Chapter Text

Via della Scala, Florence
The taxi pulled away, and silence settled. Not the absence of sound, but the kind which comes from being somewhere very old and very much vibrating with life past and present.
Golden light emanated from the streetlights, bathing the narrow, cobbled street in it’s glow. Underfoot, stones radiated light like warmed honey, touched by the late summer evening. The buildings rose close together, their plaster and centenarian brick walls softened with age, washed with amber tones. Window shutters remained lazily thrown open to the night air, thin tulle curtains drifting lazily upon unseen breezes. Flower boxes erupting with green, spilling over sills and balconies; herbs, jasmine, something faintly citrus.

John stood still and just breathed.

The air retained an aroma of warm stone, basil crushed between fingertips, woodsmoke from a kitchen somewhere nearby. It was the kind of air which you could taste. The kind that told you the day had been hot, and night was only here to soothe. Sherlock’s gaze moved up the side of the building before them - three floors, pale stone, tall windows framed in chipped ivory wood. A narrow balcony stretched anterior to the outside door, delicate rails curving in intricate, elegant wrought patterns. From here they would see the street beneath them, people talking, living, laughing.

“It’s very… yellow,” John said quietly, though “yellow” felt like the wrong word. It was warmer than yellow, deeper.
Sherlock nodded once. “Sodium vapour lighting. Replaced in most cities. Preserved here, sensible. It’s kinder to the eye.”
John almost smiled. “Yeah, kinder.”

Eventually, they changed, unpacking what little they had brought. They changed for the evening. John rolled his sleeves halfway without thinking; the fabric felt softer here somehow. The back of his neck cooled as he splashed water over his face. The mirror reflected tiredness, yes - yet also something loosened. Something breathing again.
Sherlock reappeared in a light linen shirt, the top button undone. The fabric didn’t cling to him; it moved when the breeze reached him, as if he were part of it. His curls had begun to soften in the humidity.
No words exchanged, no planning. They simply stepped outside.

The street welcomed them with warmth still lingering within the stones from the afternoon. Lanterns hung between buildings like captured stars, like fireflies dancing within their confines. Their footsteps kept a slow rhythm on the cobblestones.
They chose the restaurant because it looked as though it had always been there, surviving through the metamorphosis of time and the city. Small tables. Iron chairs. A chalkboard menu written in quick hand, curving elegantly - organic. The hanging lights above swayed gently within the cool breeze, brushing a soft glow over the tables which approached and retreated like waves.

They sat.

The chairs creaked. A waiter brought bread without asking, setting it down with olive oil already poured into a shallow dish. Oil gleaming greenish gold beneath the rich honeyed lamplight.

John tore off a piece of bread.. sourdough? Steam slipped out, almost like sap spilling from the crevices of a tree. The first bite was warm, real, sun and flour and salt and time. He closed his eyes briefly, just enough to let it settle.
Sherlock watched, not intensely. Not analysing, just… present.

Pasta arrived - one dish the colour of perfectly ripe tomatoes, the other pale and fragrant with lemon and basil. Plates clinking softly against the tablecloth. John twirled a forkful. Ate. A breath left his chest that had been hiding there for weeks.

And then, after half the meal had passed in a silence that felt companionable instead of empty, Sherlock reached into his pocket, slow, unhurried, and drew out a cigarette. Slim, evidently a different brand to his usual - courtesy of the airport’s duty free.
John raised a brow. “I didn’t know you still smoked.”
“I’m on holiday,” Sherlock murmured, and lit it anyways.
The smoke rose, curling delicately, catching the glow of the string lights, warm against his face. Pale ribbons dissolved into the golden light like it had always been there. He didn’t look grand or dramatic or dangerous, He looked human.

The people around them were laughing softly, not loudly. Someone toasted at a nearby table, glasses ringing gently. A child ran by with a small dog in tow, paws clicking against the stones. Sherlock tapped ash into the small metal tray. The gesture was light, absent-minded.
John’s voice came low, without warning, “She would’ve liked this place.”
Sherlock didn’t look startled. He didn’t turn sympathetic. He just angled his head, cigarette between two fingers, gaze steady.
“Yes,” Sherlock said. Simple, completely certain. “She would have taken the seat with the best view and made us trade if we didn’t choose correctly.”
A breath of a laugh escaped John, small, but real. It tugged something in his chest loose, gently. “She would’ve complained about the bread being too hard, then eaten all of it.”
Sherlock’s mouth curved. Not quite a smile, but warm. “And stolen mine.”
They didn’t mourn out loud. They didn’t name the ache. They just let her be here. Sherlock flicked the last of the ash. Let the smoke drift upward.
John didn’t thank him this time.
Sherlock didn’t look at him, He didn’t have to. The city glowed around them, slow and golden, and the night held them in its quiet hands. For now, that was enough.
