Hi, Farah
Presumably you have seen the mess that started yesterday on Twitter. If not, the tl;dr is that an account on Reddit that contained some potential evidence about the timeline of our relationship was unearthed and shared on Twitter. Then, late last night, one of Ilya’s former teammates anonymously posted something else on Reddit that kind of backed it all up. There’s no proof that it’s one of his teammates, but we’re confident that it is. The stuff said in the post is true, and nobody outside of the Raiders’ roster at that time would know about it.
It feels a bit silly to even be asking this about something that is essentially just Twitter drama, but is there something we should be doing? Sierra Grace Harrison has posted yet another invasive article about us, and there seems to be a lot of posts on Twitter and Reddit trying to tear the whole thing apart. We’d like to tread as carefully as we can.
Any advice would be a huge help. Sorry for bothering you so early in the morning.

First of all, let me say that I’m really sorry this is happening to you boys again. The internet is unfortunately very good at breaking boundaries like this, and very bad at learning from its mistakes. If either of you need to talk about how this whole thing is making you feel, please don’t hesitate to reach out for a call. You’re never a bother.
As for what you can do, the way I see it is that you have a few options:
- Nothing. Please remember that, above all else, you don’t owe anyone any personal information. You don’t have to address anything, and you can continue posting as normal if that’s what you want to do.
- Confirm/deny. If you want to respond to the speculation directly, you can. My advice here, though, would be to be honest. Although I can understand wanting to lie to protect your privacy, if this lie ever gets out, it will most likely cause a similar level of backlash, just further in the future. Consider this thoroughly before you act.
- Condemn. We’ll write a statement that condemns the privacy violation without giving anything away. This is the safest option, in my opinion. It shuts down the speculation (as well as the internet ever can be shut down) while keeping your secrets secret. If you want to go this route, let me know and I’ll start working on something you can post.
Please know that, whatever you choose to do, you’ll have my support. It’s up to you both to decide where you’re at and what you’re comfortable with, but there’s no one “correct” answer here. It’s all about personal preference. You’re also both in a much better position now with your current team than you were back in 2021, so please don’t worry too much about the League side of things. The NHL stopped profiting off of your rivalry a long time ago. You don’t have to try to keep the fantasy alive for anyone who’s still clinging onto it.
Hopefully some of this has been helpful to you. I’m going to look into what I can do to get Sierra Grace Harrison to take her article down, if nothing else. Keep in touch, let me know what you boys decide to do.

We’ve talked about it, and we think that, although it’s frustrating that the choice has somewhat been taken out of our hands, Ilya and I would like to just be honest. At the end of the day, we’re both very proud and protective of the relationship we’ve managed to cultivate with our fans online, and we don’t want to let a few bad experiences ruin something good. I think hockey players like us being more open and down to earth is a good step in the right direction to eventually making the sport feel as welcoming for everyone as we’d like it to feel.

I think you boys are exactly what professional hockey needs. In all my years, I’ve never met two players who I’ve felt are better aligned with what it means to be role models. Shane and I met for the first time in 2008, at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan. Our relationship as you know it now started, in one way or another, 2 years later, in the summer of 2010.
This may come as a shock to a lot of people. For many years, our careers were built upon a rivalry that we have always felt was decided for us by our environment, rather than something we developed ourselves. With that being said, every second you have ever seen of either of us on the ice has been real. Shane and I are as passionate about hockey as we are about each other, that much is true. When I check him, when I intercept his passes, when I score more goals than he does, I am doing it with my whole heart. 😉
But to us, personally, our rivalry has always been mostly about motivating one another to be the best versions of ourselves we can possibly be. For a long time, we stood alone together at the top, and turned that feeling of isolation into a game of back and forth that we still play today. If Shane is good at something, I want to be good at it, too. We learn each other’s techniques, we beat each other’s records, we feel each other’s losses and we celebrate each other’s wins. We are very connected, and we have been for a very long time.
We understand that the information coming to light recently has been confusing, surprising, and maybe even painful for some of you, especially fans who have followed our careers since the early days. And maybe you’ll all argue that we could have let it die down itself, and hope that, as is typical of the internet, it wouldn’t be long before something new took its place.
But we have decided to be honest because, at the end of the day, it is important to us to continue doing whatever we can do to keep making hockey a welcoming place for as many people as possible. Rivalries do not all have to be about hatred and bad sportsmanship, they do not have to end in fights. The sooner we put a stop to the idea that hockey is only fun when it is violent, the sooner we will achieve our goal of creating a safe environment for anyone who wants to be a part of the sport we love so much.
It is important to both of us that all of our fans, new and old, know that neither Shane nor I have ever not given it our all on the ice because of one another. We love what we do, and we have become very good, over the last 16 years, at keeping our personal and professional lives separate. We played for 11 years without anyone ever suspecting there was something going on between us. We likely would have played for more, if we’d had the chance.
All this to say that this new information changes nothing. We have enjoyed every second we’ve spent on and off the ice together since the beginning of our careers, and we’ve never been anything but as authentic as we could be.
If you have read all of this, you are a saint. It’s posted on my account, but I think everyone knows that Shane is the one who wrote most of it. ❤️ At the end of the day, I love hockey and I love my husband, and I would never give either of those things anything less than 110% of my time, energy and committment. If you want to question that, I don’t care. I have a beautiful husband and you probably do not. 😉

Love Hollander, love Rozanov. Was a shock to find out they’ve been hiding for so long, but more in a sad way rather than the oddballs crying betrayal over on the bird app. I always enjoyed their rivalry, and now I enjoy their love.
