Chapter Text

Three months ago

The wedding was a small, intimate event.

A couple rows of white pews had been set up on the side of the Kent farmhouse. It was early fall, early enough that the Kansas sun still shone through the few clouds that sprinkled the sky, but late enough that the leaves had started to make the turn from vibrant green to a muted orange. Although it wasn’t too late in the day, the sun had already started to make its descent in the sky, the faint oranges and pinks promising a beautiful sunset later.

The few lines of benches held only the couple’s closest friends and family. On Clark's side, Lois, Jimmy, Martha, and Kon sat seated, all dressed in nice clothes. Bruce's side held Alfred, and his small cluster of children—Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian, and Cass. dick and Jason slyly whispering things to each other and tim and on speaking through intense eye contact across the rows.

The other members of the wedding party all sat quietly, but everyone looked completely overjoyed and at peace. They had all put in a lot of work to make this wedding perfect, and they all wanted to see it through for the happy couple.

Finally, Bruce and Clark began to make their way towards the isle, hand in hand. Everyone turned and stopped their conversation to simply watch as they made their slow trek to the front.

The thoughts of all of their closest friends and family members all gathered in one place filled Bruce with some sort of warmth and pride. It was so rare these days to see them gathered together. Jason and dick were almost never home, and the others were always off at school or being superheroes. Bruce knew Clark felt the same way, not just with Bruce's kids, but also with his man, who he saw so rarely these days.

Even with everyone here, Bruce found it impossible to give his attention to anyone but Clark. Clark with his curly black hair, slicked back, but not as much as his superman look that Bruce always wanted to run his fingers through and mess up. Clark with his megawatt smile that today was directed only at him. Clark with his golden-brown skin that practically radiated with the sunlight that supplied his powers. Clark with his white tux that contrasted with Bruce's black one, and both with matching white roses nestled in the lapel. Clark with his eyes so bright they were almost turquoise, fastened so directly on Bruce it was like he was seeing through him. clark, clark, clark.

His heart beat with the rhythm.

Clark, Clark, Clark.

How could he focus on anything else when he had this perfect man walking beside him, hand clasped in his own, eyes shining with unshed tears of joy.

To Bruce, their relationship had been doomed from the start. Bruce was a playboy to Clark’s perfect old-fashioned manners, even though both were more of an act than the real thing. Clark was also a good five years younger than Bruce, which wasn’t much, but sometimes it felt like a lifetime. Bruce didn’t see Clark ever liking him enough to actually commit to this forever.

But miraculously, when Bruce proposed a year ago, Clark had said yes.

They both wanted to have a small wedding, preferably as soon as possible, but life got in the way and it kept getting pushed back, so much so that Bruce thought it would never happen. But here they were, walking down an aisle to say their vows and commit themselves to forever.

And forever was a long time, but to Bruce, it felt like not long enough. Still, he would take as much time as he could get for the love of his life.

Bruce pulled himself from his thoughts and vaguely recognised dick pulling white rose petals from his pockets and throwing them in front of him and Clark as they walked.

Before he knew it he was standing beneath an arch woven with white roses and twinkling lights. Diana, who was the only other league member invited to be there, had gotten legally ordained just so she could officiate their wedding. She stood there grinning at their joined hands, and began speaking.

Bruce barely registered her words and Tim’s slight camera shutters as he captured the event, all he could see was clark. he spoke when he was supposed to (mostly, their was one moment where he got a little too lost in clark’s eyes and only snapped out of it when diana let out a good natured laugh and gave Bruce a little nudge on the shoulder), but still everything else around him seemed to fade into one big blur.

Finally he heard the words, “I now pronounce you husbands, you may now kiss!” from Diana.

And then Clark’s hands were grasping his hair, messing up the perfectly styled parts. But Bruce couldn’t seem to care because Clark's lips were on his, and they were now married, and oh god how did he get this lucky.

Finally Clark pulled away, but he was smiling at Bruce like he was some big prize and Bruce was grinning back, probably looking at him the same way.

Everyone around them cheered, but nothing else mattered, because they were married.

Bruce couldn’t help but think that husbands had a nice ring to it.

The dinner afterwards was obviously beautiful, everyone had put so much work into it. Martha and his boys had set up a big white table on the other side of the Kent farmhouse and seated each place with the nice china Alfred brought from the Wayne manor.

They had decided to seat Bruce at the end, with Clark in the seat next to him, much like how they sat at league meetings. Diana sat across from Clark, but she mostly talked with Martha and Alfred. Lois and Jimmy sat next to Clark, also lost in conversation, and the boys sat at the end, arguing about who would get to share a room with Kon until his room was done at the manor.

As much as it was Bruce and Clark's wedding, they were mostly ignored to talk to each other, just like how they would’ve preferred.

“B?” Clark said softly, grabbing Bruce's hand and running his thumb over his knuckles like he often did.

“Hm?” Bruce stared at him, once again getting lost in his eyes.

Clark seemed a little lost too, with the devastatingly soft smile on his face. Bruce decided that he never wanted to see any other expression on Clark’s face.

“How did we get so lucky?” Clark whispered to him. Bruce saw his eyes get a little misty as he looked out at his family and friends. Everyone there was so special to them, and Bruce knew it meant so much to Clark to have them there to celebrate this moment.

Bruce glanced out too, but immediately his eyes wandered back to Clark's. “I’ll never know,” he whispered simply.

“I love you.” Clark said, squeezing his hand a little tighter.

The response back slipped out of Bruce’s mouth easily, “I love you. Forever.”

Clark smiled at him cheekily but suddenly Bruce became aware that the conversations around them had quieted to hear the confession.

Jason was the first to break the silence, “Alright. B, stop being sappy. Ma Kent said it’s cake time.”

Bruce rolled his eyes and took Clark's hand as they went inside.

“Alfred made a great cake.”

Clark grinned at him, “I'm so excited to see it.”
