Chapter Text
The next time Chuuya sees Dazai, it isn’t raining.
That’s the first thing he notices.
No storm clouds crowding the sky, no wind sharp enough to cut through bone, no rain soaking through his coat to give him something else to focus on. Just clear air, cool and still, the city stretched out beneath them in quiet lights.
And Dazai.
Standing there like nothing ever happened. Like rooftops and rain and that moment hadn’t existed at all.
“Chuuya,” Dazai hums, hands in his coat pockets, tone light.
“You look short today.”
Chuuya scoffs, rolling his eyes as he steps closer, boots scraping softly against the concrete.
“And you look annoying. Some things never change.”
It’s easy. Too easy.
Falling back into this rhythm — insults, eye rolls, the familiar push and pull that’s always defined them. It slips into place like muscle memory, like something neither of them ever really unlearned.
But something is off.
Dazai stands a little closer than usual, just inside the space Chuuya would normally shove him out of without thinking.
Chuuya doesn’t step back.
The air between them feels heavier, like something unfinished is sitting there, waiting.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” Dazai says suddenly.
Chuuya’s expression sharpens, gaze snapping toward him.
“I’ve been working.”
“Mm.” Dazai tilts his head, studying him too closely, eyes sharper than his voice suggests.
“Sure.”
There’s a pause.
Not the usual kind — not filled with sarcasm or irritation — just something quieter, stretched thin between them.
Chuuya looks away first. The city sprawls beneath the rooftop, lights flickering in distant windows, cars moving like slow lines of gold along the streets. The night hums softly, steady and indifferent.
“You’re the one acting weird,” Chuuya mutters.
Dazai laughs softly, the sound lighter than it should be.
“Weird? Me?”
“Yeah. You’re not talking.”
“That’s new?”
Chuuya glares, jaw tightening slightly.
“You know what I mean.”
Dazai doesn’t answer right away.
When Chuuya finally looks back at him, something in Dazai’s expression has shifted — the usual teasing edge dulled, replaced by something quieter, something that lingers just a little too long.
“About before,” Dazai starts.
Chuuya cuts him off immediately. “Don’t.”
Dazai smiles faintly. “I figured.”
Another silence.
This one stretches longer, settling into the space between them like it belongs there.
Chuuya can feel it again — that pull. Not gravity, not quite. Something sharper, something that presses inward instead of down. Like being drawn into orbit with no clear way out.
“Then why are you here?” Chuuya asks.
Dazai steps closer.
Not joking. Not teasing. Just… closer.
Close enough that Chuuya can see the way his expression softens, the way his breath steadies like he’s made a decision he’s not going to take back.
“You didn’t leave,” he says quietly.
Chuuya’s breath catches, just slightly, barely noticeable. “Neither did you.”
That does it.
The distance between them disappears in a second.
This time, it isn’t careful.
Dazai’s hand catches in Chuuya’s coat, pulling him forward, the fabric bunching under his grip. Chuuya doesn’t hesitate — doesn’t think — just grabs him back, fingers curling tight like he’s been waiting for something to break the tension.
The kiss isn’t soft.
It’s sharp and warm and a little breathless, like something that’s been building too long and finally snaps. Chuuya leans into it without holding back, frustration and something deeper twisting together, something that feels dangerously close to relief.
Dazai responds immediately, like he expected it — like he wanted it — his usual laziness gone, replaced with something more real, more present. His grip tightens slightly, steadying rather than pulling away.
For a moment, everything else disappears.
No past.
No Port Mafia.
No distance.
Just this.
When they pull apart, it’s slower this time — not because they want to, but because neither of them seems sure how to stop. The space between them lingers, close enough to feel each other’s breath.
Chuuya exhales, forehead nearly brushing Dazai’s.
“You’re an idiot.”
Dazai smiles, softer than usual. “Takes one to know one.”
Chuuya huffs out something between a laugh and a sigh, tension loosening just slightly, though it doesn’t disappear.
Dazai lets out a quiet breath, something lighter than before, like he’s letting the moment settle instead of pushing it away.
Chuuya rolls his eyes, but he doesn’t move.
Neither of them does.
The space between them stays close, almost nonexistent, like stepping back would mean admitting too much. Wind slips across the rooftop, tugging lightly at Chuuya’s coat, brushing through his hair, carrying the distant sounds of the city below — traffic, voices, life continuing like nothing has changed.
But something has.
Chuuya exhales slowly, gaze flicking away for half a second before settling back on Dazai, like he can’t quite decide whether to stay or leave.
“…Idiot,” he mutters, quieter this time.
Dazai just smiles — not mocking, not sharp. Something real.
And still, neither of them steps away.
