Chapter Text
Shelby was awoken by a light knocking on the door. She sat up in bed, and reached over towards the nightstand, where her glasses laid. She put them on.
She looked over at the widow, seeing the sun slowly creep over the town's wall. The sky was painted in different shades of red, orange, pink and blue. A pretty sight.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the knocking returning. It wasn’t an impatient knock, it was more to grab her attention if she was awake. Which she now was. Shelby opened her month to answer, then quickly slammed it shut. She didn’t know what to do.
How would she go about her situation? How should she? Play nice? Refuse to speak to them? Or should she play their game, play by their rules until she gets a chance to act? She wanted revenge. She needed it. But how?
She needed control. Right now, they were the ones that had control over her. She needed to regain control. That's one thing she had learnt as a vampire. Control mattered most. She could get it. They just needed to trust her.
The knocking returned. She decided playing long for now would work.
“Come in,” Shelby answered. She heard the lock turn, and watched as the door handle was pushed down.
“Good morning, Shelby,” The doctor greeted her with a small smile. He was holding another tray with what she assumed would be her breakfast. Bread, some fruit, and a glass of water.
“... Morning,” Shelby hesitantly replied, avoiding eye contact. His smile grew for a second, then it went back to what she was greeted with. He walked up to her, placing the tray beside the bed, then backing away to give her space.
“Did you get a good night's sleep?” He asked her. She tensed up a bit at the question. A stupid question. Good night’s sleep? While she was kidnapped, and nonconsensually turned back human? Yeah she had a great night's sleep.
“Mhm.” She replied sharply, not convincing anyone. He looked over her, with a look that could almost see through all her lies, see what she was thinking. But she knew he couldn't. If he could, then he would know that this little thing they’re doing was stupid, useless and terrible. He wouldn’t try so hard to “help” her.
Instead of commenting on her obvious lie, he started a harder conversation.
“Do you want to talk?” He gently asked her. She went silent, tensing up. She didn't want to talk with him. At least not yet. She needed to gain trust gradually. Not instantly, that would be way too suspicious.
“Not today?”
Shelby shook her head, choosing to stay silent.
“That's okay,” Legs reassured her. At least he tried to.
She needed to play her cards right, if her plan was to work.
“What’s going to happen now?” Shelby asked him.
“Well, we’re not at a full agreement, but we’ve agreed to keep you here until they trust you wont… do anything,” Legundo told her, trying to phrase it as nicely as possible.
She didn't know if she preferred it being covered up or being told straight up. At least it was nice that he somewhat thought of her feelings. She decided to push on the subject.
“What do you mean by ‘keep me here’? Is it because you don't trust me?” Shelby accused. “Do you think I'll hurt you? Do you really think that of me?” Her voice rose up with more and more pent up anger by each word. She looked at him with sharp, angry eyes, filled with pure hurt and pain. He winced, taking long to form his sentences.
“I- I’m sorry, Shelby, I really am. I know this isn't great, I know it’s difficult, but it was the best that we could do-” The doctor started, talking to her like she was an injured wild animal. That was probably what they thought of her. A wild dangerous animal. She didn’t like it. But she could play into it.
“So I just have no say in this? You’re the only ones with a say and controlling my life? And your reasoning is that I’m a monster? You’re the only reason I became one!” Shelby yelled at him, cutting him off. The doctor opened his mouth to calm her down, or try to convince her that it was true, but it closed after no words that would work. Because it was all true. He couldn't deny it.
But she also saw something else in his eyes. An emotion she wasn't familiar with. “I’m sorry. You’re not the monster here Shelby” He sounded close to breaking. Shelby could just give him a little push. One little push and he would break. But she didn’t. For some reason, it felt too cruel.
“Leave. I want to be alone.” She looked away from him, looking out the window instead. “Please?” She said, wanting him to go away. She knew that she needed it. She also knew that he needed it too. More than her.
”Of course,” He walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. But he did not lock it.
