Chapter Text
After that conversation me and June had ,I asked her if she could give us a tour of the school.
Why? Cause so much stuff is different and I’d think it would be cool to see every things changed.
“How did you manage to get me to give you a tour?” June says giving me a small stink eye.
“I know I cleared out most of the zombies but there’s still crap down here that I haven’t managed to clear out.”
“You didn’t it cause you couldn’t say no.” I say with the most gremlin grin I can manage.
“You conned me is what you did.” She says
“What me? I would neeever.” I say with no hint of remorse in me
“Should have never asked how could I make it up to you.”
“Well you did and now I get a cool tour of the school!”
“You played me like a fiddle.”
“Whats a fiddle?”
“Sigh.”
———————————————————————
Me and June have been looking all around the school we just left the second grade hall which had three zombies stuck in the roof.
How they got up there is any one’s guess but was really funny.
Then we went to one of the bathrooms and there was a big tentacle in it! It was super weird.
It was all wiggly and gross. The tentacle was all covered in slime and weird black goop.
It was wicked gross. But June threw up at the sight of it.
And that was sick, literally sick. We had to leave the bathroom shortly after.
after that we went straight to the gym and there’s a zombie in the basketball hoop.
Again how does that happen!? Man that guy must have tried to escape from the zombies and got stuck.
Cause how else would he get up there?
“How did he… how did he get up there? That doesn’t make any sense” June said.
Though I think it was more to herself than to me.
“I don’t remember any one who could jump that high at school. Did he just pull him self up there got bite then get stuck?”
“Like how in the world does that even happen?”
“I don’t know, but it’s really funny though” I say.
“Guess you’re right, wish my phone was working, I would love to take a picture of this.”
“I have a camera!” I say. “I always take it with me! So I can take a picture if you want!”
“Oh ya, I forgot you had one. And you have it on you?”
“Yup!” I say as I pull it out of my backpack.”I’ve been taking good care of it, so it’s still working just as good as a got it”.
“Do you remember how it works like I showed you?” She says.
“I do! I press that button then that one then one over here!”
“Do you remember what they’re called?”
“Nope! I don’t remember what any of them are called! Now what kind of pose do ya wanna do for the picture?”
“I’ll tell you later then, and let’s just do a peace sign. It’s simple and easy.”
“Okey dokie! Come on come on!”
“I’m coming, don’t get too close to the zombie. I really don’t want it to bite us.”
“I know, I know. Now get into position and three, two, one…” SNAP!
As the camera started printing the paper out we started walking out of the gym.
“Were you always so hyper?”
“I dunno” I say shrugging my shoulders. “I think I had medicine I had to take but I don’t think any one’s ever gave me any”.
“That’s concerning.”
“Meh, it’s been fine so far.”
“I have a feeling you’re going to get into trouble…often.”
“I am not!” And as soon as I say that I trip and fall over.
“Are you sure?” June says as she helps me up.
“Very” I say dusting my self off.
“Well come on then tiny, we got other places around the school to visit.”
“I’m not tiny!”
“Yes you are. You’re the smallest person I know, you’re absolutely tiny”.
“I am not! I’m big!”
“Sure, to the ants maybe” she says snickering.
“Hey! That ain’t true” I say pouting. “I’ve done a lot of big stuff!”
“That’s true” she says. “You made it to the school, survived three months in the apocalypse. You’ve done a lot.”
“Yup! And I also stabbed a big monster too!”
“You what!?” June says. “Why would you do that?!”
“Cause it was about to eat me! I didn’t wanna be lunch so I staved it with my baseball bat!”
“How did you stab the monster with a baseball bat?” She asked a look a confusion on his face.
“Well it broke actually and got all pointy and splinter-y at the end see?” I say pulling out the bat by the handle from my bag.
It took me a sec to get it since it’s big and my arms are small so I had to hold it with two hands.
“Here it is! The Louisville Slicer!” It was covered in some Dozer guts and monster teeth and all pointy on the end.
“The Louisville Slicer?”
“Yup! Used to be the Louisville Slugger but now it slices stuff and is all pointy you get it.”
“Do you have a weapon Miss. June?”
“Oh I do it’s right…we’re did it go?”
“Did it walk off?”
“Jack it doesn’t have legs” she says looking a little exasperate.
“You’re right, it probably hopped off some were on its pole.”
“Jack please, I’ve lost my weapon.”
“Is it in that place we came from? You know the place with all the mats and blankets and cloths.”
“Ooooh, you mean storage room on the top floor. I probably left it there honestly.”
“Come on squirt let’s go get it.” She says turning around.
“Hey I’m not a squirt!” I say following her.
“Sure you’re not.”
———————————————————————
When we get to the storage room I take a better look at what’s all in it as Miss. June goes looking around.
There’s a table with lots of stuff on it and there’s some wooden chairs too broken and piled up in a Corner near a…is that a furnace?
“Hey Miss . June?” I ask. “Is that a furnace right there?” I say pointing to it.
“Oh uhh ya. It’s the schools old furnace that they used in the winter. It runs on wood and other burnable stuff, so I gathered chairs and wood from outside to burn during the winter.”
“It still works? It looks really old and broken.”
“It should it’ll keep this room warm and a few others, but not the whole school.”
“Actually can you open the furnace for me?” She asks.
“Sure, how do I open it though?”
“Pull the right lever on the side of the furnace up and the left one down the pull them open.”
“Ok” I say as I do what she said. “But won’t these handles get hot?”
“There long enough and built in a way were they won’t. At least the ends of them.”
“Uh ok I guess. But why do we need it open now?”
“I have a feeling it’s going to get cold tonight, and I hate being cold.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Put me in a desert in one hundred degree heat, but don’t put me anywhere that could be cold.”
“Doesn’t Wakefield get cold usually in fall and winter time?”
“Yes and I hate it with a passion.”she says walking to a closet.
“Where is it?” She says going through the closet. “Put some sticks in the furnace please.”
“Ok, have you found your weapon yet by the way?”
“Not yet” she says as she continues rummaging through the closet.
“ you want me to get those broken wooden chair pieces right?”
“Yes please, just pile a few of them in the furnace and I’ll start a small fire.”
“So I guess that means the tour is over then?” I ask Miss. June
“Ehhh, we can start it again tomorrow if you want. But it’s kinda late.”
“That’s ok!” I say as I get some broken wooden chair pieces and put them in the furnace.
“Do you think this is enough sticks?” I ask.
“Uhhh” she says turning around “that’s good for now just gimmi a sec.”
“I can’t fricking find my spear god dang it! Where in the world did I leave it!?”
“Screw it” and once she says that she goes to the furnace and grabs a lighter and a small can of gas and pours a little on the wood and lights it on fire.
“Jack there’s a pot in the room right next to this one there’s a door on the right can you go in there and get a pot please?”
“Uh sure! But why do we need a pot?”
“I’m making dinner, and I need a pot to boil the water over the fire.”
“Sure” I say going to the door. It’s metal and has a small window near the top of it.
Opening the door and walking in the room it’s all relatively normal.
There’s desks all in rows with the teachers desk in the front and there’s still the…
OH MY GOD THERS A SPINY CHAIR! Oh my god this the best thing ever. Once I take Miss. June to the tree house I’m taking this chair with me.
I love these things, like whenever I spin on them I like putting my legs out and then in cause it makes it feel like I’m going faster then slower and it makes me all dizzy and it’s just a lot of fun.
I don’t even notice that I’m making my way to the chair until I’m sitting on it.
I really shouldn’t. Miss June asked me to get a pot.
But the spiny chair though….
A few spins is fine…and like that a spent a few minutes just spinning on the chair.
And those few minutes turned into ten minutes.
The door slams open and in steps in Miss. June…and hey she found her weapon.
And she looks mad. “What the heck are you doing?!”
“Uh..” I say as the chair slowly comes to a halt. “I got distracted by the spiny chair”.
She sighs and pinches her nose. “Get the pot and bring the chair I guess.”
“Sorry Miss. June” I say getting off the chair my head hanging low.
“It’s fine” she says waving her hand. I would’ve done the same thing if I was eight honestly.
“You would’ve? I ask as I’m making my way to a small pile of pots that’s on a blanket.
“Oh absolutely, I loved to spine on those things when I was slightly younger”.
“Yup, now come on and get a lot and that chair, I’ve got the fire going and the water ready.”
“You got it!” And with that she goes back Into the other room and I got pick up a decently sized pot and put it on the chair and start rolling it to the door.
Getting to the other room and then closing the door behind me there’s a wildfire of a fire in the furnace going.
“Whoah…it’s so warm! I can feel it from here!”
“Thanks kiddo” she says.
“Now hand that pot over I wanna get started with dinner.”
“Okie dokie, here ya go!” I say handing her the pot.
“Thank you” she says. “Now for the water…”
She picks up a really big bottle of water and starts to pour it in the pot until it’s full.
Then once it’s full she puts it into the furnace near the top of the fire.
“There we go. Once that’s heated up we can pour the water into these bowls right here.”
Looking at her side there’s two bowls with dry noodles and yellow powder in them.
“Miss. June? What’s that yellow powder that’s in the bowls?”
“It’s just chicken powder for the flavor” she says. “Wouldn’t be all that good to eat plain noodles now would it?”
“I mean…it doesn’t sound terrible. It could have BBQ flavor and I hate that flavor.”
I could hear her gasp at that, her mouth was hanging open.
“You hate BBQ!?” She says.
“Uhh…ya? I don’t see the appeal. I hate the way it tastes and all that.”
“That is a crime. How, why? How could you hate BBQ? It’s one of the best things ever!”
“It tastes weird…it tastes like mangos mixed with ranch.”
“Mangos mixed with ranch?” She says with absolute confusion on her face.
“How the heck do you know what that tastes like? What did ya do, put ranch on a whole mango and eat it?”
“Well not exactly…I mixed em up and drank it.”
“You…oh that’s gross.”
“I know….I thought it was a good combo when I was making it but, it really didn’t go well once I tried it”.
“I-I don’t even know what to say to that.”
“I thought it was taste good but it didn’t” I say as I sit next to her by the furnace.
She snorted and started to chuckle.
“Well it seems like your one who likes to try new things arnt ya?”
“I am. I like seeing new places and eating new stuff. Oh and I love trying all sorts of stuff.”
“I actually tried to cook one time. Wasn’t really good at it but it was fun.”
“Really? What were you trying to make?” She asks.
“I was trying to make scrambled eggs…I burnt the eggs to a crisp. And that’s sucks I was in the mood for eggs too.”
“Well tell ya what, I’m a decent cook my self. If we find some fresh eggs I’ll make you some.”
“Wait really?” I say looking at her with wide eyes.
“Of course!” She says with a smile. “I don’t know how to make every thing but I do know how to cook a lot of different stuff!”
“YOUR THE BEST MISS. JUNE!” I say as I give her a big hug.
“thanks kid” she says giving me a hug back.
“Now I think that waters boiling so let’s pour it into these bowls.”
