Chapter 7: Epilogue - Dear Shandril

Summary:

Simple epilogue, one year later.

Chapter Text

Dear Shandril,

This last year has gone too quickly and I have failed to write you. I’ve made new promises and those come first as I’ve finally found a place I can be useful among the old tomes here in Reme.

If you can ever spare the time to visit me, I have taken over running the Feriblan’s Library. He now spends much of his retirement telling stories of the adventures he and his friend Eralion went on. Sometimes those are outlandish and sometimes they teach a lesson, but they always seem to bring him a joy to relive.

Whenever scholars come asking about lichdom or undeath magic, I do not chide or lecture, but simply direct them to the section holding Eralion’s journals. Among those pages is the real truth of such dark promises: isolation and loss, not power and pride.

As caretaker of the library, I have a lot of discretion and have maintained a section related to Freya, the Crucible, and Fairhill history. I hope you will find it does your community’s story justice. Somehow, the children here have heard the tale of Eralion’s Shadow and the Crucible of Freya. They call me the “Hero of Fairhill”, although I know it is not among the ledgers I keep. Children look for heroes until they learn that a hero is simply anyone willing to act when the time is needed.

Have you heard any word from my party members? I still have not received correspondence, but have tried to keep an ear out for news. I wouldn’t want to attract them unwanted attention, but I risk asking travelers if they’ve seen a party of competent adventurers and a gargoyle companion. If you hear from them, please let them know I’ve also reserved space in the library for their stories should they ever indulge me in writing them down.

As for Fairhill and you, I still intend to visit. Perhaps at the next harvest festival I can be there so I might see Fairhill at its brightest. I will always owe you and Fairhill for it is there that I learned that magic, like knowledge, must always be kept with care and honor.
