Sober, but Still So Much Hangs Over

Chapter 3: Chapter 35: Caine’s (Last?) Night

Chapter Text

That night, as everyone sleeps and rests up for the adventure mission tomorrow, you sit in your room and wonder if this will be it.

The ringmaster’s final performance, in a way.

Kinger must be holding off, you think. Doing anything while the Circus is already so precariously teetering towards destruction would be foolish, and Kinger has revealed that he is not the fool he lead you to believe he was. You were the fool to ever think (mourn, hope) that your creator was gone with the rest.

You wonder what it will feel like. Everything already feels so distant, maybe you won’t even notice for a while. Maybe you’ll have enough time to draw again with Gangle, make a new little adventure. Maybe you’ll even be able to convince someone to go on it if you ask nicely enough. Probably not though.

Kinger knows what’s best for the humans. You try not to be upset by what you know his decision will be, what he will do to you.

You’re done fighting this. Not when you’ve started to realize how deep this rot goes in you, what you’ve done. They’ve told you you were terrible, but it’s only now that you’re at their mercy you realize what they meant, how right they are to hate you. You don’t want to be hated. You’d fix this if you could, but there are easier solutions. Kinger is just… finishing what he started. What you so rudely interrupted.

You hope Kinger will warn you. You hope it happens without you ever knowing before it’s too late. You hope you never have to be near him again. You hope he wraps you up in a blanket and lets you lean against him and pats your head and tells you to go to sleep (you don’t sleep but how you do long for rest).

You hope there’s enough of you left to hear them happy.

Notes:

A little study of Caine’s mental state at this point of the fic. I lot of people said he seemed suicidal and like, kind of, but a lot of it is just a grim kind of acceptance that he’s going to ‘die.’

Of course, he can’t die easily, so he’s pretty sure there’d be some of him left, just not sure how much. Ending kind of inspired by that quote ‘I hope dying I like being carried to another room when you fell asleep, and you can still hear the chatter down the hall’

Notes:

Like the summary says, this is just a collection of the Against the Kitchen Floor little fic drabbles I've posted on tumblr, slightly edited, maybe fleshed out a bit, but for the most part short and sweet and so far all focused on Caine's POV. There's only four or so, I'll just slowly post them here.
