She’ll be gone after today. Off to university, and once she has a degree, she’ll never be coming back. Tabitha was taking over the mines, that’s what Agnes had said. She had no reason to stay. The only person with a degree who came back was his mother, and he didn’t even know why. It was hard to get a straight answer out of the woman; she never talked about the time before he was born.

Vivan Scarlet never got out of the Holler, raising her daughter until her untimely death. Summary
You really should consider yourself lucky. You managed to get all the kids out of the collapsing mine, and you discovered the first of the stone carvings you were looking for. True, you ended up with a concussion and a lot of bruises, but it was a small price to pay. You could even say that it was worth it. Your cousin actually took a day off from work to spend time with you, and most of the town considered both of you local heroes now.
You knew that the week had just begun. There was a lot more to do, and you needed to quickly pull yourself together if you wanted to survive. Unfortunately, the only person who could offer a quick-working solution was the one who, you suspected, was complicit in creating this whole mess in the first place.
