Chapter Text
"You REALLY want to investigate this noise you supposedly heard yesterday?" I said as I peered into the tunnel. The tunnel went on a long way, the only light coming from the periodic manhole covers until it eventually faded to black.
Me and Andy were standing on the bank of a creek; Angel Creek to be specific. The storm drain tunnel entrance was gaping on the side of it.
"Dude I'm telling you there's something in there"
"Wouldn't that make you not want to go there again??"
"C'mon man we gotta find out. For science"
"Whatever you say"
Andy turned back to our third friend, who was still standing on the opposite bank, barely inside the hole in the fence.
"Spamiel!! Get over here with the bat!"
Spamiel was our slightly slower and bat-owning friend that we convinced to come with us. Honestly I'm not sure how Andy convinced me to do this either.
Spamiel darted across the creek, trying to keep his shoes dry.
"Aw man, now my socks are all wet :("
"Alright give me the bat. Lucas, you got the flashlight right?"
"yeah" I shone the flashlight down the tunnel.
"Are you ready?" Andy asked. I shrugged, sweeping the flashlight back and forth. I didn't see anything dangerous down there. It was just a storm drain tunnel after all.
"Uhh, guys.. are you sure this is a good idea..?" Spamiel stuttered. He was always overly cautious, but gave the vibe that he would end up dying in a horror movie anyways.
"Yes SPAMIEL I'm sure. If there's anything
actually down there we have to document it."
Not going to lie I thought this was a really dumb idea, but I didn't mention that to Andy. If we were going to get murdered by a sewer crackhead, at least we would get murdered together.
"Let's just go," I muttered. I let Andy go in first (because he has his camera, and the cameraman never dies. Also because I'm not dying first from one of his ideas).
We slowly walked into the entrance. The gravel crunching beneath our feet was the only sound echoing through the tunnel.
I glanced back. "Spamiel? Are you coming?"
"Uhhhh I think I'm going to stay back here.." Of course he was. Spamiel was always such a scaredy cat.
Andy held the bat carefully as we made our way farther into the tunnel.
"You're sure you heard a noise in here?" I asked. From what I could see it looked like a pretty standard tunnel. Dark, but normal.
"It was farther down. Like when you can barely see the light from outside," he said. He made sure not to take his eyes off the tunnel. We still couldn't see an end to it.
We were aprouching the first manhole cover.
"A-Are you guys okay in there?" Spamiel's voice echoed from the entrance of the tunnel. Now I risked looking back: the entrance we came in was far away now.
"OH MY GOD!!! IT'S THE MONSTER!!" I said alarmingly.
"WHAT WHERE REALLY!?!?" I think Spamiel shit his pants.
"No doofus." Me and Andy kept walking down the tunnel. My back was starting to hurt from leaning down so much.
"Oh hey there's broken glass" I said shining the flashlight down. Lots of scattered pieces twinkled up at me.
"Be careful guys!!" I looked back at Spamiel. He was still standing under the light of the first manhole cover.
"Yeah yeah we're careful"
We reached the second manhole cover and took a break under the natural light.
"This is where you heard the noise?" I asked, looking down the tunnel. I couldn't make out a third manhole cover.
"Yeah just past here" Andy pointed into the dark.
This section had a ledge for the stormwater to continue traveling down through the tunnel; It was about waist high.
I pulled myself up and scooted farther in for Andy to join me.
"You go in front still, you've got the bat" I said.
"Alright yeah.."
We kept quiet, listening for any indication of the tunnel monster.
"Did you see that?" Andy said suddenly.
"See what"
"The movement. It was right there." Andy points into the darkness.
"you're gonna ask the guy who sees static if the movement was real bro? It was probably nothing"
We kept walking, slower now. We crept down the tunnel. This section seemed endless. My flashlight still couldn't reach the end of it, and the last manhole's light was getting smaller and smaller behind us.
Then we heard it: two thumps like footsteps. Andy and I look at each other with wide eyes.
We turned and ran out so fast you wouldn't believe it. I jumped down from the ledge and fell on my knees, I scrambled up and kept running. I could hear Andy behind me.
We ran out the tunnel and through the creek, splashing noisily. Spamiel was soaking wet because when he heard us running out he ran too and tripped in the creek.
I looked down and realized my knees were bleeding from the fall.
"At least I didn't fall on the glass.." I wiped the cobwebs off my sleeve. "Hey Andy you good?"
"I hit my head but I think I'm okay"
"Alright. Let's get out of here"
We climbed up the bank and back through the fence. We ended up sitting on the curb of the dusty parking lot waiting for Lenny to pick us up.
Lenny's car finally rolled up 20 minutes later and we got in. Andy took shotgun and looked back at me with a smirk.
"Okay that was actually pretty fun"
"We almost got slimed out by the tunnel monster bro"
"C'mon do it for the plot. We gotta go back"
"Man fuck the plot we're not going back there"
