Chapter Text

Amy took a step towards him again as if approaching a scared chao. Everyone could feel the tension there was… A heavy, aching pull between two souls who had long been separated by time and tragedy.

Sonic trembled, pupils dilated in fear. His body was locked in place while his soul was trying desperately to escape his body. Amy stood there with quiet determination blooming in her chest. She knew him. He was still Sonic. The hero that would refuse to break… To give up.

Her sonic… He never talked about his feelings. At first it was just about romance that Amy would try to force out of him, maybe marriage promises, dates, or specific day to hold hands for the negotiation of 30 seconds. It was when the adventures got more dangerous. Life threatening...

Sure, on the outside Sonic would just lie down on the grassy fields after a battle and close his eyes. Breathing in the air of freedom they had all fought for. But Amy could see it... He ran away from the tugging feelings telling him. 'That it was a close call'. His emotional state was more bruised than his physical state.
Once… He did open up to her, slightly. After the metal virus. When he was finally healed from the aching pain of metal surging through his veins he just... hugged her... Amy remembered how much she had wanted to do over those couple of weeks, she just never thought he felt the same longing she did. “I really missed this” He whispered in her ear.... a crack in her knight’s armour that sent an aching feeling to her chest. she could feel the desperation in that embrace. Just them. After all that. Amy could relate to that fear. Relate to his anger, confusion, longing...

Now, that older version of her Sonic was breaking. Trying to keep his shield up... Begging her to not tug on his already broken heart. She couldn't relate to the death of a partner... But she knew the feeling of the fear of losing one... When sonic would run straight into battle, not looking back. When he'd save her from a blow during a fight... Even when he had stayed on earth with Chris longer than she thought he would.

Was he ok?

Did she not hold on tight enough?

Had she lost him?

She can relate to this in her own way… He just needs to let her. This didn’t erase the past they had together…
Amy took another step, each movement measured, careful. She saw him for what he was right now… Her broken knight.
Her voice wavered, but she wouldn’t allow it to break.

“Sonic the Hedgehog.” The words trembled on her lips and echoed around in the vast space. Sonic looked up. His chest twisted painfully hearing his name be spoken in that soft but determined way once more. In the mist of the weight of the time, they had been apart, the years of longing and uncertainty, a faint flicker of hope was lit. She took another step, her eyes never leaving his, watching as he silently struggled with the emotions that threatened to wash over him.
"I love you..." She said certainty in her eyes. Sonic’s ears drooped, His voice came in a whisper. “P-please don’t do this…” The words were desperate, the plea hanging in the air between them like a fragile thread. She wanted to shout, to tell him that he didn’t get to keep her at arm’s length anymore, not when everything they had been through together was still alive in her heart. But instead, she stepped closer.

“I said I love you.” Her voice cut through the air, unwavering now. She could see the way his hands shook, the way his grip tightened on the table behind him. He was trying to hold onto something, anything, to keep himself from crumbling. “I would never stop believing in you, Sonic.” Words heavy with truth, with everything she had carried in her heart since she met him.

She took another step, and then another. There was still a distance to go, but she was willing to take this slowly. For him. He remained silent and Amy took this as an opportunity… “It’s a relief to me that I kept my vow,” she continued, each word a promise, “to be by your side in any way I can.” She could see his eyes start to shift, the walls he had so carefully built around himself beginning to tremble. “When you let me go on adventures with you, Sonic, it opened a new door for me. You opened it. You showed me that I could trust, count on, and believe in you.” Amy’s mind painted the image of her little pink self with her hammer promising to stay by his side forever.

And with each step forward, her heart bled a little more for him, for them. “I always believed that we would make our way back to each other.” Her belief she had never let go of, even when the world had tried to pull them apart. “I would wait for you to come to me over and over and over again, Sonic!” Her voice trembled. His hands heft the desk for them to clutch his sides painfully. The dam was breaking. Chipping away word from word. He could hear her voice… Alive, waiting, claiming.

“You told me I was strong, I was brave, I was loyal. And for you, Sonic, I will always try to be those things. Even when it’s hard.” She was getting closer to him now and Sonic’s pulse quickened. The guilt, the regret, the confusion. It all threatened to spill out of him the closer she got. "Your hope drove me Sonic. It drove me crazy sometimes but most of the time… It was all I ever needed to keep smiling". Amy was standing in front of him now. "Don't you dare, not for one moment, believe that I would be disappointed or blame you for anything I had to endure”. She smiled sadly up at him. “I. Amy Rose am willing to take a million blows for you Sonic the Hedgehog. And not once would I want you feel an ounce of guilt from not stopping me doing so...". She looked up at the pain and frustration in his eyes. She could see his chest rising and falling quickly.

She took his hands, gently, and Sonic froze. His breath hitched, his body stiffened, and for a moment, the entire world seemed to stand still. She felt the hesitation in his hand, the way he was trembling while holding onto that last thread of self-control that was slipping away.
“Let me give you a new hope,” she whispered softly, her heart thudding painfully in her chest as she placed his cold fingers over her warm heart. “Something worth fighting for again. Not out of grief, but out of the love I would never let die before I did.” Her voice was steady now, full of everything she had been holding back for so long.
That was it. The final blow. A quiver of his lip.

Sonic’s body shuddered. He barely held it together, his eyes wide and desperate. Her heartbeat. He could feel every steady beat under his fingertips. “A-Ames?” he whispered, the way it cracked his voice. Hands quivering where she held them. That was it. He finally said it.... her name.... the first time ever since...
Amy’s heart raced as she opened her arms to him, an invitation. A promise. To hold him, to love him, to take him back into her heart, where he had always belonged.
It was just one step.

In that moment, as the years of pain and longing collided into one simple, vulnerable step…

Sonic took it.

The dam he had tried so desperately to keep intact finally gave way. His legs buckling beneath him as he collapsed into her arms. His hands shook, his breath coming in sharp, broken gasps. Amy let her arms cradle him and lace her fingers through his blue spines. Sonic had been holding this back for eternity. His sobs were raw and guttural, escaping from deep inside of him as his arms wrapped around her, his face buried in her quills.

Amy held him tightly, her own tears flowing freely. She felt his chest heaving against hers, his body shaking with the weight of everything he had never said, of all the words he had never been able to express. Her scent, her hands running through his quills, Her heart… It was beating again. The familiar glow that burned out in his chest for so long had sparked to life the second he felt that familiar embrace. It was Amy... His Amy.... Years of denial... delusional dreams of her coming back. The moments replayed in his head… when the accusing voices would blare like sirens in his head... The fear, the isolation, the silence... Hating the sound of her name on his tongue or anyone else’s...
The hallucinations... Chasing her... legs pumping relentlessly... Trying to catch a glimpse of her face before he’d wake up from his twisted reality... His lungs burned as he'd scream her name repeatedly to the horizon... He was shattered... But now? Two hearts were finally healed, beating in unison again.

It was like coming home. His home. She had always been his home.
Sonic’s sobs were relentless, broken cries that tore through his chest with the intensity of everything he had lost, everything he had tried to bury. “Oh Ames,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “My sweet Amy…”

That was when it happened. The water was calmer with the weight of the dam gone. The world felt righter again. The pain, the guilt, the sorrow, they didn’t go away, but in that moment, it didn’t matter. Because Amy was there. And for the first time in years, Sonic allowed himself to feel it, to feel her, to feel them. Now it was just his muffled cry that was heard. He clutched the fabric of her dress, as the tears continued to fall. Amy nuzzled closer in his chest.
Tails hugged Cream tightly, their faces wet with tears. Rouge buried her face in Knuckles’ chest, her own soft cries muffled by his strength. Knuckles stood still, his jaw clenched, but his eyes were gentle as he watched Sonic finally break free of the chains he had wrapped around himself. Shadow closed his eyes, unable to watch the rawness of it all, but even he couldn’t deny that this moment was one they all needed.

And as the sobs continued, Sonic held onto Amy, and for the first time in years, they both allowed themselves to simply exist… in the love they had always shared.
