Chapter 17: The Costume Change Contingency

The dark backstage corridors of the Old Gotham Theater were a labyrinth of panic. Stagehands scrambled in the pitch black, illuminated only by the frantic bounce of their smartphone flashlights.

But Marinette Dupain-Cheng wasn't panicking. She was moving with the terrifyingly efficient grace of a girl who routinely changed outfits mid-air while falling off the Eiffel Tower.

She ducked into an abandoned, dust-choked prop closet labeled Vaudeville 1924. Slapping her hand over the sleek leather purse at her hip, she let out a quick, controlled breath. "Tikki, we’ve got a major security breach. The local thugs are messing with my runway."

"They picked the wrong fashion show, Marinette!" Tikki squeaked, floating out into the dim light.

"Exactly. Tikki, spots on!"

A flash of brilliant pink light illuminated the inside of the closet for a fraction of a second, entirely masked from the outside by a stack of moth-eaten velvet stage curtains. A moment later, Ladybug stepped out into the hallway, her yo-yo humming quietly against her hip.

Meanwhile, three floors up on the catwalks, Damian Wayne had completely abandoned his civilian persona. He had ripped away his emerald-green tuxedo jacket, revealing a sleek, lightweight Kevlar tactical vest he’d hidden beneath his custom dress shirt. He pulled his black domino mask from a hidden pocket, pressing it firmly to his face.

Robin was live.

"Drake, I am on the upper rigging," Robin barked into his encrypted comm-link, his boots making absolutely zero sound as he sprinted across an iron beam. "The voice on the intercom belongs to Jonathan Crane’s former lab assistant—the self-proclaimed 'Couturier of Fear.' He is attempting to deploy a aerosolized variant of the fear toxin through the stage ventilation."

"Copy that," Tim’s voice crackled through the earpiece from the tech booth. "I’m trying to override the ventilation, but the main breakers are physically chained down in the basement. Wait—Robin, hold on. My thermal scanners just picked up a highly anomalous heat signature moving across the main stage curtain."

Robin stopped dead in his tracks, dropping low onto a steel girder. He peered down through the darkness into the cavernous, spotlight-lit auditorium.

A figure in a bright red, black-spotted suit was currently swinging effortlessly from a scenic backdrop rope, landing with a flawless, gymnastic roll right on the center of the runway.

"Ladybug," Robin muttered, his teeth grinding together in intense irritation. Why is she consistently interfering in my theater operations?

Live from the valet parking lot. The doors are deadbolted, so I’m currently using a tire iron to pry open the theater’s side exit. Tell the kid in the green shorts not to steal all my takedowns. 🛠️🦅

Replying to @book_and_bullets Too late, Jason. Robin just dropped through a skylight. He looks incredibly angry about his ruined tuxedo shirt. 🧑‍🎤✨

On the Main Stage

Down on the runway, the "Couturier of Fear"—a scrawny man wearing a high-collared, gas-mask-equipped burlap trench coat—was currently pointing a localized pneumatic canister at the front-row VIPs, who were screaming in terrified anticipation.

"Darlings, fashion is pain!" the villain cackled, his voice amplified by a portable megaphone. "And tonight, your winter collection is going to be absolute terror—"

ZIP-CRACK.

A heavy, weighted yo-yo cord whipped through the darkness, wrapping perfectly around the nozzle of the canister and ripping it violently out of his grip. The metal tank slammed into the stage floor, denting the runway.

"What?! Who dares interrupt my grand debut?!" the Couturier shrieked.

"Sorry, monsieur," Ladybug said, stepping into the beam of a single, auxiliary backup spotlight. She spun her yo-yo with a hypnotic, blinding speed. "But your style is completely outdated. Burlap? In July? It’s a total crime against fashion."

From the shadows directly above her, a sharp, metallic shhhk echoed through the rafters.

Robin descended from the ceiling like a hunting raptor, his dark cape flaring around him as his heavy boot connected cleanly with the villain’s shoulder, sending him crashing into a rack of evening gowns.

Robin landed gracefully on the runway, his dual-bladed staff extending with a sharp electronic hiss. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Ladybug, his posture stiff, lethal, and radiating a deeply protective aura that felt entirely too familiar to her.

Ladybug glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, her heart doing a weird, unexpected skip. Wait... those shoulders. That ridiculous, aristocratic tilt of his chin. Even the way he grips his weapon like a sword...

Robin glared forward at the rising villain, his jaw set. The center of gravity... the precise, weightless martial arts stance... the complete lack of fear in a Gotham combat zone...

The two vigilantes slowly turned their heads, their eyes locking beneath their respective masks in the dim spotlight.

"Wait a minute," Ladybug whispered, her jaw dropping slightly.

"You," Robin breathed, his green eyes widening behind his domino mask as his tactical brain executed a sequence of impossible, yet mathematically undeniable, deductions.
