Chapter Text
It was a peaceful day in Corona. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the grass is green. In the fields of Corona, Rapunzel and Eugene are riding their horses and having a small race. Rapunzel is in the lead but Eugene is catching up. Looking back, Rapunzel sees Eugene getting closer by the second. Adrenaline flows through her as she realizes she might lose this.
“Come on Maximus, faster!!” yells Rapunzel.
Maximus responds with a snort and speeds up. Slowly but steadily, Rapunzel starts to gain some distance and ultimately crosses a tree which seemingly acts as a finish line. Triumphant, Rapunzel raises her hands in celebration.
“I win!!” exclaims Rapunzel.
Eugene rides to her smiling, saying, “I suppose you did Sunshine, I’ll get you next time.“
Rapunzel looks around admiring the view that she never had a chance to fully take in. She sees the beautiful plains, the lush green grass decorated by vibrant flowers, the forest on the horizon that would create a beautiful tapestry, and the mountains with snowy tops in the distance that add colour to an otherwise green landscape. If that is not enough, cool winds flowed through the air bringing life to the plains. It is so calm and yet so refreshing to be in.
“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” asks Rapunzel in admiration.
“It is.” replies Eugene.
However, from the corner of her eye, Rapunzel notices something. There is a figure wearing a black cloak in the distance. Curious as to what it is, she decides to approach it. She walks for what felt like an incredibly long amount of time but ultimately she does get close.
“Hello?” asks Rapunzel.
The figure does not respond, standing completely still. Rapunzel grows more intrigue as to who it is. However, a tug on her hair by Pascal tells him not to go. Too curious though, she goes closer as she wonders who or what it could be as nothing seemingly matches the figure’s appearance.
A bit nervous, Rapunzel politely asks, “Um greetings, who are you?”
The figure turns and faces Rapunzel. Rapunzel tries to find the face of the figure but its face is too covered by the cloak to recognize. She could not tell who she was and a creeping anxiety grew within her.
“Uh…hi?” says Rapunzel raising her left hand.
The figure raises its right hand almost in response to the greeting. Rapunzel’s anxiety waned as the stranger seemingly had no bad intentions. Suddenly, the figure clenches her right first causing the ground to rumble. Before Rapunzel could react, pillars of black rocks surrounds the two of them stunning her and Pascal.
“What the…what are you doing?” questions Rapunzel in panic, “Who are you?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” answers the figure tilting her head slightly to the side.
The figure grabs her hood and pulls it down revealing who it is. Rapunzel looks in fear as what stands before. It could not have been and yet there she stood. The blue hair, the jagged black armour, and those vengeful blue eyes. Pascal buries himself in Rapunzel’s hair recognizing the person.
“Your greatest failure…” mutters Cassandra.
Rapunzel tries to run but there is no breaking passing the Blackrocks surrounding them. She could not climb over them, go under them, or break them. She is trapped with Cassadnra.
“Stop fighting Princess and look at me.” orders Cassandra.
Rapunzel could not look at her. She could not gaze at what Cassandra had become.
“Look at me…” demands Cassandra once again.
Rapunzel refuses knowing what is in front of her.
Filled with rage, Cassandra yells one last time, “I said look at me!!!”
Unable to tolerate the fury in Cassandra’s voice, Rapunzel yields and turns and looks at Cassandra face to face. As Rapunzel gazes at her, she is in shock at what happened to her. Cassandra is bleeding with blood flowing from scars on her face and dripping from her mouth, her right arm is injured, almost appearing disconnected, and her eyes contained an inextinguishable hate that demanded blood.
“This is who I am…” states Cassandra breathing through the pain, “This is my destiny…”
Rapunzel tries to look away, unable to look at the horrible injured Cassandra. So bad are her wounds that she should not be alive but there she is. As if things could not get worse, Cassandra tosses a sword to her almost demanding for a fight,
“Pick it up.” request Cassandra.
Rapunzel could not move as she looks in horror unable to move an inch of her muscles. She could not fight Cassandra and she knew well what it would entail.
“Come on…” complains Cassandra, frustrated by Rapunzel’s cowardice, “pick it up!!!”
Rapunzel is frozen in fear. Despite the threatening and taunting voice of Cassandra, Rapunzel could not pick up the weapon.
“I can’t.“ responds Rapunzel.
“LIES!!” yells Cassandra.
Once again, Rapunzel could not. Even if she could muster the courage to fight the horrifying appearance of Cassandra, she will not win.
“So you won’t fight…” says Cassandra, disappointed, “then die by my hands.”
Immediately, begins to take a few steps toward the Princess.
“Wait no…” mutters Rapunzel.
Cassandra gets closer, determined to kill. Rapunzel tries to find a way out but her back was already to the walls. She tries to climb, she tries to find an exit, she tries to push but it is futile. As she looks around one last time, she sees Cassandra preparing to land a punch.
“NO!!!” yells Rapunzel as the sword falls on her.
Rapunzel suddenly wakes up in a cold sweat. She feels her body for any injury. Instead, she only feels the sharp pain of old injuries untended too. Still panicking, she looks around and sees her cell, Varian sleeping, Pascal in a deep slumber in the corner, and the throne room lit up by blue fire. She comprehends what she just saw and only one conclusion can be made.
“It’s a dream…” mutters Rapunzel, catching her breath, “it’s a dream.”
Rapunzel crawls to the bars of the cell trying to get a better view of the room. She is able to see glimpses of sunlight indicating it was dawn.
“It’s morning…” remarks Rapunzel.
“Couldn’t get much sleep?” asks a voice.
A bit stunned, Rapunzel turns and finds Cassandra standing in front of her. She too was up but unlike herself, the Princess could not tell why she is up so early. However, the Princess decides not to talk to her. Cassandra notices the lack of response but frankly could not care less.
As the two stood looking at each other, Cassandra felt her foot burning from standing for so long. She decides to walk to the cell and lean on it in an attempt to rest her foot.
Suddenly, Rapunzel asks, “How did you survive it?”
“Survive what?” responds Cassandra.
“My dad for those three months?” asks Rapunzel, “How did you survive it?”
“I had to thank your mother and my dad for it.” replies Cassandra, “They got me through the worst of it. Otherwise, I just learned quickly and adapted in time.”
“Did you ever have dreams as a child?” asks Rapunzel.
“I never had time for it.” answers Cassandra, “Even if I did, they were short lived at best. The only thing I recall is wanting to be the Captain of the Guards, but being frank, that one is more or less the only option I had and one that I threw away for you.”
“And does that justify you siding with Zhan Tiri?” questions Rapunzel.
“Your point?” asks Cassandra
“You know exactly what Zhan Tiri is.” Rapunzel points out, “You know she is using you. Maybe not all of you but I know a part of you is thinking this.”
Cassandra is left silent by this question. A minute passes and Cassandra still has no response.
Suddenly, Zhan Tiri appears out of nowhere and sees Cassandra at the cell talking with Rapunzel.
“Ah, good morning Cassandra.” greets Zhan Tiri.
Interrupted in her thoughts by Zhan Tiri’s presence, she greets her. Rapunzel frowns realizing that her attempt to reach her has failed.
“Morning Zhan Tiri, are you ready to go?” replies Cassandra.
“Indeed I am, stay close though, the trek to the Spire isn’t easy.” states Zhan Tiri.
“Spire? What are you talking about?” asks Rapunzel, “Where are you going?”
“You just answered it.” states Cassandra.
“And to get what?” questions the Princess.
“A magical artifact.” answers Cassandra.
Saying all she needs, Cassandra and Zhan Tiri move to the center of the throne room. The ground beneath them begins to glow as Blackstone grows from the ground.
“See you later, princess.” says Cassandra fading from sight.
With Cassandra disappearing from sight, Rapunzel is left alone in the throne room. In a way, she still wondered how things went so wrong as it did. With nothing else to do, she decides to reflect. Outside, Cassandra began her trek to the Spire. However, she never really knew what she is getting herself into.
“So what are we trying to get?” asks Cassandra.
“Well, we are trying to get the Mind-Trap Stone.” answers Zhan Tiri.
Curious, Cassandra asks, “What is that?”
“It is an artifact that allows the wielder to control all who have sworn loyalty to the moonstone.” explains Zhan Tiri.
“People have sworn loyalty to the moonstone?” asks Cassandra.
Zhan Tiri replies, “Indeed, granted it was in the interest of protecting it from those who would use it to do harm.”
Listening to Zhan Tiri’s explanation, Cassandra started to recognize something.
“Wait…would that happen to include the Brotherhood?” questions Cassandra.
“Why yes.” answers Zhan Tiri with a small smile.
“That seems…” mentions Cassandra, understanding the power it entails, “rather weak.”
Zhan Tiri chuckles at Cassandra’s ignorance, “Oh don’t underestimate the Brotherhood. It used to be much stronger.”
“Excuse me?” questions Cassandra.
“There was a time when the Brotherhood wasn’t just three people.” explains Zhan Tiri.
“You mean it was larger?” asks Cassandra.
“The Brotherhood is, or should I say was the right hand army of the Dark Kingdom’s crown,” states Zhan Tiri, “Is it not bizarre for the Brotherhood to only be composed of three members?”
“Well, what happened to it?” asks Cassandra.
“That’s a long story in itself and we should get a move on.” explains Zhan Tiri, “The Spire is a long way from here.”
Before they could continue, the two hear the sound of movement in the woods around them. Cassandra immediately takes cover and hides behind a tree. Taking a peak, she tries to find the source of the sound not knowing what or who it is. As she examines the tree line, she catches the glimpse of yellow armour. She quickly counts four of them but there were four more unidentifiable bodies.
“Royal Guards…” remarks Cassandra, “out here?”
Based on the formation, she guesses it is a small scout party of Royal Guards on horseback. However, something else catches her attention. While Royal Guards are evident, amongst their ranks she also caught the glimpse of some non-uniformed people with a recognizable armband on their right arm.
“Civilians?” says Cassandra to herself.
The scouting party stops to survey their surroundings. None got off their horses but seemingly surveyed their surroundings to the best of their ability. Cassandra chose to hide from their sightline and listen closely. She knew well that if she gave away her position or alerted them, it could get ugly quickly.
“Any signs of her?” asks the commanding soldier.
“No sir,” responds a civilian.
“Very well, move to the next area.” replies Officer, “Once that’s done we can go home and finish your shift.”
“Shift…?” murmurs Cassandra, “What do they mean by shift?”
Cassandra wondered why the civilians were taking shifts in the guards. However, as she observed them, she noticed that some of them are particularly young. One of them was seemingly a young man probably 18 years old, no older than Rapunzel but his expression looked like one of her age.
“Attack them,” whispers Zhan Tiri.
“What?” replies Cassandra in shock.
“It’s a small band of soldiers.” Zhan Tiri points out, “If you attack them now, it’s eight less problems later.
Cassandra thought about it but hesitates, she knows it is not worth the trouble. Furthermore, the sight of that young boy caught her off guard. Why was Corona using civilians? Are they really that short of manpower? She did not know the answer but if what she is seeing is the norms in Corona, then the city is growing desperate. Eventually, the party moves on and Cassandra is able to finally move out of cover.
“You should have attacked them.” states Zhan Tiri bluntly.
“They’re harmless. No need to fight them.” argues Cassandra.
“Harmless?” questions Zhan Tiri, “They are loyal soldiers of the despotic monarchy, one more soldier defeated is one less they have.”
“And perhaps one more family that grows vengeful of me.” rebuttals Cassandra.
“They already fear you for what you have done to Rapunzel. All of Corona fears you because of what you have done.” explains Zhan Tiri, “Do you really think they would think otherwise just because you spare their sons and daughters? These mortals are not your ally, they are your enemy.”
Cassandra clenches her first as she looks with frustration at Zhan Tiri. It seems as if this entity has no moral line. Then again, she is reminded of what Zhan Tiri is. She wished she could just silence that sorcerer but she could not. She is the only ally she had and she needed her.
Spilt in her belief, Cassandra mutters to herself, “I need her…I need her…I need her…”
She repeats that phrase to herself over and over again that she needed Zhan Tiri. As she muttered it, she starts to wonder why. Why did she need her? Well it was because she is her only ally, but an ally in what? Her war against Corona of course, but why was she fighting it? Which is to avenge all those wronged by the crown including herself, but…did that cause justify siding with an ancient threat and all the pain she has caused?
Suddenly, Rapunzel’s question to her starting to comeback to her thought. Was the goal of revenge and justice enough to justify siding with the embodiment of evil? Granted, no one knew what she had gone through but is she that petty? Cassandra knew she is better than that and she knew well what Rapunzel and to an extent what Eugene had to go through. So why was she different than those two? As she kept thinking, she is brought back to the present by Zhan Tiri.
“Come now Cassandra, we have to pick up our pace now,” says Zhan Tiri.
Cassandra snaps back to the present and realizes she had in fact slowed down. She lost herself in her thoughts and sort of disconnected from reality. With Zhan Tiri bringing her back, she picked up her pace.
Back in the stronghold, Rapunzel is still thinking about where things went so wrong. She tries to think about which moment it all began. This is not her strong suit, but if there is one resource she has now, it’s time. As she is thinking, she heard the yawn of Varian waking up.
“Morning princess…how was your sleep?” asks Varian.
Rapunzel slowly turns to her revealing her eye bags to the boy.
“Right…” says Varian letting out a nervous chuckle, “So, did Cass leave us any breakfast?”
“Some bread rolls.” answers Rapunzel pointing to a basket.
Varian looks at the basket and sees several loaves of bread.
Picking one up, Varian replies, “So same thing as the last few days?”
“Yeah…” mutters Rapunzel lost in her thoughts.
“You know,” mentions Varian chewing on some bread, “one would wonder how she exactly got the food.”
“I suppose so…” answers the Princess, still distracted by something.
Varian looks at Rapunzel saying, “You don’t seem so–”
His stops talking as he sees her distracted by something else. Clearly whatever it is, it is souring her mood. With nothing else besides eating the same bread that he had been eating for the last few days, he decided to talk to her.
“What’s on your mind…” asks a concerned Varian.
“It’s nothing,” answers Rapunzel, “I was just wondering how we got here.”
“You mean like literally or…figuratively?” asks Varian.
“Everything, like when did Cassandra start turning,” answers Rapunzel, “when did she think it was a lost cause, and why… she tried to kill me.”
“Well, I hate to be that guy, but I may be able to offer answers,” says Varian.
Hearing this, Rapunzel quickly turns to Varian exclaiming, “You do?”
“To some stuff.” answers Varian, “Not all.”
“Well, what do you know?” asks Rapunzel.
“First of all, Cassandra already had some dislike of the monarchy since I was imprisoned,” states Varian, “One thing that most people don’t know was that on the night that I was imprisoned by the King. Cassandra secretly went to my cell to talk to me.”
“She did?” exclaims Rapunzel in surprise.
This information came as a shock to her and Pascal who had by known join in on the chat.
“Yeah, she went to comfort me after everything that went wrong.” explains Varian, “In that moment, she shared to me how her life wasn’t easy for the reason you now know and how her trust in the monarchy is not as optimistic as she claims.”
“Cass shared that?” questions the Princess not being able to comprehend the explanation.
“Yeah, she did, but she also mentioned how much you changed her perspective.” answers Varian, “She said you are the reason why she still believed in the monarchy. You were her first true friend and had faith you could fix things.”
“She trusted me that much?” asks Rapunzel in disbelief, not really understanding how much she meant to Cassandra.
“Yeah, granted I guess the journey to the Dark Kingdom changed things.” says Varian.
Rapunzel lets out an empty chuckle replying “You could say that.” On our journey, we had many close calls and in some ways, I kind of caused some of them.”
“You did?” asks Varian.
“Well in one case, we entered a house that Cass insisted we shouldn’t and as a result, we almost got possessed by evil versions of ourselves, saw some really weird stuff, and had to raise a baby Lance, Shorty, and Cassandra.” explains Rapunzel.
“Did…did you make that last part up?” questions Varian not believing it.
“Nope, it all happened.” answers Rapunzel with Pascal letting out a thumbs up in confirmation.
“Say, now that you mention it,” mutters Varian thinking to himself, “didn’t you say that Cassandra’s reasoning for taking the moonstone was because she saw a vision?”
“Yeah, I did.” replies Rapunzel.
“If that is the cause,” says Varian ,”It wouldn’t have happened to be in that house, would it?”
Rapunzel took a moment to recall her memories and suddenly she realized that Varian has a point. At that moment, she recalls the moment after Cassandra took the moonstone. She remembered the distrust of Cassandra at Rapunzel and the insistence she was protecting her.
While it was clear why Cassandra did what she did at the moment since she literally stated it, it only seemed to make sense Rapunzel now had time to reflect. After all the ups and downs that Rapunzel led the group through during their travel to the Dark Kingdom, of course Cassandra would have a distrust of her. Combined with her love of Rapunzel, Cassandra’s initial motivation made sense.
“However, what changed from then?” asks Rapunzel.
“Well…a lot of things.” answers Varian, “There were the protests, more protest, that one time when you said you went back in time, and–
“The ambush…that’s where things got worse,” interrupts Rapunzel.
“I was going to say the Treasure Of Herz Der Sonne but that works too.” says Varian.
Rapunzel took a moment to recall all the things Varian said. She remembered the protest, the demand for change, and the new constitution that did occur, but not without betrayal. Recalling the events of the ambush. She remembered the supposed agreement that was to be made between Cassandra and Frederick over the new reforms and how her dad used it to capture Cassandra and her allies.
She recalls the anger she had towards her father for how he broke her trust. However, she also remembered how quickly it faded away after learning of the actual reforms that were to happen. In some way, she should not have been so quick to forget and forgive her dad’s deed but she did. In doing so, she also ignored Cassandra’s problems.
“In hindsight, it was kind of remarkable that Cassandra was willingly to propose the truce when considering the betrayal.” mentions Varian, “I would have been angry if I was in her place.”
“I think anyone would have been, but Cass realized we have bigger problems.” points out Rapunzel.
“Zhan Tiri?” asks Varian.
“Yeah, and rather than taking things seriously, I just took her truce for granted and thought things would be fine,” says Rapunzel.
“But that wouldn’t explain her sudden change in actions on Eugene’s birthday.” states Varian, “I didn’t get to see her much but she was two different people before and after the proposed truce.”
Once again, the room fell silent as the two and Pascal wondered what changed. They had already done a good job piecing things so far but they had come to a roadblock. Suddenly, Rapunzel realized why, but thinking about it only made her more ashamed at how hard she messed things up, at least in her perspective.
“Because I let her fall.” mentions Rapunzel.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” exclaims Varian, trying to wrap his around the Princess’ conclusion, “How did you get to that conclusion?”
“Think Varian,” says Rapunzel, “Cassandra knew the real danger was Zhan Tiri. If Cassandra's allegiance was weakening, then Zhan Tiri would need something drastic to change her opinion and she did.”
Varian took a moment to comprehend Rapunzel’s point. Eventually, he even started to understand Rapunzel’s point.
“I see and,” mutters Varian, “Oh, oh…that’s how you came to that conclusion.
“Cassandra was the closest person to figure out the truth and rather than helping her,” mutters a guilty Rapunzel, “I left Cass to the mercy of Zhan Tiri’s manipulation.”
“Rapunzel, are you being a bit too hard on yourself?” asks Varian.
“Too hard on myself?” exclaims Rapunzel, seemingly offended by how Varian tried to change the narrative, “It was so obvious that Cass was facing her problems and I ignored it. I ignored her when she needed it the most. I caused this Varian, I’m just as guilty as Cassandra is here…”
The Princess falls into despair. Varian tries to talk to Rapunzel but he knows that right now is not a good time. Not wanting to push things further, he decided to do something else and give Rapunzel space.
“Well,” says Varian to himself, “back to the bread rolls.”
The day passes and eventually night comes. At a mountain far away, there lies a building on a narrow road that leads to the peak which contains a greater structure called the Spire. The keeper of the spire, Calliope is busy researching the artifacts she had with her pet, a Baby Kurlock. Calliope is a rather short lady with glasses. She is dedicated to her role as the keeper of the spire and protector of its artifact. However, such isolation has also meant she has terrible social skills and is insufferable to talk to.
Even Rapunzel herself lost her temper with the keeper. Nonetheless, as she is writing her usual notes, she hears a knock on the door. Wondering who it is as it is late in the night, she walks to the door. Opening it, she finds her mentor in front of her. A tall, slender, and old man with a long white beard, the Keeper (or at least he was).
“Good evening sir,” greets Calliope, “what brings you here this late?
“Oh nothing much,” answers the Keeper, “I was returning home when I thought about seeing the updates on your research.”
“Ah my research, I see.” says Calliope delightfully.
“Now, then, Calliope, show me what you have learned.” request the Keeper.
Clearing her throat, Calliope moves to an artifact and prepares herself to explain what she has learned.
“Well, here we have the masks of Alastros.” states Calliope presenting two masks separated by a glass case.
Afterward, she quickly walks to a sarcophagus continuing in her explanation.
“This, of course, is a Snafarian sarcophagus,” announces Calliope, “and here–”
As she walks to her third, she stops in confusion looking at an empty stand.
Letting out a gasp, she says, “hmm. That’s strange. The Shapeshifting Cloak of Retudnus is missing.”
“Never mind that, child.” interrupts the Keeper, “Tell me, where is the Mind Trap?”
“You mean, the talisman that can control the minds of any who’ve sworn loyalty to the Moonstone? Or like, the Brotherhood?” asks Calliope, distracted by this new topic.
As the two converse, Calliope’s Kurlock starts to sense something is wrong. It sensed something is off with the Keeper but Calliope is none the wiser.
“Yes,” continues the Keeper, “Now, where is it?”
Oddly the keeper gets closer but Calliope does not notice anything yet.
“Why, locked away in an enchanted box that can only be opened with a key that I possess.” states Calliope proudly.
“I see…” remarks the Keeper.
Suddenly, the Keeper raises his hand and traps Calliope and Kurlock in Blackstone. Unable to move, Calliope can only wonder in confusion what the hell is going on.
“Wait, how…” asks Calliope.
Looking at the keeper, his expression grows sinister. Only now did Calliope realize something is wrong, but what is going on. Suddenly, the keeper grabs his face and pulls it, much to Calliope’s initial horror. However, appearance quickly fades away and is quickly replaced with a blue hair girl in black armour holding a cloak.
“Now,” says Cassandra, putting the cloak in her satchel, “Where is the key?”
“Oh, so that’s where the cloak went.” remarks Calliope not aware of the impending danger.
(see what I mean?)
“The key?” demands Cassandra.
Calliope laughs nervously knowing that she had the key. She thought about doing something but it was impossible. She had fallen into a clean trap placed by Cassandra and frankly she fell into it due to utter lack of awareness.
“Uh…let me think.” says Calliope trying to buy sometime for a plan.
Suddenly, Blackrocks grow from the ground getting painfully close to her face. So close were the sharp rocks that an inch in any direction would have meant touching the pointed ends.
“If you are trying to delay things, go ahead, I will happily kill you and search for it myself.” states Cassandra, “And unlike everyone, you will not be missed.”
I mean, she’s not wrong. No one likes her…oh wait I forgot I am supposed to be narrating. Anyway…Calliope’s anxiety grew tenfold. Hearing a death threat is not on her bingo card, not that she knew what bingo is but you get the point.
“You wouldn’t.” mutters Calliope in disbelief.
“Oh trust me sweetheart,” states Cassandra, “I already have.”
Calliope kept thinking about her options trying to come up with something all the while Cassandra stared at her with the clear intent to kill.
“Come on…” says Cassandra tapping the rocks, “The clock’s ticking.”
Suddenly, Calliope thought of something but for one time in her life, she kept her sudden realization suppressed. It is not hard as a literal killer is in front of her but her sudden idea seemed to work or at least it was to her. Looking at Cassandra, she takes a deep breath and makes her choice.
“Fine…” sighs Calliope pretending to admit defeat, “I will show you.”
Cassandra lowers the rocks allowing Calliope to move. Looking at her Kurlock, she sees her still pinned.
“You won’t free her?” asks Calliope.
“You are not really in a position to negotiate are you?” questions Cassandra, raising an eyebrow.
Calliope lets out a groan, eventually saying, “Fine…”
Leading Cassandra to the room containing the key, Calliope plans out what she is going to do. She recalls having a plan for the exact situation, but the risks are high and there is no guarantee it would work.
“One wrong move and this place goes down with you.” threatens Cassandra.
Calliope shows a nod of understanding but either way, she is going to make her move no matter the threat. As they arrive in her room, she reaches for the box containing the Talisman and grabs the right key and prepares to open it.
“Alright then, open it.” demands Cassandra.
Calliope stops for a second, reluctant to open the box and give Cassandra what she wants. However, a sword to her neck changed her opinion.
“Open…the box.” orders Cassandra moving the blade ever closer.
Breathing nervously, she inserts the key into the box and unlocks it, revealing a blue object with the symbol of the Brotherhood in the center.
Smiling knowing she has what she came for, Cassandra orders, “Now give it…”
Calliope picks up the Talisman and is about to hand it to Cassandra. Suddenly, she dives through Cassandra's legs and runs away into the hall as quick as her feet can carry her.
“You fool!!” yells Cassandra in rage.
Cassandra summons rocks to pin her but Calliope dodges it and keeps running. Immediately, the traitor gives chase to the short woman. Calliope pants in fear as she runs to another room and finds a cage with a messenger pigeon. Quickly, she finds a piece of paper that she somehow knew to use in a moment like this and puts it on its leg. As she turns to the exit of the room, she saw Cassandra walking in front of it blocking her escape with her sword sliding on the floor.
“Give it Calliope or else…” threatens Cassandra.
Calliope is trapped and looks around her for an escape. She sees a window but realizes getting out through it is meaningless. However, she quickly remembers that she did not need to escape, only the pigeon. Running to the window, she bashes it open and threw the pigeon out as it flew away. As she saw the pigeon fly away into the dark of night, she could only hope that her plan worked. Suddenly, she felt a strong grip on her back as she is lifted in the air.
“That was a mistake. Now either you hand me the key or I will take it from you.” states Cassandra.
Catching her breath and trying to breath amidst the tense situation. Calliope managed to get something out.
“That pigeon wasn't for me,” says Calliope.
Confused, Cassandra wondered what she meant. As the pigeon flies away, it heads for a certain direction almost as if it is trained to do so. Eventually, it lands near an encampment below the Spire. Not big enough to be spotted by Cassandra, but large enough to garrison a whole company of 75 men.
As the pigeon flies down, it lands on the arms of a Corona Guard. Pulling out the message on the bird, he reads the message and realizes what is going on. Immediately, he runs to the headquarters of the encampment. Rushing past other soldiers, he breaches into the tent without warning. Taking a moment to breathe, the soldier comes face to face with the leading Officer and his subordinates looking at a map.
“What is the meaning of this?” asks the Officer.
“I got a message from the keeper of the spire.” explains the guard, still panting, “The traitor is here.”
Upon hearing the word traitor, the Officer immediately gives out orders, “Sound the bells and have all troops prepare to move out immediately. We must prevent her from taking anything from the spire, MOVE!!"
Acting quickly, the alarm bells are rung and horns are sounded. In an instant, every soldier gets up and prepares to move out.
“Alright gentlemen!! We depart in two!!” yells the Officer, “You have been briefed over the situation and have trained for this, so get ready for the fight of your life!!”
The Officer knew well what he is about to face. He is well aware that considering the resources at his disposal and the threat he is facing, the odds of success are low. But he is going to make one hell of an attempt no matter what. Afterall, he knew of the urgency of his task.
(Flashback to a week ago in Corona)
The Officer is walking down the hall heading to the war room. He is a rather experienced veteran of the Corona guard. He has been serving in the guards even before the return of Rapunzel. As a result, he has seen his fair share of service. He vividly recalls seeing action when Varian unleashes his rampage on Corona. Of course, he, like many of the guards were injured when he attacked so he is not present during the rescue mission. Since then though, he has been seeing more action in this new war Corona has found itself in.
Today, he is supposed to be manning the defense when he receives orders to meet the Captain in the castle. He is to be assigned for a mission. Frankly, he is confused why he of all people is being ordered for this. Everyone of his colleagues are out there serving on patrols in the forest or manning the defense. That or they are recovering. So what could be important that he is being pulled out? Reaching the war room, he knows that his questions are about to be answered soon. Knocking on the door, he awaits a response.
“Enter,” says a voice from within.
Pushing the door open, the Officer is surprised to find not just the Captain, but also Eugene, Lance, and Adira of the Brotherhood.
Coming to attention, he says, “Permission to enter?”
“Permission granted,” replies the Captain.
With permission, the Officer enters and closes the door behind him.
“Afternoon Captain, I have arrived per your order.” says the Officer.
Taking a quick glance at the Officer, the Captain replies, “Good, you’re here because I have an important assignment for you.”
“Assignment?” asks the Officer.
“Yes,” replies the Captain, “You’re being sent too…um, what’s the location?”
“The Spire.” answers Eugene quickly.
“Ah, yes that thing.” says the Captain, pointing to a place on a map, “You are going to lead a task force to go there.”
The officer is a bit taken aback by this order. All of his friends are in combat and he is to be sent on vacation? He has no idea where this place is but it sure does not sound like fighting the arch traitor at their gates. Frankly, for a veteran soldier like him, such an assignment felt insulting.
Wanting to protest, the Officer says, “Sir, may I ask why? This place sounds, for the lack of a better term… useless. Is the fight not here against Ca–… correction, the arch traitor?”
The Captain is about to respond but is interrupted by Adira.
“Please, allow me Captain,” says Adira, “You see Officer, this Spire is no mere “vacation”. It is a vault of antique relics, some of which can be a threat to Corona.”
“I see,” says the Officer, “Still surely any other person can get this assignment. Why does it have to be me?”
“Because this Spire holds a particular artifact that jeopardize the defense of Corona.” states Adira, grabbing a scroll.
Walking to the Officer, she unrolls it revealing an artifact alongside some ancient language he does not know.
“This right here, is the Mind Trap stone.” says Adira, pointing to an object on it, “This artifact allows the wielder to gain complete control over anyone that has sworn loyalty to the Moonstone, such as me.”
Suddenly, the Officer’s expression becomes one of comprehension. Almost immediately, the gravity of the task became clear.
“Mind control,” mutters the Officer, “You’re saying that whoever wields this can mind control you and your allies?”
“And now you understand the important assignment do you?” asks Adira.
“Yes,” answers the Officer, “In that case, I will gladly take this assignment.”
Eugene and the Captain smile knowing that their chosen candidate is enthusiastic for this assignment.
“Very good,” says the Captain, “In any case, you will be assigned to command the 33rd Corona company.”
“The 33rd?” asks the Officer, “Sir, forgive me but, aren’t they green? Surely for such a pivotal mission I have a better company.”
“True,” says the Captain, “but it’s the only available company. All other forces are either occupied with service in other areas or are recovering. The 33rd is the last we have.”
“That or we give you conscripts and civilians," Eugene adds on.
“I see,” says the Officer, “In any case, you can consider the Spire defended, Captain.”
“I hope it is,” says Eugene, “For all our sake.”
(Flashback to present in the Spire)
The Officer looks at the Spire in the distance. Despite the darkness, he knows well what lies ahead inside it. Suddenly, a soldier comes up to him holding a torch.
“Sir, all squads are ready to move out.” announces a guard.
“Good,” replies the Officer, finishing the last of his drink, “Let’s get to work.”
Meanwhile, in the Spire, Cassandra looks into the forest and begins seeing torches approaching the tower. She has already heard the horns blaring and with the encroaching torches, she realizes what Calliope has done.
“A homing pigeon…” says Cassandra.
“So Coronan Guards have been assigned to protect this place.” thinks Cassandra to herself.
Seeing the unexpected surprise on Cassandra’s face, Calliope says, “Yup and I bet you even you can’t fight that many.”
Confident that her plan worked, she becomes surprised when she hears a growing chuckle from Cassandra. As she looks at her, she finds Cassandra laughing sinisterly as a small smile grows on her face.
“Oh Calliope, you really are a fool.” states Cassandra.
Cassandra plants her sword on the ground and quickly grabs the Talisman that Calliope had. Placing it in her satchel she had, she knocks Calliope out with a decisive strike to her neck. With her unconscious, she drops her to the ground and looks outside to examine the attacking force.
As she examines the attacking force, she hears the commands of officers, marching of troops, and yells of soldiers. She counts the number of torches and counts over hundred, maybe a hundred fifty. It seemed like a lot but Cassandra is well aware that appearance can be deceiving.
As she looks closely, she noticed that some of the torches were placed in a way that looked like a soldier is holding two. Clearly, the amount of people down there are not as numerous as expected. Nonetheless, what is down their at best was perhaps a force of 75 guards which was something to not underestimate. She had a plan to escape and is about to when something interrupted her thoughts.
“Fight them,” advises Zhan Tiri who appeared out of nowhere.
“What?“ questions Cassandra in shock.
“You should fight them. Such a sizable force was sent to protect this spire.” explains Zhan Tiri, “ Imagine the morale of Corona when they realized that they failed and you won decisively once again.”
Cassandra took a moment to think but she is not convinced of needless fighting. A growing part of her subconscious demanded for violence. It is the same urge that led to her almost killing Rapunzel. Fortunately, Cassandra suppresses it, not allowing herself to be overcome by the Moonstone’s madness. However, Zhan Tiri is still insistent on fighting nonetheless.
“Do it. Remember what they did to you.” states Zhan Tiri.
Suddenly, the moonstone at Cassandra’s chest crackled with energy as she is reminded of the horrid experience inflicted on her. Clenching her fist, anger overcomes as she is reminded of why she is fighting in the first place.
“Fine…” announces Casssandra.
Turning from the window, she picks up her sword and moves out to fight. Outside, a force of 75 Coronan guards has assembled and now prepares themselves. Setting themselves up around the narrow roadway, they have basically eliminated all exit routes. However, the traitor is yet to be found.
“Any sign of Cassandra?” asks the Officer to a soldier.
“No sir, we suspect she is in the spire.” says a soldier pointing to the building.
Taking a moment to think, the Officer makes his decision.
“Alright, squad 1 move into the spire and find the Keeper.” orders the Officer, “Squad 2 and Squad 3 form a perimeter around the spire. No one gets in or gets out, is that clear?”
A loud hurrah is made in response to the Officer’s command as soldiers move to their position. A large squad of 25 guards advances into the spire via the main entrance. Meanwhile the rest take up position around the spire. The Officer and his men had been here for a long time. They had received direct orders from the Captain and hence the King to protect this place.
Using the messenger pigeon, it acted as an advance form of communication with Calliope should she be attacked.
He has been informed by the King himself that Cassandra must not steal anything from the spire as doing so could mean certain defeat. He however, has heard of the rumors regarding what Cassandra has accomplished and he knows that he only has a fraction of what is deployed to repel Cassandra in terms of both quality and quantity. The 33rd was a newly mustered company with many young and inexperienced troops. However, he is determined to follow his orders and perform his objective to the utmost of his abilities for his family and all those in Corona.
As the Officers and his troops wait outside, there is a strange silence in the air. No sound could be heard from the spire, not one bit. Not even the clattering of boots could be heard from within. Wondering what is going on, the Officer is thinking of sending another small squad in when suddenly a loud crash could be heard. This was quickly followed by the yelling of soldiers, hasty ordering of commanders, and the clashing of weapons. Everyone outside readied themselves with more troops assembling by the entrance. As fighting continues to unfold inside, outside troops wondered what the hell was going on. Suddenly, it grows silent.
“Stand your ground!!” orders the Officer drawing his sword, “Crossbows prepare to fire!! If you see that woman, you take that shot.”
Everyone readies their weapons and still the silence persists. Suddenly, footsteps are heard from the entrance growing louder with each step. Everyone wondered if it was Cassandra but they could not have been sure until they saw it. Eventually, the appearance of the figure was seen and immediately everyone reacted.
“Open Fire!!” yells a random soldier.
Bolts are loose but rather than hitting, all the gunners missed. Fortunately, it is good that they missed as the figure is the commander of squad one. Some soldiers tried to run to help him but the Officer stops them knowing something is wrong.
As the commander exits the entrance, he stood almost lifeless in front of the door before ultimately collapsing to the ground. As close examination indicated he is still breathing, but something inside wiped out his entire squad. Tensions grew amongst the men wondering what is going on. Suddenly, another set of footsteps could be heard. Focusing on the entrance, everyone wondered if this was Cassandra. As it grew louder and the figure revealed itself, it became clear that it is her. From the entrance, Cassandra observes the crowd of soldiers armed and ready to attack. Crossbowmen rush to reload their weapons but otherwise everyone was armed.
“So…this is the welcoming committee.” remarks Cassadra, “How nice.”
She examines the crowd but something catches her attention. Many of the guards are young . Just like in the woods, some of the guards in the crowd were probably 18 years old or only a slight bit older. Only the commanding Officer looked proper for a man of his position. For something so valuable, she expected a more qualified response but no, the troops sent are mostly young fresh-faced soldiers. As she looks closer, she only discovered more. Many of the guards are not scared as she thought, but rather determined. Expressions of courage, duty, and even anger are on all their faces.
Suddenly, her will to fight waned. She may have been willing to fight soldiers but these are just boys. They were no different from Rapunzel and yet here they are far from home ready to fight to their death. Suddenly, she felt regret about the soldiers she had fought, she did not kill anyone but thoughts of hurting and injuring boys of their age caused guilt in her.
“This is the finest Corona can show?” questions Cassandra, “Boys?”
The crowd remains unresponsive, still pointing their weapons at her.
“Look, I don’t want to fight you.” says Cassandra putting away her sword, “Withdraw with your wounded and no one else has to get hurt.”
The men look at each other not expecting terms to be offered. However, the veteran Officer walks in front of the troops putting himself between Cassandra and his men.
“We will not.” announces the Officer, “We have direct orders from the King himself to defend this spire at all cost and we shall.”
“And why serve the King?” questions Cassandra, “What good has he done? Need I remind you of all of his actions?”
Soldiers in the crowd look at each other showing signs of doubt. However, it is the Officer that talked for his men.
“I am aware of the King’s incompetence.” states the Officer, “I should know better than anyone, I lived in Old Corona, a town damaged by his incompetence.”
Cassandra let out a stunned look. She did not expect a person like him to be from Old Corona. She starts to wonder what really has happened in Corona for something like this to happen.
“It’s true that the King let my home be destroyed,” states the Officer, showing some frustration, “ but you, you threaten our way of life. I don’t fight to protect the monarchy. I fight to protect those who live under it. I fight to protect my children, my wife, and the innocent back home and I assure you every single man here will not fall short of that standard.”
Cassandra examines the crowd and every single soldier looks in agreement with pride at the Officer’s speech. Still not wanting to cause a massacre, she tries one last time.
“Please, step aside boys.” begs Cassandra, “Don’t make me send you home to your family in stretchers.”
Some soldiers in the crowd showed a moment of hesitation. Even the Officer look in hesitation at what he was about to condemn his men too, but once again his face is overcome with an expression of iron determination. He raises his sword and orders the attack.
“Not one step back!!” yells the Officer, raising his sword, “Forward!!”
Leading the charge, the officer and every soldier charged at Cassandra yelling with courage and pride. Seeing the violence she is forced to resort to, she pulls out her sword and charges back. What unfolded could only be defined as a one sided massacre. Soldiers are sent flying everywhere as Cassandra summons Blackstones to throw, block, and encase the troops. Whatever soldier that got close tried to land a blow on Cassandra but are repelled back with her expert swordsmanship.
Seeing the battle go south, the veteran Officer himself charged in at Cassandra and dueled the daughter of the Captain of the guard. He intended to set an example for his men on what to aspire to. With this intent, he fought with speed and ferocity that even stunned Cassandra herself. Respecting the fair duel, the traitor dueled him purely on their swordsmanship alone. For five minutes both sides swung, clashed, and parried blow after blow. Eventually, the Officer becomes exhausted, unable to win a battle of attrition. Seeing this weakness, Cassandra presses on the offensive and eventually disarms and knocks the Officer out of the battle, encasing him in rocks to trap him.
However, his performance has been noted and the troop fought on. Men keep charging and in time their ranks thinned. For 10 minutes the carnage unfolded as men charged and fell on the ground defeated. Not a single man of the 33rd company stopped fighting until everyone is wounded or trapped by the arch traitor. By the time the battle ends, she stands over a field of bodies. She made sure to kill no one but that did not make a difference to her. She felt nothing over this victory. The anger that encouraged her to fight is gone and only uncertainty filled over here. She has just defeated boys who are fighting for survival.
Suddenly, Cassandra notices one last guard standing. As she stares at the young man, he hastily reloads his crossbow, panicking the entire time. The soldier’s hand shakes in fear as he makes all sorts of rookie mistakes. Cassandra looked in pity at just how it was possible this boy became a guard when he could not even load a crossbow. She knew the Captain would not tolerate such incompetence and yet here he is wearing that armour. She felt no jealousy at him just…pity. Eventually, the soldier reloads the crossbow and aims at her but before he could fire, it jams.
“No…” grunts the soldier in frustration, “work damn it!!”
Sadly, the crossbow does not fire and there he stands against Cassandra, alone, outmatched, and outpowered. Cassandra looks at him and finds fear in his eyes. Not wanting to hurt another scared boy, she throws her sword to the ground showing no intent to fight. She looks at the boy who appears confused. Suddenly, his expression of fear and confusion transform into anger as he readies his sword and charges. Yelling out loud, he raises his sword above his head attempting to land a strike on her. Forced to fight, Cassandra easily dodges the first strike and backhands him to the ground, knocking out his tooth.
Cassandra has decisively won this fight as the field is littered with the bodies of all those who tried but failed to fight her. Looking around her, she wanted to feel something but felt nothing. Her mind flashbacked to her fight with Rapunzel in the stronghold where just like now she won, but a feeling unlike then where a flicker of excitement was felt, there is nothing now. The field is silent as not even the groaning wounded soldiers is heard. Cassandra know she did not kill anyone, but it felt like it.
Emerging from the tower, Zhan Tiri walks to Cassandra saying, “You did well.”
Cassandra looks to find Zhan Tiri beside her standing over the field of bodies.
Examining the field, Zhan Tiri lets out a chuckle of disbelief, “These mortals really thought they could challenge you, the champion of the Moonstone. And now Corona has lost another army of their finest men. Soon you shall march to Corona and fulfill your vengeance.”
“All of this, just for a piece of rock.” mutters Cassandra, empty and unsure of how to act.
“It may look pointless, but with this Talisman. All of the Brotherhood shall kneel to you and the final line of defence for Corona will collapse.” states Zhan Tiri.
Cassandra looks in doubt wondering if this quest for vengeance is what she wanted, if it is right. Zhan Tiri did not seem to share her guilt which made sense. Frankly, she still wondered why she is standing beside a sorcerer who had no regard for such innocent life. She has just wiped out a whole company of boys and here she is standing over them like she should be proud of it.
Seeing nothing more to say, Zhan Tiri prepares to walk away saying, “Come now, let us go home with our prize.”
As Zhan Tiri walks away, Cassandra still stands still. She looks at all the faces of the guards. She remembered their looks of bravery, determination and anger at her. They did not view her as a being but a monster. In a way, she is working with a monster and why is she? Just for justice disguised as revenge? For hate disguised as anger? She did not know anymore but seeing no other option, she began the trek home.
Suddenly, she starts to cough violently. She tried to stop herself but she could not. She felt a slight bit of pain in her chest but it quickly subsides. Eventually, she stopped herself but is still wheezing. This is another one of her many coughing fits she had for a while. Not to mention, she is feeling a bit ill but concluded it as the sudden change in altitude. Nonetheless, she began her trek home.
A few days later in Corona, Lance, King Frederick , Eugene and the Captain are in the planning room awaiting a report from the recent attack at the spire. Words of the attack has reached them but it took a while for a rescue force to arrive and even longer for a full report to come back. Eventually, a knock is heard at the door and Eugene responds to it. At the door a guard with a solemn face hands a letter. Taking it, Eugene thanks the guard and closes the door.
“What does it say?” asks the Captain.
Eugene reads the report and hopes for the slightest of good news. Sadly his expression indicates to the room that there was nothing good.
Seeing it, King Frederick asks, “How bad is it?”
“Very bad,” replies Eugene, “the entire company is injured and Cassandra escapes with something. They won’t be able to recover any time soon.”
“What did she take?” asks the Captain, “did she take the Mind Trap Stone?”
“We don’t know,” answers Eugene, “No report is made about it. The main focus is on the casualties.”
Failing to protect the Spire and letting Cassandra get away with any artifact she might be seeking is already in itself a serious problem. However, they now are faced with an even more urgent problem, they had just lost the last of their regular forces. There is none left to use.
Prepared to announce his next steps, the Captain says, “I am calling off all other operations. From now on, we will send no other taskforce for any other assignment unless ordered by the King himself”
Eugene and Lance look in concern at such a decision.
“The Brotherhood won’t be happy about this.” argues Lance.
“I have no choice.” replies the Captain, “That detachment was one of the last of our available guards forces. At this point, we’re on reserves and conscripts.”
Eugene tries to argue back but the mentioning of reserves already describes how bad things are. Any more costly engagement and Corona will be out of troops.
“Very well.” admits Eugene in defeat.
A sense of defeatism fell on the room and by extension Corona. The streets have grown quieter, morale has sunk, and any semblance of victory in the foreseeable future is gone. Ever since Rapunzel was captured, things had been going downhill with only a few moments of hope. Eugene with his allies had tried to hold the line but hope is dying. Eugene kept reminding himself of Rapunzel’s optimism but even that is not working anymore.
Back at the stronghold, Rapunzel and Varian are in the cell doing nothing. Varian is bored while Rapunzel is still thinking and reflecting. Frankly, Varian had never seen Rapunzel think as much as she has right now. Suddenly, a bright glow could be seen as Blackstone rose from the ground. From it, Cassandra rose up with Zhan Tiri by her side.
“You’re back…” says Varian, surprised.
Walking to the throne, Cassandra looks unresponsive but Zhan Tiri is in a good mood.
“Indeed we are, boy,” answers Zhan Tiri.
Seeing the Talisman, Varian asks, “What is that?”
“And would we tell you?” questions Zhan Tiri.
“It’s a Talisman.” answers Cassandra, lacking the enthusiasm of the demon.
Zhan Tiri looks in secret anger at Cassandra as she contradicts her statement.
She tries to argue back and is distracted as Varian asks, “What does it do?”
“You’ll see soon enough,” says Cassandra, “Isn’t that right Rapunzel?”
Cassandra expects a response but the Princess is silent the entire time.
Frustrated by the silence once again, Cassandra goads Rapunzel saying, “What’s wrong Princess? Cat got your tongue?”
Still Rapunzel said nothing.
“Still giving me the silent treatment, huh?” says Cassandra, “You’re really just giving up just because you can’t save me?”
Once again Rapunzel says nothing. Frustrated at the lack of a response, Cassandra goes to her throne to finally use the Talisman. As she rests, she picks up the Talisman and concentrates on it. The Brotherhood marking glows and outside a bright blue shockwave is sent flying. Even miles away from the origin, anybody who had the marking of the Brotherhood succumbs to the control of the Talisman. However, Cassandra has yet to make a command so nothing happened seemed out of place…for now.
On the throne, Cassandra expected the moment to make her feel something. Once again, she feels nothing. Any sense of respect, fear, or triumph at what is accomplished is gone. Instead, she is left with blood in her hands and a throne room with only herself. Elsewhere in the stronghold, Zhan Tiri talks to herself in the corner.
“Oh Demanitus, you won’t believe how good my plans are going.” says Zhan Tiri pacing around, “You may have delayed my plans for many millennia but let me assure you, I have won. When the eclipse comes, I shall draw the powers of the Sundrop and the Moonstone to myself. I have perfectly set things up so that all the pieces shall fall into my hands when it comes. As for their host, it was admittedly a challenge to break their inseparable bond of friendship but everything eventually breaks. Ironically, Gothel’s daughter was the hardest to manipulate. However, even she fell and it was quite a show. In a way, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree if you shake it hard enough.”
Zhan Tiri laughs evilly as she believes there is no way her plans could go wrong. All she needed to do now was patiently wait until the eclipse comes. Unbeknownst to her, Cassandra is listening out of sight. She heard everything, Zhan Tiri’s plan, her true intentions, and how… she seemed so similar to her mother.
