Chapter Text
“Well..”
It was another loud, energetic practice at Inarizaki. They’d done so many practice matches with other teams in Hyogo, but none of them were ever really their level.
“Samu! Did’ya hear? We’re gonna have a training camp with Itachiyama!”
“Yes, Tsumu. I’ve been right here the entire time.”
“I’m so excited! Are ya excited?! I heard Itachi is really strong!”
Second years Miya Atsumu and Osamu, the famous volleyball twins of Inarizaki. Osamu had recently told Atsumu he wouldn’t be pursuing volleyball in the future, but they hadn’t told anyone yet. Atsumu had been upset, but he understood it would be unfair to force Osamu to follow a dream that was no longer his, and unfair to himself to be codependent on his brother forever and never really get the chance to grow.
“Quiet. I’m fixin’ to lock up the gym today with ye both. Behave.”
Kita’s voice cut through the after-practice chatter. Everyone eventually dispersed, going to the club room or the locker room. It was mainly the sound of supplies being used around the gym and the twins’ inevitable bickering that remained in the gym.
The following weekend, as promised, the Inarizaki team found themselves on a bus to Tokyo. Atsumu and Gin were chattering about how they thought it might go and how excited they were. Osamu was basically drooling on Rintarou’s shoulder, the latter doing the same on the wing spiker’s head.
The team checked into their hotel, resting for a while before getting ready to meet the Itachiyama players. They acquainted themselves, doing warmups before starting with ball drills.
“Ah! Aran-kun, nice spike!” Atsumu exclaimed happily after Aran hit his set perfectly. He hadn’t realized the curly haired spiker who’d been staring at observing him.
“Kiyo, do you have a crush on him or something? You keep staring.” Motoya’s voice snapped Kiyoomi out of his trance-like state. “I’m analyzing him. He seems to be a pretty good setter.”
“Yeah! That’s Miya Atsumu, one of the twins.”
“I can see that. He has a carbon copy right next to him.”
“Well damn Kiyo. You’re snippy today.”
“I’m snippy everyday.”
The two teams scrimmaged, and Atsumu was absolutely infatuated with Kiyoomi. He found it so interesting how his wrists could bend so far back, and how it affected his spikes.
When the players on each team swapped, Atsumu was put with Kiyoomi. Everyone knew this was going to be a nightmare.
Unsurprisingly, their team won. Multiple times. They were a power duo, after all. The thing was, they couldn’t stop bickering. The pair was amazing on the court, but awful outside it.
As punishment, they were put on cleaning duty.
Fuck.
Why do I have to clean with this guy? He pisses me off,
Atsumu thought. He mopped as Kiyoomi kept the nets back in the storage room.
The gym was silent except for the soft squeaking of their shoes. Too quiet for Miya Atsumu.
“Sakusa-kun, that opposite hitter of yers. The blond one, he isn’t on the starting lineup, is’e?”
“No, he isn’t.”
“I can tell. Ya should probably talk to him about his receives, he receives well in drills but can’t chase the ball for the life of him during a scrimmage.”
“Yes, I’m aware.”
…
Silence enveloped the gym again.
Then the setter started to talk.
And talk..
And talk…
And talk.
Does this guy never shut up?
Kiyoomi thought, still grabbing stray balls on the sides of the gym. But, Kiyoomi eventually started to find the things the setter was saying pretty interesting. He was talking about some unpopular news that he’d never heard of. Something about a Mars Argo and Poppy sharing an abusive boyfriend named Titanic?
“And then Argo sued both of them! Cause Sinclair used the eerie vibes and the 90 unused youtube videos and ideas they made together for his project with Poppy. So he was sued for copyright and and abuse, and Poppy was sued for being an accomplice! So they settled the lawsuit without any money hand exchanges, but Mars has a restraining order against Poppy and Titanic and they can’t say her name in public. And then—“
Kiyoomi actually found this interesting. Maybe they could get along.
“Wait— so after Poppy broke up with Titanic she apologized right?”
“Yeah, and it was all good until Poppy brought up the beef with Grimes again, and—“
They exchanged contacts.
Late at night, Atsumu found himself quietly sending more details about the topic so as not to wake his brother.
Late at night, Kiyoomi found himself eagerly reading every message and typing out short, blunt but intrigued messages.
They were already getting addicted to each other. Over the course of the next month, their text threads began turning to real life plans.
On a quiet Saturday evening in Tokyo, Kiyoomi and Atsumu found themselves on a swing set in a park near Kiyoomi’s neighborhood. Atsumu was chattering, his swing wildly going forward and backward as Kiyoomi listened intently. Kiyoomi’s was mostly still, occasionally swinging a little.
Atsumu’s features were illuminated in the moonlight, his honey brown eyes basically glowing as he spoke with so much passion.
“Atsumu,” Kiyoomi interrupted, earning a moment of silence before he spoke again, “you’re really pretty.”
The blond became as red as the Autumn leaves along the ground. “W-what?! Omi, that was so sudden!”
Kiyoomi ignored him, pulling a thin plastic sheet out of his bag. “I like you. A lot. May I be your boyfriend?” Wrapped in the plastic were two beautiful yellow gerbera daisies and two red roses. “T-these are.. Kiiroi Gābera. They symbolize cheerfulness, warmth and happiness. And the Akaibara.. you know what they mean. They reminded me of how you make me feel, so I picked some from my garden.”
“Aw, Sakusa! Who knew you were such a sap?” Adriah smiled. Kiyoomi’s ears burned red while Atsumu giggled. “Omi-kun! That confession is so cute! You really picked them from your garden?” Shouyou bombarded them with words, all while Meian gently patted Bokuto’s back. The latter was crying because of how sweet their getting-together story was.
“Omi-Omi still grows them for me! Our garden is full of flowers, but there's an entire section full of Kiiroi Gābera and Akaibara in the middle.”
“Shut up. They’re not for you.”
“Kiyo, you literally pick them and wrap them yourself every anniversary we have.”
“..Doesn’t mean they’re for you.”
