Lily's Intervention

Chapter 10

Chapter Text

The air was crisp that evening, the kind of cool breeze that whispered through the trees by the lake, making the leaves rustle in a way that almost felt like a warning. The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the world in a soft twilight glow. It was quiet, almost too quiet, but that didn’t matter because the two boys standing near the water were anything but calm.

James, leaning awkwardly against a large rock, stared at his shoes. Severus stood a few paces away, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his back straight like a soldier preparing for battle. The only thing between them was the silence, thick and heavy, like the tension before a storm.

Lily, having played the matchmaker, was now conveniently not around to witness this moment. She'd said something about giving them space, but really, she was hiding behind a large oak tree nearby, her ears straining for every word they might say.

“I… I’m not good at this,” James muttered, breaking the silence. He winced as soon as the words left his mouth. This wasn’t exactly the grand romantic speech he’d been envisioning.

Severus raised an eyebrow, his face impassive. “You’re not good at a lot of things, Potter.”

James let out a nervous laugh, scratching the back of his neck. “Yeah, I guess that’s true.” He sighed, looking over at Severus. “But seriously, I… I don’t know what to say to you, Snape. I’ve tried to talk to you so many times, but it always comes out wrong. And I keep thinking I’ll figure it out, but I—”

Severus’ expression softened just a bit, though he quickly masked it behind his usual scowl. “You’re rambling. Stop doing that.”

James shut his mouth, embarrassed. “Right. Sorry.”

They stood there in silence again. James felt his heart pounding in his chest, his palms clammy. This was it. He had to say something now. But Severus wasn’t making this easy. He just stood there, still as a statue, looking so… so Severus. James wasn’t sure how much more he could take before his brain imploded.

“You’ve been looking at me a lot lately,” Severus said, breaking the silence. His voice was oddly quiet, almost hesitant.

James froze. “What?”

Severus’s gaze shifted toward the water, his expression unreadable. “You’ve been staring at me. A lot. I’ve noticed.”

James’s mouth went dry. “Uh, well, I— I don’t mean to! I just... you know, I...” He trailed off, his words lost in the uncertainty of the moment.

Severus let out an almost imperceptible sigh. “I’m not blind, Potter. I know.”

James took a deep breath. “Okay, I admit it. I’ve been staring. I’m sorry. It’s just… I don’t know how to not look at you.”

Severus stiffened slightly, but didn’t look away. “And why is that?”

James shifted uncomfortably, trying to find the right words. “Because... you’re different. You’ve always been different, Snape. You’re... you’re clever and... and I don’t know, you just— you make my brain do weird things.”

Severus glanced at him quickly, his brow furrowing. “Weird things?” he echoed, his voice low.

James swallowed. “Yeah. Weird things. I don’t know what to do with them. With you. So I just end up staring like an idiot.” He gave a small laugh, though it sounded more like a nervous giggle than anything else.

Severus was quiet for a long moment. James didn’t know what was going on in his mind—if anything at all. But when Severus spoke again, his tone had softened.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

James’s breath hitched in his chest. “Because I can’t pretend anymore. Not with you. And not with myself. I don’t even know if you care or if you feel the same, but I need to say it. I... I like you. More than just the way you make my brain do weird things. And I’ve tried to ignore it, but I can’t anymore. I don’t know what to do with it, but I don’t want to keep pretending like it’s not happening.”

Severus looked away, his expression unreadable. His heart was pounding in his chest, his thoughts swirling in a blur of confusion and hesitation. He hadn’t expected this. James Potter—James Potter—admitting he liked him? It felt like a joke, like one of those pranks he used to pull. But there was something in James’s voice, something raw and unguarded that made Severus’s stomach twist in a way he wasn’t sure he wanted to understand.

“You’re an idiot,” Severus muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

James blinked, caught off guard. “What?”

Severus’s face flushed, but he didn’t look at James. “I didn’t ask for your confession, Potter. I didn’t— I—” He was stammering now, his usual calm replaced with something else, something far less controlled. “It’s not like you can just—”

“Severus,” James interrupted gently. “I know I’m an idiot. I’ve always been one. But I… I’m not backing out. Not now.”

The air between them was thick with tension, the silence pressing down on them again. James held his breath, waiting for Severus’s response. Would he walk away? Would he laugh it off? Would he—?

Finally, Severus turned, his gaze flicking to James’s face. His expression was conflicted, but there was something there that hadn’t been before. Something softer, less guarded.

“Don’t think this means anything, Potter,” Severus said quietly, though his words didn’t hold the same biting edge they once had. “Because it doesn’t. Not yet.”

James smiled, feeling a strange weight lift off his shoulders. It wasn’t a “yes,” but it wasn’t a rejection either. And for the first time in what felt like forever, it felt like maybe—just maybe—there was hope.

Lily, who had been watching from her hiding spot behind the tree, let out a squeal of excitement. She had heard everything. And even though things weren’t completely sorted yet, she knew they were getting there. Finally.

But of course nothing is ever that easy.

The evening started innocently enough, as all plans that Lily Evans devised did. She had declared it was a "study group" party, though no one really believed that. Everyone knew the truth—it was an excuse for the Marauders to hang out, and for Lily to get a little something done about James and Severus, because she was getting so tired of watching them dance around each other.

The evening was buzzing with laughter and chatter as the common room filled up with students. Lily had expertly made sure Severus and James were both present, though neither of them seemed to notice the subtle manipulations she had made to get them in the same room. James, as always, was in the thick of things, while Severus hung off to the side, arms crossed tightly, looking like he might bolt at any second.

But Lily wasn’t worried. She had a plan.

"Alright, everyone!" Lily called out as she waved her hand, gaining the attention of the group. "It's time for a game. A fun one! Truth or Dare!"

The students groaned, but no one objected—everyone loved a good game of Truth or Dare. As they all gathered in a circle, Lily gave James a pointed look from across the room. She’d already prearranged the first "dare."

James groaned when his turn came. "Alright, let’s get this over with," he said, looking around the circle. His eyes flicked to Severus, who was sitting a few seats away, trying not to look too interested but failing miserably.

Lily smiled, her expression entirely too innocent. "James, Truth or Dare?"

James swallowed. “Dare.”

Lily's smile grew wider, her eyes flicking to Severus for a fraction of a second before locking back onto James. "I dare you to confess your crush."

James froze. His mind went blank. His first instinct was to laugh it off, but he knew he couldn’t. The game was rigged, and Lily was looking at him with a very specific expression. His heart began to race.

Severus stiffened, his gaze sharp as he watched James. James looked around the circle nervously, trying to avoid looking directly at him. But Lily made sure their eyes met before the words left his mouth.

James cleared his throat. “It’s… uh… it’s no one… important.”

The words hung in the air, thick and uncomfortable. The circle was silent for a moment, and then someone shifted uncomfortably. But Severus—Severus didn’t speak. He didn’t even look at James. Instead, his gaze flicked downward, a faint pink creeping into his ears as he stared at the floor.

Lily’s heart sank, and she cursed herself for thinking this was a good idea.

James felt like the ground had slipped out from under him. His stomach twisted with guilt. He glanced quickly at Severus and saw the hurt flash across his face. No, he thought. I didn’t mean that.

He quickly opened his mouth, trying to salvage the moment. "Wait, I didn’t— I didn’t mean it like that. Severus—"

But it was too late. Severus was already standing, his expression cold and unreadable. He turned sharply and walked toward the door, his steps sharp against the stone floor.

Lily wanted to scream. She wanted to scream, but she couldn’t. Not yet. James, on the other hand, looked like he might fall apart right there in front of everyone.

"Severus, wait—!" James called after him, but Severus didn’t even flinch. He kept walking, his back rigid.

The room was dead silent, except for the distant sound of Severus’s footsteps retreating down the hall. James’s face had gone pale. He could feel everyone’s eyes on him, even though no one was saying a word.

Lily sighed and slapped a hand to her forehead. “That was not how this was supposed to go.”

James stared at the door for a moment, his thoughts racing. His stomach twisted again, and this time it wasn’t because of nerves. He had messed up. Big time.

"Potter, you're an idiot," Sirius muttered, watching James with a mixture of pity and annoyance. "You really know how to make a mess of things."

James nodded silently, still in shock. He turned to Lily. “I—I didn’t mean it. You know that, right?”

Lily shot him a look of pure exasperation, but there was also a hint of sympathy. “I know. But you have got to get your act together. You’ve made a fool of yourself, and now you’ve hurt Severus.”

James clenched his fists at his sides. “I… I didn’t think it would come out like that. It was just— I was nervous and—”

“Stop making excuses,” Lily said, cutting him off. “You’ve got to go after him. Now.”

James hesitated. “But—”

“No. Don’t argue. Go. Fix it.”

He nodded wordlessly and bolted out of the common room before anyone could stop him. His heart was pounding in his chest, his mind whirling with panic. He didn’t know what he would say when he caught up to Severus, but he had to make things right. He couldn’t let this go.

Meanwhile, Lily sat back in her seat, her fingers digging into the fabric of her chair as she tried not to scream. This was the third time things had gone horribly wrong. It was as if the universe was conspiring against her matchmaking plans.

But she wasn’t giving up.

No, not this time.

As James sprinted through the hallways, his mind racing with a thousand thoughts, one thing was clear: he couldn’t let Severus slip away like this. Not when he was so close to finally saying everything he needed to say.

He turned a corner and skidded to a stop when he saw Severus at the end of the corridor, still walking away.

“Severus, wait!” James called again, this time his voice steady but urgent.

Severus paused but didn’t turn around. His shoulders were tense, his arms crossed, but he wasn’t moving.

“I’m sorry,” James said, closing the distance between them. “I didn’t mean it like that. I just— I panicked. I didn’t know what to say, but I… I want you to know that it wasn’t a lie. You are important. You’re… everything.”

Severus finally turned, his face still unreadable. “Everything?”

James nodded. “Yeah. I’ve been an idiot. I’m sorry.”

There was a long silence between them. Severus didn’t speak at first, but his expression softened just a little. His voice was quiet when he finally spoke.

“You really know how to make a mess of things, Potter.”

James smiled softly. “I know. But I’m trying to fix it.”
