Summary
What the hell is a "free agent" and why is Ilya Rozanov one at the end of Heated Rivalry? Would Cliff be suspended for that hit on Shane? How many times a season do Montreal and Boston play each other? How is the order of draft picks determined? How do hockey trades work?
All this and more is answered in this guide to how the NHL (and thus maybe the MLH) works! This isn't about the rules of playing hockey, but instead the rules of the league itself. Even the boring bits can become great prompts for fic if you believe in yourself!
If you're writing Hockey RPF, this guide makes sure to point out where the NHL and the fictional book series/show differs, so it still works as a simplified guide for that too!

Summary
Stepping out of the shower, Shane towel dried off and applied his usual skincare, figuring he wouldn’t want to do it later. He walked into their bedroom and noticed his favorite pair of Ilya’s boxers laid out on the bed.
Next to the boxers was a neatly coiled rope. It was black and soft, the kind they used when Ilya would tie Shane for prolonged periods of time. It was an invitation Shane could choose to accept or forego.

Summary
“I am serious, though, you are safe, yes? Drunk at hotel, sitting on balcony, crying over Montreal’s terrible loss?”
It makes sense that Ilya’s mind would go there first. Shane said he was outside. Based on past behavior, the hotel balcony is probably the only place Ilya would expect him to be. He feels a little giddy that he gets to shock him for once.
“I’m at a club, actually.” He has to bite back a self-satisfied smile as he speaks, “With the team. Safe.”
It's quiet for a few moments before Ilya deadpans,
“Very funny joke.”
(or: three days after the breakup with rose, shane gets drunk in boston. it spirals out from there.)

Summary
As a professional athlete, his body is literally built for endurance. It’s kind of part of his job description, really, something that he specifically trains for, to be good at enduring things most people would balk at. What he personally feels about the specifics of that process is secondary to the goal of being the best hockey player he can possibly be.
The thing with Rozanov starts off as something different. Tentatively, Shane had allowed himself to hope that this could become a part of his life not to be endured but enjoyed, maybe. The CCM shoot, the 2011 All Stars game, Shane’s apartment in Montreal the first time Shane had… Well, to say Shane enjoys himself in each case would be an understatement. It had shocked him, how good sex could feel when you wanted to be there. He had almost forgotten what it was like to want something, something other than hockey, until somehow, without any conscious decision on his part, his whole body had been consumed with wanting his arch-rival.
(Or, an autistic Shane Hollander character study that follows the timeline of the show.)

Summary
Ilya has some fun ideas about how to show Shane exactly how good he looks getting fucked.
OR
“Is Polaroid,” Ilya clarifies. “No files, no sharing… very private.”
Hollander swallows, stares a beat longer, and then aggressively doesn’t look anywhere near the camera or Ilya. “Okay. So?”
Ilya thinks, it’s always this. Hollander feints towards something he wants, and Ilya gets it for him, and he offers it up like a toy for a cat. Not too needy, not too blasé, he must twitch it at just the right pace. Here, kitty kitty.
“I would like to take some, see how you look,” Ilya offers oh so casually. “It’s just for fun. You can keep all of them, after. Put them through the shredder. I don’t care.” He cares. The things he’d do to keep one of those photos.
Hollander wets his lips, glances back at the camera, flushes. Then the pounce: “You can leave it on the nightstand.”
