement ring…
“Who are you too?” Max asked.
My mom smiled, “My name’s Keira, I’m Zara, Zikai and Alice’s mother,” she pointed to the other person in the room, “That’s my older brother Riley, he’s the other founder.”
Riley sighed, Keira never introduced him as the headmaster. Zikai, my twin brother, was at Riley's boyfriend (or possible fiancé now), Antonio’s house or whatever it was.
Max smiled looking at me. “So you’re a princess?” I don’t know why I didnt expect this. My mother smiled.
“No? I’m not?” Where’s Alice? She said she would only take a minute. Max stared at me before looking at Keira.
“Can I sit down?” She asked.
“Yeah!” Max and my mother were talking about something and I went to see Riley.
“So…” He stared at me confused.
“What?” He asked.
“Who gave you that ring?”
Riley covered his hand but before he could say anything, the door opened. Alice bursted into the room late as always.
“Hi! Sorry I was late. These two kids were trying to light the chemistry lab on fire.”
“What.” Both Riley and Keira said.
“Is that not normal? I did it when I was younger. Well actually I split something and Rebecca turned the room into a freezer.” She sat down on the floor in front of Riley’s desk. Sometimes her lack of attention from our mother shows a bit too much.
———
It's actually pretty fun to be in a room with your mother, uncle, sister and a might-be-might-not-be situationship. After a while of talking about random things Riley spoke. “As well all know Maxine has amnesia. She doesn’t remember any of us. So I was going to propose the option of letting her go back to earth. Or, if she wants to, stay here at the academy. It’s her choice and no one.” He glanced at me. “Is to manipulate or influence her choice.”
Everyone looked at her waiting for a decision. I wanted Max to stay but it might be better if she went back.
“I want time to think about this.” Max said. She tried to look confident but I could tell she wasn’t. Riley and Keira glanced at each other.
“Of course! Then until you make a decision go to class with Zara as a new student. Other than that I think we should be done here. Or at least we should unless he has anything to say.” Keira smiled at her brother.
“No.”
“Well then.”
We talked for another minute or two before me, Maxine and Alice left the room.
“What happened to your arm?” Max asked. Alice looked down at it.
“You don’t need to know. Anyways, you need a uniform right?” She smiled and started walking.
