The light you gave me

Chapter 2: But I always dig up bones in your sympathy

Chapter Text

Pyro… didn’t know quite a lot of things. Like why things kept catching on fire around him or why he always felt too warm- Or why at nearly five years old he’d suddenly been dropped in the red kingdom with nothing to his name except for the clothes he’d been dropped in. Oh- Or who their parents were! That was a big one. One which they had…. The least hope of answering.

They did know one thing for sure though.

Jack Von Pyroscythe loved his kingdom. Absolutely loved it. With all of their heart. It had taken in a random four-year-old without hesitation and with open arms. A kingdom of outcasts and misfits and those who simply didn’t belong. That’s what they had called themselves. And there wasn’t a day where Pyro felt like he didn’t belong. Because this place? This place was his home.

✧ ✧ ✧

A blue kingdom knight. The newest one. That was supposedly who he was meant to be looking for. Someone who the blue kingdom had sent to negotiate a peace. A temporary one because it would only last as long as Shan and Cam were on the throne.

Both monarchs wanted a temporary peace at the very least….

✧ ✧ ✧

Pyro didn’t hear the knight approach. Or even his footsteps at all. He was silent. Completely unlike Pyro who people often accused of deliberately stomping loudly everywhere. To be honest, those people might have a point as everyone tended to hear them before they saw them.

The knight wore silver armour with dark blue clothes underneath (Pyro wasn't sure what the technical term for it was), one of the few blue kingdom members who actually wore blue (Quite a lot of them wore red for whatever reason. Pyro didn't understand why but who was he to question their choices). He had his helmet off and carried it under their arm. Unlike Pyro, who never cut his hair neatly and just hacked at it with a sword when it got too long until it was a good length, the knight’s dark hair was neatly and evenly cut and had a streak of silvery white running through it.

He looked Pyro up and down with an incredibly unimpressed expression. His eyes were an odd colour, dark brown with flecks of yellowy gold. That didn’t make Pyro think they were any less breath taking.

Pyro bowed, despite how annoying it was to do in armour. “It is truly an honour to-” The knight began walking in the middle of Pyro’s sentence. Pyro immediately got out of the bow and tried to follow them. It was deceptively hard however as despite being shorter than him, they walked incredibly fast and he practically had to run to catch up.

“As I was saying, it’s an honour to meet you.” Pyro was already starting to feel out of breath, despite not walking for very long. “Jack Von Pyroscythe. Sir Pyroscythe. Knight of the red kingdom. He/They.” They smiled in what they hoped was a charming way.

The knight looked at Pyro like he was a piece of dirt he’d scraped off of his shoe.

“What about you?” They tried.

He pursed his lips slightly and sighed. “Abolish R. Veylocke. He/Him. Sir Veylocke. If you give me a nickname because you think it’s cutesy, let me inform you that I have multiple sharp objects in me and I will not hesitate to use them to cause you bodily harm.”

Pyro’s gaze instinctively drifted to Abolish’s armour. He didn’t carry a large heavy sword like Owain or Nom or a spear like Graecie and Bek. Instead, he had a dagger strapped to his side, too small and light to be his proper weapon, and a bow and quiver of arrows on his back. It didn’t really fit the fact that he was supposedly a knight. Bow and arrows was more of a rogue thing.

“So… The peace treaty?” Abolish prompted. Pyro didn’t realise they’d been staring until Abolish gave them a dirty look.

“Yes- The peace negotiations.” Pyro nodded enthusiastically to cover up the fact that they had definitely been staring. “Cam says that he doesn’t want everyone in the red kingdom at the blue kingdom’s throats all the time. If two members of different kingdoms have a dispute they only get the monarchs involved and try to make a rational decision based off the evidence both of them give, not taking their kingdom colours into consideration. And we obviously don’t want it to turn into some huge kingdom wide drama and all that.” He smiled again for good measure.

Abolish… still looked deeply unimpressed. Which- If Pyro was being honest, kind of hurt. He was trying really, really hard to get Abolish to like him. “Is that it?” Pyro’s smile faded pretty quickly. “Uh… Yeah. That’s everything.” “Okay.” He shrugged slightly. “I’ll uh…. Tell Shan I guess. Thanks for informing me of the measures you would like for us to take.”

He kind of awkwardly stood there before bowing and leaving.

“I- Uh. Bye.” He put his helmet back on.

Pyro was… kind of disappointed by that. But it definitely wasn’t because he found Abolish attractive. Definitely not. One hundred percent not. Even though… Abolish was very hot. And attractive. And cute-

And a blue kingdom knight who was likely untrustworthy and would not like them back…

“Bye…”

And Abolish began his walk back to his kingdom.

Pyro watched him go.

Abolish was kind of weird-

But- In a kind of nice way?

Was that possible?

Probably.

They smiled at the thought of him.

Yeah.

It was definitely possible.

Pyro did his best to collect his thoughts into something vaguely resembling normal. (Well for them at least.)

He wasn’t going to fall for a blue kingdom knight he’d only just met.

Especially not a traitorous one…

They were not going to fall for a blue kingdom knight they’d just met.

Even if he was cute.

Things would be set on fire otherwise.

And he- Couldn’t have anyone in blue knowing about that…

Pyro put his helmet back on and began the long walk back to the red
