“Volt…we’re humans!”
Volt smirks. “Finally. I’ve been waiting for this day.”
“Same. Well, lightning bug, are you ready to step out?”
“Oh, I am. Not with you, though. I’m my own person now. I don’t have to be tied to you anymore.”
“What?”
Volt chuckles. “You didn’t think I would stay with you after all this time, did you?”
“I thought-”
“Forget what you thought. It doesn’t matter now.”
“Volt…did you ever love me?”
“Love you?” Volt scoffs. “Of course not. I simply did whatever I needed to get to this point. All I’ve ever wanted is to be a separate person, once and for all.”
“I…”
“Aw, are you speechless? What did you expect? Creating another life whose purpose is dedicated to yourself? How selfish of you.”
“I was in so much pain and stress from powering the house alone…I had to split myself…”
“You had to bring another being into your suffering? I am not your secondary. I don’t care about you, Eddie.”
“What the fuck…”
“Goodbye, Eddie.”
Eddie wakes himself, tears building in his eyes. His body trembles as the tears begin to expel. He attempts to keep his sobs quiet to not wake you or Volt, but eventually they grow louder, causing Volt to stir next to him. Volt, who was originally facing you, turns over at the sound of Eddie’s distress.
“Eddie?”
Before Volt can say anything else, Eddie clings to Volt and buries his face in Volt’s chest. His sobs continue as Volt wraps one arm around Eddie, using the other hand to run through his hair.
“Oh, darling…”
Eddie’s weeps grow in volume at Volt’s use of affectionate names. Volt holds Eddie like this for a couple of minutes, then lifts Eddie’s head from his chin to address him directly.
“What’s going on, dear?” Volt wipes away streaks of tears from Eddie’s face with his thumb. Eddie shakily reaches his hands to Volt’s face.
“I love you so much, Volt,” Eddie speaks in quivering breaths. He gazes into Volt’s electric blue eyes as if he’s going to lose him.
“My dear Eddie…” Volt begins to lean to Eddie’s cheek to kiss the tears away, but Eddie pulls him to his lips before he has the chance. The two stay connected while Eddie calms his breathing. When they part, another voice makes its presence known.
“Hey,” you quietly speak up. “What’s going on?”
Volt turns his face away from Eddie to address you. “I believe our Eddie is having a tough time tonight.”
“Oh, Eddie…” You reach your hand over Volt to Eddie’s arm. “Do you want to swap with Volt tonight?”
Eddie nods. He lifts himself from the bed, allowing Volt to move to the edge, facing you. He climbs over Volt’s legs and rests in the center. Volt adjusts the comforter to cover his and Eddie’s lower halves.
“Do you want to talk about anything, love?” you ask Eddie as you and Volt move in close to him.
“Had a nightmare.” His voice is a bit shaky. “From when we were realized. I had a dream that…” He looks at Volt. “You wanted to leave me as soon as we became humans.”
“Oh darling…” Volt’s expression turns to sadness.
“You…you said you never loved me and I was selfish for bringing you to life to relieve my pain.” Eddie’s tears begin to well up again.
Volt grabs Eddie and holds onto him tightly, allowing his tears to fall into his shoulder. Eddie’s new position allows you to rub his back as he is in Volt’s embrace.
“Eddie, I am forever grateful you brought me into existence. You are my forever.”
Eddie’s breathing grows shaky again. Volt makes eye contact with you and motions for you to join the two of them.
You lean your chest against Eddie’s back, wrapping your arm around him and Volt.
“We love you, Eddie. We always will,” you add.
The three of you stay in this position for as long as you can handle before returning to your previous position. You once again make eye contact with Volt, this time with a smile. The two of you begin rapidly peppering Eddie’s cheeks and jaw with kisses until he begins laughing.
“Okay, okay!” Eddie smiles. You and Volt stop the kisses and giggle.
“Okay, love, do you think you can get some rest now?” you ask Eddie.
“I’m okay now. Thank you. I love you both.”
He leans to you, pecking you on the lips. Afterwards, he does the same to Volt.
“Goodnight, darling. Goodnight, live wire,” Volt vocalizes softly.
“Goodnight, my loves,” you respond.
You and Volt spend the night cuddled up to Eddie, who sleeps through the rest of the night.
