Fractured Shell, Hidden Scars

Chapter 3: The Weight of the Mask

Summary:

Here's Chapter 3 of Fractured Shell, Hidden Scars. We’re diving into Leo’s first patrol post-injury—because of course he tries to push himself too hard, and of course his brothers are not having it. Expect stubborn Leo, protective siblings, and that sweet, sweet brotherly tension.

Chapter Text

The first time Leo suited up again, it didn’t feel right.

His belt was too tight. His swords felt heavier. The familiar knot of tension in his shoulders—the one that usually grounded him—was replaced by something different.

Doubt.

“You sure about this?” Donnie asked, arms folded in the doorway to Leo’s room. He’d been hovering all evening, ever since Splinter had reluctantly cleared Leo for light patrol.

Leo adjusted his straps. “I’ve rested enough.”

“Rested,” Donnie echoed. “Not healed.”

Leo gave him a look.

Donnie sighed, already reaching for his med kit. “At least let me wrap your side again before you play hero.”

The rooftops of Manhattan felt colder than usual.

The wind bit through Leo’s bandages and made his limbs ache. But he kept moving—quiet, precise, and trying desperately not to limp when he landed from jumps.

It didn’t help that his brothers were watching him like hawks.

“You okay?” Mikey asked for the fifth time, sidling up beside him like an over-eager puppy. “Need a break? Want me to carry you?”

“I’m fine,” Leo muttered.

“You’re not fine,” Raph said behind him. “You’re sweating through your bandages.”

Leo turned. “It’s called exertion.”

“It’s called stubbornness,” Donnie corrected, scanning him with a mini thermal reader. “You’re overheating. Your vitals are spiking—Leo, you need to sit down.”

“We’re on patrol,” Leo snapped. “We can’t stop just because I’m a little tired.”

“Dude,” Mikey said, unusually serious. “This isn’t about the mission anymore. It’s about you trying to prove something.”

That hit harder than he expected.

Because it was true.

They found the muggers near Canal Street.

Three punks, armed and clumsy, trying to shake down a woman near a stairwell. Leo moved before anyone could stop him—sprinting forward, katana flashing.

His form was still perfect.

Until it wasn’t.

A swing went wide. His foot slipped. He bit back a gasp as his side flared with white-hot pain, sharp enough to buckle his knees.

He almost went down.

Then two things happened in quick succession:

Raph body-checked the last guy into a dumpster.

Donnie was at Leo’s side in an instant, gripping his arm tight enough to hurt.

“You’re done,” he said flatly.

Leo tried to shake him off. “I can finish—”

“You can’t!” Donnie’s voice cracked.

And that’s when Leo saw it—how scared they all looked.

Raph had his arms crossed so hard his biceps shook. Mikey was hovering behind Donnie, wide-eyed and silent. Donnie himself looked like he was about two seconds from collapsing, whether from frustration or heartbreak, Leo didn’t know.

“You think we’re not scared too?” Donnie said quietly. “You think we don’t notice when you grit your teeth or fake a landing? You’re not invincible, Leo. Stop pretending you are.”

Leo closed his eyes. His chest ached—not just from the injury, but from the weight of his own choices.

“…I just wanted to be strong.”

“You are,” Mikey said. “But strong doesn’t mean alone.”

They made him ride the shell-cycle home.

Well—Donnie made him. Raph threatened to duct-tape him to the seat if he tried to argue.

Back at the lair, Splinter was waiting. He said nothing as Leo limped in, supported by both Donnie and Mikey. Just looked at him with eyes that understood too much.

Leo avoided his gaze.

But that night, as he lay on his futon—pain dulled by meds, pride bruised in a different way—he stared up at the ceiling and whispered, “I’m scared too.”

He didn’t think anyone heard.

But Mikey, curled up in the hammock nearby, murmured, “That’s okay, bro.”

And Leo finally let himself believe it.

To Be Continued...

Notes:

Next chapter idea: Leo in full recovery mode, maybe forced to take a full-on rest week (torture), bonding time with each brother as they literally force him to slow down. Think Mikey’s goofy movie nights, Donnie’s “you’re not touching a weapon, let’s build something” plan, and Raph dragging him into emotionally stunted heart-to-hearts in the dojo. Want me to go there next? 😏

Notes:

If you'd like a part two—maybe showing Leo's recovery and how each brother helps him in their own way—I’d love to continue it. Want to expand it into a longer fic? Maybe even some fluffy moments or confessions about how much he means to them? 👀
