chapter 6

Spy knocked on the Engineer's door before entering. Inside, he saw Pyro sitting next to Engineer, where the shorter man was wiring something, flashes of light reflecting on his goggles. Bits of sweat running down his forehead as he focused on the project he was working on.

Pyro noticed Spy and happily waved to him, where the masked man gave a quick nod to Pyro. “Laborer." Spy called out, "I assume it is done?" Engineer looked up and took off his goggles and saw that it was just Spy. He chuckled a bit and nodded. “Yup, this thing's done. Was a real doozy to wire, y'know?”

Spy hummed and stepped closer. Pyro was humming happily to themselves as they watched the small little bug-like creatures crawl around, being controlled by Engineer on a remote controller. “How does is work, exactly?” Spy asked, turning to Engineer as he puffed out a cloud of smoke. The Engineer coughed a bit and waved his hand around. “No smokin’ in my workshop, spy.”

Spy rolled his eyes and dropped the cig, squashing the health hazard with his shoe, leaving some ashes to smear on the floor. Engineer nodded in thanks and turned to the robot bugs, “Them bug robots have a small camera built in them, and with this here remote of mine, I can see it on the screen.”

Pyro laughed as the robot bug crawled up their arm and to their hand. “They work really well.” Engie commented, chuckling as he watched Pyro's antics.

Spy smiled as he saw the robot working properly. “Good. With this, we'll almost complete this mission.”

“Uh.. Hey, Spy?” Engineer looked at the French man, and Spy did the same to the Texan. “What is it?”

Engineer sighed, setting the remote controller down on the wooden table next to Pyro. “I can see somethin’ changing in Scout. The lark seems.. Happier. I was thinkin’ as his dad, maybe you can—”

“Laborer. You know very well not to talk about that here.” Spy said through gritted teeth. Regret and sadness could be seen in his eyes. Engineer nodded and sighed. “Right.. Sorry.. Just, look out for him, right?”

Spy sighed and turned back to leave. “Of course I will.” He closed the door to the workshop and walked away.

He's never shown it to anyone else, but Spy has always kept a close eye on their Scout. Ever since the young man was a child, he always made sure his son was safe from a far distance. And now that there was something visibly changing within Scout, Spy will continue to keep a close eye on him.

———

Scout was getting ready to go to the city to meet with Bettany once again since he was invited to hang out with her. He applied some lip gloss, making him look even younger. He chuckled, pucking his lips in front of the mirror and hitting a pose. “Hell yeah. If I was a chick, I'd be the most irresistible one in the world.”

He heard a knock on his door, and he immediately turned back and tied his hair in a ponytail. “Comin!’”

Scout walked to his door and opened it. There, he saw Engie. The brunette smiled at the older man. “Hey, hardhat. Was just gettin’ ready. Somethin’ you need?”

The older man chuckled at how energetic Scout was before shaking his head. “Just came to see ya before you leave, lil’ lark. And also.. We need ya to get invited into the Schuyler mansion, alright? It's for the mission.”

Scout blinked at him before nodding, “Alright then. I'll get mahself invited. Just you wait an’ see, Engie!”

Engineer chuckled and nodded, “That's my boy.” The older man patted his shoulder. That phrase made Scout pause and his smile faded. A few moments passed in silence as the Engineer looked at Scout with a soft smile. “Stay safe, alright?”

Scout smiled at the Engineer and nodded, “Don't worry, I will.”

———
Jenny and Bethany were eating some ice cream, talking and chatting as they walked around Teufort. They kept walking, not knowing where their feet would take them. They walked to a more secluded spot at a park where the grass was wilting and practically dust.

Jenny then remembered that she had to somehow get invited into the Schuyler mansion. But how? “I just remembered, Jen, your uncle does a lot of moving as you said, right?” Jennifer's attention snapped back to Bettany, breaking her train of thought.

She turned her head towards her companion and the brunette smiled a bit before nodding. “Yeah, why?”

“Just.. Will you leave Teufort soon?” Jenny looked at Bethany, and for the first time, she realized that they were just the same height as one another. They were looking at each other's eyes, and Jenny saw Bethany's cheeks heat up a bit. The young lady snapped back to reality before answering, “I.. Yeah, prolly. That's how it is in the the Zbornak family, I guess..”

The rich young lady slowly nodded and looked away, licking her ice cream once again.

An uncomfortable silence followed them as they walked. Jenny was about to say something, when a van abruptly halted in front of them, causing them to stop walking.Jenny felt her heart skip a beat, and suddenly, her hand was on Bethany's waist, slowly leading her away from the van. “Bee, we have to go. Now.” she whispered, and Bettany nodded.

They turned around and immediately started running away from the van, when Jenny heard the van door slide open. Scout looked back and saw a bearded man pointing a gun to them.

He didn't know why, but he scooped Bethany up in his arms and tried to run. It was no use. The man had fired his gun and shot Scout's leg, causing him to let out a quick yelp and for his heel to break, resulting in the both of them falling to the ground. He tossed Bethany away from him. The sand was getting into their eyes as the gravel cut Scout's hand. He hissed and cursed. Betjhany sat up, trying to pull Jenny up to try and escape. “Get up..! He's on his way..! Jenny!” she yelled, her body trembling and her eyes starting to fill up with water.

“Run! Run, Bee! Run as fast as you can..!”

Bethany looked up and immediately stood up, running as fast as she could on her heels as the gravel from her heels was thrown to the man's way, making him yell and hiss. The man pointed his gun to her heel and shot her leg as well, making Jenny yell. “NO!”

The young woman fell down the gravel, scarring her chin as she landed on the rocks. Blood started to seep down her cut as she yelled. The man and his henchmen picked up Bethany and Jenny, tossing them into the back of the white van and quickly sped off.

Bethany teared up as Jenny crawled to her side, gently caressing her cheek. “Sshh.. Don't worry, we'll get outta here..”

Jenny tried to get the bullet out of her own leg, causing her to hiss. Her two fingers were trying its best to get the bullets out, but it was only hurting Scout even more. Normally, Medic would have fixed him up.

Bethany saw this and immediately swatted Jenny's hand, “Don't! It's much better if the bullet stays, so no blood will seep out even more!” She sat up, getting Jenny to gently pull out her fingers, and sighed.

“Sorry.. You just sometimes.. Make me feel so stupid, Jen.” The young woman raised an eyebrow in return, before asking, “What? What'd ya mean?”

Bethany backtracked, sighing and shaking her head as she let out a broken chuckle. “Nothing.. Let's just.. Think of how to get out of this situation, okay?”
