Chapter Text
The silence inside the ICU is heavier than the static dying on the radio. Max stands frozen, the heavy receiver slipping from her numb fingers and clattering against the linoleum. Six miles away, Lucas is gone, pulled into the bleeding sky of the Upside Down. Hopper doesn't waste a second. His voice cracking like a whip through terror.
Hopper: "Nancy, Joyce, get the kids into the hallway. Now!" He moves toward the window. But the window doesn't shatter. Instead, the glass begins to sweat. Thick, black droplets of moisture bubble against the pane, and the bright fluorescent lights of the hospital hum, flicker, and die. In the sudden dark, a deep, rhythmic thrumming vibrates through the floorboards—the unmistakable heartbeat of Vecna.
Mike: "He isn't running," Mike’s voice is hollow as he stares at the wall. The wallpaper is beginning to blister, rotting away to reveal the pulsing, vine-choked tissue of the Upside Down beneath it.
Mike: "He's merging them. The two worlds. He’s finishing it." Max doesn't run into the hallway. She lunges forward, grabbing Hopper’s heavy canvas jacket.
Max: "He took Lucas to the Creel house," She says, her tears completely dry now, replaced by a cold, sharp fury.
Max; "That’s where he keeps his trophies. That's where he took me. We go there, or Lucas dies." Hopper looks from Max’s fiercely determined eyes to Mike and Will, who are already struggling to their feet, refusing to be left behind. He gives a single, grim nod.
Hopper: "Load up." The drive through Hawkins feels like driving through an apocalypse. The massive red rifts tearing through the town are widening, spilling blinding crimson light and thick, ash-like spores into the atmosphere. When the rusted hospital blazer skids to a halt in front of the abandoned Creel house, the structure looks less like a building and more like a monstrous corpse, draped in writhing, giant vines. Dustin is already there. His bike lay twisted in the overgrown grass, his hands bloodied from clawing at the front door. He spins around as Hopper’s headlights cut through the fog, throwing himself into Mike’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
Dustin: "I couldn't stop it," He chokes out.
Dustin: "The hand... it just reached through the sky..."
Nancy: “We stop it now," Nancy steps out of the car, her gun leveled at the rotting front porch. They move into the house as a single unit. The grand staircase is covered in a thick carpet of living vines that twitch at the sound of their boots. Up into the attic they climb, where the air grows so thick with the smell of sulfur and old blood that it becomes hard to breathe. When they reach the attic door, the horror of Vecna’s final play lay bare. Lucas is suspended in the center of the room, held aloft not by psychic force this time, but by a web of thick, pulsating vines that grow directly out of the ceiling. His eyes are closed, his face deathly pale. Below him, standing in the center of a massive, swirling vortex of red energy, is Vecna. His scarred, skinless form glistens in the crimson light, his elongated left hand twitching in sync with Lucas's heartbeat.
Vecna: "Ah," His voice booms, echoing inside their minds rather than the room.
Vecna: "The broken pieces return to the shelf."
Max: "Let him go!" She screams, stepping past Hopper's outstretched arm.
Vecna: "He is already gone, Maxine," He hisses, turning his milky, lidless eyes toward her.
Vecna: “His mind is a beautiful cage. I am simply rearranging the bars. With his death, the final gate opens completely. Your world will burn, and you will all be together in the dark."
Hopper: "Not today," He raises his revolver and fires three consecutive shots directly into Vecna's chest. The heavy rounds tear into the creature's flesh, black fluid spraying against the wooden beams. Vecna stumbles back, letting out a guttural roar of annoyance. Instantly, the vines on the floor come alive, whipping upward to bind Hopper’s legs, slamming him hard against the wall. Nancy fires her shotgun, blasting off a portion of Vecna’s shoulder, but the vines are already regenerating his flesh.
Dustin: "Mike! Will!" He dodges a sweeping vine as he sprints toward the corner of the room.
Dustin: "The Walkman! Lucas's backpack is over there!” Dustin lunges over a pulsing cluster of tendrils, grabbing the battered yellow tape player from the floorboards. He slams a cassette inside—the mixtape Lucas made him for the road—and looks up at Lucas's suspended body.
Dustin: "I can't reach him!" He screams. Lucas is ten feet in the air.
Max: "Give it to me!" She snatches the Walkman from Dustin’s hands. She doesn't look for a way up; instead, she looks directly at Vecna, who is currently pinning Nancy to the floor with his telekinetic grip.
Max: "Hey! One-Eye!" Her voice cuts through the chaos.
Max: "You want a trophy? Come and take me!" Vecna pauses. He turns his head slowly, a grotesque grin spreading across his mutated face.
Vecna: "You offer yourself willingly? How poetic." The psychic hammer strikes Max instantly. Her vision instantly goes black, the sounds of the attic vanishing as she is violently dragged into the red smoke of Vecna’s mind-scape. She wakes up standing in the shattered, floating remnants of the Creel house attic, deep within Vecna's subconscious. A few yards away, Lucas is chained to a phantom pillar of stone, his eyes rolled back, screaming silently. Vecna towers over him, his massive hand raised to strike.
Vecna: "You cannot save him, Maxine," His voice echoes, stepping toward her.
Max: "I don't need to save him," Her hands are trembling as she holds up the phantom image of the yellow Walkman she has carried into the trance with her.
Max: "We save each other." With a defiant grin, Max jams her thumb onto the play button. In the physical world, Dustin has managed to throw the headphones up, catching them perfectly around Lucas’s neck just as Max entered the trance. The audio explodes. It isn't just a song; it is a wall of sound—the driving, triumphant synth chords of their shared youth. The music tears through Vecna’s mind-scape like a hurricane, fracturing the red fog. The stone pillars begin to crack and crumble.
Vecna: "No!" He roars, clutching his head as the melody tears at his psychic connection.
Vecna: "This world is mine!" Outside, in the real attic, Will Byers closes his eyes. He feels the cold tingle at the back of his neck change from fear to fire. He grabs a dropped iron fire poker from the floor, his eyes snapping open with a golden intensity.
Will: "He's weak!" His voice is carrying the collective weight of every year he has been hunted.
Will: "Now!" Will sprints forward, driving the iron rod directly through Vecna’s throat, pinning the monster to the central wooden pillar of the attic. Nancy scrambles to her feet, reloading with steady fingers, and empties three more shotgun shells directly into Vecna's face. Inside the mind-scape, Vecna shrieks as his physical form is mutilated. The chains holding Lucas shatter into dust. Lucas falls forward, coughing violently, his eyes snapping back to reality as the dark veil lifts from his mind. Max catches him in her arms, holding him tight against the collapsing red sky.
Max: "I've got you," she sobs into his shoulder.
Max: "I've got you." With a final, deafening screech that shakes the foundations of Hawkins, Vecna's physical body bursts into a brilliant explosion of white-hot sparks, dissolving into ash that scatters into the wind. The heavy, pulsing heartbeat in the room stops instantly. The vines holding Lucas up wither and die, dropping both him and Max gently onto the attic floorboards. Dustin and Mike throw themselves over their friends, creating a chaotic pile of tears, laughter, and bruised limbs. The deep red rifts snaking through the town outside began to glow a dim, harmless amber, the dark smoke dissipating to reveal a clear, star-lit sky. The modern world and the Upside Down are separate once more, the door slammed shut and locked from the inside. Lucas blinks up at the ruined roof, his throat raw, but his smile bright. He looks at Max, his hand finding hers in the dark.
Lucas: "Did you... did you hear it?" He whispers, his voice cracking. Max squeezes his hand, pulling him close as the first light of dawn begins to peek through the shattered attic windows.
Max: "Every single note,” She whispers.
Max: “Welcome home."
