Chapter Text

I awoke to the sound of an explotion that pushed my cage off of the edge of my table and sent me carieening onto the floor.

The kid winced a bit at the sound of my cage, flipping up his goggles that were covered in soot, much like everything in the lab.

"Oh sorry about that! Didn't mean to wake you up." he apologized profusely, before struggling to flip my cage up right.

After a few agonizing minutes, I rolled my eyes and shifted my weight so that the cage flipped backward with a slam.

"Hey, thanks! Now to begin with my testing." He announced to no one in particular, or maybe me. Grabbing a key, he slowly turned it, the click echoing off the walls.

The kid then as carefully with the key, opened the door to my prison.

I had planed in my head for hours the other night on what I would do if I was set free, but now that it was happening, it was so much more disorentnting than before, with hundreds of thoughts flying through my head, should I run? Fight him off and everyone else for locking me up in the first place?

I decided to do none of these plans, as I slowly stepped out of the cage. My wings drapped around various things in the room, much bigger than he was expecting, the eyes had closed at this point, maybe they couldn't reach me here?

The kid looked at me with a blended mix of fear, awe and something else, something that had been lost to me at this point, wonder.

"Wow-I mean-Wow, umm well this is-" He stammered, eyes still locked onto me, until he tripped on his own chair, falling onto the floor. "New." He finshed, wipping soot off of his face.

"It seems that these wings have been severaly damaged, more likely by arrows." The kid mused, continuing to inspect my wings.

My face was covered with my head wings, still, the idea of showing my face was well, frighting to say the least.

He found one of the arrows, brushing it slightly, causing pain to shoot through my entire being.

"Ahhh sorry about that, it seems to be infected though, so I might need to remove it, but its up to you." He asked causually, pushing off my wing and letting it fall to the ground with a thump.

I shook my head so fast I started seeing spots, no, needing people leads to pain, I can do everything on my own.

He ignored my warning and ripped it out anyways.

"MOTHERFUCKER THAT SMARTS"

He looked at me with wide eyes." Wait wait wait, you can speak?" He asked, tossing aside the arrow.

"Yeah genius, I can and I'd appreciate if you would stop ripping things out of my wings!" I yelled back, opening up my head wings on instinct, letting him get a good look at my eyes.

"...I'm so sorry but, well you can just let things fester and get worse, if you had let that stay, well it would have lead to amputation in like a week." He replied back, huffing stubbornly.

"Is that so kid?" I answered back, gritting my teeth and pulling back my wings.

"Yeah it is! And also, who are you calling a kid?" he said defensively.

"You, aren't you like I don't know... 10?" I asked, grabbing something from the table and twirling it around in my fingers.

"I'm 14." He answered back once again, grabbing the vial from my hands and slamming it down on the table.

"Oh my mistake, teen."

"why don't you just call me by my name?"

"Why don't you just stop asking stupid questions"

"Oh i'm not the one acting stupid here-"

"Can you just shut up JAY" I yelled at him, eyes glowing, before rembering there is no more jay, she is gone, I was the one that pushed her away.

I sighed, slumping down onto the floor, pulling my ripped-up hoddie around my head, pulling hard onto the strings.

He stopped arguing, most likely in shock.

a few quiet minutes pasted until in heard fabric brushing aganist the floor, i pulled open the hood ever so slightly, blue eyes looking back at me.

"... Was Jay a friend?" he asked in a small whisper, rubber gloves squeaking by the friction of the concreate.

"...Yeah, she was.... but not anymore." I answered back.

We both looked at the floor again, not speaking for a long while, until he cleared his throat.

"...I don't have many friends." He spoke again, eyes downcasted.

"...Well I what do you concider me?" I asked back, head tipped a bit.

"Wait, you think that I'm you're friend!" He lit up, shuffling to his feet, eyes wide and confused.

"Well yeah, you were the only person that didn't want me dead a couple days ago so you're kind of my only ally right now." I yawned, stretching out my wings and rolling my shoulders. " I'd call that close enough to a friend."

He smiled really wide, holding out his hand for me to grab, I rolled my eyes but then took it, as he stumbled to pull me up.

"You have got to get some meat on those bones..." I stopped myself before waiting for him to answer.

"Oh, umm Varian!" He answered quickly.

"Alright then Varian, the names Meadow." I answered back, walking out the door to no where in particular.

"so umm Em, where did you come from." He staggered and ran, trying to keep up with me.

"Another dimention I think, though there's no way I'm getting back there anytime soon."

"Well my door is always open, and don't worry I'll have dad take out the cage and bring in an actual bed."

"Thanks Hairstripe, I was getting cramps just thinking about going back in there." I ruffled his floofy hair and he tried to swat my hand away.

"Oh please, That cage was not that bad." He sighed rolling his eyes.

I looked back at him with a smirk, "oh really? How about you try it out then?" I pushed back.

"fine! I'll bet you three gold pieces that I can." He stated, turning around and putting his hands on his hips.

"We'll see goggles." I laughed.

We walked around the wood for a bit, talking about nothing in particular.

"Hey meadow, I wanna show you something!" Varian yelled from arcross the lab, pulling me from where I was wrapping my arms.

"Coming V, also you don't have to yell, we are in the same room." I answered back, slightly annoyed.

"TA DA!" He excitedly flared out his hands, shaking them, motioning towards a newly added space, complete with a door made of glass.

"V what is this?" I asked looking the space up and down.

"Well you were talking about how you were from somewhere else, a different universe or dimension, so I decided to try and start working on building you a way home! Now it won't be done for a long while, but I thought that letting you know could help." He explained thourghly, before rubbing his hands together nervously.

"Oh V, thanks, you really made this... for me?" I asked, ghosting my hand over the glass door.

"I thought that maybe working on the way back home together, might help you stay hopeful" he stammered, still a bit apprehensive.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked, a bit worried.

"Nope!" He answered, smiling.

"Why am I not supprised?" I sighed, smiling back.
