Chapter Text
The COI didn’t know it yet, but they had made a huge mistake by keeping him alive. If this *was* some sort of…. Organ Harvesting Facility, obviously someone would have to be here at some point to collect, he just had to wait it out.
At least that’s what he told himself.
After taking a few minutes to collect himself, he decided to risk checking out the drawers near the arm and under the alcoves. He managed to grab an armful of medical supplies, and a zippered duffle bag from one of the alcoves before the arm started to move again and he had to run back to the closet.
All in all he’d managed to snatch a bottle of blue surgical scrub, some saline, a few suture packs, an and a frankly indulgent amount of gauze in addition to the duffle bag.
He wasn’t a doctor, but he vague had memories of helping mother sewing up miners on Mars prior to quiet rapture, which he hoped was enough to rely on to repair the popped sutures. However it took much longer than he had hoped with one arm and in the quite frankly cramped confines of the supply closet. After he finished with that, he took stock of the rest of his bandages.
Although none of them were as bad as the ones protecting what was left of his arm, most of them needed to be changed nonetheless. The only exception seemed to be a clear plastic bandage that had been adhered to one of the few places on his body that had survived the sub’s destruction mostly unscathed (which he left alone for now).
He managed to use the surgical scrub and a bag of saline to clean his various burns and wounds as much as he could before bandaging himself up again.
The next order of business was definitely making room.
While he was carefully tossing the brooms and mops hanging on the back wall, he found a small maintenance hatch. Luckily this hatch didn’t require a passcode, just some elbow grease. The maintenance tunnel was just barely large enough for him to comfortably crawl his way through, but turning around was difficult, and standing was out of the question. It was also dark, but after about 15 minutes, his eyes had adjusted enough to navigate, albeit slowly.
After a few hours of investigation, he managed to find several other maintenance hatches labeled in English and two other languages he didn’t recognize. Most of them seemed lead to control boards and wiring for the life support, Co2 scrubbers, and a shit ton of other things he didn’t want to risk fucking with unless it was absolutely necessary. However, tucked into an area up the ladder and (he assumed) over the morgue. There were a few words on the label he didn’t understand, but “nutrition” was in there somewhere.
The food being stored in there had a similar texture to his prison rations, albeit a little denser and a little sweeter. It wasn’t his favorite thing to eat, but there was enough stored there to keep him alive for several years if he was careful.
He briefly considered sleeping in this area instead of the storage closet, but there was barely enough room for him to crawl inside, much sleep without risking puncturing one of the food bags and spoiling it.
All in all once he had moved all of the cleaning supplies out he had enough room to comfortably sleep while curled on his side with some space to store whatever supplies he was able to find in the corner. It wasn’t ideal, but it was certainly better than the alternative of sleeping in the tunnels, or the morgue itself.
Speaking of the morgue….
Simon mustered enough willpower to look through the duffle bag and found that it was (thankfully) not filled with organs, and seemed to be mostly packed with clothing, as well as a few books, most of which were either not his size, or in language he couldn’t read.
Eventually he was able to find a sweater and a pair of pants made of a soft fabric that he could just barely squeeze himself into. The rest of the clothes were shoved into the corner give himself something resembling a pillow.
It wasn’t the most comfortable place he’d ever slept… but it was definitely better than the alternative.
