Instinctively, Mary reaches out to grab Phoebe’s hand, hindered by the towel wrapped around her girl’s shoulders. It’s only a brief moment before Phoebe wiggles her arm out to allow her hand to be taken and given a squeeze.
“Take your time, bee,” Mary insists, lifting their hands to press a kiss to the back of Phoebe’s. “Whatever it is, it’s okay. I promise.”
Phoebe sighs then, lip worried between her teeth once more. “I was just wondering about that scar. Not the long one, I know that one’s from me being born. Your C-section scar. But the other one above it.”
Oh.
Phoebe finally asks Mary about her scar from that fateful day on The Andalucia.

Summary
Sometimes, John finds that he’s frustrated with himself for struggling so terribly with it all. It’s not as if they’d known each other for very long in the grand scheme of things. Why is it weighing so heavily on him? Why can’t he just move on? Does he even have the right to mourn? To grieve?
John is allowed two days of isolation before his mum intervenes.
A bit more than half a year on, John still struggles with Mary’s death.

Summary
Questions about Mary have become more and more frequent of late.
They’ve told her the truth as neutrally as possible, just the bare bones of it all: Mary had a very complicated life and was made to do very difficult things to survive but she absolutely adored Rosie and was so proud to be her mum. Sherlock has even explained the shooting to her, although John hadn’t been privy to that conversation. Since then, the questions have evolved into far more personal ones, obscure ones, about all sorts of things.
Rosie wants to know more about her mum.

Summary
“What happened? Are you alright?” Sherlock asks quickly, kneeling next to her so he can give her a once over.
“Kitty, Papa,” Rosamund repeats insistently, lifting her hands up for him to see.
Upon closer inspection, Sherlock realises that the orange bundle in her hands is a kitten. A tiny little thing, it can’t be more than a month old at the very most.
“Where on Earth did you find it?” Sherlock asks, still slightly breathless from the panic that had overtaken him at the sound of her yells.
“Under the slide,” Rosamund answers, pointing to a vacant patch of sand just behind the column in the centre of the slide’s twist. “He’s all alone, Papa. We have to bring him home.”
Sherlock and Rosie spend an afternoon at the playground.

“Sorry, how do you know Archie? Are we neighbours?”
It’s the girls’ turn to look confused.
“Uh… no?” The shorter one replies, brows knit together. “He’s, like… famous. Don’t you run his Instagram?”
Not one single word in that sentence makes sense to John. He looks up to Sherlock once again, grateful but concerned to see he also has no clue what’s going on here.
“His… Instagram,” John clarifies, gesturing to the bulldog currently slobbering all over the taller girl’s hands. “You’re saying my dog’s got a famous Instagram.”
John and Sherlock make a discovery at the park.
