confession #0041: EVERYONE STOP. The handbook says "information may be false (no penalty for lying to competitors)" which means its literally LEGAL to sabotage people via strategic misinformation

Isagi didn't sleep either.

She'd read the handbook twice. Once for content, once for the stuff the handbook was too polite to say out loud. The 72-hour Lock wasn't a competition. Competitions had winners. But this? This was a filter. A three-day machine designed to identify who would break first, who would hurt people to survive, and who would be dumb enough to think there was a difference between the two.

She lay on her bunk — she'd claimed it around 2 AM, quietly, while Bachira was asleep on her bed again, which had required both boldness and some light shoving — and thought about the board.

299/300

The board would update every thirty minutes. She'd be able to watch herself sink or swim in real time. Everyone would watch. That was not accidental.

Anri Teieri wasn't asleep either, but for different reasons.

She was in Ego's office at 6:47 AM andhadn't asked for permission inside, mostly because Ego respected people who didn't ask permission for some reason and didn’t care enough. He was drinking coffee from a mug that said TRUST THE PROCESS.

"This is too fast," Anri said. "Seventy-two hours for three hundred first-year students with no preparation, no training, no understanding of their own—"

"Limitations?" Ego set the mug down carefully. "The handbook was distributed yesterday. That's twenty-four hours of preparation time."

"They're around seventeen years old."

"They're old enough to understand that survival requires action." He moved toward the window. His office overlooked the Genesis courtyard. "You were in admissions when they arrived, did they look unprepared to you?"

Anri had been in admissions. She'd seen three hundred girls looking at the rank board like it was a sentence being handed down. She'd seen the blue haired girl Ego picked out himself from Genesis Hall look at that board and then immediately start cataloguing everyone else in the room, which had been the most frightening thing Anri had witnessed all day.

"They looked scared," Anri said.

"Good." Ego stood up. "Scared people are honest. Fear strips away everything performative."

Anri left without another word.

By 9:47 AM, Genesis Hall's common room was full with the new students.

Kuon had arranged the chairs into a loose circle, then rearranged them three times before settling on an angle that let everyone see everyone else. She was the type who naturally understood spatial organization, who could see a room and immediately envision how people should move through it.

Iemon was standing by the doorway like she was mapping exits and contingencies.

Gagamaru was sitting silently, still in yesterday's athletic gear, looking like she'd been monitoring something all morning. Her posture was perfect. Her breathing was steady.

Isagi sat near the back next to Bachira, who was eating cereal dry from a bowl. On Isagi's other side, Kunigami was typing something aggressive on her phone, her tanned knuckles turned white.

Chigiri arrived last, moving with careful precision, positioning herself at the edge where the circle didn't quite reach. Her knee brace was visible under her uniform. Kunigami noticed immediately and stopped typing.

Kira stood up. She'd changed clothes since last night — better shirt, hair redone, the careful presentation of someone who understood that first impressions determined everything.

"Okay, so we need to talk about strategy," Kira said. "If Genesis coordinates, we can support each other through the Lock. We don't turn on ourselves and stay unified."

"How does that work exactly?" Naruhaya asked. She already had a notebook out, already doing calculations with the careful attention of someone used to tracking human impact alongside numbers. "The collective pool is static. Five hundred points. Individual points only transfer through challenge outcomes. So… if we don't challenge each other internally, we're just pulling from other halls. But other halls are doing the same thing."

She paused, looking at the numbers. "More importantly — who can afford to lose points? Who has family backing? Who's on full scholarship? Because if we're coordinating, we need to know who's actually vulnerable."

"Exactly," Kuon said. "We need organization. I can coordinate who competes when. Make sure we're not wasting energy or opportunities."

"And if someone fails?" Iemon asked. Her tone was pragmatic, cutting through idealism. "If someone loses their trial, or gets eliminated, what then? Do we sacrifice them for the group, or do we all fall together?"

The room got quiet.

"We support them," Kunigami said quietly. "We keep people above the elimination line. Everyone survives."

"That's idealistic," Imamura said. She was fidgeting with his pen, a habit that appeared whenever she was thinking about how people felt. "But realistically, someone's gonna be eliminated. That's the point of the Lock. So the question isn't whether we sacrifice someone, it's whether we choose who that is or if we let it be random."

"It won't be random," Gagamaru said. It was the first thing she'd said all morning. She was still sitting perfectly still, her posture impeccable, her breathing controlled. "The lowest-ranked students in the most vulnerable halls will be eliminated first. Their bodies will break before their minds adapt. Genesis is the most vulnerable. So unless we coordinate, it's gonna be one of us."

"So we coordinate," Kira said. "We form a fairness pact. No Genesis challenges Genesis. We target students from other halls systematically. We redistribute points internally to keep everyone climbing."

"But that means we're choosing to eliminate people from other halls instead of ourselves," Naruhaya said. She wasn't arguing. Just laying it out. "That's not neutral. That's us picking a direction."

"Yeah," Kira replied. "But it's picking a direction that keeps us alive."

Kunigami looked down at her phone. "I’m still not sure about this but I’ll cooperate.”

"I’m in," Kuon said. "I can organize it."

"I'll handle the logistics," Iemon added. "Track who's competing when, make sure we're not wasting challenges, coordinate the point redistribution."

"There’s something I’d like to add," Imamura said, raising his hand slightly. "If Genesis is gonna turn into a team, we need to also think about morale. People are gonna get scared and then eliminated. We need to make sure the hall doesn't fall apart emotionally while we're doing this."

Naruhaya added, "I can track the financial implications. Who's losing scholarships, who can afford to lose points, who absolutely needs to climb. That way we know who to protect."

Gagamaru nodded slowly. "I'll monitor the physical state. If someone's deteriorating, if someone's pushing too hard, I can flag it."

Chigiri still hadn't spoken but she seemed to perk up at the last statement. She was just sitting at the edge, listening.

"Isagi?" Kira looked at her.

"I'm not sure yet," Isagi said.

"That's fair," Bachira said. "Because this pact is about to—"

Raichi walked in then, moving with the excitement of a dog, like she'd been running since dawn and had no intention of stopping.

"I've been thinking about strategy," she said, not waiting for context. "We can challenge students based on conditioning metrics. I've got data on most of the first-year class because of my major. Athletic capacity, recovery rates, physical performance trends, you name it. I can identify who's gonna break under pressure."

Kunigami looked at her. "That's... pretty aggressive."

"It's perfect," Raichi replied. "The Lock removes one person. That person is either Genesis or some other loser. I prefer someone else. So, I'm challenging people I can beat easily."

She left before anyone could respond, already heading toward the kitchen like she had somewhere to be.

Isagi watched this all happen and realized something: Kira had organized a coalition that was actually organized. These weren't random people. These were people with actual skills. Kuon could manage logistics. Iemon could handle crisis response. Naruhaya could track resources. Imamura understood group dynamics. Gagamaru was strategic about physical capacity.

The fairness pact wasn't just an ideology. It was an entire infrastructure.

Which made it worse, somehow.

At 10:00 AM exactly, the announcement chime sounded across the entire campus.

SECOND ASSEMBLY — LOCK BRIEFING — IMPERIAL HALL — 10:15 AM.

Ego was waiting on the stage when they filed in. Same stage as yesterday. Same clinical posture. Different energy.

"The 72-hour Lock begins at 10:00 AM on April 6," he said. "Your first challenges may be issued as of this moment. The objective is simple: determine individual and collective rankings through direct competition. One student from the first-year class will be removed from enrollment at the conclusion of this period."

Behind him, the screen lit up. The official rules appeared in crisp, bureaucratic font:

BLUE LOCK ACADEMY
OFFICIAL NOTICE: THE 72-HOUR LOCK
FIRST YEAR CLASS OF 20XX
APRIL 6-9

OBJECTIVE:
Determine individual and collective rankings through direct competition.
One student from the first-year class will be removed from enrollment
at the conclusion of this period.

COMPETITION FORMATS (Select One Per Challenge):

  1. ACADEMIC TRIAL
     — Written exam, portfolio review, or problem-solving exercise
     — 20-90 minute duration
    — Judged by faculty or peer assessment
     — Point differential: +/- 5 to 25 points
  2. ATHLETIC TRIAL
     — Head-to-head physical competition
     — 10-60 minute duration (must conclude within Lock window)
     — Self-judged by objective measurement or faculty observation

  3. CREATIVE TRIAL
     — Art, design, performance, or strategic presentation
     — 30 minutes to 8 hours prep/execution
     — Judged by peer vote or faculty rubric
     — Point differential: +/- 5 to 20 points
  4. STRATEGIC TRIAL
     — Logic puzzle, debate, game-based scenario, or simulation
     — 15-120 minute duration
     — Judged by accuracy, outcome, or peer evaluation

  5. HYBRID TRIAL
     — Combination of 2+ formats
     — Custom duration and judging
     — Approved by student council or administration
     — Point differential: +/- 15 to 40 points (higher risk/reward)

CHALLENGE MECHANICS:

INITIATING A CHALLENGE:
— Any student may challenge any other student(s) to a trial
— Challenge must be issued in writing or through official channels
— Recipient has 4 hours to accept or decline
— Declining a challenge forfeits 3 points to the challenger
— Multiple simultaneous challenges are permitted

ACCEPTING A CHALLENGE:
— Acceptance must be confirmed in writing within 4-hour window
— Both parties agree on format, duration, and judging method
— Trial must occur within the 72-hour Lock period
— No student may compete in more than 4 trials per day

POINT TRANSFER:
— Winner receives points from loser's individual pool
— Points are NOT transferred from hall pool (individual only)
— Ties result in 0 point transfer (both retain current rank)
— Point values determined by format and difficulty agreement
— Transfers are FINAL and recorded immediately

Ego let the rules sink in.

"Additional point modifications," he continued. The screen changed again.

ADDITIONAL POINT MODIFICATIONS:

PUBLIC APPROVAL (Peer Voting):
— Any student may submit a peer-vote for "Most Impressive Performance"
— Vote conducted via anonymous poll (1x per student per day)
— Winner receives +2 bonus points
— Maximum +6 points per 24-hour period

VOLUNTARY WITHDRAWAL:
— Student may forfeit their individual rank if they withdraw
— Forfeited points return to hall collective pool
— Student is removed from competition but NOT from enrolment
— Cannot re-enter Lock after withdrawal

MISCONDUCT PENALTY:
— Cheating, intimidation, or rule violation: -5 to -15 points
— Flagged by faculty or student council
— Recorded in permanent file

ABSTENTION PENALTY:
— Refusing a valid challenge (beyond the 4-hour decline window): -3 points
— Refusing to compete if accepted challenge is issued: -5 points
— Three abstentions = automatic -10 point deduction

RANKING & ELIMINATION:

RANK UPDATES:
— Individual ranks updated in real-time on the board
— Visible to all students at all times
— Updates reflect point transfers within 30 minutes of trial conclusion

ELIMINATION THRESHOLD:
— Student ranked LAST (300th) at 72-hour mark is removed
— Removal is from enrolment, not from campus (physical departure within 48 hours)
— All sponsorships, recommendations, and financial aid packages are forfeited
— No appeal process

TIES AT ELIMINATION:
— If multiple students are tied for last: the student with the longest tenure at that rank is eliminated
— If all metrics are identical: the student with lowest starting rank (higher original number) is eliminated

"The rules are comprehensive," Ego said. "The rules are also final. What you do within them is entirely up to you."

The screen changed one more time. The special rules section appeared.

SPECIAL RULES & LOOPHOLES:

HALL COLLECTIVE POOL:
— Hall point pools are NOT modified during individual Lock
— Collective pools remain static at: APEX 10,000 | SOVEREIGN 5,000 |
  HOLLOW 2,500 | VANGUARD 1,000 | GENESIS 500
— Collective will be redistributed after Lock concludes based on hall performance

MULTI-PERSON CHALLENGES:
— Challenges may involve 2-4 students
— Points distributed among winner(s) or deducted from loser(s) proportionally
— Example: 2v2 challenge won by Team A results in winner +X each, loser -X each

JUDGING AUTHORITY:
— Faculty judges are final and cannot be appealed
— Peer voting is anonymous and binding for creative trials
— Students may request specific judges (faculty may refuse)
— Student council may override any judgment if misconduct is proven

INFORMATION TRADING:
— Students may exchange trial questions, strategy, or opponent data
— No restriction on information sharing
— Information may be false (no penalty for lying to competitors)
— Documented cooperation for mutual benefit is permitted

WITHDRAWAL FROM INDIVIDUAL RANK (NOT FROM SCHOOL):
— Student may voluntarily return all earned points to hall pool
— This removes them from individual ranking but NOT from enrollment
— They may not re-enter the individual competition for the Lock
— Hall benefits from their point return

VENUE & RESOURCE ACCESS:
— Trial venues are first-come, first-served
— Resources (equipment, tutors, materials) are available but not equally funded
— Hall funding does not provide trial advantage (Apex/Genesis compete on same terms)
— Students may bring external resources if legally/ethically obtained

TIMING:
— Lock begins: April 6, 10:00 AM (first challenges issued/accepted this time)
— Lock ends: April 9, 10:00 AM sharp
— Final ranking finalized: April 9, 10:30 AM
— No trials conducted after 10:00 AM on April 9

"Seventy-two hours," Ego said. "Three days. Two hundred sixty trials maximum. One student eliminated. The system is transparent, absolute, and could give less of a fuck."

He walked off without waiting for questions.

Kaiser stood up from her seat in the Apex section and applauded slowly.

Anri was standing at the edge of the stage with the kind of expression that suggested she'd stopped objecting around 2 AM.

Groupchat: let's survive 🤕

10:32 AM

Kuon:

okay everyone. structure first. no genesis challenges genesis. we target other students only. iemon handles scheduling. naruhaya does the analysis. imamura keeps everyone functional. gagamaru watches physical state. clear?

Kunigami:

i'm good

Naruhaya:

vanguard has scattered sponsorships and sovereign is concentrated wealth but higher internal pressure

genesis stays safest if we don't fragment

Imamura:

yeah we should eat together tonight actually

ppl think better when they feel like part of something instead of just surviving

Gagamaru:

👍

Iemon:

other halls are issuing challenges already

Kuon:

who's ready for the first wave?

Kunigami:

i'll compete

Bachira:

me too

Kuon:

isagi?

Isagi:

i'll wait

Bachira:

actually i'm challenging Isagi to a athletic trial (★‿★)

obstacle course. 2 pm tomorrow. 15 points.

Kuon:

that breaks the structure

Bachira:

i never said i was part of the pact tho

Naruhaya:

oh!

Imamura:

wtf so the structure isn't even tight???

Gagamaru:

well we never confirmed with anyone so

Kunigami:

Bachira why

Bachira:

i want to know who she is

Isagi:

i accept

Kuon:

okay. isolated trial. everyone else stays coordinated.

Raichi:

i'm targeting three from vanguard. physical capacity tests. they'll break.

Kunigami:

don’t you think that’s a bit much?

Raichi:

i already told you it’s the easiest way

Kuon:

naruhaya log it

Naruhaya:

logging

Imamura:

are we just... okay with sacrificing people now? like is that normal?

Gagamaru:

its blue lock

Kunigami:

we're protecting our own

Naruhaya:

better them than us

Kuon:

we move forward. everyone ready?

Various:

[various acknowledgment messages]

Kuon:

let's climb

April 6, 20XX

April 7, 2:00 PM.

The central courtyard obstacle course was basically an organized nightmare: ropes hanging from poles, platforms that required jumps, a wall that needed climbing, a maze of tight spaces that required crawling, a series of balance beams, and then a final sprint to the finish line.

Bachira was already there when Isagi arrived, stretching with the casual confidence of someone who'd never questioned her own body. She was wearing athletic gear that had probably cost more than Isagi's entire wardrobe. She was also genuinely smiling, which was the scariest part.

"You're here," Bachira said. "I knew you would show up!"

"Most people back out around the crawling part," Isagi said.

"Yeah. Scared is when you learn who you actually are." Bachira stood up, shook out her legs. "Okay so here's what we're doing. We both start at the same time. We both have to complete the course in order. No skipping. First person to cross the finish line wins. The judges are over there." She pointed to two faculty members setting up clipboards. "They're timing us and watching for rule violations. Sound good?"

"Sounds good," Isagi said.

They lined up at the starting line.

The whistle blew.

Bachira moved like she'd been born moving. She hit the first rope climb with casual confidence, already halfway through the obstacle course while Isagi was still pulling herself up the first rope.

But that was the thing about obstacles: they required stopping. Bachira was so focused on speed that she nearly missed the platform gap and had to catch herself. She recovered fast but she still had to recover. That was a moment where she had to adjust.

Isagi was slower, but she was reading ahead. By the time she reached each obstacle, she already understood the next one. The balance beams weren't about balance; they were about momentum. The wall was about finding the angle that required the least energy. The crawl space wasn't a problem; it was just a different direction.

By the time they reached the final sprint, they were close. Bachira had speed. Isagi had efficiency. Bachira was already sprinting. Isagi was already moving.

And then Bachira, beautiful chaotic Bachira, decided to look back.

It was just for a second. It was just to see if Isagi was there. But that second was enough. Isagi hit the finish line a half-step ahead.

The judges looked confused. Bachira looked delighted.

"+15 points for Isagi," the judge said. "Bachira, no point transfer in a tie scenario, but good effort."

Except it wasn't a tie. But Bachira didn't argue.

She just grinned at Isagi, breathing hard, looking absolutely alive.

"I let you win," Bachira said.

"No, you didn't," Isagi replied.

"No, I didn't," Bachira agreed. "But I will next time. Because I want to keep playing with you, and dead people can't play."

She walked off before Isagi could process what that meant.

The board updated at 2:47 PM.

Isagi was now ranked 287th.

She'd moved up twelve positions in a single trial.

The fairness pact was officially being tested.

-begin of chat-

To: let's survive 🤕

2:52 PM

Naruhaya:

Isagi: 299 → 287. Bachira trial concluded

Kunigami:

WHAT

Naruhaya:

she won

Raichi:

WAIT. 296 LOST TO 299? THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

Bachira:

i let her win

Raichi:

YOU THREW

Imamura:

okay but also can we not have drama in here

Raichi:

this is dumb as fuck what is wrong with them

Bachira:

it was interesting that’s all :3

Kuon:

trial is separate from pact structure. we move forward

Kunigami:

got it

Gagamaru:

that was fun to watch

Naruhaya:

status: raichi's conditioning trials. she won all three. point gain: 5 total. trials contained hybrid elements. adaptability factor higher than predicted.

Raichi:

THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE??

Naruhaya:

they didn't break and changed instead

that's an entirely different data raichi

Iemon:

so our prediction model is already failing

which means our timing structure needs adjustment

Imamura:

do we change the whole plan?

Kuon:

we refine. naruhaya, adaptability metrics into vulnerability map. iemon, recalculate based on hybrid probability. gagamaru, physical state alerts

Kunigami:

genesis still survives together?

Kuon:

yes. with better data

Gagamaru:

sounds good

Isagi:

btw thanks for the match bachira

Bachira:

come back tomorrow? 👀👀

Isagi:

maybe

Kunigami:

are you joining the pact

Isagi:

still deciding

Kuon:

you have time. 65 hours

-end of chat-

Lights-out was at ten.

But nobody slept.

Instead, three hundred girls stayed awake doing everything they could in the dark. Calculating odds. Running scenarios. Making deals with themselves about what they'd accept, what they'd refuse, or where they'd draw the line between survival and sacrifice.

In room 214, Isagi lay on the bottom bunk and listened to the building breathe around her. Somewhere above, Bachira was still awake too and finally on her own bed, but she wasn't anxious. She was waiting, excited, and hungry for the next interesting thing that was about to happen.

Isagi pulled up her phone.

The betting pool now had Isagi at 12% odds of surviving. 15% odds of reaching top 100.

She pulled up the rules again.

INFORMATION TRADING:
— Students may exchange trial questions, strategy, or opponent data
— No restriction on information sharing
— Information may be false (no penalty for lying to competitors)
— Documented cooperation for mutual benefit is permitted

She could issue false information, convince people of things that weren't true, use the system's transparency against itself. She could read people so completely that she'd know what lies they'd believe, what truths they'd reject.

Or.

She could just keep reading. Keep listening. Keep watching. Keep being the person who looked at everyone else first, who cataloged grudges and alliances and the moment when someone's load-bearing belief system cracked.

Keep being the person who understood the board before the board understood itself.

Then Bachira sent her a text message: "when does the monster come out??"

Isagi didn't respond.

She already knew.

The monster came out the moment survival stopped being an option and started being a choice.

It was coming in sixty-five hours, the shape of a girl who'd realized that being number one was just another way of seeing everyone else. That rank was just a view of the board from a different angle. That the only way to burn the system down was to climb to the top of it first and watch it all from there.

Outside, the rank board updated at 11:47 PM.

Isagi was still ranked 287th.

She'd moved up twelve positions in a single trial.

The fairness pact was officially being tested.

And the real Lock, the one that mattered, had finally begun.
