In all semi-seriousness though, it's probably a touchy subject for John, and it would also open up a MASSIVE can of worms.

OK, you're gonna need A LOT of context for this. After Paul passed, The Beatles were all grieving and definitely not in a good state as John states in the interview. John was especially volatile. (Being the one closest to Paul and technically being his cause of death and what-not). Leading to a pretty toxic environment during Let It Be. Things got worse when Billy showed up. John basically bullied him throughout the entire time they were making the album. Saying some pretty nasty stuff towards him, and making sure Billy felt left out of the group, or like he didn't belong. Billy eventually got sick of his bullshit and wanted to "Get back" at John. So, he got into Abbey Road earlier than everyone else one day. And while John was walking into the studio that morning, he decided to play "Yesterday" (Paul's signature song) in front of him as payback. John responded to this by jumping him and beating him up INSIDE THE STUDIO. It was so bad, Billy ended up with a broken nose and a black eye by the end of it. I think John even tried to strangle him at one point.

Surprisingly, no! Let it Be was delayed again for a little bit though, and it sparked a MASSIVE controversy. I'd say it was on par with the "Bigger Than Jesus" shit. Some people thought that John was a crazy asshole that needed to be locked up, and others thought that Billy was tearing the band apart and hated the other members. Really though, I think both of them realized they were in the wrong, and decided not to press charges against one another. John's relationship with Billy has always been very complicated. Even after The Beatles disbanded, John always went back and forth between loving and hating Billy. He didn't really try to make things right with him until after 1980. After John... Y'know... Almost died.

John Lennon is a much better person than I am (not really). Because if my father figure died, and then two years later my best friend/maybe-lover died because of my stupidity. AND THEN I was forced to continue making the album we were working on together despite not wanting to. AND THEN a new bassist comes in to replace him despite the fact I didn't want him there in the first place either and also he looks a lot like my dead best friend/maybe-lover. AND THEN he starts to play the song my best friend/maybe-lover wrote. AND THEN TO TOP IT ALL OFF, I'M PRESENTED AS THE VILLAIN IN ALL OF THIS???? I wouldn't be on the news. I think I'd just explode right then and there.

When you put it like that... Yeah, John was REALLY going through it during 69' to 71' and after that. Explains the s*icide attempt. I'm surprised that didn't get mentioned in the interview either. Then again, it's also probably a touchy subject.

Yeahhhhh, John attempted s*icide somewhere around 1972. Luckily, Yoko found him in the middle of it and stopped him. He was sent to the psych ward for a bit though.

It feels like EVERYTHING just completely fell apart after Paul died. The band, John. Really, it all just went downhill from there.
Definitelynotawashingmachine:
ย
Oh you are absolutely right on that. Everything fell apart after McCartney died. I was pretty young at the time, but it flipped the world upside down. I can tell you that much!

ย
Hey, a nearly 70 year old user! What an honor! I hope this isn't too much to ask, but can you tell us how Paul's death affected the world in the 60's if that's ok? I love researching stuff about The Beatles, but it's one thing to read about it, and another to actually experience it.
No problem, I can definitely say a bit. Take this with a grain of salt though! I was pretty young at the time, and it's been 50 years.
ย
Paul McCartney's death fucking rocked the world EXTREMELY hard. Nobody suspected it happening. Nobody thought that one of the most famous men in the world would just up and die like that. I was only 9 years old at the time, and I still heard it over and over and over again! I remember the night it happened, my parents eyes were glued on to the TV, they just couldn't leave it. People held vigils for him. Created massive signs that they paraded around the streets. Made memorial artwork and music for him. And this was all what I witnessed in America! I can't imagine the way it affected people in the UK! I would also say that Paul's death (and also the death of Janis Joplin) were what really marked the end of the hippie era. Paul's passing caused people to start looking into the effects of LSD, weed, and other drugs. It highlighted the dangers of addiction, and directly and indirectly got a lot of laws surrounding drugs ratified. (Paul's Law in the UK. Look it up it exists! (Also DARE and a lot of other anti-drug laws and campaigns were done after Paul and Janis died, though not specifically because of them!). I think my sister said it best: "If Buddy Holly's death was 'The Day the Music Died' then Paul McCartney's death was 'The Day the Music Fucking Imploded in on Itself.'"

Wow, this is incredibly insightful. I knew about the vigils and the memorial songs and art, but I had no idea about Paul's Law! Thank you!

What memorial songs were made for Paul after he died? Specifically by the other members. Really shocked the interview didn't mention that either!Sounds like an interesting topic!
Also kinda disappointed that the interview didn't mention that either. But without getting into theory territory, here's the songs WE KNOW John and the others wrote for Paul after he died.
ย
Two of Us was originally written by Paul, but John took over writing after he died. John has stated numerous times that this song is kind of a goodbye letter to Paul. A farewell of sorts. He made that song to cope with his grief in a way.
ย
Let It Be is also about Paul... Kind of. Paul inspired it and led to its creation. According to John. It was also what officially got John to go back to the studio and finish Let It Be. Yoko helped, but that was finally convinced him that he had to go back. I'm surprised he didn't mention that.
ย
Here Today is also about Paul. I don't think I need to explain that one.
ย
Billy also wrote a song called "With You" during his solo career. It's also about Paul, but its mostly about Billy apologizing for taking his spot in the band, and wondering what could've been if they'd met under more favourable circumstances.
ย
"Thank You For Being Here" is George and Ringo's song for Paul that they also wrote during their solo careers. It looks back on George's childhood together with Paul and (as the songs title suggests) thanks Paul for being in George's life. With Ringo helping out with the drumming. It's actually a really sweet song, I'm surprised not a lot of people know about it.
ย
Also the song that John wrote "Paul" may be about Paul. Idk just a hunch.
ย
And finally, I don't think this list would be complete without the diss tracks John and Billy made for each other. I know that this list is about songs made for Paul after he died. But his death HEAVILY affected the creation of these diss tracks, and he was mentioned very often throughout them, especially on John's end. It wasn't until Billy made "Tomorrow" that the fighting between them finally stopped. That song was sort of Billy's peace offering to John. "Hoping for a better tomorrow" as Billy puts it. Absolutely gorgeous song btw go give it a listen.
About that last one: I think one of the most tragic parts about Paul's death is the fact that Billy and John could've honestly been really good friends if they'd met under literally any other circumstances. Like- there's a reason Billy was chosen to replace Paul in the band. He's a very similar person not just to Paul, but to John as well. They're both abrasive, impulsive, and can generally only write music with people they understand (Which is why I don't think John truly hated Billy). They could've been friends man. :(
Definitelynotawashingmachine:
ย
Oh, they absolutely could've been. I think that's one of the ultimate defining tragedies that Paul's death left behind. John and Billy could've (and probably still could be) very good friends! With Billy's similarities to John, they definitely could've been friends if they had met any earlier. But here's the thing: I don't think they can ever be friends anymore. Even today when things have settled down. Billy reminds John too much of Paul. It's gotten to the point where even if John can recognize that Billy is his own separate person from Paul, he can't separate the two in his mind. Billy will always just be "Paul's Replacement" to him. He can't ever be his own separate person. It would just be too painful for the both of them. The pain John would feel knowing that Billy is just like Paul. And the pain Billy would feel knowing that John doesn't love him for him and will never see him as his own person.
That's actually one thing I kinda hate about The Beatles fandom tbh. Why can't Billy ever be his own person? Why does he always have to be talked about in relation to Paul? The man's got his own solo career! He's so much more than just "Paul's temporary replacement". Also, a lot of people talk about John's grief over Paul (which is fair), but almost nobody mentions the grief Linda had to deal with! She just barely got married to Paul, and had to take care of a 3 month old Mary and a 6 year old Heather after he died WHILE SHE WAS GRIEVING. That is FUCKED, and nobody talks about it!
Definitelynotawashingmachine:
ย
YES! YES! EXACTLY THIS! More people here NEED to realize that Billy is his own person with his own talents and personality! His solo work is SO underrated, and his book was so poignant. It made me cry! And you are SO RIGHT on Linda! She deserves her flowers for going through such a horrible time while taking care of TWO children. One of them being a baby!
