A New Definition for Star of the City

Summary:

One random day in Mephistopheles, after the Sinners have been stuck in District 9 for a few weeks, Ryoshu gets quite the interesting (possibly even ingenious) idea, and chooses to pitch it to those she finds to be the most interesting choices.

Or: A random Limbus Company AU where my four favorite Sinners (Ryoshu, Don Quixote, Heathcliff and Yi Sang) start a music group, because it's kind of funny. This is my first time in a while getting one of the fics I write out of my head, so hopefully it's good.

Notes:

writing don quixotes dialogue is so annoying... i do not want to learn knightly speech (lying) thus donqui may be somewhat poorly written

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: how ingenious...

Chapter Text

Mephistopheles hadn't moved in a while. The majority of the Sinners were on the brink of reaching the same level of boredom as they were on the Great Lake. They had been essentially stranded in the Backstreets of District 9 for a mission they had to finish. Apparently, Vergilius still had business to take care of. Ryoshu had taken to looking into the music of the District, since it was known for being the 'Streets of Music', in addition to a certain Distortion incident everyone in the City remembers.

Based off of all the posters she'd seen throughout the Backstreets, there were so many styles of music here that it would be nearly impossible to keep track of all of them. Ryoshu didn't particularly care for a majority of them, but some of the bands she had heard in the distance intrigued her. Heavy sounds, songs full of pent-up rage, yet there was something deeper to them. Something softer. High energy, loud and cryptic songs with generally positive feelings. Normally she would find them shallow and pointless, but one group she heard worked in tonal shifts she found enjoyable. However, Ryoshu couldn't help but favor the soft and emotional songs she heard echoing from across the streets. You would think people would be too traumatized to continue using the piano for their music after the Pianist's appearance, but one of the groups she heard seemed to focus entirely on it. The raw emotions in the song resonated with her in a way she hadn't expected.

All this focus on music was starting to hurt her head, though. She always hears the same things around here, and they tend to overlap all at once. Same melodies, same instruments, same themes, all playing at the same time. It was rare for a song to resonate with her properly. Maybe if she made music for herself...

Ryoshu let out a small chuckle at that thought. She hadn't tried writing music before. There wasn't exactly any time, and she was more interested in visual art personally. And yet... the idea lingered with her even after a few seconds had passed.

She turned to the golden-haired woman sitting near her on the bus. "Hey. D.Q." Don Quixote looked up, tilting her head. "Hmm? Ryoshu? What dost thou need?"

"We're in the S.O.M., yeah?" Ryoshu posed this as a question, though she wasn't intending to recieve an answer. "Been looking into the music here. Some of the songs are F.I.R.E." (Filled w/ Intensely Resonating Emotions) Don Quixote nodded at this, though she didn't seem to truly understand what Ryoshu meant. Too bad Sinclair wasn't nearby right now to translate. Ryoshu might need to cut down a bit on the SANGRIA for now. "Verily, they are quite beautiful! Truly created with the passion of humanity! ...What might thou be speaking of this to me for, exactly?"

"It'd be pretty funny to perform onstage like those I.G." Ryoshu gestured towards the window, as one of the many posters on the wall nearby showed a group of four girls looking a bit too happy for Backstreets residents, wearing coordinated outfits and acting cute onstage.

"Ah? I would not have expected thou to be intrigued by idol culture." Don Quixote gave a slight grin, seeming happy to have learned something more about Ryoshu.

"Mmh," Ryoshu shrugged, scoffing a bit at Don Quixote's statement. It wasn't entirely wrong, but not quite right either.. "N.R.I. At least not in the music style. The performances seem interesting, though. A bit O.S.G., but still fun to watch."

"Indeed! I hath, in the past, heard of a Fixer Office that once performed onstage much like that group! Verily, their music videos were truly so full of lively colors and elegant dances..." Don Quixote seemed as though she was about to get sidetracked talking about Fixers again. Ryoshu sighed. "D.Q. Help me see who's willing to help me M.M." She bluntly stated what she originally was trying to ask Don Quixote for before the woman began her rant.

"M.M... sigh, if only young Sinclair were near... Ah, could it be thou art asking me to assist thee in forming... an idol group?!" Don Quixote's eyes sparkled with excitement as she leaned forwards, her excitement only growing stronger as Ryoshu nodded. "Verily! I would be honored!!"

"K. Go ask the others about helping out too." Ryoshu stood up as she finished her order. Don Quixote gave an eager nod and dashed off the bus to speak with the other Sinners.

Ryoshu started thinking as she walked to the back of Mephistopheles, returning to her room. Who exactly would be willing to join an idol group, anyways? Don Quixote seemed to be the only real option, but maybe she could convince someone else. Ryoshu considered who she would find the most interesting for the group. Faust... too stuck-up, and she would never agree anyways. Ishmael might agree if she were pushed to, but it likely wouldn't be very enthusiastic. Hong Lu likely would agree, and it'd be good to let him get his feelings out, but he would be more of the type to like traditional idol music. Same goes for Rodion. For someone who would actually like the style Ryoshu planned to go for, she'd need someone like Heathcliff...

Ryoshu chuckled at the thought of Heathcliff in an idol uniform. He would never join a typical idol group, but with the type of music she's interested in making... he may actually give it a shot. It'd be pretty funny to see him try to perform too. Even if it'd take a while, Ryoshu liked the idea of how challenging it might be to get him to join as long as it was worth it. He seemed like the type to destroy the stage, though.

Come to think of it, someone like Yi Sang would be good to balance out the energy a bit if she did manage to get Heathcliff to join. His vocals were also good, and with his speech patterns, he could be a good lyric writer. She could also try to get Sinclair to join, but he likely wouldn't want to perform in front of a live audience.

Given that none of the remaining options particularly interested her, looks like she has her picks. She'll need to speak with them later, in addition to asking Dante and Vergilius about whether they'd even be able to make a music group. All of that stuff can wait, though. All the thinking has exhausted her. Ryoshu laid down in her room, resting her eyes. She might as well get some sleep if she'll need to deal with trying to reason with the unreasonable (Don Quixote and Heathcliff) later.
