midnight encounter

Chapter 3: that thing between us

Chapter Text

The café smells like espresso and cinnamon.

Beca notices that immediately when she pushes the door open, the warm air hitting her face after the cold outside. The bell above the door chimes softly, the sound familiar enough that her chest tightens.

They’ve been coming here for years. Before rehearsals. After late studio sessions. Sunday mornings when Chloe insists that people need sunlight, Beca. Their table is already occupied. Of course it is.

Chloe Beale sits in the corner by the window, wrapped in a soft gray sweater, one leg tucked under her in the chair like she always does. Her red hair falls over one shoulder in a loose wave, glowing where the afternoon light catches it.

Beca stops for half a second. Because now she’s noticing it. Not the way she always has—absently, fondly—but the way Claire described last night. Like a bright light suddenly flipped on in her brain. Red hair. Soft laugh. You sounded like someone who really loves her.

Chloe looks up from her mug. Her face immediately brightens. “Hey!” she says, lifting a hand in a little wave.

Beca walks over, trying very hard to act normal. “Hey.”

She slides into the chair across from Chloe. Chloe studies her for a second. “You look tired.”

“Thanks.”

“I mean it in a concerned way,” Chloe says quickly.

“I know.”

Chloe takes a sip of her drink, eyes still watching Beca over the rim of the mug. “So.”

Beca sighs. “Are we doing the thing where you interrogate me?”

Chloe grins. “Yes.”

“Great.”

“Stacie said you disappeared with someone.”

“Stacie disappears with people constantly. She has no room to judge.”

Chloe leans forward slightly. “Was she cute?”

Beca exhales slowly. “Yeah.”

Chloe’s grin widens. “Red hair, apparently.”

Beca groans quietly. “I hate that Stacie reported that detail.”

“I like that detail,” Chloe says. She reaches across the table and taps Beca’s hand lightly. “So? What was her name?”

Beca freezes. Claire’s voice echoes in her head. You’re in love with her. She swallows. “…Claire.”

Chloe nods. “Claire. Nice.”

There’s no jealousy in her voice. No tension. Just curiosity. Which somehow makes this harder. Beca looks down at the table. The wood grain blurs slightly. Chloe notices. Her voice softens.

“Hey.”

Beca looks up again. Chloe tilts her head. “Something weird happened, didn’t it?”

Beca lets out a short laugh. “You could say that.”

Chloe waits patiently. She’s always been good at that. Giving Beca space to talk when she’s ready. Beca rubs the back of her neck. “Okay, so…we went back to her place.”

Chloe nods slowly. “Okay.”

“And we were like…you know.”

Chloe raises an eyebrow. “I’m following.”

Beca stares at her coffee cup. “And I accidentally said someone else’s name.”

Chloe blinks. “Oh.”

“Yeah.”

Chloe winces sympathetically. “Oof.”

“Exactly.”

“That’s rough.”

Beca laughs weakly. “You have no idea.”

Chloe leans forward. “Wait—whose name did you say?”

The question hangs in the air. Beca feels like the room suddenly got smaller. This is the moment. She could lie. She could say literally any other name. But the truth has been sitting in her chest all morning like a weight. And suddenly she’s too tired to carry it.

Beca exhales. “…yours.”

Chloe stills. The café noise continues around them—milk steaming, quiet conversations, a spoon clinking against ceramic—but at their table everything goes quiet. Chloe blinks again.

“Mine?”

Beca nods once. “Yeah.”

Chloe leans back slowly in her chair. “Wow.”

Beca laughs nervously. “Yeah, that was her reaction too.”

Chloe runs a hand through her hair. “So you just—like—in the middle of fucking—”

“Well—”

“Oh my god.”

Beca hides her face briefly. “I know.”

Chloe lets out a disbelieving laugh. “That’s…impressive.”

“Please stop saying things that make this worse.”

Chloe presses her lips together, trying to contain a smile. “Sorry. I’m not laughing at you.”

“You are absolutely laughing at me.”

“A little.”

Beca groans. Chloe studies her again. But this time there’s something different in her expression. Something thoughtful. “Did she get mad?” Chloe asks.

“No,” Beca says. “She actually handled it really well.”

“That’s good.”

“She just assumed I forgot her name.”

Chloe nods. “That’s fair.”

Beca hesitates. Then adds quietly, “But that’s not why it happened.”

Chloe’s gaze sharpens. “What do you mean?”

Beca’s heart starts beating harder. She looks out the window for a second, watching people pass on the sidewalk. Then she says it.

“She told me I said it like I was in love with you.” Chloe goes completely still. Beca forces herself to keep going before she loses her nerve. “And at first I thought that was ridiculous.”

Chloe’s fingers tighten slightly around her mug. “But then I started thinking about it,” Beca continues. “And now I’m…not so sure.”

Silence settles between them. Heavy and electric. Chloe’s eyes are fixed on her.

“Beca,” she says softly.

Beca swallows. “Yeah.”

Chloe hesitates. Then asks the obvious question. “…do you think she’s right?”

The air feels fragile. Like one wrong word could shatter something. Beca laughs quietly.

“I think the bigger question is why your name came out without me thinking about it.”

Chloe’s breath catches almost imperceptibly. Beca looks at her fully now. And suddenly it feels impossible not to say the rest.

“You’ve been…everywhere in my head lately,” Beca admits. Chloe’s eyes widen slightly. “I mean, you’ve always been there, but now it’s like—every memory I have, you’re in it.”

Chloe doesn’t interrupt. She just listens. Beca gestures vaguely.

“You’re the first person I want to tell things to. You’re the person I call when something good happens. Or bad.”

Chloe’s expression softens.

“And apparently,” Beca adds dryly, “you’re the person I accidentally call someone else while I’m drunk and hooking up.”

That earns a small laugh from Chloe. But it fades quickly. Her voice is quiet when she speaks again.

“Beca…are you saying…”

Beca feels her pulse in her throat. “I think I might be in love with you.”

The words land between them like something fragile. Chloe’s face goes completely still. For a second Beca wonders if she’s just ruined everything.

Then Chloe exhales slowly. “Wow.”

“Yeah.”

“You picked a dramatic way to figure that out.”

“I know.”

Chloe rubs her hands together nervously. “You really said my name during a hookup.”

“Yes, Chloe. Pretty sure that's been established.”

Chloe laughs again. But this time it’s shaky. She looks down at the table. Then back up at Beca. “You know what’s weird?” she says.

“What?”

Chloe’s smile is small. “I always wondered if that might happen.”

Beca frowns. “What?”

Chloe shrugs slightly. “I mean…you and I have always been kind of…” She gestures between them. “…like this.”

“Like what?”

“Close.”

Beca huffs. “That’s an understatement.”

Chloe smiles faintly. “Sometimes I thought maybe you felt something—no that’s not what I mean. Sometimes it just felt like we were supposed to be there for each other, in whatever way that ended up being.”

Beca’s heart skips. “You thought that?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

Chloe laughs softly. “Because you were always dating someone else.”

Beca winces, remembering some particularly questionable dating choices. “Fair.”

“And also,” Chloe adds, “I didn’t want to ruin what we already had.”

That sentence lands hard. Because it’s the exact fear that’s been sitting in Beca’s chest all day. Beca leans forward slightly.

“So is that what’s happening? Am I ruining it right now?”

Chloe looks at her. Really looks. Her expression softens into something warm and complicated. “I don’t think so.”

Beca’s breath catches. Chloe reaches across the table slowly. Her fingers brush Beca’s. The contact sends a small jolt up Beca’s arm.

Chloe smiles gently. “I think we might just be figuring it out.”

Beca lets out a quiet breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “Yeah?”

Chloe nods. “Yeah.”

They sit there for a moment. Hands touching. The café buzzing quietly around them. Then Chloe tilts her head, amused again.

“You know,” she says.

“What?”

Chloe’s grin grows. “If this works out, I’m going to tell everyone that you confessed your love for me because you accidentally said my name while hooking up with someone else.”

Beca groans. “Oh my god.”

Chloe laughs.

And for the first time since last night, Beca feels like maybe the universe didn’t just explode.

Maybe it just…shifted.
