Chapter Text
Of all the good fortune Zoey could ever count in her lifetime, she'd thought joining Huntr/x would be the top spot forever. Turns out dating her bandmates dethroned it handily.
The past six months since her disastrous attempt at a date that turned into a… frankly messy gauntlet of confessions had been nothing short of utter bliss. Toothless arguments about who would sleep where in the evenings, followed by warm good morning kisses rewarding the start of each day.
And the spoiling in between.
It almost seemed Mira and Rumi wanted to make up for the couple months headstart they'd gotten on her the way they made sure to keep her so spoiled. With extra kisses whenever possible, treating her to snacks and her favorite drinks anytime they were out, holding her between them whenever they had an extra moment, one or the other laying on top of her lounging across their ridiculously large couch. Well and truly the hottest ticket in town now more than ever.
All lulling her into a bouncy comfort that often left her giggling and scribbling away at lyrics in her countless notebooks with new vigor. Lost to herself in a hunched frenzy all around the penthouse at all hours.
The kitchen island was her most recent spot.
Bright and early one autumn morning, snuck out of Rumi's bed while her unnie continued to sleep snuggled and warm. Mira had left a couple days prior for an extended solo modeling shoot in France. Zoey grinned remembering how pouty she'd been before her flight, how she'd required at least ten kisses from each of them before she would board the plane.
They'd also planned to video call every night she was away. Hence why Zoey was up so early. The moment Mira got in for the night she would be calling them.
Zoey bounced to the easy rhythm filling her head with the flow of words pouring from her pen to the page. Nodded her head with her eyes closed and spun the pen between her fingers.
It was so comfy and free…
She was so lost in the feeling she jumped when the wave of red hit the Honmoon. Knocking the stool back as she hit her feet and dropped her pen so her shin-kal could take its place. Her bare feet shifted soundless over the floor while she circled to lock onto the source.
Close.
Too close.
Rumi, her blades fell away as she sprinted around the kitchen cabinets and down the stairs to their rooms.
Another burst of red as she threw the door to Rumi's room open and found her sitting up in bed. Hunched over, patterns pulsing a neon purple-red as she clawed over her shoulders.
“Rumi!” Zoey showed zero hesitation running to her. Never again. “Rumi, what's wrong?”
She slid over the bed to get an arm around behind her and reached over for her hand.
“V… voice…” Rumi said, all scratchy through the shortness of breath that kept her in a state of panic. “M-my… voice… again, it's--”
She grimaced and grabbed her throat as her eyes finally turned to look at Zoey. One flickering between caramel brown and sharp gold. Were the patterns reacting to something again? Zoey set her expression to avoid making the panic worse.
“Shh shshsh,” she cooed softly, pulling Rumi over to hold against her chest. “It'll be alright. I've got you.”
She'd get her this time.
When she lifted her head to kiss Rumi's temple though she noticed the heat along her skin. Blinking then lifting a hand to her forehead. Holding the back of her fingers to her cheek.
“... oh Rumi,” she clicked her tongue. “You're burning up… Did you wake up this hot?”
Rumi nodded.
“How's your head? Heavy? Dizzy?”
“Mmm… y-yeah…”
Zoey squeezed her all the tighter.
“Jagiya… take a deeeeeep breath for me, okay?” she murmured. “I don't think it's like before. I think you just have a fever…”
“Are… are you sure?” Rumi's voice broke as she buried her face against Zoey's chest.
“Did you feel warm and dizzy the first time?” Zoey did her best to help clarify gently. Not disregard the very real terror Rumi was feeling. “Did your patterns start reacting right when you woke up, or after you started to get scared?”
She was already breathing softer. Tension fading as she slumped in Zoey's arms and grabbed shaking handfuls of her shirt. Sniffling as she relaxed into tears. And the glow of her patterns softened with her.
“I d-didn't… and they… after,” she rasped, coughing involuntarily. “After I felt… my throat hurting… and scratchy…”
“It sounds like a cold then,” Zoey nodded. “Which we can fix way easier. Just need some medicine, some soup, I'll make some tea for you while you wait--”
Rumi's arms came around her waist for a tighter squeeze as her patterns flickered a fainter pink.
“Th-thank you… Zoey.”
A lift settled firmly in Zoey's chest and she set her resolve. She was going to be the best caretaker Rumi could ever ask for… and it was only fair she give Mira the heads up as well.
“No need to thank me at all,” she grinned. “As much as you guys have been spoiling me lately, it's only fair I get my turn to spoil you. I'll make that tea, Mira should be calling soon so I'll let her know what's going on while I make you some dak juk.”
“You'll cook… for me?”
“I will~” Zoey chuckled. “Hopefully I'm not too rusty--”
“Don't…” Rumi cleared her throat, painfully. “Don't let… Mira cut her trip short… I don't want her to worry.”
Zoey sighed, brushing her fingers through Rumi's hair to straighten it a little from the bedhead she'd woken up with.
“I think she's gonna worry regardless, but I'll do my best to reassure her I can hold down the fort until she gets back.”
“You can… You already are, Zoey…”
“Mmm, maybe hold your judgement until after you try my dak juk,” Zoey winced. “Tea first, and we should have some cold medicine in the cabinet. You okay to lay back down?”
“... can you help… help me upstairs? I'd rather stay… near you.”
“Well I'm definitely not going to say no to that,” Zoey giggled, containing her energy to be sure the kiss on the cheek she followed up with was not too sudden. “C'mon, arms around my neck.”
Rumi managed a tired grin as she snuggled into Zoey's collar with a deep sigh of relief when she hooked under the back of her knees and lifted her out of bed. Even being the smallest of the group, Zoey was no slouch on strength. And Rumi wasn't really that heavy to start with anyway. She took the stairs with ease to the bright sunny living room on the floor above, tall windowed walls allowing the light of morning to fill the whole space.
“If it's too bright I can lower some of the shutters,” she offered as they moved across to the couch. “But a little sunlight will do some good.”
“I'm okay for now,” Rumi mumbled.
She cleared her throat while Zoey was setting her onto the cushions of the couch they'd been able to break in more lately. Relaxing, allowing themselves to take breaks. Had something like this happened before the whole mess with Golden and the Idol Awards, who could say what Rumi might've done. Zoey was just thankful it was happening now, when she could help to the fullest.
The buzz of a recent sample she was working on played from the kitchen island, Mira was making her goodnight call. Perfectly timed.
“Sit tight,” Zoey snagged some throw pillows for Rumi before rushing to answer. “Hey from the future, Mimi!”
“Uugh, I told you not to… why are you running around?” Mira's empty complaints gave up halfway through in favor of amused confusion. “Did I wake you?”
Zoey held the video call to mostly keep herself in frame as she dashed back down stairs to grab a nice fluffy blanket and the cold medicine.
“I'm just getting Rumi settled upstairs,” Zoey said, as nonchalant as possible. “She woke up with a cold, a little scared but she's relaxing now.”
“What?!” Mira sat bolt upright in bed. “What's her temp?! Do I need to--?”
“Before you even ask, she doesn't want you to rush back,” Zoey paused to give Mira a look through the screen. “You know how she is about work.”
“Yeah, but…” for all her attempts to seem aloof and unbothered to the public, Mira was trying less and less to seem so for the two of them. “Tsk, fine… But if her temperature breaks 40° I'm flying home immediately.”
“I'll take it right now, you can talk to her while I do,” Zoey nodded. “I've got this, Mir. I promise I won't let anything happen to her.”
“Oh Zo, I know you won't,” Mira's face moved closer to the screen as Zoey glanced at it again. “I know you can handle it… I'm just worried.”
She mumbled the last bit. Some old habits were a little harder to break. Zoey got it.
“Me too,” Zoey's grip on the blanket tightened as she headed back up the stairs. “So I'm going to channel that into spoiling her right back to good health~”
Mira's low laughter crackled through the receiver as Zoey jogged across the living room to the couch. Vaulting over and coming to wrap Rumi in the blanket.
“Mira wants to coo over you too, Rums~” she smiled, handing Rumi her cellphone and pulling the thermometer from her pocket. Shaking it out briefly. “Hold this under your tongue for a minute while I get the kettle going.”
Rumi waved weakly to Mira through the phone as she sat back in the covers and did as Zoey instructed. The soft sound of Mira insisting she do everything Zoey told her to and definitely not do anything even remotely resembling work made Zoey bite back more smiles as she set up the electric kettle and prepped a mug with a bag of the ginger tea she knew Rumi liked.
Poking around the kitchen for the stock pot and everything she would need to start the dak juk. She left it all on the island to jog back to the couch.
“Alright, let's see,” she stroked through Rumi's hair as she took the thermometer and held it up to check. Letting some of the tension from her chest and leaning toward the phone still in Rumi's hand. “Only 37.9°. We'll keep an eye but that's on the low side. Doctor Zoey prescribes soup and sleep… and panpyrin q for good measure. Drink this.”
She broke open the box and cracked the cap on one of the little bottles to hand to Rumi. There was a grimace, but she did as instructed under Zoey's watchful eye. And Mira's, through the phone.
“Ugh... it's bitter,” Rumi whined.
“Zoey,” Mira's voice crackled. “Aren't you supposed to take that after eating?”
Both of them froze. Zoey snatched up the box and skimmed it quickly.
“20 mL, three times daily… 30 minutes after meals,” she groaned before dropping the box to sprint for the kitchen. “I'm sure it's fine! Hold on, hold on. I'll grab you a snack.”
“Zoey… it's just--”
“It's okay! I can, um… I'll just make some toast! We have strawberry jam, it'll go good with the tea,” Zoey clattered around and popped two slices into the toaster.
They were like five minutes in and she'd already screwed up. But she could fix it! Toast was one of the BRAT foods, perfect for a fever (or was that nausea?), the jam would be sweet for some sugar. The electric kettle beeped and she grabbed it to pour into the mug she'd already set aside. Steaming hot and smelling softly of the ginger already. Perfect.
The toaster popped while she was setting out a plate and the jam jar. She grabbed both pieces between her fingers and had them spread with the fresh jam on a plate in record time. Bringing everything over to set on the coffee table.
“Give the tea a minute or two more,” she instructed, kissing Rumi's forehead and taking her phone back. “I'll steal Mira and start on that dak juk.”
“Thank you… I'll lay down when I'm done… Don't rush anything. Okay?”
Rumi blew Mira a kiss before relinquishing the phone, pulling the blanket around her waist and taking one of the slices of toast to start on.
“No rushing. Just cooking.” Zoey saluted.
Back to the kitchen.
She propped the phone to one side of the counter and pushed her sleeves up for emphasis as she started with prep work. She'd have to do the quick version or risk keeping Rumi waiting longer, but thankfully they had a container of leftover rice in the fridge. Shifting pink on her phone screen drew her eyes to Mira settling down in bed hugging a pillow while watching her.
“How's the shoot going?” Zoey asked offhandedly.
“Bout as good as any other…” Mira yawned. “They're very accommodating… Couple ass-kissers, but mostly really nice. Signed a few things for people who have family that are fans.”
“Aww, sounds fun then. Bet you're the most gorgeous model there~”
“You're biased.”
“Doesn't mean I'm not correct.”
She couldn't help smiling. It was almost like they were all together.
“Having fun?” Mira asked.
Her voice was already dipping into the lower register it tended to whenever she got tired.
“Mhm…” Zoey hummed while measuring out some bone broth from a carton. Keeping her focus on the task but glancing at Mira to grin. “I like taking care of you guys. Not that you need it all that much… Usually it seems to be me.”
“Well… we like it when you need us~” Mira chuckled. “Between the three of us I guess we never have to worry about needing help.”
Zoey nodded while stirring the rice into the bone broth until it all separated from itself, then set the mixture aside and went back to the fridge. Returning with a pack of two chicken thighs she quickly broke open and started slicing in half. Maybe it was her familiarity with small blades, but she'd always had the best knife skills of the three of them in the kitchen.
“I'll probably always need you guys, honestly,” she shrugged as she set the meat to one side of the cutting board. “Which is far from a bad thing.”
“Very far… Will you cook for me too, when I get back?”
Zoey stopped cutting to look at the screen, melting with fondness when she found Mira was starting to sink deeper into her hotel bed. She set the knife down and leaned over the counter to be closer to the camera.
“Of course I will, Mir,” she cooed. “Finish up over there and I'll make something for you when you get home. Whatever you want.”
“Mmm…” Mira nodded. Tipping halfway out of frame as her phone fell over into the covers. “Godeungeo… mujorim…”
Zoey's jaw dropped as she hunched her shoulders and put her nose right up to the screen.
“Really? You're not giving me a break huh?” She made sure to keep her voice low even if she sounded incensed about the ask. “Gotta pick something tough?”
Mira's hum of laughter as she dosed off was so precious she was willing to forgive her for being mean enough to ask for such a difficult dish.
“... goodnight, Mir… Love you~”
“Mm… love you both…”
The little window holding Mira's face shifted before dropping away. Zoey sighed at the blank screen as it went dark from lack of activity, then slapped her cheeks and locked in to her task.
Cook now, moon later.
She had another girlfriend to take care of.
Half an hour later she had a steaming pot of dak juk ready to serve. She turned the heat way down on the stove to keep it warm and hurried around the kitchen island to the couch.
“Okay, time for…” her voice faded once she was looking down at Rumi curled around one of the throw pillows, softly sleeping again.
It was still awfully early.
Half a piece of toast was left on the plate and her mug was sitting empty. Maybe she needed more tea too. Zoey went to put the kettle on again and fixed a bowl of juk to bring over to the coffee table. It seemed easier than making Rumi get up and move to the table in the back of the kitchen.
She can move around later.
“Rumi… Ruuuuumi~” she knelt beside the couch and brushed Rumi's bangs out of her face. “C'mon, have some real breakfast.”
“Mmmm,” Rumi buried her face in the pillow and whined.
“Pleeeease, Rumi… I made it just for you.”
Another second and she watched as Rumi dragged herself up to a seated position. Rubbing her eyes then the whole of her face before dropping her hands into her lap and blinking first at Zoey, then the bowl of food.
“... smells good, Zo.” She leaned closer, almost like she was being drawn in like one of those old western cartoons.
Her voice still scraped when she used it. Hopefully more warmth and sodium would help. The most universal medicine.
Zoey put the dish towel over Rumi's lap before setting the bowl on top of it. The warmth of just the bowl itself would also be helpful, she reasoned. The steam hit Rumi's face and seemed to perk her right up as she blew on the first spoonful and tipped it into her mouth.
Zoey watched in anticipation, walking back the whole cooking process as she waited for Rumi's review and hoped she'd done a good job. Had she sauteed the vegetables long enough? Was the chicken shredded well enough? Did the sesame oil notes register through the other flavors?
Okay that last one wasn't the most important, but she just wanted it to taste good. Good enough to make Rumi feel some comfort. Being sick sucked. And it sucked extra hard when you were a recovering workaholic named Ryu Rumi. Who never really got sick and therefore never seemed to know what to do with herself when she was even slightly under the weather.
A grin of satisfaction crossed her face as Rumi quickly put another full spoon in her mouth.
“Mm… s'really good.”
Zoey's shoulders dropped and she twisted to sit back against the couch to watch Rumi practically inhale the bowl at a steady pace. No exaggeration then.
“Good… There's plenty if you want another helping.”
Rumi paused with the spoon in her bowl and turned a cutting eye toward where Zoey was sat.
“You're eating too… right?” She asked. “You should… after running around…”
Zoey stifled a laugh and rocked up to her feet, taking the nearly empty bowl from Rumi's lap.
“Okay, I'll get you a second helping and one for myself. Thanks for reminding me,” she briefly set the back of her hand to Rumi's forehead to covertly check her temperature again before heading back to the kitchen. “I was working on some new lyrics so I forgot to eat something.”
“Can I hear… them?” Rumi rested over the back of the couch to watch her.
“I dunno… Mira said no work~”
Zoey ladled more juk into Rumi's bowl and set it aside to fix one for herself. The electric kettle beeped to remind her she was also prepping for more tea. Heading back to grab the empty mug. So much to focus on, but hunter training made juggling dishware and gliding around with perfect balance a breeze.
“I won't be… working. Just listening…” Rumi pouted.
Zoey paused her constant moving around to gently poke her in the forehead with two fingers.
“You can turn your brain off for that?”
“You said… you'd take care… of me, but…” Rumi dropped sideways onto the couch and curled up to grumble. “You're picking on me…”
A soft cough shook her shoulders as she assumed the saddest fetal position possible. Folding her arms in a huff. Zoey leaned over the back of the couch to watch her in silence. Waiting. Long enough to catch the attempted covert side-eye to see if her ploy to make Zoey feel guilty was working.
“Baby. My majestic tigress. Rums,” Zoey lilted as she leaned down further. “I am not picking on you, I want to make sure you rest… Anything resembling work is not resting.”
Rumi shot up and swayed a little at the sudden movement before shaking it off. Clicking her tongue in annoyance and resting her head on Zoey's shoulder.
“What am I supposed… to do all day then? Sleep?!”
Zoey traced her hand behind Rumi's shoulders to gently run her fingers through her hair with a hum. It did a good job of relaxing her out of her frustration.
“Mostly… If you sleep, then you heal,” she explained softly. “Being sick usually leaves you tired cause your body is fighting so hard to fix it. Ergo… sleep is a must. But if you're not so tired we can curl up and watch some videos or a movie. Wasn't there a show you wanted to check out?”
“... okay…” Rumi nodded. “Is there more… cgh--tea?”
“I'll make you more. And another bowl of juk, you need the energy.”
“Mm… No show though,” Rumi settled down into the couch again while Zoey went back to the kitchen. “It's some romantic horror thing… I'll probably cry with how woozy I’m… feeling.”
Zoey snerked while she was pouring the hot water over another teabag. Rumi would probably cry even if she wasn't sick. She refrained from saying so though, since she'd already been accused of bullying once…
Wait… she froze as she was putting the kettle back, darting full across the island to snatch up her phone and swipe through her calendar. Oh--
“--shit.”
She slapped herself in the face and dropped against their granite countertop with a groan.
“... Zoey?”
“It's--I'm fine, fine… You just reminded me,” she jumped to gather up Rumi's tea and food and brought it back to the couch. “I have a horror gaming collab stream scheduled tonight with Acantha Rio. That marine biology vtuber... Buuuut maybe I can--”
“No,” Rumi sat back up over the back of the couch to point at her with the best stern glare she could muster. “If Mir can't cut her… shoot short, you can't… c-cancel your stream…”
“But--”
“Zoey, no… When does it… st-start?”
Rumi grimaced and buried her face in the crook of her elbow to cough painfully. Zoey set her food on the coffee table and handed her the warm mug of tea to sip on.
“It's a horror game stream, so long after dark… around 9, I think.”
“Then I'll just… go to bed by 9,” Rumi shrugged. “You can play and not worry.”
That… could maybe work. Zoey fretted at her lips as she paced, then spun on her heels to go get her breakfast before Rumi could worry about her not eating.
“Okaaaaay,” she relented on the way back to sit beside her on the couch. “We'll relax, and I'll hop on the stream after you go to sleep tonight…”
Rumi nudged her shoulder softly and kept diligently eating, “Good. I'll turn in… early so you're not late…”
“I can be a little late for you, c'mon…” Zoey chuckled. “Once you're finished I'll clean up and we can watch stuff.”
Lunch and dinner went much more smoothly than breakfast. Making sure Rumi ate before her medicine this time, for one thing. Zoey ordered some healthy take out for both of them for lunch, and cooked easy rice with a fried egg and steamed vegetables for dinner.
The real highlight was the baesuk she made for Rumi's after dinner dessert. The pear stuffed with honey, ginger, cinnamon, and jujubes steamed to perfection was so well received Rumi must have complimented her a thousand times. And she accepted each while happily watching her eat through the whole sweet treat at the kitchen island. Otherwise quietly relieved that Rumi had recovered enough to sit and eat somewhere other than the couch.
“Are you good… on time?” Rumi asked as she scraped the bottom of the soup bowl with her spoon. Trying to get every last drop of pear and honey.
“Mhm,” Zoey nodded. “I'm joining the stream as a guest, so Canny is handling most of the setup. Take your time.”
“You're such a… sweetheart, Zoey,” Rumi smiled. It was reward enough for the day honestly. “Thank you for… taking care of me all day.”
She cleared her throat and leaned on the counter. Zoey took the dish to the sink with the others and started washing up.
“No worries whatsoever,” she insisted. As she had every other time Rumi lamented needing to be cared for. “Anything else I can get you before bed?”
“... some kisses?” Rumi mumbled.
Zoey smirked back over her shoulder and Rumi held her hands up.
“Not on the mouth!” She qualified so quickly she devolved into a weak coughing fit. “You'll get sick… Just like… on the head or something…”
“I will smother you in goodnight kisses, baby,” Zoey promised. “You've wracked up quite the tab for my services today~”
“... you charge?” Rumi laughed, followed by more coughing. “... In kisses?”
“Yup,” Zoey said proudly. “It's a special deal reserved only for the highest profile VIPs, I'll have you know.”
“Im flattered to be… such an important--” she cleared her throat with clear frustration. “--patron… I think I'll head down…”
Zoey turned off the sink and put the soup bowl on the drying rack to hurry around the kitchen island. Rumi stood up fine on her own. She was having an easier time getting around as the day went on, but after a whole day being sick her posture was slouched as she shuffled along the tile floor to the stairs at the back of the kitchen. Zoey following with a bottle of water.
“I'll tuck you in and collect my payment~”
Rumi turned back to swat her shoulder with a chuckle.
“Good luck on your… stream. Sorry I… c-can't watch.”
Zoey stepped up beside her to put an arm around her waist, “Don't be. If all goes well, maybe Canny will wanna do another.”
Rumi's door was the first off the bottom of the stairs, so they turned right in. After helping Rumi under the covers and indeed accepting her tithe of kisses Zoey dimmed her lights and wished her sweet dreams for the evening.
“... have fun,” Rumi murmured before she was fully out the door.
“I will. Grab me if you need anything. I mean it, Rumi.”
“Mm…”
She shut the door with a soft click and exhaled all her pent up worry before turning sharply to march to her own room. Lights already out, her desktop set up against the wall opposite her bed. The screen saver was a wave of fluctuating neon lines likely meant to be staff lines but really she picked it because it reminded her of the Honmoon. She'd asked Celine early on in their training if the Honmoon looked like staff lines on purpose or if it was just coincidence but she hadn't gotten a clear answer at the time.
Zoey liked to think that was the case.
She nudged her mouse to wake the beast and saw the clock read 8:30p. Clicking around quickly to check her mic and camera were working she queued up her steam account and discord before running to grab one of her most comfortable hoodies. It was likely to be a long night of gaming, she wanted to be comfortable.
A blip from her headset let her know Acantha Rio was reaching out for the pre-stream setup check. She jammed the headset into place over her ears as she dropped back into her top of the line gaming chair and folded her legs up in the seat while clicking around to start a private call with him.
He answered immediately.
“Hello… Zoey-nim?”
“Hey! Just Zoey is fine,” Zoey adjusted her cam before turning it on with a smile. “Do you prefer something over another?”
“Oh whatever you like,” he laughed nervously. “Honestly I'm still a little shocked you reached out. Happy! Excited to play with you, just surprised--”
“Well don't be! After I came across one of your vods where you were gushing about basking sharks how could I not reach out? I was sure we'd be fast fronds.”
Zoey bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing at her own joke. Surely he was okay with puns…
The concept he worked under--that of a catboy so enthused with marine biology he refrained from eating fish no matter how tempting--was also a fun draw once she'd looked into his channel more. Bobby of course did a proper background check on him and the small agency he was working under, but in the end he'd given her the okay to reach out.
She'd been hoping to make a new friend, but if she could mess it up this quickly maybe--
A scoff from her headset and he retorted with, “Jeez, with fronds like you, who needs anemones.”
Yeah, she knew they'd get along.
“Sorry,” she leaned back in her chair to laugh. “Sorry sorry I couldn't resist. It probably will happen again. Am I coming through okay though? Which game should we play first?”
There was a brief back and forth over it, but at least Acantha didn't seem as nervous now. They got everything finalized not a moment too soon as Acantha counted them in to go live to a viewer count many times higher than he had ever seen, by his own admission. But he kept his composure amazingly.
“Ahoy to all our passengers, new and familiar~” he chuckled as his vtuber model remained all smiles and bouncy movements. “As I'm sure all of you are already aware, we have a special guest on board with us this evening. The illustrious lyricist of none other than Huntr/x… Zoey!”
“Heeeey everyone! Thanks for coming to play with us!” Zoey waved both hands at her camera.
Watching the chat absolutely explode on her side screen. Mostly hearts and other emotes but she caught the occasional message before it flew by and got lost.
[ZoeyNumber1Fan00329] : OMG I can't believe Zoey's really here!
[HuntersDon’tQuit357] : Rio is so lucky!
[LordOfCheese] : Not luck, skill
[FantasticFoxtrot] : Coelacanth Squad Rise!
“Oh! I hope to earn my spot on the coelacanth squad by the end of the stream,” Zoey addressed the camera seriously. “I love coelacanths, they're living fossils.”
“I'm sure you will,” Acantha spoke up. “We just have some scary games to get through first. I think we decided to start with something tame, so Repo will be our baseline for the evening.”
“It doesn't look too scary, but Canny has assured me it's a good starter,” Zoey nodded as she readied her keyboard and mouse while the game was loading.
A little message from Acantha warned her to mute on discord because the game had proximity chat built in.
“Ooooh, I'm a cute little robot~” she giggled, poking through the options to change her color to blue. “This is great already.”
“So we're a repo team--you're already laughing?” Acantha chuckled. "What's so funny?”
“Y-your head just hahaha it just flaps backwards when you talk,” Zoey leaned back in her chair to bust up shamelessly. “How is this scary and how am I supposed to focus when you look like a muppet?”
“You'd better. We've got a job to do. The little map--yup you pulled it up that's perfect--it'll fill out as we pass through rooms, and there'll be little circles to show if there's something we can pick up. We gather as much as we can to repo so we make money.”
[Huntr/xStan3656354] : Carefully.
[Waffle_Quaffle] : Yeah if you're too rough you'll break things
[zosuru_wolfgirl] : things lose value if they break
“Right, thanks, chat. If you're too rough with the items they'll break and become less valuable,” Acantha added. “The flashlight is automatic, you can crouch under stuff to hide, and like super crouch to become smaller.”
“Okay, okay… I think I got it.”
They were still in the back of whatever van their robots crashed in on, so Zoey was experimenting with the controls. Still this didn't seem very scary. Once she could move around reliably they struck out with a little floating cart to gather up items to sell.
“Looks like a school or something. Wow the sound design is really satisfying,” Zoey babbled while they explored. “So, like, is this meant to be post-apocalyptic or something? Cause the little bumpers and loading screens and stuff look like a mess.”
“Seems that way to me, honestly,” Acantha agreed. “Plus we're robots rather than humans.”
[eishi_m__n] : Does Zoey know? About the y'know?
[Shug-R_Shark] : I don't think so lol
[Zoey’sPetTurtle3928] : This isn't an ocean game. I expected Subnatica or something with these two
[EternalZilla] : Rio doesn't just play ocean games, he likes variety
[Pookie_Baron] : Yeah! He just loves marine life.
[ActuallyMira2048] : Plus it's supposed to be horror game night, Zoey wouldn't get as scared by ocean stuff.
[IcyPenguin] : Barotrauma can be pretty scary. Claustrophobic
Zoey kept glancing at the chat now and then, grinning as Acantha called her over to a new room and dashing her little robot in that direction.
“Wait, I know where I've seen these guys before!” She announced suddenly as she turned a corner. “Aren't they a new skin in--?”
“HAH!”
The shout rang out right before a strange little man with a shotgun swung around and blasted her. She jumped in her chair and yelped as her robot's health quickly reduced to zero. Her heart was still racing as the death cam had her watching Acantha hiding under a desk while the man with the gun slowly walked around looking for him.
“... what the heck was that?!” She laughed the jump scare off while umuting her discord. “Did you know he was--what's this guy?!”
Acantha got clear of the guy in the game and started laughing.
“He's the monster this time,” he explained. “There's one or more on each level, they have different behaviors. He's blind so he listens for you… and shoots you when he hears you.”
“Pft well I got the last part, what now?”
She watched as Acantha found her little robot head and put it in the cart with the items. Then got to pushing everything again.
“Don't worry, we should have enough to bring you back. I'll find the first turn in.”
She swung the camera all around him to keep lookout.
“No no no, chat. It's not cheating, I'm just… uh, a very helpful ghost.”
“Yes, exactly,” Acantha's model bobbed as he nodded. Face swapping to something more stoic. “We of the Repo Company are just so dedicated to our team we keep them safe even in death.”
Zoey laughed again.
[Tr/xHunter] : lol get a room!
[NotReallyRumi01] : ooooo, yeah! They'd be cute
[HunterStan38675] : I kinda ship it
[GoldenFangirl64568547] : united by marine biology and video games~ <3 <3
“No way!”
Zoey was quick to deny with a smile, but surprised to hear Acantha's voice overlap with hers as he did just the same.
“C'mon now, no shipping talk--except for actual seafaring vessels of course,” he tutted the chat. “This is supposed to be a fun session of gaming.”
[GoldenFangirl64568547] : Shipping is fun!
[Zwolf87] : You heard the captain, knock it off.
[Self-Driving-Honda] : Yeah! Save it for the forums
[ProCaffeinater] : ugh don't remind me those exist
A loud cha-chunking sound drew Zoey's focus back to the game as her robot reappeared near a machine with a cartoonish bag of money.
“Grab the bag and the cart and we'll finish up the level,” Acantha helpfully took the lead. “The game hunter guy can't see, but his hearing is sharp.”
“Aye aye captain.”
Now that Zoey had a better idea what they were up against she was able to finish out the level strong. Only one more minor close call when a weird procession of little gnomes suddenly swarmed her and left her dramatically laugh-screaming while trying to smash them on the floor. When they'd gotten everything turned in and sprinted back to the van to leave they both cheered.
“Perfect! We're the best repo bots!” Acantha laughed.
“Totally, dude! This job is easy peasy.”
A ping from her discord let her know she'd received a private message, which she covertly checked via her phone while Acantha kept interacting with his chat. Catching up on donations.
It was from him.
AcanthaRioTV 9:18pm
Don't worry about the shipping talk. My usual viewers know I don't like that. And my mods know to shut it down if it gets out of hand.
“We'll get to stop at the store next. What kind of power up do you want?” He asked over mic.
“Oh speed 100%! Or maybe stamina.”
“We have enough for both. I'll go strength and grab a sword.”
Out of frame of her camera Zoey typed a quick reply.
ZoeyHuntr/x 9:19pm
Don't worry, we're used to getting that sort of attention now and then. Our fans mostly keep it to private forums.
They'd all seen some of them… Well, Rumi and herself had. Mira never really cared to look.
“Sounds good. What are these trap things? They work on the monsters?” She asked as she circled the little dilapidated mini mart.
“Yeah you can take out the monsters and they drop these orbs that we can sell for more money. They're really delicate though.”
Another ping.
AcanthaRioTV 9:20pm
My condolences, that would drive me up a wall. My fans have been pretty cool about the aroace thing so I'm lucky.
Oooh, that explains the quick reaction… Cool cool, Zoey grinned and hopped her little robot around to make herself look focused. Again tapping out a message covertly out of frame.
ZoeyHuntr/x 9:21pm
That is lucky! You're fans seem great.
AcanthaRioTV 9:21pm
They really are. <3
Yours have a lot of energy. It's fun to have them hyping up the stream chat.
ZoeyHuntr/x 9:22pm
Oh yeah!
If our fans know how to do anything, it's bring the hype!
“Okay, I'm checking out,” Acantha announced. “Back on the truck and we'll hit the next level.”
“Aye aye captain!” Zoey saluted the camera and hurried aboard. “Setting course for likely less calm waters.”
“Very likely indeed. But we are consummate professionals and we've got valuables to repossess. Just be sure to grab your upgrades before we move on.”
The next hour was spent in Repo. They fell into a really good rhythm to work through each level, though all of the weird kinda mutated looking creatures were tough to work around. Zoey got caught off guard even if Acantha tried to warn her what each one did when they bumped into them.
“Alright, how about we switch up to something a little scarier?” He asked once they'd cleared another level. “Have you played Phasmophobia?”
“What-a-phobia? Oh! Oh oh wait is that the ghost hunting one? I've seen some vids but I haven't tried it yet.”
“Awesome, this'll be fun then. It's got proximity chat as well. Shouldn't take too long to install, we'll take a quick break and--”
Zoey's attention was pulled away from him when she heard a knock at her door. There was only one person that could be, but she didn't want to alert the chat.
“Sounds good, brb everyone, I'll grab a snack and stuff too. Maybe some popcorn,” she rambled quickly with a little kiss blown to the camera. “Back in a bit.”
She muted everything at lightning speed and flipped the privacy cover on her webcam before launching herself from her chair to reach the door. Finding Rumi in a familiar full bundle of hoodie, sweatpants, and even a blanket. Looking tired and apologetic.
It reminded Zoey of before. When she was still hiding. But she quickly got breathing again as she realized the old turtleneck wasn't in play so it wasn't quite the same.
Still concerning with Rumi shivering and miserable looking.
“Baby, what's wrong?” Zoey asked as she rubbed Rumi's arms through the layers of clothes and blanket.
“I'm s-sorry…” Rumi stuttered. Taking a step closer. “I didn't want to… I'm really r-really cold now and I c-can't… seem to get warm.”
Her voice was still rough, more hoarse from having hopefully been sleeping the last hour or more Zoey had been playing. Zoey hugged her and put a hand to her forehead. Definitely less warm than this morning, so that was a relief.
“Oh! Your fever broke, that's great.”
Rumi hunched her shoulders and grimaced as she tried to bury herself against Zoey's shoulder for warmth.
“Y-yeah, but… I've t-tried like… every blanket I own and st-still…”
“Ah…”
Zoey thought about Rumi's room. Classy, kinda minimal. They had a great heating system, but if even that wasn't working…
“C-can I stay in… h-here?” Rumi asked softly. “I promise I'll be quiet…”
As if Zoey would ever say no to such a request.
“Of course you can, jagiya,” Just the warmth from her computer alone would be helpful… “Actually, I have a great idea. Sit tight for just a minute okay?”
Zoey brought her to sit on the side of her bed before jumping back to her computer to set up Phasmophobia to install. A quick message to Acantha that was basically ‘Started the install, just be a minute’ and she ran out of her room. Up the stairs to grab a fresh bottle of water--and one extra for Rumi, just in case. A quick rummage through the junk drawer for a screwdriver, then across the living room to the couch.
“Hup,” she gave a grunt as she lifted one of their big, round ottomans over her head and rushed back down the stairs with her hands and pockets full.
To Rumi's utter confusion when she barged back into her room.
“Z-Zoey, what's--?”
“You'll see. Gimme five minutes.”
Zoey set the ottoman down before crouching next to her gaming chair with the screwdriver. Making quick work of the screws holding her right armrest in place and setting it aside to push the ottoman up next to it. Ready to go.
“Okay,” Zoey went back to the bed and helped Rumi up. “Now you can cuddle up with me, nice and close to the computer where it's warm.”
Rumi breathed a laugh and coughed a bit more as she let herself be walked across the room. Zoey dropped into her chair and guided Rumi to curl up her legs on the ottoman while hugging around her middle with her head resting in her lap.
“Is it comfortable enough?” She checked while stroking through Rumi's hair.
The shivering seemed to be subsiding…
“It's perfect, Zoey,” Rumi hummed. She squeezed weakly and closed her eyes. “I promise… I'll be quiet…”
It sounded like she was already falling back asleep. Zoey rubbed her shoulder and made sure the blanket was pulled up over her.
“Don't worry, aein. I'll cover if I have to. Get some rest.”
“Mmm… Love you.”
“Love you too.”
Zoey waited another moment more before putting her headset back on and umuting herself.
“Back,” she announced, pointedly at a normal volume. “No popcorn, but did grab a drink. The game'll be done in a second.”
[mrstealYOgirl] : Cam!
[Kitten_Lover<3] : You forgot your cam Zoey-nim
[Zo-easyPeasy] : She doesn't have to
[PhantomMenacing] : Awww c'mon, I wanna see her jump at the ghosts
“Ah, right right, sorry guys,” Zoey checked the preview angle of the camera, making a slight adjustment to make double sure she kept Rumi out of frame before flipping the privacy cover back. “There we go. Now we're back proper~”
[RevenantKane] : Yay! Welcome back!
[ProCaffeinater] : Stream hype restored!
[TruBluRumi] : Ready to hunt ghosts?
“Back,” Acantha's model jumped back to life as he returned to his computer as well. “Ah, you beat me. Haha. How goes the install?”
“Just finishing up. You said this one has proximity too?”
She clicked play the moment the install finished, settling in at her keyboard as the game filled her main screen.
“It does! There's quite a lot of special sound features too. And you can expect some jump scares~”
Zoey watched the menu as she waited for the game invite from Acantha… and realized she was going to be accosted by jump scares with a still sick Rumi sleeping in her lap.
[Rizz_Dawg369] : ooooh, Zoey's face
[TurtleUnion] : Her face when he said jump scares!
[HolySmoker99] : lol
[Fruity-Two-Shoes] : Is Zoey weak to ghosts?
“I'm fine with ghosts,” she grinned. Playing off the brief slip of dread thinking of disturbing Rumi. “Watch. This is where I lock in and don't scream once. You'll see.”
“Oooo, we're stoked for this confidence,” Acantha chuckled. “I sent over the invite. No character customization to mess with this time, I'll pick a small map to start us out. Don't forget to mute on discord.”
“Mm.”
Zoey did so. She accepted the invite the moment it popped up and spared a last glance down at her lap to remind herself what she was fighting for as she breathed deeply and set her expression. May Gwi-ma take her before she risked waking Rumi.
[BowstringBanditt] : whoa… did you guys see that?
[xXx_GhostyTrips_xXx] : She really is locked in
[Shmagic] : It's a bluff
[FananaBanana] : Yeah it's for the bit, she jumped so much with just Repo
[Zoey’s#1Fan6657467867] : Nah, I saw footage of her in an underground rap battle from a few years ago. That's totally how she looks when she gets serious
They could speculate all they wanted. Zoey refused to so much as breathe wrong for the next few hours if it meant Rumi got some good sleep.
The next 45 minutes were spent ghost hunting. Only a few close calls where a sudden voice or crash got her to tense up, but she just bit the inside of her cheek to keep from making a sound. Chat ate the whole thing up, with fans clamoring over her focused demeanor and competence with quickly deducing what type of haunting it was. At a certain point the smaller maps became an exercise in speed hunting as she rushed through with Acantha to rule out each incorrect clue to narrow down the answer. They had to switch to the larger maps.
“Ahhh I hate the prison,” Acantha whined. His model swapped out some sad, teary eyes as they moved down the cell blocks. “It's so big and echoey… You have to teach me your secret to staying so calm, Zoey.”
[Huntr/xStan865716887] : Zoey queen!!
[Crazy-Frog-Hunter] : she's just that good
[ZoeyTruther6354] : Little monster on the scene~
Zoey smirked and winked at the camera.
“It's just mind over matter,” she shrugged. “Zen stuff, y'know? After this though, should we play Left 4 Dead? Then I can show off my wicked aim.”
A loud clang rang through the cellblock around them and Zoey clenched the muscles in her stomach to swallow the yelp that tried to rush up her throat. Acantha was not so restrained. His scream cut off abruptly as the disconnect sound for discord played.
“... Canny?” She raised an eyebrow.
A disconnected message flashed over the game and kicked her back to the lobby. Alone.
“... oh,” she leaned back from the screen and turned to her other one to find the stream had gone black. “Oh no.”
The chat was freaking out.
[MiraFan#1_65464] : What happened?!
[PhantasyIsland] : ghost got ‘im rip
[OceanMoonie] : rip
[RulesofRoses654654]: Did he quit out? Lol
[ZoeyHuntr/x] : Sit tight guys
[MonkieOfTheSea] : Zoey!
[Kitten_Lover<3] : Zoey-nim, did the game die?
[Mnt2BQueen] : stream scuffed lol
Zoey got a ping from discord and quickly brought it up to check it.
AcanthaRioTV 10:56pm
Oh my god, I am so so sorry!
ZoeyHuntr/x 10:56pm
What happened? Are you okay?
Power outage?
AcanthaRioTV 10:57pm
I'm fine
I uh
I flinched so bad I kicked the plug loose on my PC.
Zoey's jaw dropped as she barked a laugh before slapping her hand over her mouth. Rumi shifted in her lap and made a mumbling noise as she resettled without fully waking up.
AcanthaRioTV 10:58pm
I'm starting things back up, on phone for the moment.
Sorry about this really
ZoeyHuntr/x 10:58pm
Don't be! That's crazy. Do you want me to let the chat know?
She brushed her fingers through Rumi's hair while she waited.
AcanthaRioTV 10:59pm
I'll own up to my shame when I get things started again. If you could just let everyone know I'll be back in a few minutes.
I have to get all my programs back up and make sure nothing broke or corrupted.
ZoeyHuntr/x 10:59pm
Aye aye, captain owo7
Zoey clicked over to the stream chat and typed up a quick message.
[ZoeyHuntr/x] : Sorry for the delay! Your faithful captain will be returning shortly. We appreciate your patience~
[Dodge_Counter56334] : yaaaay
[AirhornBuddy] : Let's gooooo
[FirstMateTaterTot] : Can't keep a good captain down!
[FlotillaTortilla] : Zoey do you play games often? What's your favorite rn?
[CanCanDan] : Yeah yeah tell us about your current library while we wait please!
Zoey grinned and laced her fingers together to bend them backwards and crack them.
[ZoeyHuntr/x] : Well, since you guys asked~
Another 15 minutes filled with Zoey gushing over the single player games she'd been diving into between work--and hunting, which went unmentioned--kept the chat rolling and occupied until Acantha got the stream back up. His little model bouncing and his voice flustered as he apologized profusely to the fans and got Zoey back into a call with her cam set to the side of the screen.
There was another wave of emojis teasing him once he admitted to killing his computer in panic, but just as quickly his fans defended him. They moved along to Left 4 Dead to finish out the night.
“And with 1am approaching I think that'll be all for tonight,” Acantha sighed. “Thank you everyone for joining us. Hopefully next time I will have built up my courage… or maybe we'll just play some cozy games to balance things out, haha.”
“Oh I could crush some Stardew,” Zoey smiled at the camera. “Or like… uuuh, Satisfactory I've heard is good.”
“Sounds like a plan, we'll set it up. For now, have a good evening Coelacanth Squad and thanks to all the Hunters for joining us for this fright filled stream,” Acantha nodded as he found another stream to raid and signed off. “Catch ya on the flip side!”
AcanthaRioTV 12:01am
Whew, that went great! Aside from the uh, technical difficulties.
Thanks again for joining. I know you and Huntr/x are usually swamped, but any time you want you're more than welcome to drop in on stream.
ZoeyHuntr/x 12:02am
Does that mean I'm officially part of the Coelacanth Squad~?
AcanthaRioTV 12:02am
I think you've sufficiently proven your credentials. Welcome aboard.
ZoeyHuntr/x 12:02am
Awesome! I'll let you know next time our schedule opens up. The girls were wanting to watch but couldn't tonight.
Next time for sure.
I should get to bed for the night.
Jal ja!
AcanthaRioTV 12:02am
Puk ja, Zoey
Thank you again, I had a blast.
Zoey yawned and systematically and briskly closed all the programs from her desktop. Leaving just the background selfie of her, Mira, and Rumi taken on stage at a concert with the audience in the background. A sleepy grin and she looked down to admire the real Rumi still soundly asleep in her lap.
Obviously, no photo could compare.
“Rumi… let's go to bed~”
She cooed softly while stroking her cheek, grinning wider as Rumi tried to follow her touch.
“Mmm…” she whined and squeezed closer to jam her face into Zoey's stomach.
“Ruuuumi, c'mon you'd rather sleep like this all night than snuggle up in bed with me?” Zoey lamented as dramatically as her sleepy self could.
It only took another moment and a huff for Rumi to drag herself up to a huddled sitting position. Still with her eyes tightly closed as Zoey got out of her chair and just scooped Rumi into her arms. Unwilling to leave her sitting all miserable like that any longer than she had to.
“Good girl, thank you. Last time moving tonight, I promise.”
She toted her beautiful princess across the room and set her on her bed. The sight of Rumi curling up into a snuggly little ball almost made a good case for just climbing right in with her, but Zoey had last little preps to do before allowing herself the privilege.
Bathroom. Teeth brushed. Goodnight text to Mira.
No response unfortunately but she was in the middle of the shoot so Zoey understood. She would catch her in the morning, setting her alarm to be sure of it.
“Zoooooeeey…”
Rumi's teary voice from her room had her skipping double time to hurry back to the bed.
“I'm here, I'm here, sorry. All ready for bed, gomdori.”
Rumi held out both arms to grab her the moment she was in reach. Her cheek pressed up against Zoey's chest with a contented hum as they both curled up in the mound of pillows and fluffy blankets and a few stray stuffed animals Zoey maintained were very important to her sleeping experience. Pancake the giant plush whale shark big enough for her to crawl inside of was crucial, but sequestered to the wall more often with the girls sleeping over with her.
He took up the post with valor to keep any of them from getting hurt or suffering unintentional discomfort.
Zoey reached over to pat him for another job well done as she kissed Rumi's forehead and drifted off for the night.
A distant slam and rhythmic thumping jarred Zoey out of her restful slumber the next morning. She fumbled in confusion for her phone and nearly flew into panic when she saw it was almost 10am.
I slept through the alarm! She swiped around her phone haphazardly to find no missed call from Mira right as her bedroom door opened to reveal the woman herself catching her breath.
No way in hell she flew a twelve hour flight in five just because Zoey didn't call to say goodnight, but before Zoey even got the wherewithal to ask what was happening Mira was throwing off her jacket and shoes on her way across Zoey's room and dropping onto the bed beside her with the longest groan she'd ever managed.
And that was saying something.
“Uh, Mir… are you… okay?” Zoey turned slowly to ask.
Mindful that Rumi was still clinging to her waist in her sleep.
“Shoot finished early,” Mira mumbled into the blankets. “Caught the first flight… Very tired.”
Zoey winced, leaning over to take Mira's hair down out of the messy bun she'd looked to have hastily thrown it into for the trip. Massaging her fingers through to her scalp and feeling literal days of tension relax from her.
“Welcome home then, Mimi… Need help getting changed?”
She was definitely tired, because she didn't even complain about the nickname this time.
“Nuh-uh… later…”
She turned her head against the bed and Zoey wrangled her glasses away to keep her from breaking them. Before anything else could be said she heard Mira softly snoring and sat looking between her two sleepy girls…
Of all the good fortune Zoey could count in her lifetime, being able to care for them would never be matched.
She thought so continuously as she carefully slipped from Rumi's arms, tucked them both in, and went to get dressed. Within moments they'd gravitated to each other. Zoey gave them each a kiss before donning her big cozy jacket and bucket hat so she could run out unbothered.
The ingredients for Godeungeo-mujorim weren't going to buy and cook themselves after all.

Rumi spotted on Zoey cam during horror collab stream!! Clip evidence!
Oh my god! This one is huge, guys!
Okay okay okay so Zoey did a collab horror stream with that vtuber Acantha Rio. They played some repo game then took a break while Zoey downloaded some other game and she turned off her cam and everything and was gone for like 15mins.
When she got back though she didn't turn her cam back on right away. BUT WHEN SHE DID it was adjusted. And if you look reeeeeeally close in the dark you can totally see a little flash of purple in her lap.
Guys. Rumi was laying in Zoey's lap! Check the clip! Check it!
