Mitsuha contemplates a lot of things.
She wonders at the stars, at the comets, and how she almost died.
How she saved a village.
But she doesn't remember any of it.
The complete memory of that night has been wiped from her memory, and even though the doctors had said it was trauma that pushed it back—
She knows it wasn't.
There are holes in her soul.
Empty voids that are desperate to be filled.
They tear away at her being, and everything she's ever wanted or had starts to break away because of it.
Mitsuha gives away all her possessions before she leaves to go to college in Tokyo.
What use is there for superficial things when there is nothing in her heart to enjoy it?
The void swallows everything that makes her—her—and something empty starts to enter the voids.
(her hand finds its way to her phone, and something feels wrong about the shape and size.)
