Chapter Text
Alice stood at the top of the stairs looking down at the people ready to leave the ship for the day. Her eyes scanning the crowd for one person and one person only.
"So," Alice nearly jumped at the familiar voice – but it wasn't the voice she wanted. It was Amy, the cruise ship's nurse. "I listened to Timeless Heartbeat last night."
"Okay," Alice said, not sure where her friend was going as she turned to her. "I have been singing that since I got here. You should know it well, by now."
"Yeah, but I never truly listened to it before. There is a lot of focus on time in it: Echoes of time, through seasons and years, past and sighs… time may bend," Amy said, aimlessly quoting lyrics from Alice's song.
"I don't see where you are going here," Alice pointed out.
"Is it possible the focus on time is about an age difference?" Amy asked, and Alice saw where Amy was going. "Like, maybe, about that guy who said he kept on listening to it yesterday. The one who calls you Alice."
"You do realize Alice is my real name?" Alice said to that. "Ali is just a nickname I use for the stage."
"Not the point," Amy said. "What was his name? Your mother's friend…? Nick. That's the one. Timeless Heartbeat and Nick."
"Are you asking me if Timeless Heartbeat is about Nick…" Alice said trying to deflect the question.
"It is, isn't it?" Amy asked, and Alice didn't know what to say about that. "Ali, he's old enough to be your father and this song is something you have been singing since long before you got here. How old were you?"
"Nothing illegal ever happened between us," Alice said, wanting to make that clear.
Before Amy could question it further, Alice smiled as Nick appeared besides her.
"You ready?" Nick asked. He looked good; definitely better groomed and dressed than he had been when Alice first saw him – he had looked like a wreck then – but he reminded Alice now of the boy she knew, a smile on his face and the most attractive aroma, too.
"Definitely," Alice said, taking his outstretched arm and noticing the look on Amy's face. "See you later Amy."
With that, Nick and Alice walked off the ship and away from the crowd.
"Want to tell me what that was about?" Nick asked once their feet were on solid land.
"Amy has pieced together Timeless Heartbeat is about you," Alice said, and saw Nick's confusion and then understanding. "She is thinking we did something inappropriate while I was underage."
"Well, we never did… even when we were the same age," Nick mused.
"I know," Alice said as the two continued to walk, "and there is nothing inappropriate about this now. Don't worry, I can handle Amy. Let's just have some fun. Ever been here before?"
"To the Bahamas, yes. This particular town, no," Nick said. "You?"
"Yes," Alice said. "The company has a deal with a resort here so guests from our cruise can use their beach and activities – we're only here for a day, after all." Nick nodded, having seen that in the brochure. "So, it's a bit of a regular stop on the Caribbean cruises. The town has some nice shopping too and great places to eat."
"Well, let's explore," Nick said, the two moving into the shopping areas.
Alice didn't remember ever having so much fun in this town before. Nick might be a grown up, but he could act younger than her as they explored the shops in the town; Alice laughing as he joked with certain things like a coconut bra in one of the shops. She smiled as Nick bought a pink flower and put it in her hair.
By lunch they found themselves at an outdoor bar by the ocean, the two managing to snatch a table overlooking the water before anyone else could.
"Order at the bar," Alice said, pointing at the bar, knowing that was how it worked here. She had eaten here before, after all.
"Give me the order. I'll ordered and bring it back," Nick said.
"Cracked conch," Alice said. "And a Bahama Mama."
"On it," Nick said, getting up and moving into the bar area to try to get the order in. There was a crowd of people he was trying to bypass so Alice knew it could be a while.
As he, left Alice's phone started to ring and Alice took it, seeing it was a video call from her mom. She answered it with a smile.
"Hey mom," Alice said. "How's the book tour going?"
"Thankfully, I'm done," Kat said on the screen. "Just got home this morning. Love meeting the fans, but I miss my babies," Kat turned the camera around for Alice to see TJ and CC who were playing with toys. "Boys, say hi to your sister."
"Sissy!" The two yelled together, throwing one of the toys in the air and Alice laughed.
"Hi there," Alice said to the two, who made more calls of 'sissy'.
"Hello, Alice," this was Thomas, and Kat turned the camera to the man, who had come into the room and waved at the phone. Thomas was still a bit awkward around technology, so sometimes seemed unsure on video chats – he was getting better as the years passed, though, with the help of Kat and Jacob.
"Hello Thomas," Alice said, and after that Kat turned the camera back to her.
"And by miss my babies, I do mean all three. The season is almost over for the ship, right?" Kat asked.
"This is our last cruise," Alice confirmed.
"So, are you coming home to Port Haven or going to visit your father and Rachel first?" Kat asked, and Alice ignored the face at the thought of Alice visiting Braden and Rachel first.
"I'm coming home," Alice confirmed. "Honestly, I don't even want to go visit dad. Last time I was there he kept on harping on about going to college and how I can start a five-year plan now. Didn't even stop him when I pointed out I was still in contract with the ship. Plus, somehow, they make me babysit more than you and Thomas do. I mean I love my little sister and brother there but babysitting every night." Alice took a moment there. "Besides, you had Jacob and Thomas make me that studio and I need to think about recording for my next album."
"So, I have you soon," Kat said with a smile.
"Yes," Alice said smiling back.
"Good, I don't get to see you enough. I know you are out there living the dream, but I miss you while you are off exploring the world," Kat said.
"Well, maybe next season you can come on board?" Alice said. "In fact, I got a look at plans for next year and there is going to be a week cruise where we are bringing aboard authors and their books. A sort of book week. I submitted Port Haven Chronicles as an idea. If the higher ups like it, you, Thomas, and the boys could come on board for free."
"Love it," Kat said with a smile. "And I can't spread this too far, but I have a movie deal in the works. We're just dotting the I's and crossing the Ts. Should be announced soon, so might give me a bump up."
"Whoa! That is amazing, mom," Alice said, surprised, but so happy her mother had made it as a writer.
"For both me and you. I have put a clause in for them to use some of your music. The movie producers love the fact you have recorded Port Haven folk songs of the time and several others of your songs. I think Timeless Heartbeat was mentioned to be used," Kat said.
Alice gave a giggle at that; the song definitely popular this week. She moved a piece of hair out of her face, adjusting the flower on her hair. "Nice flower. You know, you look really good. All dolled up. Flower in your hair. Is that some make-up I see?" Alice made a noise, not sure how to answer. "And that's not the ship. Where are you?"
"Bahamas, we came into port today," Alice said.
"Are you with someone?" Kat asked. "Oh, am I interrupting a date…?"
Alice wasn't sure how to answer that, considering Kat was, but Alice didn't want to tell her mom with who at the moment. Unfortunately for her, Nick came back with her drink in his hand and a beer for himself.
"Bahama Mama, my lady," Nick said, "and they said they will bring the food out," he added, putting a number on the table so the server would know where to bring the food.
"That voice sounds familiar," Kat said, and Nick face paled at it.
"Nick, say hi to mom," Alice sighed, turning the phone around, so Nick was in the frame.
"Um… Hey Kat," Nick said, putting a smile on his face. "Long time no see."
"Nick!" Kat said, and Nick saw the look on her face; she was piecing things together. "What are you doing there?"
"He's on the cruise, mom," Alice said.
"Oh, with your wife?" Kat asked.
"Divorced," Nick said.
"Your moms said you were having a baby?" Kat added.
"She is – with her affair partner," Nick said. It still stung talking about it, but Alice put a hand on his shoulder and that made him feel better.
"Damn. I'm sorry," Kat said. "You didn't deserve that," Nick could see Kat really meant the words.
"Maybe for the best," Nick said, his eyes turning to Alice who looked back at him. It took a second for Nick to remember they were sharing a look in front of Alice's mom. "But I heard you are a published author now, have a husband, and two sons? Congrats!"
"Thanks," Kat said, having had clearly noticed the look between the two of them.
"Well, mom I should get going. Talk to you later. Bye Thomas, TJ, CC! Send Grandma and Jacob my love, and I am looking forward to seeing them soon," Alice said wanting to end this conversation now and pushed the end button before Kat could say anymore.
After the screen went blank, it took a moment for Alice and Nick to laugh.
"Your mom is going to kill me," Nick said to her.
"Oh, don't worry, I can handle her," Alice said, taking Nick's hand and intertwining their fingers. "Besides, we haven't done anything yet for her to kill you for."
"Yet?" Nick asked, focusing on that word. "Have I proven myself?"
Alice didn't answer but leaned over and kissed Nick, who returned the kiss. When they broke apart Alice looked at Nick. "I've had more fun with you today than I have had in a long time," Alice admitted. "I want to be with you, Nick, so I am choosing to trust you that you are ready for this to be real. I'm putting my heart on the line. Please, don't crush it."
"Never," Nick said, moving in to kiss Alice again, and Alice accepted the kiss.
They didn't break apart until they heard someone coughing near them; Alice turning to see Amy there with several other of the ship crew.
"So, nothing happened between you two?" Amy asked.
"I said nothing illegal happened between the two of us," Alice corrected.
"Not important," one of the men with Amy said. "Ali, we're celebrating this being Jonas's last journey." The man put a hand on the back of someone Nick assumed was this Jonas. "Do you and your…?"
"Boyfriend, Nick," Alice said and Nick had to smile at being called her boyfriend. It was something he was never really called before – even with Claire.
"Boyfriend then. Do you want to join?" the first man said.
"Not right now," Alice said. "But I'll celebrate Jonas later. Congratulation on the promotion."
"Thanks, Ali," Jonas said. "We'll leave you two alone..." the group moved away, dragging Amy with them who was giving them looks just as Alice and Nick's food came out.
"So, what did this Jonas do?" Nick asked.
"He was our event coordinator on the ship, but he's taken a job at the main headquarters to help schedule cruises and events on all the ships," Alice said. "Less traveling, more money. Something he has wanted for a while from what I gather."
"Event coordinator…" Nick mumbled. "Know if they have a replacement?"
"They should be interviewing during the off-season," Alice said. "Why?"
"It's basically what I used to do on the yachts, and I have missed being on the water. Maybe I can submit my resume? We'd get to spend more time together if I worked on the ship," Nick said.
"I'll give to the captain myself," Alice said, giving a small smile as the two started to eat.
"What was that about seeing Kat soon?" Nick finally asked, halfway through his food.
"You know this is the last cruise of the season, right?" Alice asked and Nick frowned, but then gave a nod. It seemed he had forgotten how late it was – it was hard to know the winter was coming when on a luxury cruise, not to mention where they were presently. "Afterward, I have a few months off until the next season starts. I am heading home to Port Haven."
"Been a long time since I have been back. Maybe I should head out to see my moms? I don't really have any thing or anywhere to get back to. We could travel back together?" Nick said.
"Love to Nick, but we drop the guests off at the last port and then the crew has to go with the ship to its home port where it will spend the off season getting cleaned and any work done it needs," Alice said, and Nick gave a frown. "I could ask if you can remain on board as my guest though. It's not unheard of."
"I'd like that," Nick said the two continuing their eating and talking.
Afterward the two spent some more time in the town before Alice had to head back to the ship. "So, why back at this time?"
"All crew needs back on board before dinner," Alice said. "But I don't have a performance until tomorrow morning. Back at sea tomorrow, after all."
As they entered the ship Nick kissed Alice. "Nick," Alice said after the kiss. "I want us to try, but I don't want to take you back to my room yet or go to your room."
"Got it – slow," Nick said, giving Alice a nod and a smile she returned as they moved through the ship.
-The Way Home-
The rest of the week was the best cruise Alice could remember; having Nick around just made things brighter. He was at all her performances, cheering her on. She had to start ignoring him requesting Timeless Heartbeat or she would have played it every day. At first, her friends on the ship seemed weirded out by her relationship with this older man, but all of them – even Amy – started accepting it after a day or two. Every free moment Alice had she spent with Nick, so Nick spent a lot of time with the rest of the crew, and he fitted in well with the group. It helped with his history, working on boats.
It was towards the end of the cruise that Alice finally brought Nick back to her cabin after dinner, allowing things to happen she had wanted to happen for a long time. Afterward, she laid on Nick, nearly asleep when she was woken up by him moving.
"Alice, you're bleeding!" Nick said, and Alice looked down realizing Nick was right. "Is… did I hurt you?" He seemed so confused it made Alice smile at how sweet he was as he said it.
"Nick, girls sometimes bleed after their first time," Alice said to Nick, getting up and going to her bathroom to clean herself off and put on some pajamas – she was thankful any bleeding seemed to have stopped already. When she went back into the room, she saw Nick sitting at the end of the bed, seeming stunned. He had put on some boxers but that was it. "Nick…?"
"You… you were a virgin?" Nick asked
"Yes," Alice admitted. "Does that scare you off?"
"No, no, just… I don't think I ever slept with a virgin before," Nick said opening up his arms and Alice went to sit on his lap. "I'm your first and if I have my way, your only." Alice giggled as Nick kissed her neck. "Although… I am picturing all the ways Kat is going to kill me."
"Stop bringing my mom into the conversation," Alice said, and Nick had to agree. He had to stop thinking about how Kat would react to all this and just go with it – he had never been happier than this week. "Help me take the sheets off the bed. I think I have an extra set in the closet, actually." Nick gave a nod and helped Alice change the bed, Alice leaving the old sheets on the floor, saying the ship maid would take them.
"You have a must nicer cabin than mine," Nick said.
"Crew cabins. They give us a nice room. You might have your own soon," Alice said with a wink. She had passed off his resume along with a list of references.
"What's all this?" Nick said, his hand passing over Alice's guitar as he went to a desk in the room. There were a lot of papers on the desk.
Alice jumped up, taking one of the papers and putting it in a folder. "Just some of my newest originals… I just finished the last one for my new album," Alice said.
"Play one for me?" Nick asked.
"Maybe, later," Alice said. "Come on, back to bed." Nick was curious why Alice didn't want to play the song right now but didn't want to pry as he went to take the spot next to her in the bed.
-The Way Home-
The next day was their last day at sea. The day after, they would be arriving at the last port and dropping off the guests. Alice was doing what was meant to be her last performance in the lounge, with Nick sitting in what was now is normal spot, listening to her.
After she was done, she went and sat on Nick's lap giving him a kiss.
"Ali?" It was the captain of the ship, who Nick learned was Captain Morgan. He had a couple of meetings with the man over the job opportunity already. "I need you to perform tonight on the main stage."
"I thought you had some major magician for the last performance?" Alice said. Alice and the band were permanent members of the crew; the rest of the entertainment were weekly contracts for one cruise. They changed with each one.
"He and the band went on a hike yesterday on our last stop," the captain said clearly annoyed, "and got into a bad accident."
"Are they okay?" Alice asked.
"Only one of the members of the band has no broken bones and my magician is hospitalized, which I wasn't informed about until this morning," Captain Morgan said, clearly even more annoyed by that fact. "None of the other weekly performers will take over without wanting a ton extra on their contract. So, I need you and your guitar."
"You're the boss," Alice said, knowing she had no choice.
"Good," Captain said. "Oh, and Nick, I know you are staying on board afterward as Ali's guest, which is a good thing, so you can come into headquarters and fill out the paperwork when we're there? Congratulations, you got the job."
"Oh wow! Thank you," Nick said, holding out his hand and shaking it.
"Well, we contacted your references and they sung your praise. Several of them indicated if you were on board they would be buying a room and you worked for some well off people in the past," Captain Morgan said. "Give them a call and let them know you have the job."
"Will do, Captain," Nick said, giving a salute and the captain gave a nod, turning away. "I got the job," he said to Alice.
"You got the job," Alice smirked, giving him a kiss. "And I got to prepare for tonight now. Main stage on my own… I've never done it without the band, and it's a bigger job then my sets here at the lounge."
"Want me to come and help?" Nick asked.
"No. You enjoy the day," Alice said, kissing him again and then took her guitar and moved off. Nick frowned. He would have preferred to be with Alice; whenever they were away from each other he found himself longing to be with her again. He shrugged and figured he could go hang out by the pool until dinner that night.
-The Way Home-
At dinner, Nick was once again completely focused on Alice and her music. He loved the fact it was just her and her guitar up there. She had played Colton and her own originals, normal songs everyone would know, and Nick smiled at the Port Haven Folk Songs she sang.
"Well, we're up to my last song of the night," Alice said, and Nick frowned, but knew that dinner was almost over. "I know this wasn't the show you were promised, but I hope you all enjoyed, regardless. Now, for this last song, it's a song I have never played for anyone before. I actually started writing it this week and finished it completely earlier. I call it, 'The Way Back to You'."
Alice started to play and then soon started to sing: "In the quiet moments, when the world slows down. I see your smile, and my heart spins around. Like a compass finding north, my soul knows the way. Back to you, my love, where I'm meant to stay."
Nick stood up and noticed the eyes on him; he knew the song was about him and everyone on board knew it too. He knew they were the biggest gossip on the ship. "We're writing a new chapter in our love storyline. A chance to rewrite the past and make it shine. With every breath, I'll find my way to you. In your eyes, my heart beats true."
Nick walked towards the stage as Alice sang; now he needed to get closer to her. "Time and space, they can't erase. The love we shared, the memories we made. In the present, we're finding our way. To a love that's stronger, every single day." Alice sang as Nick got to the bottom of the stage. "We're writing a new chapter, in our love story line. A chance to rewrite the past and make it shine. With every breath, I'll find my way to you. In your eyes, my heart beats true."
Alice's head turned to look at Nick and she sang the part directly to him. "We'll dance under the stars, with our hearts beating fast. Our love will shine like a beacon, in darkness past. We'll cherish every moment, and make new memories too. Forever and always my love, I'll be loving you." Alice sang and then went into chorus one last time: "We're writing a new chapter, in our love story line. A chance to rewrite the past, and make it shine. With every breath, I'll find my way to you. In your eyes, my heart beats true."
As Alice finished the song Nick jumped onto the stage and before she could even put the guitar down Nick had kissed her passionately. She returned the kiss as the ship clapped for the end of the song.
"Marry me," Nick said once he separated from her.
"What?" Alice asked.
"Marry me," Nick said.
"Are you serious?" Alice asked, seeming surprised. The crew and guests seemed too shocked themselves to say anything, his words heard over her microphone. Alice knew most of them thought this relationship was just a phase for them – they didn't know the truth behind the two, after all.
"My only regret is I don't have a ring," Nick said and noticed as Alice took off a necklace she wore.
"How's this one?" Alice said, taking the ring off the necklace.
"Perfect," Nick said taking the ring and getting down on one knee. "Alice Landry, will you marry me?"
"Yes!" Alice said, almost not believing this whirlwind romance, but also not ever wanting to be separated from Nick ever again. She let Nick put the ring on her finger before he went and kissed her again. There was applause which they ignored from those in the room at the engagement.
"….why were you wearing an engagement ring around your neck?" Nick finally asked after the kiss was over.
"My parents gave it to me after their divorce," Alice said.
"That was Kat's ring?" Nick asked, and Alice nodded. "She really will kill me…" Alice gave a laugh as Captain Morgan finally came onto the stage.
"Well, a hand for the happy couple," he said, indicating for everyone to clap again. "And an amazing performance from our own Ali Landry," Alice took a bow and then took Nick's arm, indicating for him to follow her off the stage as the captain made his end of the week speech.
Alice put her head on Nick's shoulder.
"Let's never part again," she said.
"Never," Nick said, putting an arm around Alice, knowing in a moment Alice would have to walk around the hall to talk to the other guests, but he could take a moment with his fiancée.
-The Way Home-
In Port Haven, Kat grabbed TJ out of the small bit of snow on the ground, while Thomas had CC. The two had made their way over to Landry Farm where Jacob was standing out front. Del and her husband, she could see, were making their way over, too.
"How's Julie?" Kat asked of Jacob's wife.
"Being on bedrest is driving her crazy," Jacob said. "Now, is Alice staying here or with you? You know we transformed my old room into the nursery, so her room is still set up for her."
"She's my daughter. She's staying with me," Kat said.
"She can always stay with us," Del said. "We have no one pregnant and no little kids. A bit calmer. And more room."
"She's staying with us," Kat said, more reassured.
"Whatever you want," Thomas said, giving a smile as he held his son.
"Kat?" Kat was surprised when she saw Elliot coming up.
"Elliot, welcome back to town," Kat said. She stayed in contact with Elliot but hadn't seen him in a while. "Where is your daughter?"
"Emma has her," Ellot said. "Um… Nick asked me to come back to town and meet him here. Is that who you all are waiting for?"
"No, Alice," Kat said.
"Wasn't Nick the man with Alice during the video chat?" Thomas asked.
"Yes," Kat said; she had been suspicious of the two since then, and Alice hadn't given a straight answer in text form. "Did you know his wife cheated on him and is having a baby with her affair partner? They are divorced."
"I didn't," Elliot said, shaking his head. "You don't think…?"
"They were together…. he was on her ship," Kat said, the two sharing a look, but didn't have time to say anymore as a taxi came onto the farm.
The back door opened and Nick came out and held out a hand, which was taken by Alice who he helped out of the car. The taxi driver had opened the trunk and helped Nick take the luggage out – there was quite a lot of it since it was both Alice and Nick's. Nick taking out money and paying the driver who quickly left.
Alice took Nick's arm as they approached the waiting group.
"Sissy!" TJ said as Kat had put him down and the toddler ran to his sister. CC, who Thomas still had, kicked his feet, wanting to follow his brother so Thomas put him down so the two boys went over to their sister.
"Hi there," Alice said, dropping Nick's arm and going to hug both boys.
"Alice," Kat said, coming over and giving her daughter a hug. "Nick, you two came back together?"
"Yes," Nick said, giving Kat a nervous smile as Alice went to greet her entire family. "Elliot," Nick held out a hand which Elliot took. "Thanks for coming. Alice."
"Oh, yes, um.. mom… me and Nick…" Alice said, coming back up and hugging Nick's arm, "…are engaged." Alice showed off her hand to show the engagement ring and she noticed the looks of shocked.
"Oh, well, welcome to the family," Thomas said, almost right away, seeming to be the only one not shocked as he came up to pat Nick's shoulder.
"Thomas!" Kat hissed and Thomas looked back at Kat, clearly not understanding the reaction of his wife.
"In our time it was normal for someone of Nick's age, with no children, to look for a wife of Alice's age – and females of Alice's age would prefer older husbands who could care for them," Jacob explained for Thomas. "Not normal now, but if this is Alice's choice I agree with Thomas. Welcome to the family."
"Um, yes," Del said with a nod seeming stunned herself; her husband nodded along with his wife.
"You two are serious?" Kat asked. "And is that my engagement ring!"
"Um…" Nick said.
"Mine now," Alice said and Kat frowned. "Mom, you set us up, technically."
"I was 15 and setting up two friends. Not my daughter with someone who could be her father!" Kat complained.
"Mom, please try to understand. He's my soulmate. Maybe something the pond tried to tell me more than once," Alice said. "I need you to be happy for me. Because dad definitely wasn't when I told him over video chat. He refuses to come here for the wedding. I honestly think he's disowned me at this point, focusing on making sure his new daughter doesn't make the mistakes I did. I want you to be there and be happy for me. I want you to be my Maid of Honor."
Kat put a hand on Alice's face, looking at her daughter and knowing how serious she was. She sighed.
"Of course I will be," Kat said, bringing her daughter into a hug. "I might not like this, but it is your life. I'll support it… and kill Nick in the 1800s if I need to at some point."
Nick gave a nervous laugh at that. "Elliot, be my best man?" Nick said as Elliot stood there, seeming to be stunned.
"Um… sure, but you know I will help Kat if needed," Elliot said, shocked himself and Nick sighed, having known Elliot would.
"Thomas, will you give me away?" Alice asked, turning to her stepfather.
"I'd be honored," Thomas said, giving a bow at that as he had taken the two little boys.
"And I got two ring bearers right there," Alice said.
"Sissy," the two yelled making the group laugh.
"And Elliot will your daughter be flower girl?" Alice asked.
"I'll have to run it by Emma, but I don't see why not," Elliot said.
"I guess we have a wedding to plan," Kat said, surrendering to the idea that Nick was about to be her son-in-law.
"And I got to figure out how to tell my moms I am marrying a 23-year-old without mentioning time travel," Nick said.
"Just tell them with Alice there is still a possibly of grandkids in their future," Del smirked, and Nick snaped his finger pointing at Del.
"Good idea!" Nick said, giving a nod and kissing Alice, ignoring the looks. "Be back soon. I'm going to go give the venue our down payment and see Moncia about catering before telling my moms."
"Be back fast," Alice said as Nick and Elliot went off to chat.
"Seriously, Alice?" Kat had to ask once they were gone. "Seriously?"
"I know it's fast, but… he's the one. I mean Thomas is technically 200 years older than you," Alice said.
"She is right," Thomas said, and Jacob gave a laugh at that, giving the boys to Kat and Del. "Jacob, help me with Alice and Nick's luggage," Jacob nodded, going to get the suitcases.
"So, where are me and Nick staying?" Alice asked.
