Chapter Text
I take a final sip of my coffee and push off of the sofa.
“I’m gonna go check on Jax again.” I say looking to Ragatha who was sitting beside me. “Do you wanna come with me?”
“Oh no thanks Pomni, I promised Kinger I would visit the other abstractions with him.” Ragatha said, looking towards Kingers fort.
“Okay that's fine, I’ll see you later Ragatha!” Ragatha gave me a warm smile as I walked away.
I make my way to the tent where Jax resides, it’s been a few days since his form changed and not much has changed. I slowly open the entrance and step in. My eyes take a few seconds to adjust to the darkness, I look around but I can’t see Jax. I walk farther into the tent but Jax is still nowhere to be seen.
“Jax?” I say looking around.
As I look around me I suddenly spot something out of the corner of my eye. It's not a pillow, that's for sure, but it’s also much smaller than Jax is. I walk closer and see the shape of a familiar purple rabbit laying on the ground.
“Jax!”
I run towards him, He looks pretty much the same as before, other than the abstraction still covering his right leg, left arm, and a bit of the tip of his right ear. I run up to him and lean down, he’s still breathing even though they technically didn’t need to breathe. That was still a good sign I think?
I need to tell the others, I stand up and just as I’m about to leave I see Jax’s eyes flicker open. He bolts up right and starts hyperventilating, his eyes turning to scribbles. I sat back down next to him.
“Hey, hey it’s okay I’m here.”
“P-Pomni?” Jax says between gasps.
“Yes it’s me, it’ll be okay take deep breaths.”
Jax's breathing started to calm down and I started to tear up, I never thought I would see him like this again. I bring him into a hug, holding him tightly. At first he seems surprised at the gesture but after a moment I feel him squeeze back. We both start crying, I can feel his tears sinking into the sleeve of my jester suit. We sit there and cry with each other for a while before Jax pulls back and wipes his face.
“I probably look so stupid right now.” He sniffles.
“No, don't say that.” I say as I lean into the palm of my hand.
“I’m glad you're back.”
He looks a bit taken aback before he looks away.
“Me too Pompom.”
He looks at me and sighs.
“How long has it been since I… Abstracted?”
“About 5 months.”
“Wow.”
We fall into a comfortable silence for a bit before I look back at the exit and remember what I had been doing previously. I rise from where I was sitting and look at Jax.
“I need to go tell the others your back, I’m sure they’ll be happy your back!” I start walking towards the exit.
“Wait!”
I turn around to see Jax reaching out towards me.
“I don't want anyone to see me like… this.” He tucks his leg under him.
“Plus they… probably don’t wanna see me.”
“Jax I promise they want to see you, I won’t force you too but you will have to face them at some point.”
“I’m still going to tell them you unabstracted, but I’ll tell them you don’t want any visitors.”
He nods and looks down.
“I’ll be right back.”
I walk out of the tent and began making my way towards the main area. Everyone is there when I arrive. Gangle and Zooble are sitting next to each other, Gangle is flipping through her sketch book well Zooble leans over and looks at her art. Ragatha is sitting and doing a crossword and sipping out of a cup of what I assume to be tea. Kinger is sitting and looking at a drawing of a bee Caine is proudly showing him.
Ragatha was the first to see me. “Hey Pomni, how is Jax doing?”
Everyone looked at me and I suddenly felt a bit nervous, I fidget absent mindedly with one of the pompoms on my shirt.
“Jax… unabstacted.”
Everyone fell into silence with a look of surprise on their faces.
“How?” Zooble was the first to say anything.
“I’m not sure I walked in and he was just… there.”
“Is he okay?” Ragatha asked concern painted on her face.
“Yeah.” I say “But he said he didn’t want any visitors… I think he’s overwhelmed with everything.”
Everyone began to fall into conversation about how this happened, and what to do. After a while of talking with everyone I decided I should go back to Jax.
“I’m gonna go make sure he’s okay.” I announce.
Everyone nods and I split off from the group as I make my way back to the tent.
I walk into the tent and go towards the spot me and Jax were last talking. As I get there I see Jax curled up, fast asleep. I grab a nearby blanket and drape it over him.
“Goodnight, Jax.”
I find a pile of pillows not too far away and lay down myself, pulling another blanket I found over me. I hadn’t noticed how tired I was until now. I drift off fast as I think about the events of the day.
