Chapter 4: damage control

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The first rule of doing something you’re not supposed to do is simple.

You don’t get to enjoy the after.

Not really.

Not fully.

Because the second Megan and Yoonchae had separated—after the hallway nearly turned into a disaster zone—reality had hit like a dropped weight.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just… immediate.

Now they were all in the same house.

With the same rules.

Under the same management.

And somehow, everything felt louder even when nobody was speaking.

Megan sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her hands like they belonged to someone else.

Yoonchae had gone quiet down the hall.

Daniela had gone suspiciously quiet in the living room.

Sophia was nowhere to be seen.

Which was somehow the most alarming part.

Because Sophia always knew everything first.

---

Lara found out like Lara always found out things.

Accidentally.

And loudly.

She had just come back from the bathroom, towel half-draped over her shoulder, hair still damp, when she stopped mid-step in the hallway.

Megan was coming out of her room.

Yoonchae was a few steps behind her.

There was a second where nothing happened.

Then Lara looked between them.

Looked again.

Then pointed.

"No."

Megan froze.

Lara’s eyes narrowed.

"Oh my God."

"Don’t," Megan said immediately.

Lara’s mouth slowly opened.

"Oh my GOD."

"Stop."

"You did NOT—"

"Stop talking."

Lara gasped so loudly it echoed.

"I KNEW IT."

"You did not know anything."

"I DID."

"You literally didn’t."

"I FELT IT."

"You felt nothing."

Lara was already smiling.

Already gearing up.

"Oh my God, this is insane. This is actually insane. You guys are—"

Megan didn’t laugh.

Didn’t react.

Just stood there.

Completely still.

That’s when Lara stopped.

Her smile faded slightly.

"Wait."

Silence.

Megan didn’t move.

Yoonchae didn’t move.

Lara lowered her voice.

"Are you okay?"

That question landed differently.

Megan blinked.

Then looked away.

"We’re fine."

But it didn’t sound like fine.

It sounded like something heavier.

Lara’s teasing energy deflated immediately.

"Oh."

A pause.

She looked between them again, slower this time.

"Is this… bad trouble?"

Megan didn’t answer.

Which was answer enough.

Lara swallowed.

"Oh."

Then softer:

"Okay. I won’t say anything."

Yoonchae looked up slightly.

"Lara—"

"No," Lara said quickly, holding up a hand. "No jokes. No teasing. I got it."

She hesitated.

Then added quietly:

"I won’t make it worse."

And then she actually stepped aside.

Let them pass.

No commentary.

No laughter.

Nothing.

Which somehow made everything feel even more serious.

---

Sophia found out first.

Of course she did.

Because Sophia always found things first.

Not because she was loud.

Not because she was nosy.

But because she paid attention in a way that felt unfair.

She was sitting cross-legged on her bed when Yoonchae knocked on her door.

It was soft.

Careful.

Almost like she was trying to decide whether she deserved to enter.

Sophia looked up immediately.

"Come in."

Yoonchae stepped inside.

Closed the door behind her.

Didn’t sit down right away.

That alone told Sophia everything.

"Hey," Sophia said gently.

Yoonchae hesitated.

Then sat on the edge of the bed.

Not facing her fully.

Hands folded tightly in her lap.

That was new.

Yoonchae didn’t do nervous like this.

Not usually.

Sophia softened instantly.

"Okay," she said. "Talk to me."

A pause.

Then Yoonchae’s voice came out smaller than usual.

"I think I did something wrong."

Sophia blinked.

Then leaned forward slightly.

"Did someone hurt you?"

Yoonchae shook her head immediately.

"No."

"Did you hurt someone else?"

Another shake.

"Then it’s not automatically ‘wrong,’ okay?"

That made Yoonchae pause.

Her shoulders lifted slightly with a shaky breath.

Then—

"I kissed Megan."

Silence.

Sophia didn’t react immediately.

Not because she was surprised.

Because she wasn’t.

She just studied Yoonchae’s face carefully.

Waiting.

Yoonchae looked down.

"I wasn’t supposed to. I know we’re not supposed to. I just—"

Her voice cracked slightly.

"I got scared after."

That part made Sophia’s expression shift immediately.

"Scared how?"

Yoonchae’s hands tightened in her lap.

"Because of the rules."

Because of management.

Because of consequences she didn’t have to say out loud.

Sophia nodded slowly.

Then shifted closer.

"Hey," she said softly. "Look at me."

Yoonchae did.

Her eyes were glossy now.

Not full crying yet.

But close.

Very close.

Sophia exhaled gently.

"Are you in trouble right now?"

Yoonchae shook her head.

"Do you regret it?"

A pause.

Then a small, honest shake.

"No."

Sophia smiled slightly.

"Okay."

Yoonchae blinked.

"That’s it?"

"That’s it."

Yoonchae looked confused.

"But—"

Sophia reached out, lightly tapping her knee.

"Listen to me," she said gently. "You’re not the first person in the world to like someone you’re not ‘supposed’ to like."

Yoonchae’s breath hitched slightly.

Sophia continued, calm and steady.

"And you’re definitely not the first person to act on it before your brain caught up."

That made something in Yoonchae’s expression break slightly.

Not in a bad way.

Just… release.

"I’m scared," Yoonchae admitted quietly.

"I know," Sophia said immediately.

And she meant it.

No judgment.

No shock.

Just understanding.

"You’re not in trouble with me," Sophia added. "Okay?"

That did it.

Yoonchae’s eyes filled immediately.

She tried to stop it.

Failed.

Tears slipped down before she could catch them.

"I didn’t mean to make everything complicated," she whispered.

Sophia shifted forward and gently pulled her into a side hug.

"Hey," she said softly. "You didn’t make anything worse."

Yoonchae shook her head slightly.

"I should’ve stopped it."

Sophia shook her head back.

"No."

A pause.

Then softer:

"No, you shouldn’t have."

That made Yoonchae cry harder.

Quietly.

Not dramatic.

Just overwhelmed.

Sophia held her there without rushing her.

Without fixing it too fast.

Just letting her feel it.

These maknaes, she thought quietly.

Always carrying the world like it’s theirs alone.

---

Megan was harder.

Not because she was less emotional.

But because she was pretending not to be.

Sophia found her in the hallway later that night.

Standing near the kitchen.

Staring at nothing.

Sophia didn’t announce herself.

Just stepped in front of her.

"Megan."

Megan startled slightly.

Then immediately straightened.

"I’m fine."

Sophia gave her a look.

"That was fast."

"I’m fine."

"Megan."

Silence.

Megan looked away first.

Sophia sighed.

"You know I know you’re not fine, right?"

That did it.

Megan’s expression cracked.

Just slightly.

"I messed up," she said quietly.

Sophia shook her head immediately.

"No."

Megan frowned.

"You didn’t hear what I did."

"I did."

A pause.

Then Sophia softened her voice.

"Sit down."

Megan hesitated.

Then did.

Slowly.

Like her body was heavier than usual.

Sophia sat next to her on the floor.

Quiet for a moment.

Then:

"Do you regret it?"

Megan’s laugh came out broken.

"I don’t know how not to."

That hit differently.

Sophia exhaled slowly.

"That’s not regret," she said gently. "That’s fear."

Megan didn’t respond.

Her eyes were fixed on the floor.

"I don’t want her to get in trouble," she said quietly.

Sophia nodded.

"I know."

A pause.

Then Megan’s voice cracked slightly.

"And I don’t want it to be taken away."

That was the real sentence.

The real fear.

Sophia didn’t interrupt.

Just listened.

Then she said quietly:

"You’re not the first person to fall in love with someone in a group."

Megan let out a shaky breath.

"I didn’t plan it."

"Nobody does."

Silence again.

Then Megan finally looked at her.

Eyes glassy now.

"Is this going to ruin everything?"

Sophia didn’t answer immediately.

Because she was thinking.

Not about rules.

Not about management.

But about people.

About Yoonchae crying quietly in her room.

About Megan sitting here trying not to fall apart.

About how both of them had looked like they were holding something too big for their hands.

Finally, she said:

"It depends on what you do next."

Megan swallowed.

Sophia added, softer:

"But you’re not alone in it."

That was the part that made Megan break.

Just a little.

Not dramatic.

Just honest.

She covered her face with one hand.

And breathed out:

"I hate this."

Sophia gently bumped her shoulder.

"No," she corrected softly. "You hate that it matters."

Megan didn’t answer.

But she didn’t disagree either.

And somewhere down the hall—

Yoonchae was still quietly crying in Sophia’s room.

And for once—

Nobody was joking about it.

-

Management didn’t arrive like villains.

That would’ve been easier.

No dramatic music.

No slammed doors.

No obvious warning signs.

Just an email at 7:42 AM.

Mandatory meeting. Today. All members. Conference room. No exceptions.

That was it.

No tone.

No warmth.

No room for interpretation.

And somehow that made it worse.

---

The conference room felt too bright.

Too clean.

Too quiet in a way that made every small movement feel like noise.

Megan sat with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

Yoonchae sat two seats away.

That distance felt like a continent.

Neither of them looked at each other.

Not even once.

Across the table, Lara kept shifting like she wanted to say something but didn’t trust herself.

Daniela looked unusually still.

Sophia looked calm—but in the way someone looks calm when they’re already doing damage control in their head.

The door opened.

Management entered.

Two people.

Neutral expressions.

Tablets in hand.

No greetings beyond a polite nod.

Megan’s stomach dropped immediately.

---

They spoke for a long time.

Too long.

About expectations.

About contracts.

About image.

About boundaries.

Words like “conduct” and “representation” and “breach of agreement” floated through the room like slow-moving smoke.

Megan stopped hearing individual sentences halfway through.

All she could hear was the weight of it.

Beside her, Yoonchae’s knee bounced once.

Then stopped.

Then started again.

Megan noticed anyway.

Of course she did.

She kept her eyes forward.

Kept breathing steady.

Kept pretending her chest wasn’t tightening.

Then one of them said it.

“Given recent behavior, we need confirmation of understanding and compliance moving forward.”

Silence.

A pause.

Then—

Yoonchae stood up.

So suddenly the chair scraped loudly against the floor.

Every head turned.

She didn’t look at anyone.

Not management.

Not the group.

Not Megan.

Her voice was steady at first.

Too steady.

A pause.

Then—

“I need a second.”

Megan’s head snapped up.

“Yoonchae—”

But she was already walking.

Fast.

Controlled.

Not running.

Not yet.

The door closed behind her with a soft click.

Too soft.

That was the worst part.

---

The room didn’t move for a second.

Then management continued talking like nothing had happened.

Like someone hadn’t just walked out with shaking hands.

Megan couldn’t hear them anymore.

Her chair suddenly felt too small.

Her breathing too loud.

Her thoughts too fast.

And all she could think was:

She’s mad.

Not scared.

Not confused.

Mad.

At me.

---

She didn’t wait for permission.

She stood up.

Chair scraping back sharply.

“I need a minute.”

No response.

She was already out the door.

---

The hallway felt colder.

She saw Yoonchae near the end of it.

Standing by the window.

Arms crossed tightly.

Jaw set.

Not crying.

Not shaking.

Just… tense.

Megan slowed down as she approached.

“Hey,” she said carefully.

No response.

Megan tried again.

“Yoonchae.”

Still nothing.

She stepped closer.

“Talk to me.”

That did it.

Yoonchae turned.

Fast.

Eyes sharp.

Voice immediately cutting.

“No.”

Megan froze.

That wasn’t what she expected.

“I just—”

“You just what?” Yoonchae snapped.

Megan blinked.

“I wanted to check on you.”

Yoonchae laughed once.

Short.

No humor in it.

“Don’t.”

Silence hit like a wall.

Megan swallowed.

“Are you okay?”

Yoonchae’s expression tightened.

“No.”

That honesty landed harder than anything else.

Megan stepped forward slightly.

“I can fix this—”

“You can’t.”

“I can try—”

“You shouldn’t have done it.”

That stopped her.

Completely.

Megan’s voice dropped.

“I know.”

Yoonchae’s eyes flickered.

“And I still did it.”

A pause.

Then she exhaled sharply.

“You make everything feel easy,” she said, sharper now. “That’s the problem.”

Megan blinked.

“What?”

“You make it feel like it’s fine,” Yoonchae continued, voice rising slightly now. “Like nothing has consequences. Like we can just—just do things and it’ll be okay.”

Megan’s chest tightened.

“That’s not what I—”

“Yes it is!” Yoonchae snapped.

The hallway went quiet.

Even the air felt like it paused.

Yoonchae shook her head once.

“You’re always like that,” she said, voice cracking just slightly now. “Funny. Calm. Like nothing can actually touch you.”

Megan stared at her.

“That’s not fair.”

Yoonchae laughed again.

This time it broke a little.

“Nothing about this is fair.”

Silence.

Megan stepped forward again.

“I didn’t mean to make it harder for you.”

Yoonchae’s eyes flashed.

“Then why did you do it?”

That question didn’t have a clean answer.

Not one she could say out loud.

So she didn’t.

And that silence was enough.

Yoonchae nodded once like she already knew.

“Yeah,” she said quietly. “Exactly.”

Then she brushed past her.

Megan reached out instinctively.

“Wait—”

But Yoonchae pulled away.

Fast.

Sharp.

“No.”

That single word hit differently now.

Final.

Megan stopped.

Her hand dropped.

And she just stood there as Yoonchae walked back toward the meeting room alone.

---

When Yoonchae re-entered, the room went quiet for half a second.

She sat down again.

Perfect posture.

Expression controlled.

Like nothing had happened.

Like she hadn’t just broken in half in a hallway and stitched herself back together in under a minute.

Megan didn’t follow right away.

She stayed in the hallway.

Breathing uneven.

Staring at the closed door.

Trying to hold herself together.

Trying and failing.

And then—

It hit her all at once.

Not slowly.

Not gently.

Just all at once.

The meeting.

The rules.

Yoonchae’s voice.

The look in her eyes.

The distance.

The “no.”

And suddenly Megan couldn’t breathe properly anymore.

Her vision blurred.

She pressed a hand to her mouth.

It didn’t help.

Another breath.

Worse.

Her shoulders shook once.

Then again.

And before she could stop it—

She broke.

Right there in the hallway.

Silent at first.

Then not silent.

Her back hit the wall as she slid down it, hands covering her face completely now.

She wasn’t even trying to be quiet anymore.

It didn’t matter.

Because the only thing louder than her crying was the fact that Yoonchae had just looked at her like she didn’t know her anymore.

And that was the part she couldn’t fix.

No matter how funny she used to be.

No matter how easy she tried to make everything feel.

None of it mattered in that moment.

Just the distance.

Just the silence.

Just the word that kept repeating in her head like a verdict.

No.

-

The hallway didn’t care that Megan was falling apart in it.

It stayed the same.

Bright lights. White walls. Quiet air-conditioning that hummed like nothing important was happening at all.

Megan was barely aware of any of it.

Her back pressed against the wall, knees pulled in slightly, hands covering her face like that could somehow stop everything from being real.

It didn’t.

Her breath kept catching in uneven pieces.

Too fast.

Too messy.

Like her body had stopped listening to her entirely.

“No, no, no…” she kept repeating under her breath, like repetition could rewind time.

It couldn’t.

The door to the meeting room stayed closed.

That made it worse.

Because inside it was still happening.

Inside it, Yoonchae was still in there.

Inside it, everything was still moving forward without her.

And Megan couldn’t follow.

Not yet.

Not like this.

---

Then the door opened.

Yoonchae came out first.

Fast.

Controlled.

Face blank in a way that didn’t feel calm—it felt sealed.

She didn’t look left.

Didn’t look right.

Didn’t look down the hallway.

Didn’t look at anything.

Not even where Megan was sitting.

She just walked.

Straight past.

Like Megan wasn’t there.

Like she had already been erased from the room behind her.

Megan’s breath hitched harder.

She tried to stand.

Failed halfway.

Her hand pressed to the wall for balance, but her legs didn’t cooperate.

“Yoonchae—”

It came out broken.

Too quiet.

Too late.

Yoonchae didn’t stop.

Didn’t turn.

Didn’t react at all.

Just kept walking.

And that was the moment Megan completely lost it again.

Her voice cracked into something unusable.

“Please—”

Nothing.

Gone.

The hallway swallowed the sound.

Yoonchae disappeared around the corner.

---

Sophia and Daniela came out next.

Their energy was different immediately.

Tense.

Focused.

Sophia’s eyes scanned the hallway instantly.

“Yoonchae!” she called.

No answer.

Daniela started moving after her.

“She went that way.”

They both turned sharply, ready to follow.

But then Sophia stopped.

Mid-step.

Her gaze landed somewhere lower in the hallway.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Oh my god.”

Daniela slowed.

“What—”

Then she saw it.

Megan.

Collapsed against the wall.

Crying so hard she could barely form anything coherent anymore.

Not just tears.

Full breakdown.

Shoulders shaking.

Face hidden.

Breathing broken into fragments.

Sophia’s entire posture shifted.

“Lara,” she said immediately, voice tight.

Daniela already understood.

“Go,” she said, moving toward the corridor after Yoonchae.

Sophia hesitated just half a second longer.

Then followed Daniela.

Running after Yoonchae down the hall.

Leaving the space open.

Leaving Megan behind for one moment too long.

---

And then Lara appeared.

Of course she did.

She rounded the corner, still half distracted, still mid-sentence about something she’d clearly been saying before she saw the scene.

Then she stopped.

Completely.

“…Megan?”

No answer.

Because Megan couldn’t answer.

She tried.

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out except a broken inhale that turned into another sob.

Lara’s expression dropped instantly.

All humor gone.

All teasing gone.

Just alarm.

“Oh my—”

She rushed forward immediately.

“Hey, hey, hey—what happened?”

Megan shook her head violently, but it didn’t mean anything.

It wasn’t a refusal.

It was just too much.

Too overwhelming.

Her hands pressed harder over her face like she could physically hold herself together.

“I can’t—” she tried.

It broke halfway.

Lara crouched in front of her instantly.

“Okay. Okay. Breathe. Look at me, okay?”

Megan tried.

She really did.

But her body wasn’t cooperating.

Her breath kept stuttering.

Her words kept collapsing.

“I messed it up,” she managed to choke out.

Lara froze slightly.

“What?”

Megan shook her head again, harder.

“I messed it up I messed it up I messed it up—”

“Hey,” Lara said quickly, voice softer now. “No. No, you didn’t. You’re okay. You’re—”

“I can’t fix it,” Megan interrupted suddenly, voice breaking into something sharp and raw. “She looked at me like—like I—”

Her voice gave out completely.

She couldn’t finish it.

Her throat closed up.

Lara shifted closer without hesitation.

“Okay. Okay, listen to me.”

Megan tried to inhale.

Failed.

Another sob cut through her instead.

Lara didn’t flinch.

Didn’t joke.

Didn’t fill the space with noise like she usually would.

She just stayed there.

Right in front of her.

Steady.

“I don’t know what happened,” Lara said quietly, “but you’re not alone right now, okay?”

Megan shook her head again, but it wasn’t disagreement.

It was helplessness.

“I can’t—” she tried again, voice cracking badly now. “I can’t breathe.”

“I know,” Lara said immediately. “I’ve got you. Just—just breathe with me, okay?”

Megan nodded weakly.

It didn’t work at first.

Her breath kept catching.

Her chest kept tightening.

But Lara stayed there.

Not moving.

Not pushing.

Just talking softly until the rhythm slowly, barely, started to come back.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

Megan’s hands dropped slightly from her face, but her eyes were still red, still unfocused, still overwhelmed.

“I didn’t mean it,” she whispered.

Lara shook her head.

“I know.”

Megan swallowed hard.

“It just—she left and she didn’t even look at me.”

Lara went quiet for a second.

Then carefully:

“Yoonchae?”

Megan nodded, another tear slipping down.

Lara exhaled slowly through her nose.

“Okay,” she said softly. “Okay… that makes sense.”

Megan looked up at that immediately, panicked.

“No—don’t say that like it’s—like it’s okay—”

“I’m not saying it’s okay,” Lara interrupted gently. “I’m saying I get why it hurts.”

That landed differently.

Megan’s breathing stuttered again.

“I didn’t think she’d be mad at me,” she whispered.

Lara hesitated.

Then said honestly:

“Yeah. I think she is.”

That honesty hit hard.

Megan flinched slightly like it physically hurt.

“I know,” Lara added quickly, softer now. “But that doesn’t mean it’s over. It just means it’s… really messy right now.”

Megan didn’t respond.

Couldn’t.

Her eyes dropped again.

Her voice came out small.

“I don’t know how to fix it.”

Lara stayed crouched in front of her.

“Not tonight,” she said quietly. “Tonight you just breathe.”

Megan shook her head slightly.

But she didn’t argue.

Because she didn’t have the energy left for anything except existing in pieces.

And somewhere down the hall—

The meeting room was still open.

The group was still fractured.

And Yoonchae had walked out of Megan’s sight without once looking back.

Which was the part that kept echoing in her head the loudest of all.

-

The ride back felt too short.

That was the problem.

No matter how much silence filled the car, it still ended.

Still pulled them back to the same place.

The same rooms.

The same air.

The same unresolved everything.

Megan didn’t speak the entire time.

Not because she couldn’t.

Because she didn’t trust what would come out if she did.

Lara sat beside her, quieter than usual, hands folded, occasionally glancing over like she was checking Megan was still there and not just emotionally evaporating in real time.

When they finally arrived, Megan got out first.

Too fast.

Like staying in the car one second longer would make everything worse.

Maybe it would have.

---

The dorm was too normal.

That was the cruel part.

The lights were warm.

The hallway smelled faintly like detergent and snacks.

Someone had left a hoodie on the couch.

A charger was dangling off the armrest.

Life continuing like nothing had cracked open earlier in the day.

Megan stepped inside and stopped for half a second.

Then kept walking.

Straight past the living room.

She didn’t look left.

Didn’t look right.

But she felt it anyway.

The presence.

Three people on the couch.

Silence that was already waiting for her.

Daniela.

Sophia.

Yoonchae.

All of them there.

All of them aware.

Megan kept walking anyway.

But it didn’t matter.

Because she was not subtle.

Not even a little.

Her eyes were red.

Her face was still blotchy.

Her breathing still uneven in that way that hadn’t fully recovered yet.

She didn’t say a word.

Just passed through like a shadow that hadn’t figured out where it belonged yet.

The room went still.

Nobody called her name.

Nobody followed.

But the silence after she disappeared down the hall was heavier than anything said out loud.

---

Lara came in a few seconds later.

She didn’t pause.

Didn’t soften her steps.

She just walked into the living room and stopped in front of them.

That alone made Sophia sit up slightly.

Daniela already looked tense.

Yoonchae didn’t move.

But her hands were folded tightly in her lap.

Too tightly.

Lara looked at all of them for a second.

Then exhaled.

“Okay,” she said quietly.

Nobody spoke.

She glanced toward the hallway where Megan had gone.

Then back.

“She’s not okay.”

Sophia’s expression tightened immediately.

“We saw her.”

Lara nodded.

“She’s worse than that.”

That made Daniela go still.

“What happened?”

Lara hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then:

“Yoonchae left the meeting first.”

Silence.

Yoonchae’s jaw tightened slightly.

Lara continued carefully.

“And she didn’t look back.”

That landed.

Hard.

Yoonchae’s fingers curled slightly against her own palm.

Lara didn’t look away from her.

“She’s not mad at you for being mad,” Lara added softly. “She’s just… really hurt.”

Yoonchae’s expression flickered.

Just for a second.

Then closed again.

“That’s not my problem,” she said quietly.

The room went still.

Sophia’s eyes moved toward her immediately.

“Yoonchae—”

But Yoonchae didn’t look at her.

Didn’t soften.

Didn’t explain.

Just repeated, a little sharper this time:

“I said what I said.”

Lara nodded slowly.

“I know.”

That calm response made something in Yoonchae shift slightly.

Like she expected pushback.

But Lara wasn’t giving her that.

Not yet.

Instead Lara just continued.

“She cried in the hallway.”

That changed the air.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough that Daniela stopped moving entirely.

Sophia’s expression softened instantly.

Yoonchae’s face didn’t change at first.

But her eyes did.

Just slightly.

Lara watched her carefully.

“She couldn’t breathe properly,” she added quietly. “I had to stay with her for a while before she could even stand up.”

A pause.

Then, softer:

“She thought you were gone for good.”

That one hit differently.

Yoonchae looked away for the first time.

But her voice stayed firm.

“I didn’t mean to hurt her.”

Lara nodded.

“I know.”

A beat.

Then Lara added honestly:

“But you did.”

Silence.

No one interrupted it.

No one softened it.

Yoonchae’s shoulders rose slightly with a controlled breath.

“I was angry,” she said flatly.

“I know.”

“She made everything worse.”

“I know.”

“I can’t just pretend it’s fine.”

“I know.”

Lara didn’t argue.

Just let the space exist.

Then she said quietly:

“She knows you’re angry.”

That made Yoonchae’s eyes flicker again.

“But she also knows you care.”

A pause.

Yoonchae’s jaw tightened.

“That doesn’t change anything.”

Lara shook her head slightly.

“No,” she agreed. “It doesn’t.”

That honesty hung there for a second.

Then Lara added, softer:

“But it explains why she’s falling apart right now.”

Yoonchae looked down at her hands.

For the first time, something in her expression loosened—just slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Not resolution.

Just… conflict.

---

Down the hall, Megan was sitting on the edge of her bed.

Door closed.

Hands still shaking slightly.

Trying not to replay the hallway over and over again.

Not looking at her phone.

Not moving.

Just existing in a body that felt too loud.

Every few seconds, she’d inhale sharply like she still couldn’t believe it happened.

Then stop.

Then try again.

And fail again.

Because no matter how many times she replayed it—

It still ended the same way.

Yoonchae walking away.

No look back.

No pause.

Just gone.

And that was the part she couldn’t undo.

Not with jokes.

Not with charm.

Not with anything that used to make things feel lighter.

Just gone.

And somewhere in the living room—

Yoonchae finally leaned back against the couch.

Still tense.

Still angry.

But quieter now.

Less certain.

More human.

And Lara, watching both of them from opposite ends of the same apartment, exhaled slowly.

Because this wasn’t over.

Not even close.

It was just the part where everyone finally realized how real it had become.
