Chapter Text

Or at least, he tried to. A slight ringing echo trough his ears.

Now he is alone

-Parrot X2 'The former King of the Unstable Universe
For what felt like an eternity, he had done nothing but run. Through forests, across rivers, over hills and mountains, always looking over his shoulder, always listening for the footsteps of another hunting party. The world around him had long since become a blur of green and brown. Trees passed without him noticing. Paths blended together. His body moved entirely on instinct. Running away from them,
A spotted trail of blood followed behind him. It contrasted the gradient of the green grass. which he ran on.
The blood was enough to kill him if he did not find some bandages soon, as was every fight he had been forced into during his escape after they started to hunt him.
Cindercrest had chased him relentlessly.
Every time he managed to slip away from one group, another appeared ahead. Every time he found shelter, someone discovered it. Every time he thought he had gained distance, another group appeared on the horizon.
They were learning his ways.
The hunters pursuing him now were smarter than the ones before.
Better equipped.
More experienced.
Parrot's battered mix of diamond and iron armour looked pitiful compared to the enchanted gear many of them carried.
His stomach ached from hunger.
Food had become increasingly difficult to find after the new players had come, thus the famine on the sever. What little he managed to trade for rarely lasted long enough. Every passing day left him weaker, slower, more vulnerable than before.
His shoulder throbbed painfully. An earlier group had managed to get him in handcuffs and also nearly dislocate his shoulder in the processes but he was able to escape but the constant stress made worse by rough travel and countless encounters. It felt like it was broken beyond use, but every movement pulled at the joint and reminded him that his body was reaching its limits.
Still, he ran.
What other choice did he have?
The moment Parrot stopped moving, the hunt would be over.
A sharp twang echoed through the air.
Parrot's eyes widened.
An arrow shot past his head, narrowly missing him before burying itself into a nearby tree. The arrow embedded deep into its bark.
His body reacted before his mind could.
He pushed himself forward.
Then came a second arrow.
This one struck.
Pain exploded through his side.
A gasp escaped him as his legs gave out beneath him. The force sent him crashing into the ground. Dirt filled his mouth as he hit the forest floor.
He tried to stand.
His body refused.
Footsteps approached from all directions.
Voices.
Distant at first.
Then closer.
Parrot could barely make out the words.
Someone shouted that they had him.
Someone else warned the others to stay alert.
"Keep watching him."
"Why? He's barely conscious."
The second voice snorted.
"That's the man that has dodged half of us for weeks now."
A pause.
"The guy is dangerous and nearly killed on of our own, stay on edge."
Parrot would've laughed if he had the energy.
Instead, darkness crept into the corners of his vision. His world tilted as it all became a blur.
The last thing he heard was a voice muttering:
"Just make sure he doesn't pull anything funny."
Then everything faded to black.
Saparata adjusted his crown as he stood atop the grand platform overlooking the Northern Council.
Thousands of players filled the square below.
Veterans of the server.
Founding members.
Older players.
Players who remembered every hardship the Unstable SMP had endured.
The noise rolling through the crowd was deafening, conversations mixing together as rumours spread rapidly among the masses.
Everyone knew why they were here.
Everyone had heard the news.
Parrot had finally been captured.
Slowly, Saparata stepped forward.
The crowd gradually fell silent.
One conversation stopped.
Then another.
Then another.
Before long, thousands of eyes were fixed upon their king.
A smile tugged at the corner of Saparata's lips.
Power.
There was something intoxicating about it. Something that made him want to bathe in it, the power of having thousands listing to your every word, it felt exhilarating like every fibre in him pumped the adrenaline in his veins.
"Players of the Unstable SMP."
His voice boomed across the square.
"We have suffered."
A murmur of agreement spread through the crowd.
"We have lost friends."
More voices joined in.
"We have gone hungry."
Several players nodded immediately.
Food shortages were something everyone remembered. They all remembered why.
No matter where they had lived.
No matter what side they had been on.
"There was never enough food."
Silence settled over the square.
"We watched bandits roam our lands, attack our settlements, and take what belonged to us."
The crowd grew louder.
"And through all of this..."
Saparata paused.
"We were told mercy was the answer."
The crowd erupted into agreement.
"We were told everyone will make it, as we watched our homes burn."
Cheers.
"We were told those who harmed us would be captured as we hid from another wave of bandits taking what little we had left."
More cheering.
Saparata's gaze swept across the square.
"And while mercy was given... to players who never suffered, to new players, to ones that never built a thing on this sever and claimed it as there own"
His voice hardened.
"We suffered."
The crowd erupted.
Shouts echoed throughout the city.
Some cheered.
Some yelled Parrot's name in anger.
Others simply listened.
Saparata raised a hand.
Silence quickly followed.
"I am told I should forgive him."
His tone was almost mocking.
"I am told I should remember the people he protected."
A few people shifted.
"I am told I should remember the civilisations he sustained."
More silence.
Saparata smiled.
"And I do."
That caught some of the crowd off guard.
"I remember all of it."
He stepped closer to the edge of the platform.
"But I also remember the players we buried."
The crowd grew quiet.
"I remember empty chests us having to beg for scrapes as people gave what little they had to keep people alive."
He pointed into the crowd.
"I remember friends starving."
More nodding.
"And I remember a king who chose mercy for players who never crowned him while his own people paid the price."
The square exploded once again.
Exactly the reaction he wanted.
Saparata let the cheering continue before giving another signal.
The crowd turned.
Parrot emerged from behind the platform.
Bound in iron cuffs with his hands behind his back, the former king was escorted onto the stage by four guards.
Many expected him to look broken.
Instead he simply looked tired.
Bruises marked parts of his face.
A bandage wrapped around his shoulder beneath the simple pale shirt and pants he was forced to wear after his capture.
His clothes were dirty from travel.
His eyes carried the exhaustion of someone who had spent far too long running.
Yet despite everything—
He remained calm.
One of the younger guards glanced nervously at him.
The older guard beside him muttered quietly.
"Keep watching him."
The younger player frowned.
"Why?"
The veteran snorted.
"Because I don't want to die, bro."
The younger guard while never truly understood he just nodded.
Parrot heard the conversation but didn't react.
That somehow made him even more unsettling.
The crowd watched as he was brought to the centre of the stage.
Some stared with hatred.
Others with disappointment.
A few looked away entirely.
Saparata stepped beside him.
"The former king of the Unstable SMP... The First King stands next to me."
The crowd fell silent.
Parrot slowly lifted his head and looked at Saparata.
For the first time, emotion broke through his calm expression.
Anger.
Frustration.
Disappointment.
Sadness.
Even helplessness.
For a brief moment they all flashed through his eyes at once.
Saparata saw it.
And smiled.
"The former king of this server."
He rested a hand on Parrot's shoulder.
"Isn't that right, Parrot?"
Parrot said nothing.
The silence only made the crowd more uneasy.
Saparata turned back toward the audience.
"In one week's time..."
The entire city seemed to hold its breath.
"You will witness the execution of ParrotX2."
The square erupted.
Cheers.
Shouting.
Applause.
Voices overlapping one another until they became one deafening roar.
"A fallen leader."
Saparata's smile widened.
"A reminder of what happens when weakness is allowed to rule."
The cheering intensified.
"And the final dying grace of the old server."
The crowd roared their approval.
As guards began leading Parrot away, he glanced back one final time.
Not at the crowd.
At Saparata.
The look he gave him carried a thousand unspoken words.
Then he disappeared behind the platform.
Saparata remained standing before the cheering crowd for several moments longer, basking in their approval before finally turning and walking away.
The people had made their choice.
Or at least, that was what Saparata wanted them to believe.
